Oh damn so many things to do. I have a 2002 Ford Expedition that has the same exact dash. I got a cheap 75 dollar android dash tablet from geek app and wired it in with the included wires that came with it. The only modification I had to do to my car was a lil bit of shaving to the plastic where the stock stereo was installed. End result was a completely flush tablet display that looks like it came stock with the car. Tablet has been installed for 3 years now and its still running really good. So good that I much prefer the features it has and display quality compared to the stock display on my 2017 Nissan Pathfinder. The tablet even came with a back up cam which has way better quality and night vision compared to most back up cams on more modern cars. But damn you sure got some skill and patience to complete a project like this one. Thumbs up for you man.
Looks pretty good... U can use Plumbers tape to secure the tablet... Its a steel strap with holes in it that comes in a roll and used all the time in car audio
Domenico Lamberti This is a troll who has followed me from as far back as I can remember who is basically holding me accountable for ruining their life by making a video about overclocking the One M7 because "it haz FOAR COARS AND DOESN'T LAG."
•Finn• There was no space to plug in a USB cable. The alternative was wireless charging or hacking into the back of the tablet and rerouting the USB port.
+•Finn• When I did my install I found wireless charging to be unreliable; I had to use a usb cable instead. If you're interested there's a build log here uk-mkivs.net/topic/361785-dash-mounting-google-nexus-7-2013/
Isaiah PEz you can see it did already. He used a pair of pliars to crimp. Cut to the next scene, they obviously fell apart, because wire taps... Which destroys the shielding of the wire, creates a weak point, and is used improperly.
Ha-ha, with years of car audio I can say making a video of this and making as universal as possible is next to impossible. Also after having some experience in this, every summer day you'll spend a half hour waiting for it to cool off enough. So for anyone interested in this, drop me a line. The best way I've determined to handle powering it is with a adjustable 3.7 volt regulator. Connect that to constant. Take the battery out cut off the battery and use the connector. This way you can use the USB port for things. See fit the most part you cannot USB otg and charge. (You can with the right hardware and with the right software). Also use a TEC on the back with some tempature regulation would be wise. Personally I've install an amp and a Bluetooth and connect whatever phone or tablet I want. I have a giant hole in my dash and I'm happy as can be!
Sadly, my N7 '13 doesn't like polarized sunglasses in landscape mode. Otherwise, it would be a fabulous car tablet. Oh, and the Phoenix sun. It would have to be a dock, not a semiperm install. Romantic concept tho. In the real world, consumer tablets are just not auto-grade.
3:35 is re pinning necessary? I believe if the harness you purchase is made for your car you don't need to re pin. Just join/mate the harness you purchased, to the harness for the amp. Then connect it to the harness under the dash.
Ok one question, Why did you go to the fuse box for a 12v switchable power when all stock radio wire harnesses have on at the plug? They have a 12v constant that keeps the memory live on the deck and is the main power for the deck, it's the large yellow wire, and a 12v switchable, usually the smaller red one, that turns off your radio on /off when you turn the key.
How to install a tablet on your car! (easier & simpler version) 1. buy a tablet/phone mount that fits to your device. 2. attach the mount into the dashboard 3. put your tablet into the mount 4. plug the aux cord into the tablet.(Optional)
My point exactly.... but the way shown in the video is for people that wanna fit in an old tablet of theirs permanently. Makes sense for some that have the capacity to do such a manual job (not me) lol
Some states like Oregon are amending their distracted driving laws however to make any portable non-permanently mounted device illegal to touch while operating the vehicle. Oregon has gone so far as to dictate jail time for repeat offenders, with the first offense topping out at a $1000 fine.
Androidauthority Indeed Car audio authority......not so much. hint your o.e.m. stereo you removed had an UNUSED switched fused 12v source right in front if your face!
Man I'm trying to figure out how to do this, its pretty rough now. The aftermarket headunits are either cheap and unreliable or crazy expensive, I have a spare tablet laying around and wanted to see if i could do it in todays age. But very informative video thanks man 🤙
Or get one of those sticky things for the windshield that hold your tablet, connect the tablet to the car charger and an audio jack to the stereo of your car,a lot less work involved.
oh man, this is way too complicated. I have a casette player in my car, so I used a car audio casette with a 3.5mm jack cable which i attached to the tablet (sound), i bought a usb charger to fit in the cigarette lighter (to keep it charged) and finally, a tablet holder. So: tablet holder + audio casette with 3.5mm cable + usb charger = around 15$
+Sjuksköterska why not spend $20 and buy a china made head unit, it usually had USB AUX and car reader which makes like a lot easier and sounds not too bad either, I got one installed by the previous car owner and its not bad at all
right, you can still use your tablet via USB or AUX, the only reason I recommended it is cause I have used that cassette with 3.5 jack thing and it sounds bad lol even with good speakers, quality sound the only reason I think one should upgrade, but if your happy then its all good
What OS would you install on it? Would be cool if there was a custom firmware for the PI for cars. If I was to do this I would make sure it could have access to -Dab/FM radio -Netflix and TV (Entertainment) -Cars information e.g. MPH and report damages and show the user. Engine codes and stats. for the old Nexus7 (2012) conect the pogopins for audio and power. A optinal componmand is a Universal steering wheel control interface. and OBD Bluetooth interface.
Zach Snyder Yes, yes it could. That's one of the main reasons I wanted this to only be semi-permanent. It didn't come out *exactly* how I wanted, but I will definitely work on it over time.

its UI is terrible... I've sat in a Tesla... Would've been nice if they had made it more car friendly and less like a computer on the dashboard with terrible Ui
Zachary Bassett first of all, month old comment. Secondly its not rocket science making a UI that is easy to use. They make cars I agree. But the Teslas currently on sale are considered Luxary electric vehicles (due to the high cost). The cost needs to be justified at least. just saying
Salis Salman don't both apple and samsung make a huge tablets now? like the ones in the Tesla? just buy that! no need to deal with a Tesla in that case.
You used the existing 12v power source for the amp, To get the best performance out of the amp it was required to have an independent power source, wich is what you did! You then added an additional fused power source for the tablet and blue tooth modual. i.e you inadvertently powered your set up the way it should have been. :)
good question: If tablet battery is dead (car was standing in a garage for a couple of days) how will you turn the tablet on? The powier button is hidden...
This is pretty cool. I wonder - can you use a OBD2 bluetooth or wifi adapter at the same time as the tunes? I would like to see data from the engine at the same time as playing tunes.
Yo, good job mate! This is genius. Unfortunately my car doesn't let me put a tablet, because there isn't enough space in the dashboard. Would be amazing to get Android Auto like :)

Should probably disconnect the negative battery terminal just to avoid any possibility of shorting any wires. It is a safe way to work on anything electrical in a car.
+Taylor Martin How would the tablet function during cold weather in your truck? For example, say the temperature drops to -15 over night, would the table still work in the morning right after turning your truck on?
I'm confused regarding the wiring harness.. is the harness a car to ISO conversion and then how do you get the wiring harness to connect to a 3.5mm aux lead for the Bluetooth adapter
wireless charging creates a bunch of heat, you should have just hard wired it, you could have also put a hidden usb port under the dash to install updates and what not so you don't have to take the tablet out as much
Android Authority In this video you were working on a grid mat. Where can I get that one - I have been searching for one and haven't come across any good ones. Thanks!
My stero has bluetooth. I feel like you could just find a phablet or tablet mount for the dash. It wouldn't look quite as good but good enough for sure
I'm a little confused on why you wouldn't use the switched 12v wire provided in your metra harness. Also they make a harness that will bypass your factory amp.
Ok. So I have everything you showed in the video. I even have the exact same truck. The Cheap 7" touch radio is going to be replaced with a Samsung Tab S7 12" screen. I have the following installed now. Head unit, 2-6x8, 2-5x8, Two 12" woofers, and a 1600w 4 channel amp. With this Alpine KTP-445U. How do I hook it up and keep my 12" speaker bass? I'm not sure how to proceed. Can you point me in the right direction? Thanks.
I really like the video but I have a question about the cars antenna. How do you get it connected or is it possible. I am looking to try and get FM radio without streaming. Any ideas.
I used an onn surf 7” similar set up. In my is300 been trying to set it up where the screen turns on when the power is turned on and screen off when there is no power going to it.
omg what have I been doing with my life thank u so much I can't believe I never thought of that thank u so much and did u ever find a better way to mount the phone/tablet
Fantastic tutorial, thank you, My motivation though is to retain the original Head unit while gaining the Bluetooth option so I can utilise my tablet/smartphone for music and GPS. This would be removable and mounted separately, either above or below my head unit. Would it be possible to maintain the dual inputs from both the HU and the blue tooth receiver into the Alpine KTP-455U amp by splicing them together? As the amp only appears to have one input either high or low signal.
Found a solution to the above problem, I am going to run the outputs from the Blue tooth module and head unit to a small 3PDT Toggle Switch wich I will mount behind the cassette door, (who uses cassettes). I'm also going to mount a USB female socket here as well to be used as power source for charging and OTG access. My next problem is determining how to Utilise the OTG function and charge at the same time. I may be over complicating things however when I'm finished I will have added Blue Tooth and an amp to my existing OEM Head unit and the addition of my Tablet while maintaining the stock look and CD stacker ability.
ok how did u get wifi into the vehical, did u use your cell phone hotspot? or did u purchase a hotspot device for ur truck... I have a 2004 f150 and my stereo just went out recently.
Is there any way to add a backup camera, AM and FM radio, navigation without WiFi, aux input and other features to make it work more like an actual console?
MightyCarMods did one with an 1st gen iPad and it's like having an piece of Tesla's head unit but too bad you can't play songs from your devices without some sort of an internet connection and a app.
instruction not clear my 60inch smart tv couldn't fit in the dash

Finally an awesome video on this channel! :D
They seem to really like Chinese phones around these parts.
theDefault Yes but that's what makes Android Authority more diverse than other tech channels.
I installed another tablet in another vehicle. Consider this your _part two_, folks!

I'd rather go with angle usb cable instead of wireless
I suspect the sticky pad will fail in summer so the wireless charger will fall off eventually.
Literally THE BEST REVIEW/DIY video EVER!!! SERIOUSLY!!!
This video should be titled: *How not to crimp, how to do things the hard way, and what tools/materials not to use, demonstrated.*
Plus polarized lenses black out the screen in landscape mode on both my 2012 and 2013 N7's
Isaiah PEz you can see it did already. He used a pair of pliars to crimp. Cut to the next scene, they obviously fell apart, because wire taps... Which destroys the shielding of the wire, creates a weak point, and is used improperly.
This is totally the hard way... Try using a multimeter to find switched power rather than trying different fuses
Ha-ha, with years of car audio I can say making a video of this and making as universal as possible is next to impossible.

there's an android there as well mate it could be a mate phone so he could see pic
What's wrong with iPhones
nothing, but the channel is called "Android Authority"
He had needed another phone for the wiring charts and probably had an iPhone from a comparison close by. Whats wrong with that?

Stay proggy my friend.
So Taylor this is where you went after you left Pocket Now.

after two minutes i just wanted to see the final results and move on with my life
4 years later, were you able to??
🤣

Honestly only clicked on this video because of BTBAM in the thumbnail pic. Good stuff! Great video too!
I did everything like the video said, but I accidentally split the atom. :)

That's how Earnest Rutherford did it.
was waiting for part 2 on your channel i guess the wait is over lol
I'm thinking about putting a raspberry pi in my car
Nabre Labre I've had apple pie and pumpkin pie in mine, but never raspberry.
Nabre Labre do it
I wonder how hard it would be to hook it up to my newish head unit...
I just installed one in my truck yesterday. It works great.
What OS would you install on it? Would be cool if there was a custom firmware for the PI for cars.
If I was to do this I would make sure it could have access to
-Dab/FM radio
-Netflix and TV (Entertainment)
-Cars information e.g. MPH and report damages and show the user. Engine codes and stats. Tire Pressure.
-Bluetooth for phones to connect to.
-Maps and GPS.
-USB for mp3s or charger.
-An internet connection.
-Access to dashcam and reverse cam.
-Allow HDMI input to plug in a Chromecast or other devices.
-Remote start with voice or with a phone.
-Weather Information.
-Wi-Fi Hotspot for other users of the car
Would take time to add all this tho.
Have you looked at cellphone integration? Like a bluetooth hands-free calling setup?
Great video, very well explained.
Taylor, you did a fantastic job. But where is your CD player. Did you sacrifice your CD player?? I would be lost without it.
Gio048 Thanks! And I haven't used CDs since … 2006 or 2007?
2:35 And don't forget the COFFEE!
for the old Nexus7 (2012) conect the pogopins for audio and power. A optinal componmand is a Universal steering wheel control interface. and OBD Bluetooth interface.
This is all fine until the tablets battery explodes because of the heat inside a cars dash in summer
I very seriously doubt that would happen
Not going to happen.
hey as long as u don't buy those cheap Chinese one u be fine
so true
What about the expensive Chinese ones though
You can get a redirad or fm modulator. Easy install and mount the tablet anywhere.
Could heat in the car in hot summer days damage the tablet over time?
Zach Snyder Yes, yes it could. That's one of the main reasons I wanted this to only be semi-permanent. It didn't come out *exactly* how I wanted, but I will definitely work on it over time.
Zach Snyder Or remove the battery from tablet and power the tablet only through vehicle battery
+jestin jose I love the idea of just removing the battery
@@jestinjose7145 I also thought of this. But how do you get it to turn on while in the dash.
This is the kind of video that I expect to watch from A.A team. #nicejob
If you want someone who actually knows about cars to tell you how to do this go to the mighty car mods tutorial
you are absolutely right they are so good in this kind of stuffs
A couple of hours is a bit ambitious, but that was really well detailed procedure :)
This video should have been in HowToBasic......

2. glue the case to a vertical part of your dashboard.
3. put your tablet in.
4. realize how much if a genius I am.
I know it's more primitive and less seemless but it's functional and much simpler than this.

How would I go about doing this if you have a subwoofer and amp. What if I need to adjust the bass or something along those lines? Great video btw
You clearly have little experience doing this kind of work, your radio already receives a fused switched live.
sim6699 Admittedly, I don't.
Taylor Martin using a voltmeter or even a 12v light bulb, one could easily find the switched live wire from the ignition
You used the existing 12v power source for the amp, To get the best performance out of the amp it was required to have an independent power source, wich is what you did! You then added an additional fused power source for the tablet and blue tooth modual. i.e you inadvertently powered your set up the way it should have been. :)
You have the chi flow of a Kung Fu genius. Great job.
good question: If tablet battery is dead (car was standing in a garage for a couple of days) how will you turn the tablet on? The powier button is hidden...
You are so neat!!! all the cable management is great! Everyone I've watched are so messy!
All I need is a phone and an aux cord and my eyes on the road.
Nice vid. How do u operate the volume tho? Seperate steering wheel controls or another way. The hardware buttons are now hidden in the dash
Did I spot an iPhone there? THE CARDINAL SIN ON THIS CHANNEL!
Quiet you can whisper and the noise level will not interfered in you sleeping or conversation.
I found the easiest way to do that!!!
Step 1.
Buy car with android auto.
And that it, now you are ready to rock!!!
Emri Ben Gigi Well, that's one way to do it. lol
Taylor Martin I just kidding lol
OK
What's the thing u said in the beginning about android auto tech or something? Can u send a link?
I see an iPhone beside his nexus 6!;)
Taylor! Haven't seen you in a while since your last pocketnow video. Looking good mate!
Soundman aaaaaall the way.....
This is pretty cool. I wonder - can you use a OBD2 bluetooth or wifi adapter at the same time as the tunes? I would like to see data from the engine at the same time as playing tunes.
Why would the engine run any different just because you wired a tablet up?
I shall install my 50 inch 4K TV Screen in my 2006 Honda ACCORD EX 🖒 dashboard

Silly question does wireless charging keep the tablet topped up on long journey's using GPS?
Looks easy, what if for some reason u have to press power ON button ?
Should probably disconnect the negative battery terminal just to avoid any possibility of shorting any wires. It is a safe way to work on anything electrical in a car.
Question... With the bluetooth adapter, can you use your phone with the tablet and receive calls through it/the speakers?
+Taylor Martin How would the tablet function during cold weather in your truck? For example, say the temperature drops to -15 over night, would the table still work in the morning right after turning your truck on?
What camera/lense do you use when filming? It's beautiful, so clear!
I'm confused regarding the wiring harness.. is the harness a car to ISO conversion and then how do you get the wiring harness to connect to a 3.5mm aux lead for the Bluetooth adapter
I'm curious, where did you find the application on your N7? I cannot find it and I'm going to do a project similar to this next year
wireless charging creates a bunch of heat, you should have just hard wired it, you could have also put a hidden usb port under the dash to install updates and what not so you don't have to take the tablet out as much
Cool setup.... you could use metal straps like those found in an erector set to secure it tighter.
Kelly Kretchek Yeah, I would be pretty simple to take some mending plates (as they're called) and bend them to the shape of the tablet.
Taylor Martin Could you please post a link or the name of the bluetooth adapter that you used?
Kelly Kretchek I got this one bit.ly/1EbbUcm on a deep discount at Best Buy.
Glad to see Taylor here.
Great to see you Taylor, Looks like you lost some weight.
Android Authority In this video you were working on a grid mat. Where can I get that one - I have been searching for one and haven't come across any good ones. Thanks!
TheCritic609 Walmart has them, as do most craft stores like Joanns, Michaels, and AC Moore. Search for "self-healing cutting mat"
Taylor Martin Thanks!
Thanks.
quick question if I already had an after market radio installed could I use the harness they put in.
I really like the video but I have a question about the cars antenna. How do you get it connected or is it possible. I am looking to try and get FM radio without streaming. Any ideas.
If you do electrical connections please use some quality butt connectors and adhesive heat shrink! Better to do it right once!
wow dude that's insane work you did there!!
I envy guys who can do DIY projects like this.....well done!
I used an onn surf 7” similar set up. In my is300 been trying to set it up where the screen turns on when the power is turned on and screen off when there is no power going to it.
So when will you use the Bluetooth? Is it for the tablet or phone? Is it possible to switch source? Where to control it?
The ad is still playing but I know this is the video I've been waiting for
omg what have I been doing with my life thank u so much I can't believe I never thought of that thank u so much and did u ever find a better way to mount the phone/tablet
happy road trip bro,thanks again
MightyCarMods did one with an 1st gen iPad and it's like having an piece of Tesla's head unit but too bad you can't play songs from your devices without some sort of an internet connection and a app.
nice short and to the point tutorial, good stuff
