just bought a 2014 silverado that dosent support android auto so this was my plan to make it work on the pi, and you summed it up perfectly when i was asked why go this route instead of swapping the head unit... because i can
thanks for the shoutout buddy! awesome video!!
Hey there
Awesome project! This far from point pointless when having a smartphone or tablet.
This is the perfect starting point for building your own android auto compatible double din radio unit, instead of buying one.
And when you have a pi in there anyway, this opens the door for lots of other interesting car-projects !
Looking at this since Driving Mode removed apps and Auto for phones is dead. Glad someone had a video on it.
Definitely going in my car. Was just thinking about doing something like this. Thank you for making my job easier
This is less pointless than you expect. I've an old motorbike, and this is a perfect permanent solution for satnav and music. Love it.
My motorcycle solution from years ago was a waterproof phone mount connected to the handlebars and a helmet with bluetooth speakers with a mic built in (you can buy a kit to upgrade a regular helmet with bluetooth, but mine came preinstalled).
Everyone should love the raspberry pi, who wouldn't
I appreciate the effort you put into explaining each step and pointing out how things connect. Thanks!
So what ever happened to the followup video with this in your car?
Just bought the parts to try this out today and it works surprisingly well. Only a few issues that will probably be fixed soon. First off, if you wish to implement this in a car stereo system, (replacing the entire head unit for this setup) there is absolutely no way of changing the volume level , unless I am missing something. Maybe an external knob to trigger a change in the volume level. Second of all, I've found that Pulsar, a music player, is the only app that you can use on Android Auto that will actually let you play music stored locally on your phone. Also, maybe it might be better to step up the screen resolution to a 1024x600 screen resolution. This might be just a personal opinion, but I think the extra pixels will make the interface look better. ( I'm currently using the official Raspberry 7 inch Touch screen). Although the official touchscreen would probably look more aesthetically pleasing with the black bars surrounding the borders compared to other screens without them if implementing into a 2 slot DIN for car stereos (leave some holes in the side edges). But I can't wait for bluetooth to be fixed and I will await further updates. That's all I've experienced so far. Thanks so much for making a video about this. Have been thinking about doing something like this for my car ever since Android Auto came out.
Also, as a heads up for you and others reading, there was a new release today and the guy is going on a week break now, but he says the Bluetooth is in a basic working state (still a few bugs I think), and he's also figured out the stutter in the audio playing and some people says the map works better now too. I just bought a new 3b+ to combine with this so I can't wait to see the results

I wish you would revisit this with a can install/what is needed. Also it would be cool to show how to take over an existing car stereo with the Pi to turn it into a touch screen head unit. Hell I would love to see using a android tablet as your car head unit also!
This has literally been a dream of mine since Android Auto was announced. Can't wait for this to be more flushed out.
Wait u till its useful
@@toordog1753 this is what it feels like to get necroreplied yourself
Mount this setup in a 2-din case with a good amplifier and suddenly you own a top notch car stereo system to replace any old stereo in most cars.
Lucas Milani any ideas on a headunit software that would be awesome to run..
Looking at the dynavin v7 Rio.. but seems a little pricey.. but benefits are it's plug n play compatible.
Gary Stinten Time to build our own systems!
Some vehicles have an amplifier already
This is what I wanted too.
@@RandomNJ every vehicle has an amplifier , just get out your soldering iron , car stereo schematics, solder a aux cord into factory stereo, with a/b switch of course. Mount said aux connector, and switch into dash. Bob's your uncle ! Since you plan to install this monster, the afforemention should be no sweat!
this is a fantastic build and ill do it on my car the only thing missing here is a way to auto shut it off once the power is interrupted and turn it on when power is restored. it would be great if you make a video on how to install it on a car
I would be excited to see how you put this in your car. That would be a video I would definitely be watching.
OOOOO for the love of god please follow up on this one a few times lol. There's a billion "retro pie on a pie in a [insert classic game system] shell!" videos out there now, the idea is kind of over played, stuff like this with real world uses is exactly what little SOC boards like this shine at, can't wait to see how this goes, super interested in doing a build like this myself depending on what the final capabilities end up being
And to plus one onto this, I wonder if the new Pi, or even a slightly OC'd new pi, would run the maps and stuff more smoothly. PI DAY just keeps getting better lol!!!
I love your fist and second reason about why we do this.
This is a great start on my project I'm dreaming up. I want to replace the 2006 factory nav system in my Honda with a pi running AA. The only thing I think will hold me up is the nav touchscreen... I doubt it will be easy to get it to USB. I expect the video is standard RCA. The radio and backup camera are totally separate from the nav
Amazing! Thank you for amazingly clear step by step explanation!! I'm gonna build this! Love from India !❤
Cant wait to see the car setup. Think im gonna do this for my whip also
I use SUSE IMG writer. Extract the file and write it to SD card.
I'm looking to make something like this and print my own 2DIN chassis face plate for the screen.. Guess it comes down to which amp/HAT to use and how to cool the setup tucked behind the screen. Can't wait for a follow up vid on this!
I'm thinking about adopting this for my eBike
Do it! My one concern would be voltage fluctuation under different motor load, but worth trying.. I'm gunna definitely stick this on a motorbike soon
I would love to see if there are any updates or new improvements to a project like this in the last 2+ years.
Been looking for something like this for my motorcycle.
Android head units are getting very good, to the point where the units are single din with double din screens, full Android experience, nav, UA-cam, Netflix, Spotify, you name it.
Could you do an update video with bluetooth, buttons for volume control and maybe even show how to get steering wheel buttons to work.
I've been thinking about doing this for a while, now that I know it's this easy I'm definitely going to do it.
I disagree with the sign off this is very useful. There are other videos that show how you can integrate a rear camera with this and have all the function of android auto (which is different than an android tablet because it is connected to your phone for all internet and calling purposes) and better than a phone because you can permanently mount it in a convenient location in your car and not worry about hands free/ cell phone laws.
Good job. What SD card are you using? I'm facing some poor performance and I'm thinking this is caused by low R/W SD card speed
Hello try a external SSD or HDD if your still wanting to do that 4 years later
hi there.. great video.. but need to ask, what about shut down and start up of pi when linked through a 12v lighter socket.. would this cause issues with the pi?.. how to get around this please?... taa
yeah ! i´m running it here on a RPI2 and works like charm ! I also saw it on NovaSpirt tech, that guy is really great.
This but with a radio tuner and aerial input and radio dash interface and this would make a perfect headunit replacement..
I also just had an idea for a popout feature where the screen is housed in a popout style screen and you could add wireless charging and a storage spot for your phone.
This is a awesome idea. I have older vehicles and want to replace my head unit with this. Is there a version that doesn't have to have a radio installed All ready? Maybe use a usb soundcard? And some kind of am fm digital radio module for when I'm to lazy to plug phone in? How bout 2 amp service to phone to charge?
pinch to zoom works fine with the raspberry pi screen.
Saw a video after watching novaspirit tech's video, where a guy had this setup with the pic cam (w/ wide angle lens) and such wired into his ignition system and gearbox so when he was in reverse he had a backup cam, and all sorts of things. Imagin when bluetooth starts working you could use a bluetooth OBDII scanner for diagnostics and such too.
I simply love inventions that absolutely complicate everything. And to add value it's pretty expensive for absolutely nothing that you achieve. And the cherry on top of this is the 2 reasons he put : because u can and because you like raspberry... Just insane .
Does it works with the Hifiberry DAC plugged to the Pi, too? Got a RPi 3 with the CarPi Project, but Android Auto looks much better.
Read the docs on Github. TLDR; Yes.

cant wait to finish the build for my dads car
Great answer 👍 to the question why do this on a raspberry pi. Nice work man.
Can you make a video in which you build this in your car?
Nice video thanks for all these great vids! And you from the valley?? I was like the heck fresno! I thought i was looking at my own maps for a bit.
This was a very cool video man, just stumbled on your channel and subscribed.
You definitely have some stuff I'm interested in on here. 😀
For the car maybe connect android TV box + rasberry touch screen, possible?
Hi ETA Great video I did the CarPC with Kodi and I installed after watching The only problem I have is nothing happens when I put my phone in
Great video, thanks a lot!!
Quick question: Can it work without a touchscreen display? Like I hook up a 32" TV through HDMI and touchpad for mouse-pointer inputs??
i don't think this is pointless at all. android auto on your phone is a pretty horrible experience without a solid phone mount, and if you want something that is any bit permanent i think this is the way to go. i'm definitely going to do this!
Hi, i would like to do the same thing but with raspberry pi4 and a bigger display but i can't find the programs for the new raspberry and i can't find 8-10 "touchscreen display at reasonable prices. Could you make an updated video at least regarding the raspberry?
Thx for the attention.
I did it and works great 👍🏻.... Thanks for sharing pal...
Do I need to install raspbian first or directly the crank shaft
@@MamtaSharma-ig2gr you can install crank shaft directly.
Hey, I was thinking about this project and I would like to ask if you know any way to use it on vertical screen? I was also thinking about radio etc. full connectivity. There won't be problem to connect audio, but AM/FM radio will be.
Hey I know this is an old post but I have few questions, could it be possible to hookup a backup camera to the pi? Where it could display from the camera? I could hookup the trigger switch to the backup lights or the wires that comes off my gear selector assembly I could pin point which exact wire are triggering backup lights and hook it to that! If so please explain also is Apple carplay supported yet for it?
I think it makes sense if you want to have a dedicated setup.
Perhaps a stupid question, but if I connect the raspberry to another media device, for example the renout media nav, would this other device identify the respbary auto?
Can we use an Asus Tinkerboard instead of a Rasberry Pi.
Please tell
Do you know if the PI can connect to the cars bluetooth? so i dont have to connect my phone all the time. thanks
Very well polished video, are you able to do fast charging off the USB 3 Port of the Raspberry Pi, I have a Note 8 and would like to know if it's possible.
Woot Raleigh! Hello from Wilson NC.
Really awesome and thanks for posting. I have a first and second version Raspberry Pi's that I bought but just am too busy with too many other projects and life in general. I can refer to your video any time in future.. thank you for being a tinkerer just as I am . Plus I do have to sleep once and a while..wishing sleep was optional.
I love Pop! OS also.
Whatever insides your phone will be shown up in the screen of raspberry pi? like the apps in your phone?
Is there a way to use this with a wireless connection to the phone? I have a screen in my car with android auto when phone is plugged in using a cable
Please do a side by side when using a Pie 3+ vs Pie 4,Im really interested to see any performance improvements when using a pi4, I would like to use WAZE with an external GPS, also use Spotify, and play mp4's, is it possible to connect a reverse camera connection to the pie???
Can uou make or link a video with the official diaplay? I enjoy your work.
nice vid ETA! thank you for your easy to follow vids. cant wait to see it running with bluetooth, and running in a car. keep the good videos coming man!!
This will be great for my car.
Does the phone charge decently when it's connected? Also is there a way to hook a mic to the pi so u can pick up phone calls from that?
Would this work with a lattepanda? I wonder if itll be snappier given te increased processing power. Especially the wireless function
Can you please post a video to show how Android auto wireless as well?
Thank you very much i have Android auto in my car now !!
There must be a way to turn digital photo albums (the screens) to play games or video by now, right?
Great walkthrough. Thanks!
Thanks for the great content!
Is calling supported via auto? Mic and all?
This is great project and have a look on the next one: OpenAuto Pro
Can the phone's bluetooth still be connected to the car? Or does Android Auto need bluetooth to work?
Any chance you could show how to get this running on the Pi 4? I've been looking around and there isn't anything good for that yet, just vague hard to follow directions
Nice man! I've been eyeing off these $50 touch screens on GEEK/Wish for Raspberry Pi's for a few weeks, I might have to get one. Though the Raspberry Pi brand would be cool to get instead.
It lacks some very important and without, the volume keys. Is there a possibility to add them to the screen?
I think you forgot to mention that when Etcher is done writing to the SD card and you remove it and put back in you get a few Errors Asking to Format Card for those who Don't know.
does the raspberry pi come with bluetooth? like can you connect to bluetooth via the touchscreen? i have an fm transmitter
Nice project. i wonder is there any way to connect to this unit the stering wherl control and other CAN BUS features ?
The raspberry pi itselv doesent have CAN but there are some SPI to CAN ICs, since the raspberry has SPI
Awesooooome ! I Really like your videos keep up the good work!
HI
thanks for the great video !
Do you think a rasp zero would do the trick ? or would it be to slow ?
thanks
I really want to make one of these. Been tinkering with Raspberrys for awhile. How are you getting the Pi and the screen powered when connected to the vehicle?
I connected it to the ignition line, it's 12V so you have to step it down to 5V. I need a script to safe shutdown the pi when I turn the car off though.
how would you go about using voice commands? would you have to use a usb audio adapter that supports 3.5 input as well as output? If you go that route, are those types of usb devices natively supported in the Pi's OS?
Can you display OBD2 port data on the go with this setup or is this just useful for android auto? Can you use the pin I/O on the raspberry to give commands to the car?
One advantage is having a bigger screen for us old people.
Hi. I would like to try this version of OpenAuto but but can it be integrated with an OBDII application for monitoring the car parameters via bluetooth?
Thanks
Nice Work.
Works this with mouse and keyboard buttons? I need this on a Audi oem screen.
I did turn android auto with Mp5 head unit + my Samsung Galaxy plugin into the head unit with mirrorlinks and it works as it should be all this cost me just $20 from AliExpress just bought the radio from am
I'm thinking about doing this on my MaxiScooter... I'd love a round screen though, any ideas about that?
Will this setup also charge the phone or would you need a otg cable to charge phone and to transfer data
Hey why don't you do a project like this for Motorcycles like Harley Davidson Street Glide where we can connect our phone for navigation?!
same work install bike or car, not different
Can you give a look at the Carberry HAT and the AutoPi?
Great build thanks for sharing, one question can you have the 7 inch screen in portrait ? Project I’m thinking of doing this in doesn’t have the space to mount it in landscape.
Possibly.
can I use a raspberry pi 3B+ as an interface between a cell phone with Android Auto and my Toyota 2020 Camry car screen. It would be a WiFI to the raspberry pi and a USB between
the raspberry pi and the car screen's USB port. This would let me have a WiFi connection between my cell phone and Car screen to run apps on the car screen. Thanks,
When you say you need an android phone. Does that mean it has to have a data plan or is just a Google phone without phone plan okay?
What you can say about this screen when sunny? How you change brightness?
A question, Android Auto will work, ok... but the audio system (I'm talking about the microphone) that enable the voice command system, will be commanded by the raspberry or the phone?
What's the advantage of this versus a 7-10 inch Android tablet?
Running AA on a tablet isn't running your phone calls and controlling your communications, just running in standalone mode and you either need to tether it to your phone or pay for another mobile data service line. In order to get full phone integration on a larger screen you need to do this or buy a $300 in dash head unit
tablets tend to have built-in lithium batteries that will swell up and stop functioning in extreme heat. may be able to get away with it if you live in a cool climate but in the southwest, forget it.
I hope, I’m not too late.... Is there an option to get an original Carmanufacturer Software in it? I want to install this system in my old 95‘ bmw and want to upgrade it in a modern line. Please help me
Can raspberry pi connect with the auto canbus? Like ports for radio and other connecting ports from the car?
