    Quick clarification: Kill La Kill IF is published by ArcSystem, but not developed. Development itself is from a different team. The video's point on it is still the same regardless of this though.

    Your background info is kind of weak, some more information about Arcsys' past work with 3D on BlazBlue or the Guilty Gear prototype would have helped establish a timeline on this particular implementation of 3D in 2D fighting games.

  • @StickMaster500

    This is basically the soul reason on why I love games like TF2, Dragon Ball FighterZ and Smash Bros.
    Just their art style alone is enough for me to pick up and try these games and have them stick with me for many years to come as it tries to act realistic but the cartoony art style makes it so that some things that wouldn’t make sense in a realistic game won’t matter because you know it’s a cartoon and that we’ve had so much connection to cartoons since we we’re children. No wonder people say that TF2 looks like it was made by Pixar.
    Also, nice sideburns.

      Arc Sys just use the Unreal Engine 3 to make their games. It's their techniques that allow them to pull that off.
      Fun fact, in that GDC talk, it was mentioned they still use Softimage which is a software Autodesk ought the rights to and abandoned to remove the competition and they use it because it's the only software in he market that allows them to animate normals directly on the mesh.
      Also, if you want a a good 3D anime, Land of The Lustrous was by far my favorite series from 2017.

    1. It's called "Cel Shading", not "Cell shading".
    2. Team Fortress did not use cel shading, it used a harsher-step lighting function, that is approximating the look of cel shading, but is softer and also more complex to compute.
    3. Legend of Zelda used cel shading for *some* things, and softer shading for others. It depended on where it could afford to make things soft.
    4. Your points on framerate are inaccurate. Low framerate is a small part of it. The framerate needs to be variable. If it's fixed you fall into the trap that Into the Spiderverse fell into, and end up with a choppy feeling sequence in parts where you wouldn't have had otherwise if it were animated "traditionally".

    This video makes me happy, reminding me of my times in high school in an animation elective.
    Hearing “stretch and squash” definitely made me giggle. And it helps that this was my best form of animation tricks... it just sucks that I’m not motivated enough to come up with stuff to do when making something!
    This is totally unrelated, if you ever get the time, I recommend looking up my teacher “William Barder” who’s been an animator for decades, and having a cartoonish art style I enjoyed when I was seventeen.
    A small edited addition:
    I looked him up, and there’s apparently not a whole lot said about him, other than some of his career. Huh... well that’s well underplayed.

    This is wrong. TF2 is NOT Cel Shaded. The developers have stated so themselves. Cartoony characters with bright colors =/= Cel Shading. Team Fortress 2 has soft gradient shadows and is using a type of Phong shading. Just like Borderlands isn't cel-shaded. Oh, and it's called Cel , not Cell.

    Good video, but I've never heard of tf2 being cell shaded before. Even the video referenced doesn't ever refer to it as "cell shading". Cell shading involves hard flat color shading, where there is no gradient interpolation between polygons whatsoever, which tf2 does not do. Having high contrast and a high ambient is not the same thing as cell shading. But, uh, I love your stuff.

      GodHatesMe How the fuck can you say the game is dead when everything you said following that are assumptions and nothing more? This game was received amazingly well by critics and fans alike. With that reception, it's fucking ridiculous to assume the game is dead just because it LOOKS that way. There are things going on behind the scenes that we don't know about.

    The game is gorgeous when it comes to its design, visually. But in terms of gameplay, its hardly an ArcSystem game. Sure its good due to its easy access to new players, but that sort of kills it for die hard fighting game fans with the lack of neutral, and the surprisingly similar combo routes for nearly every character. I know some are exceptions but they all consist of the same principle. Being a GGrev, tekken 7, sf player.... Well if its a fighting game, I've played it. A lot. But yeah, being someone who has experienced all of that, Dragon balls feels simply off. Its not a fighting game, its more of an introduction to the scene. As that, its great, but as anything else, its not the same.

    • @ESOFguy0134
      @ESOFguy0134 5 років тому +8

      I think most of the game's depth lies in the crazy offensive mixups present, which can be daunting to pull off. Sure, the neutral game is somewhat simplistic, but saying the game isn't a fighting game because of this feels super unfair

    • @IANDURBECK
      @IANDURBECK 5 років тому +2

      @@ESOFguy0134 I can see your point, and what you're defending. Also I should be more clear on what I said in my comment. Its not a full fighting game, its more like an introduction to the type. It is still a fighting game, just not one that is as serious and complex as many others. Also the "crazy offensive mixups" you spoke of, aren't anything new. Tekken is even worse on that, mechanically speaking. The difference is, dragon ball has the side switching (street fighter) but with teleports to fit the dragon ball gameplay style (altho telegraphic). It has high and low mix ups (tekken ads the mids and high/low crushes and even side steps). And if you want to go with the Block strings, every game has those.
      The game isn't bad, entirely. But it certainly isn't comparable to the traditional fighting games we have today (not counting street fighter V and MVCi but those games would need a whole rant just to explain that. And I'm sure everyone knows that already by this point).
      In conclusion, the Fighting game DBFZ, is a good entry point for newcomers. And you can tell it was made for just that purpose with the lack of a neutral game, many tools to bypass the little neutral it could potentially have, and the auto combo mechanic + simple combo routes you can do. (Not counting the harder combos you can pull, which some are still very simple compared to other games. Say SFIV).

      I think you still may not be giving the game enough credit, but I don't think I could change your mind if I wanted to. Regardless I appreciate how civil your tone is, I wish more disagreements on the Internet went like this

      @@ESOFguy0134 I hate arguing without facts to back it up and without being open to other people's opinions. Arguing is about proving your point, and should you fail to do that, to give a chance to this new one you've been presented with.
      I clearly understand where you're coming from with your arguments and why you would defend the game. It's still fun and its still good, in its own right. But when it comes on a more serious point of view, in the big scenes and such, I can't agree that it is as great in potential as other competitors. But this is one opinion on the internet among millions. I respect yours, but I defend mine. And so do you defend yours.

    Something you missed is that EVERYTHING in GGXRD was hand animated. They used no frame in- betweening no invrese kinematics and no physics simulations. The models are directly animated by hand on every frame using bones i.e. every single frame of animation on the model is a keyframe.
    Regarding lighting tricks, they used simplified proxy objects and transferred the normal directions to the triangles in the character model then hand edited the normals on each frame to remove any lighting artifacts. By doing this they could create simplified lighting and shadows that were based on simple geometric objects rather than the actual topography of the character model (e.g. a sphere for the head, cylinders for the arms, etc). In FighterZ it appears they made this realtime rather than part of the modeling and animation process like it was in GGXRD. If you look at the models in an editor they have an invisible "marshmallow man" object surrounding the character model that is probably a lighting proxy.
    Outlnes are crated in two ways. External lines are just made by having a second slightly larger version of the character model with inward facing black triangles that is rendered before the character model is. Internal lines are created with tiled line textures that are drawn onto the model with UV texture ordinates so that there is no texture blurring of the lines.
    In GGXRD and FighterZ there are two versions of the chacater models, a closeup version and a long view version. The long view version is designed so that facial and body details are more visible when rendered at a smaller size on the screen.
    There is a reason why nobody but Arc System Works does this, it's a huge amount of extra work and basically eliminates the time saving advantages of 3D animation over 2D.
