I’d say mithrix from risk of rain 2 is one of the best boss battles in the rouge like genre. He has the iconic soundtrack, the appearance and the demeanour
Honestly, yes. He’s never too easy and never too hard, sure it’ll take you 3-5 runs before you kill him but in every fight after your still extremely careful because you know what he’s capable of.
Other good ones: -Hades from Hades His character is really well fleshed out, his gameplay is punishing and mostly unique to him, he looks really cool and intimidating, his soundtrack is fantastic (and I don’t even like metal that much), and he has a hidden second phase, and even a third hidden phase thanks to Extreme Measures. -The Queen from Dead Cells What makes her so cool is that she’s the main character but better. This subverts expectations because previously, the mc was thought to be a unique anomaly. She taunts you throughout the fight, her design is elegant and intimidating, and her relationship with the main character is surprisingly complicated. Gameplay-wise, she can do things only the player can do, like reflect, parry, and grapple. She’s not just tougher than the other final boss, she’s more interesting.

Appearance: Zeus but cooler, so iconic Soundtrack: Is almost shocking in it’s abruptness and melancholy. Expectations: Ends up being one of the most low-key bosses in the game, which is somehow more impactful than if From had just gone balls to the wall. Makes you think “woah wait, what??” Love this boss.
Another point to make is in combination of all the previous points, the boss battle should be memorable. Pretty much successfully pulling off these points of what makes a boss battle great will instantly make them memorable such as their gameplay and music. Pokemon Champions instantly come to mind.
Gary Oak is such a simple but effective final Boss for Red/Blue/Yellow. You're constantly outplaying him, beating him despite him being slightly ahead, and then *he* becomes the champion! It's such a "no shit" move nowadays, but for a gameboy game, I really think that was pretty neat. Him constantly belittling you helped a lot, too. Make me hate, sympathize or feel SOME emotion toward a boss at all, otherwise he's just a tough guy with a banger OST and cool presentation.
There is an exception, albeit an obvious one. Memorable for the wrong reasons. Frustrating, annoying, has a shit ton of HP, voice lines. The best example if from Xenoblade (spoilers for the boss of Bionis Heart): Fucking Lorithia. She requires a specific team setup, her arena is covered in damaging ether, she's a fucking bitch, and the infamous "You'll pay for your insolence".

In my honest opinion I feel that Sekiro provides the best boss fights in every single way. Im a sucker for human vs human fights. I remember the second time I faced Genichiro It felt like I was actually battling an equal, the setting, the music, the badassery, everything fit perfectly into the settings and the characters.

Nobody gon talk about my boy Isshin? Dude got a sword, spear and a gun. He also has lightning attacks, several unblockables and combat arts. He's testing the player to use everything they've learned in the game. Fck Demon of Hatred tho. Mofo was a dodge-poke monster in a game where parry was established.
You forgot the setup- how you’re introduced to the boss and what you know emotionally about it matters so much. (Bloodborne and gungeon spoilers) E.g. gehrman from bloodborne wouldn’t have been anywhere near as sad if you didn’t know his backstory and his role as mentor throughout the game Also the resourceful rat from etg with you having to follow the clues he leaves to navigate the maze to even get to the boss. Beating him is so much better as throughout the rest of the game he’s been constantly nicking your stuff and laughing at you
The best boss battles for me are ones that feel like someone with similar martial skill to your character, and with their own fighting style and relatable agenda. Where it feels like they could be the main character.

I literallly thought of you 5 seconds ago, checked my sub box and boom; new vid.
Well, that's what the telepathy bell is for. DUH
Personally my favorite boss fights have been from Kingdom Hearts 2. They all pretty much teach you game mechanics as the story progresses, and then you have the post-game Data Battles and Lingering Will, which push your abilities to the extreme.
>mentions great boss soundtracks
>doesn’t mention Furi
:(
I was gonna say...
Furi: "Do you like boss battles? Well that's all we got so come on over!"
also
>doesn't mention Ori And The Blind Forest
fucking hell Funke
Shit soundtrack tbh.
@@Hydrolaevea There's almost no boss fight in Ori tho.
"If it doesn't have three drum sets and two distorted guitars, it isn't a boss fight."
Universal collapse (devourer of gods) and stained brutal calamity (supreme calamitas): we'd like to introduce ourselves.
a man of culture
Or trumpets
Ludwig the accursed and holy blade theme: _Hello There_
gotta love those calamity bells
haha bell go D O N G
Demeanor:
Constantly talks down to you and constantly makes you feel like your efforts are in vain.
Gameplay:
Creates new weapons to deal more damage which gives the player a choice on what to attack.
Appearance:
Towers over you, and makes you feel insignificant.
Expectations:
Is actually phase 2 of this bossfight that has a beautifully animated, yet short cutscene in-between phases, said phase 1 acting as if it was the true end to the boss.
Who am I talking about?
Yaldab-
*The mad scientist from Cuphead.*
Ngl, thought the top pick was gonna be Dr. Zomboss
I dont think he exactly subverts expectations
@@birdheavy311 I wasn't expecting a giant robot being operated by a big brain zombie to be the last boss I'd fight though. It was definitely a memorable boss fight due to how out of nowhere it was and how hype I was when I beat it as a 8 year old kid.
That music is a bop to this day.
@@birdheavy311 Then I bet you didn't expect his weakness to be his pancreas.
@@toxic_shr00m No, no. That was the *other* guy
i remember when i first "beat" the final boss of castle crashers
i opened that big golden chest, expecting riches to rain down from the sky
instead i got my ass eaten by a huge spider demon
I love Armstrong, it’s probably one of my favorite boss fights.
Sam DLC's Armstrong, though...
The Devourer of Gods
Conquest: “You are no god, but I shall feast on your essence nonetheless”
“Don’t get cocky kid”
“Delicious”
War: Multiple attack patterns, Mini Me’s, lasers, and portals
Death: big ass space worm
Famine: Scourge of the Universe and Universal collapse
Expectations: “Its not over yet kid”
Calamity is an amazing mod
Thus was the best boss fight explanation video I’ve watched 😭 it’s all here, in full detail. I didn’t expect you to go through what makes a bad boss fight too. Good video !
A badly designed boss is youtube's demonetization system
Yeah unfair hitbox and no hints of when it's going to strike, it should really be nerfed in the sequel
UA-cam will just copyright strike the sequel tho
What the ffffffffffffffffffuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuunke I know.
From what I hear it also just takes forever to beat, it’s like you’re doing chip damage to something with 1,000,000 hp.
DMC 3's Virgil is the best boss
not wrong
You're goddamn right
“You are not worthy as my opponent.”
No, DMC5 Vergil is better.
well it seems the lord has returned
the boss soundtrack for the soldier+pocket medic is the music of getting dominated
I genuinely love the notion that for most people who enjoy playing games on its hardest mode out the gate, Armstrong's just on another level.
I say this because I, too, have never beaten Armstrong, dude fucking has 200% health, the game just drops a bomb on you and I love it.
If you want another challenge you can start calamity on malice :)
Witness the boss tag passed down the Armstrong line FOR GENERATIONS!
That transition at 7:17 is fucking amazing
"Earthbound"
"Child hood"
Pick one
Monster Hunter be like, "We got a final boss fight for your boss fight, and sometimes you'll get an interrupting miniboss-bossfight in your normalfight-bossfight too"
Every other game: why do I hear boss music😰
MGR: WHY DON’T I HEAR BOSS MUSIC 😤
Gotta love when the video just tells you "btw spoilers for every game ever"
In my honest opinion I feel that Sekiro provides the best boss fights in every single way. Im a sucker for human vs human fights. I remember the second time I faced Genichiro It felt like I was actually battling an equal, the setting, the music, the badassery, everything fit perfectly into the settings and the characters.
spoilers for like... every single video game ever ahead (including sekiro)
HA, jokes on you, i cant play those games cuz my mommy said no (i just have a bad computer)
FUNKe Work better and you will get money
too late :(
Hey you handsome punk, you spoiled me sekiro, I hate me, but the video was really good. Continue you're my best video game funkE. It was a good idea subscribing.
Alright, he's not that mad, i'm letting this one go.
I just instantly fell in love with your channel. These edits and comedy are choice

"What defines a boss?"
" *Nanomachines, son* "
You forgot the setup- how you’re introduced to the boss and what you know emotionally about it matters so much. (Bloodborne and gungeon spoilers)
E.g. gehrman from bloodborne wouldn’t have been anywhere near as sad if you didn’t know his backstory and his role as mentor throughout the game
Also the resourceful rat from etg with you having to follow the clues he leaves to navigate the maze to even get to the boss. Beating him is so much better as throughout the rest of the game he’s been constantly nicking your stuff and laughing at you
I would argue that fits Conquest well enough to be on the category
The points in this video by definition make Vergil in DMC5 one of the best bosses to ever be created.
The best boss battles for me are ones that feel like someone with similar martial skill to your character, and with their own fighting style and relatable agenda. Where it feels like they could be the main character.
Reminds me of the sword master dude in furi, feels like fighting your equal
@@piemaniac9410 FINALLY someone mentions Furi. Awesome fucking game! I loved every boss except the Burst with her final Phase and the Star who I still haven't beat...
Monster Hunters monsters are each like an amazing boss
Except the real boss, beating the huge magma thing is boring A F
@@danyosuna7276 all of them are boss fights
@@danyosuna7276 literally every monster in Monster Hunter is a boss. Zorah Magdaros was only a mid-game boss. Also, all the other MH games didn't (from memory, but I'm kinda biased) have boring mid-game bosses.

Bosses are hands down my favorite part of video games as a whole, no question about it. Thank you SO much for this vid dude!!
8:18 YES, THANK YOU!
catching up with FUNKe's uploads, but can i just say that this is easily the best form of mentioning patreon supporters.
So glad you added Thalamus and Amulvaro from Death’s Gambit in there, even if it was for a few seconds. They really do tick most of the boxes.
1:06 that’s my favorite part of the video don’t fuck with this Senator!
HE'S BACK WITH ANOTHER UPLOAD!!! PRAISE THE LORD!!!
Not even a mention to :
Bloodborne
Hollow Knight
Enter The Gungeon
Castlevania

;(
ikr, every time i fought the lich i was like, "is it dead yet? no... well shit"
and dont even get me started on that draguns third phase....
PLAYED COLLEGE BALL YOU KNOW. COULDA MADE PRO IF I DIDNT JOIN THE NAVY!
Yea i mean, soul masters second phase come on now that was moderately unexpected
Agreed on Hollow Knight.
Every boss in the game applied at least 4 of these principles, and those that only applied 4 principles turned up those principles to 11.
Gungeon's bosses feel kinda tanky (and have dps caps ewww) but the actual fight mechanics and their design is great
I think one of my favorite boss battles is supreme calamatis. It has a banging sound track, multiple stages, and the boss can kill you instantly
My brain this entire video:
"Your journey ends here, pilot
the sky's belong to me.
Nowhere to run...
Nowhere to hide"
Yes
That Soldier with the pocket medic are nuts. Their movement is really coordinated, the soldier know how to rocket jump and the medic knows how to surf. One wrong move and with a swing of the ubersaw, the medic already has uber.
