This might be somewhat wrong. I red a report saying that if the ball is shaved a few hours before use (like 8-12 hours) it grows some very short stubbles. These stubbles break up the airflow around the ball, creating small wortexes that work like a cushion when the ball flows trough the air. It works much the same way as pimples on a golf-ball. The result is less drag that slows the ball down, and the throw gets longer.
The exact time before competition the ball should be shaved needs to be based on individual testing, as every ball is different and there is large differences in hair growth-rate, texture etc.
Ultimately these finding might save the wild population, as hammer-throwers often go trough many balls before settling on the one they prefer. With this new knowledge, it will be easier to quickly discern which balls are wanted and release the rest back into the wild.
Today too many unwanted balls live in squalor conditions or are simply put down as traveling to the hunting grounds and releasing them is seen as too much of a hassle, man.

technically, the hammer with peach-fuzz should fly the farthest as the hair would actually minimize the formation air vortices that would form more easily on smooth shaven balls. If you look closely at the wings of passenger planes, you will actually see small vertical lines built parallel with the movement of the wind to take advantage of this precise fact. Its similar with dimples on golf balls.

  • @greengrass8785
    @greengrass8785 6 років тому +68

For those wondering they do not put a wig on the hammer ( that would be very stupid) , its natural, they use Bosly in the process of making the ball, for faster velocity and higher density. The ingredients they found mix well with the steel when it is still a liquid before being poured into a mold. After its poured, the metal is then quenched in water causing the Bosly to meld with the steel particuals. Because of the rapid decease in temperature the Bosly causes the ball to grow 'hair', which is actually steel mixed with artificial hormones that create a almost human like quality hair. The process repeats every time the hammer is exposed to heat. Hopefully this explanation is enough.

Sorry Onion Sportology your physics is not sound.
A slightly hairy hammer does have reduced drag as the flow becomes turbulent earlier and the flow can longer follow the curvature of the hammer. For a freshly shaven hammer the flow is laminar and detaches earlier from the surface creating greater drag. Please do not spread pseudoscience, when it comes to hammer shaving styles. The clean shaven hammer is probably a fad of this olympics and will die out soon.

This study was so biased. We need to learn to respect all types of hammers, regardless of their hair.

This study wasn't biased at all. Bias is an opinion, this study only showed facts

Personally I think the study is rather biased. The hair textures we're obviously different from each ball, how do you expect the difference in the hair type of each ball could skew the results entirely ?

Thank you! Thankfully, the continued criticism has forced The Onion to adopt a more scientific method of measurement. This is what they use nowadays:
      Length: Football fields
      Mass: Toyota Corollas
      Time: UA-cam videos
      Temperature: McDonald's coffee mugs
Brightness: Phone screens at max brightness during the middle of the night
      Sound volume: Loud, angry Italians

I’d like to see how different shapes affect performance. For example, the landing strip vs the Charlie Chaplin, the lightening bolt vs the rising sun, the David Suzuki vs the handlebar mustache, and finally the bush vs the bald Eagle but with severe razor burn.
