A fully shaved hammer has the added benefit of making the chain look longer 👍
Okay this is brilliant
This is way underrated
Excelence
Thanks, i hate it.
Ooo
I shaved my kid and I can say that he flew a lot farther when I threw him
Oooooohhh how far?
Yeah how far?
Parent of the year
Thanks for the tip!
This test is flawed the time he was shaved his dead body from the first throw was limp and creating drag pls fix this
This also explains why convertibles driven by bald headed drivers are faster than drivers with hair
lol
I won't believe it until The Onion spoonfeeds me the same information
MTC0316 LMAO

I love that this video doesn’t really have any jokes in it. It’s like legit analysis oh the effect of hair on hammer distance
it's a video about shaving hairy balls.

For April fools, the onion should post a real article. Then one year, they do a fake one and fool so many people.
And after the confusion they should make a correction post apologizing and adding errors to the accurate article
#RealHammersHaveHair Don't shame a hammer for being natural. Hammer throwers show an unrealistic view of hammers that can negatively affect everyone.
I stand by this movement 💪🏼
Call me oldfashioned, but i think a Hammer should be shaved. They aren't pretty to look at with so much fuzzy hair, and they don't work as well either. You leftie-snowflakes make me crazy😁
I just trim my hammer a bit so it doesn't get stuck in the bushes or something when I'm just sending it out back
Thank goodness they didn't even mention that flap of skin at the end of the hammer!
Ew, unshaved hammers can grow mites and trap all kinds of nasty stuff in it. Shave your hammers, people
Uses "Feet"
Then uses "Centimeters"
Wait that's illegal
When does it uses cm?
No, he said "six per cent greater" which with bad handwriting will read like "simple centimeter".
@@plffuihngiub43iioYou seem to be too earnest. That's too funny.
@@NICEFINENEWROBOT whats the joke. Is there no joke.
This might be somewhat wrong. I red a report saying that if the ball is shaved a few hours before use (like 8-12 hours) it grows some very short stubbles. These stubbles break up the airflow around the ball, creating small wortexes that work like a cushion when the ball flows trough the air. It works much the same way as pimples on a golf-ball. The result is less drag that slows the ball down, and the throw gets longer.
The exact time before competition the ball should be shaved needs to be based on individual testing, as every ball is different and there is large differences in hair growth-rate, texture etc.
Ultimately these finding might save the wild population, as hammer-throwers often go trough many balls before settling on the one they prefer. With this new knowledge, it will be easier to quickly discern which balls are wanted and release the rest back into the wild.
Today too many unwanted balls live in squalor conditions or are simply put down as traveling to the hunting grounds and releasing them is seen as too much of a hassle, man.
Hmmm, I would like to see this report. Also, nobody cares about hammers, let them die for all we care.
Bro its is an joke.the oniun is not a real news show. 1v1 me in fortnite noob

technically, the hammer with peach-fuzz should fly the farthest as the hair would actually minimize the formation air vortices that would form more easily on smooth shaven balls. If you look closely at the wings of passenger planes, you will actually see small vertical lines built parallel with the movement of the wind to take advantage of this precise fact. Its similar with dimples on golf balls.
well, you just ruined my potential to be a bar room sporting and aerodynamics expert. I hope you're happy now.
As if the real Olympians aren't using illegal waxing techniques. WAKE UP PEOPLE.
Just Brazilians!
*sheeple
2016 apparently
"Illegal waxing techniques"? What? What kind of absolute nonsense are you talking about? There _are_ no illegal waxing techniques! All methods of hammer hair removal are equally legal! Did you even watch the fucking video? Even _laser hair removal, which permanently destroys the follicles and prevents hair from ever regrowing, ever, is still legal._
theuncalledfor that's what they want you to think

I'm stoked.

Muslim hammer throwers are at a big disadvantage.
Just goes to show how ingrained islamaphobia is in olympic culture.
They can use hammer grown in USA then
@Boi Maybe that was true in the past, but recent improvements in the design of hammer turbans has put them very close in performance to shaved hammers.
The Orthodox Jewish ones aswell
What about Amish throwers?
I have a retired hammer, after years of shaving him, he has succumb to a rare form of hammer-pattern baldness. I got him Bosley's Just For Ham and he now has a more lushes flow than I.
I always shave my hammer, it's just more hygienic.
nice neely icon
that's a myth. hairy hammers produce natural oils which cleanse the surface
I find a hirsute hammer to be highly erotic
this is NOT true. the surface area of the hair allows germs to be dispersed more openly and prevents buildup. Please stop spreading this toxic myth. There's a reason that hammers evolved to grow hair over many thousands of years.
For those wondering they do not put a wig on the hammer ( that would be very stupid) , its natural, they use Bosly in the process of making the ball, for faster velocity and higher density. The ingredients they found mix well with the steel when it is still a liquid before being poured into a mold. After its poured, the metal is then quenched in water causing the Bosly to meld with the steel particuals. Because of the rapid decease in temperature the Bosly causes the ball to grow 'hair', which is actually steel mixed with artificial hormones that create a almost human like quality hair. The process repeats every time the hammer is exposed to heat. Hopefully this explanation is enough.
Super helpful! Will do this with my own metal balls. Thank you!
I don't think you factored in the hair on the chain as well
This is shoddy reporting at best
HAIR DOES NOT GROW ON THE CHAIN.
Hair most definitely grows on the chain, though the amount may vary depending on its age.
Hair totally grows on the chain, just at a much slower rate than on the hammer
Yea it only grows on the balls
Depends on how well the hammer is aged. After a certain time, marked by "pew Berty", there's about a 50% chance that the chain will need daily shaving
Im just mad this looks so official. The writers had to have had some experience in real television programs like this 😂
This had way too much effort put into it
Not enough you mean

The style is so accurate and the delivery so dry that the video managed to completely defuse me throughout the second half. I wasn't laughing, I was just blowing air out of empty lungs.
Absurdity works so well when delivered professionally. The angle graphics, the details. I'm just floored.
I thought this said "hamsters" and I was very confused. Good to see it's all normal here!
I read the title as "Does Shaving A Hamster Really Make It Move Faster" and I was like... wtf?
I did my *research* and my conclusion was that no it doesn't they always die once they hit the ground so what's the point !!
( *Six hamsters were harmed during this experiment* ) .
But shaving hammers makes perfect sense, of course. Nothing interesting there.
me too
Sorry Onion Sportology your physics is not sound.
A slightly hairy hammer does have reduced drag as the flow becomes turbulent earlier and the flow can longer follow the curvature of the hammer. For a freshly shaven hammer the flow is laminar and detaches earlier from the surface creating greater drag. Please do not spread pseudoscience, when it comes to hammer shaving styles. The clean shaven hammer is probably a fad of this olympics and will die out soon.

The fact that the article is from nasa and roughly on topic make it 10x better lol
i like how the laser hair removal was a temp gun
At first I read "hamster" instead of "hammer". My disappointment increased when I noticed I wouldn't see a shaved hamster being thrown through the air
Thing is, I wouldn't even be surprised that it would be an onion video 😂
It's amazing how produced these videos are, the editors went all out

OK, I'll be the anal guy (no, not like that) who ruins the joke. Aerodynamic flying squirrels get dead real quick.
They fly just fine. But I shaved my pet flying squirrel once, and he flew straight up into the sky! I never saw him again.
I miss you, Nutsy.
How does he resist throwing hammers at the crowd??
I learnt more about shaving from this video than from my dad...

@@anaveragenascarfan9048 oof
Not sure what's more realistic.. Hammers growing hair or throwing a hammer 270ft with a one turn..
The hammer
Why not both
One thing, small imperfections in a spherical object actually make it fly faster. That is why professional golfers have scratched up their Golfball. (This was before they manufactured Golfball dimples). This stops air from getting stuck behind the Golfball holding the Golfball back.
2:49 "laser hair removing" that looks exactly like my Solight TE47 infrared thermometer. But what would I know, right?
There's random, there's *random* then there's this.
Imagine if Manscaped sponsored this
But what keeps the athletes from throwing the hammer at the nearest spectator?
Therefore, birds should be bald
It's cold out there, bald birds = dead birds
How the hell would they shave if they don't even have hands?
Watched this video while eating my Onion-recipe baked potato!
The recipe really works, the potato flesh just falls right off the bone.
This video was sponsored by dollar shave club
Actually a hammer with fuz would fly further, it’s the same principle behind the fuz on a tennis ball 🎾 or the dimples on a golf ball
We need to burn the bras or something like that.

My hammer doesn't like being shaved, so I haven't won a competition yet...at least it can't bite. No mouth, you see. It eats through it's rear end.
Don't you mean,
*_hairodynamic?_*
This study was so biased. We need to learn to respect all types of hammers, regardless of their hair.
This study wasn't biased at all. Bias is an opinion, this study only showed facts
Personally I think the study is rather biased. The hair textures we're obviously different from each ball, how do you expect the difference in the hair type of each ball could skew the results entirely ?
Wasn't there a scandel were a coach injected a hammer with cemo so there will be no hair what so ever.
I thought they allowed it last year?
I didnt look at who uploaded the video, and watched the whole thing. I was genuinely dumbfounded
But when will the truth come out if Bruno Mars does is gay?
That comment doesn't make any sense and what does it have to do with this ??
It makes all the sense, you must simply find the sense in your heart. Or just look up "Does Bruno Mars is Gay?" You're welcome.
+Laura Neko Don't be so grump, mate
This is so informative... Thanks!
Oh no I ate the onion
Fun fact, I’m pretty sure the laser hair removal thing was actually something used to tell temperature
As a dude high on LSD, I can say I go to The Onion to decide if I'm fucked up or not. If I find myself agreeing with most of this shit yeah, I'm way too fucked up.
The Onion is so dedicated to realism in their satire that they made Lukas Koller a real person.
They made him in their lab and trained him just to be in this video
You are doing a science video but using inches and feet. There is a problem here.
Thank you! Thankfully, the continued criticism has forced The Onion to adopt a more scientific method of measurement. This is what they use nowadays:
Length: Football fields
Mass: Toyota Corollas
Time: UA-cam videos
Temperature: McDonald's coffee mugs
Brightness: Phone screens at max brightness during the middle of the night
Sound volume: Loud, angry Italians

I’d like to see how different shapes affect performance. For example, the landing strip vs the Charlie Chaplin, the lightening bolt vs the rising sun, the David Suzuki vs the handlebar mustache, and finally the bush vs the bald Eagle but with severe razor burn.
