Long time ago there was a store called Borders and they'd have endcaps where you'd put on headphones and could listen to random CDs. I was in high school and I just randomly was able to listen to this album while standing in a store aisle and I just distinctly remember being floored by this song and its concept. Been a fan ever since. 20 years ago?
so bizarre to me still to think that we have to tell the future folks about things like borders etc where you could just go listen to music before you bought it lol
Late night in a hotel room on the road for work I was skipping through channels and just in time ti see McEnroe introduce DCFC. This was the clip I saw, and I have been a fan ever since!
Nice ... indy at its finest ....no screaming guitars .....no metal.... The next level of folk music Goes good with long Island tea....or a Alabama slammer
One of the things I definitely miss about them being a 4 piece band was seeing Chris and/or Ben change instruments mid song so seamlessly. I was blown away by how they did that so well when I saw them live
i've always known of death cab, but i was always a bigger postal service fan until one day i just played death cab on my ipod and i fell IN LOVE with them, i can't believe it took me such a long time.
They're INCREDIBLE live btw, haha. I drove a few hours and saw them in Kansas City, they were absolutely EPIC!!!! They're my all-time favorite band. They played for a solid two hours of pure awesomicity but they didn't play my favorite song (which is Styrofoam Plates) in the set and i was super bummed. But then they came out for the encore and it was the first song they played, best day of my life hahaha. Well.... i'm glad i told that near pointless story to a total stranger......
@@kenmasters1803I felt like Thank You For Today was the return to form. Either way, I didn’t like Codes And Keys, and Kintsugi was just eh for me, but I love the last two
Well i'm glad someone enjoyed my story!! Hahaha, but yeah, i do the same on the piano! If you get bored you sit down at the piano with headphones and figure out how to play the songs, it makes for an awesome way to pass the time haha. Some fun and easy songs of theirs to play are like Passenger Seat and Different Names For The Same Thing. Title and registration sounds kinda cool on the piano too haha
There are some amazing bands out right now, you just have to filter through so much crap, especially on the radio in my area. DCFC, Arcade Fire etc. are wonderful, and you will never hear them on the radio. You'll hear every clone rock band in the world, but nothing significant. This is a good time for music that is different, and it is getting better all the time.
11 years later, Arcade Fire are on the radio from selling out and death cab hit the charts a while ago. Dcab is still good though. Postal service still releases sporadically. Music didn’t really progress like you’d have liked I would imagine.
this band - DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE should most def. continue to make magic! They are incredible and are masters of their art.... I've heard far more depressing music! their music is emotive and beautiful!!!
Doesn't sound like there's much, if any effects. He's going through a compressor of some form (either a pedal or in the amp head) and maybe a bit of overdrive to boost the low end.
@ScaredPiglet Often, listening to stuff like this makes unhappy people feel better, because it's an expression of what they feel, instead of having it bottled up.
WeezerFan on their website it says Chris uses '52 Fender Tele Re-issue and Dr. Z amps. it says what pedals he uses too. deathcabforcutie. com, just look under gear.
@ScaredPiglet Hm, I don't become depressed listening to this, although the lyrics do seem sad. It makes me happy listening to music this good, but that's just me.
@YoureTerribl i would not say that "You are a Tourist" is a terrible song, but it seems like their new songs have less heart and meaning behind them. I guess I got spoiled with great songs like "Title and Registration" and "Transatlanticism"

Ben is such an amazing lyricist
It's funny that one of the best performances of this song was on a random CNBC show
agreen182 The host is a tennis legend!
man this song takes me back ... life is so much different then it was when i started listening to these guys :(
Tell me about it brother! Where does time go
This is beautiful! Maybe the best version of this song so far. Oh, man... i miss Chris Walla.
Marcus Avelar me too T-T
this is one of the best songs by death cab
Been listening to this band for more than half of my life now.. Godspeed Chris Walla on your new life in Norway.
Jordan Galileo Cortez is that what happened with him?

Listening this, I get transported back to listening to the OC in 2005
So much greatness in this performance.
this song is a masterpiece for those of us thinking of the one we used to be with. the feeling takes the wind out of me.
One of the things I definitely miss about them being a 4 piece band was seeing Chris and/or Ben change instruments mid song so seamlessly. I was blown away by how they did that so well when I saw them live

holy telecasterland my telecastergooodness. love it
love the keyboard in this song
What a great lyrical trail. Beautiful song, beautifully done.
BEST. SONG. EVER.
every time i watch them, they are even more fantastic
i love this song so much, i am learnign to play it on guitar and i love just siting in my room and playing it when im down.
Did you ever learn it?

That sounds awesome, I'm glad you had a great time and am pretty jealous as I'm just now getting into this band
This song is amazing and this is an excellent performance 😀
I want to know how Chris gets that overdrive sound. That is so quintessential DCFC and I love it so much.
Heya, I wanna say he used a Full Drive 2 for this album, the blue non-MOSFET version. But lemme know if I'm mistaken!
I'm very late but two tubescreamers turned on at the same time and a fender amp will get it spot on
"...it's like it wasn't really there at all...."
wow, i may have to say that this was better than the album version. great stuff
Im in love with this song
Wow how could you not love them
this was amazing, just awesome
Dcfc is simply amazing. Nothing can ever replace them
Without Chris they are still awesome, but man it doesn’t beat this. Saw them in San Diego in 05, and my jaw drop that’s how good they were.
They lost a little something without Walla.
Asphalt Meadows is a real return to form, best since Narrow Stairs imo. But Walla's influence is definitely missed.

LOVE THIS SONG!
Wow, they're pretty incredible live!
i love this songg!
woah, i really didn't know that mcenroe had a tv show.
great song.
his voice brings me to a happy place:D
16 years ago. Omg
OMG this is CLASSIC , so VINTAGE!
he's voice puts me in a happy place:D
such a great song!
Yeah it is
I randomly downloaded this video a couple of years ago. I'm glad I did.

@@zentazym1lol um death cab was regularly playing on alternative radio before OP wrote his comment
John McEnroe loves Death Cab for Cutie
He is the golden God of music!
He is good
AMAZING.
really awesome song
17 years later is it still a really awesome song????
It helps him stay in time, some people tap their feet while he swings like that.
Plain fucking brilliant.
lol i like how he does the little drum kit thingy evan though theres a drummer in the back lol
correct - bear in mind this is an older clip - they use G&L heaps now, but this is definately thinline fender
Collide!!! I fukin luv it.
this video will be 10 years old soon
+unknown kid welp
welp
Hi I'm from the future, it's now almost 14 :0
This video will be 15 years old soon
the first time i herd that song was yesterday but i have to say that it was better than the album version.
First time you heard that song was 16 years ago yesterday
Qué rechimba!!!
wow.awesome version.
Welcome to time travel
Transatlanticism was their best album in my opinion.
aww they were young! :D
это. трек просто невероятной красоты
OMG I NEVER REALISED THAT!
Hey guys, someone know the name of the bass effect? I want to use in some songs..
Thank You!
XDDD I LOVE THIS BAND .
Why are there so many negatives on this comment? It's so true.
I'm sure he's nervous cause he's drumming when he doesn't on the album.

DCFC are both musical and lyrical geniuses!
they are the best XD
Ben Gibbard is a awesome singer XD
I often like scaled back versions of songs, this electric version nos more scaled back and warm than the official single release.
the low bass adds sooo much to this song
It does
Nerdular Nerdance!
awesome awesome video
It really is

ben gibbard.... you're my hero
Cheers jr :)
says on their website, theres a little clip of the recording too
wow realy shows what you know
BEN GIBBARD WAS SO ADORABLE AND I FORGOT THAT WAS WHY I ORIGINALLY LIKED THIS BAND I THINK LMFAO
this isn't a thinline, unless theres a type of thinline without F-holes?
Anyone know what kind of Tele Ben is playing?
you just did!
i like

Idk if I can find it
Ben Gibbard looks like he could be a mix of Michael Moore and Colin Meloy from the Decemberists.
Anyone know what amp Chris is using for this?
I want his clean sound so much ...
Did you ever find out?
@ScaredPiglet
Hm, I don't become depressed listening to this, although the lyrics do seem sad. It makes me happy listening to music this good, but that's just me.
its a thinline, the holes are just tough to see... its a 72 thinline i think.. probably made in Japan..

far better than the album version
@RaacheI except for The postal service, but there same people so it doesnt matter :)
Ben is one voice I actually think sounds better live :)
wow
Wow
Chris Walla is my religion
Gurl same. He is also my eternal crush. I feel sad because I know likelihood of a guy like that in my life is very remote now.
This video is only a two years younger than I am.
Fuck, Chris Walla needs to come back.
Drummers gotta be like, look ben i can handle the slapping two pads thing, you concentrate on guitar/vox/general quirkiness that gets us all paid.
Looks like a Tele Thinline.
@mikeybabies
even if hes not playing it he may just not wna put it down becasue he would need it for the next song
i think it's a tele custom?
