      This was a web-only performance, which Jimmy typically reserved for more obscure tracks. For the performance that actually played on NBC, they did "You Are a Tourist" which was indeed the current single at the time.

    Left uninspired by the crust of railroad earth;
    It touched the land to the pages of your manuscript.
    I took my thumb off the concrete and saved up my strength
    To hammer pillars for a picket fence.
    It wasn't quite what it seemed,
    A lack of pleasantries.
    My able body isn't what it used to be.
    I must admit I was charmed by your advances,
    Your advantage left me helplessly into you.
    Talking how the group had begun to splinter,
    And I can taste your lipstick on the filter.
    I tried my best to keep my distance from your dress,
    But call-response overturns convictions every time.
    My memory cannot recall (a wave of alcohol),
    We shared a cigarette and shaved the hours off.
    Talking how the group had begun to splinter,
    And I can taste your lipstick on the filter.
    Lushing with the hallway congregation,
    My best judgment signed its resignation.
    I rushed this.
    We moved too fast,
    Trips into the guest room.
    I rushed this.
    We moved too fast,
    Trips into the guest room

    Yeah, if you listen to the original version of this song its pretty low fi until the its kicks in at the second verse. They were just making this performance true to the album version because that quality switch gives a great dynamic to the song.

    One of their best songs from one of their best albums. I love death cab and have for many years, I'm glad they still play older stuff because to me its so much better than the last two albums.... I'm not trying to be elitist I just have that syndrome where the older stuff was so good that you can't get into newer stuff that easily.

  • @gmosaza

    The drum machine was likely added to the first half of the song to achieve that Lo-Fi quality from the album version, but I think it was probably most noticeable live. On UA-cam I can't really notice it, but I still figure that's the reason for the drum machine.
    Also, Title Track on Fallon?? GENIUS.

      I'm guessing it's a drum machine. On the album the first half of the song has a really LO-FI drum sound with heavy effects, and then the actual drums kick in after the first chorus. So when they do it live they probably just use pre-recorded drums for the first part

    • @NoPr0bl3ms
      @NoPr0bl3ms 6 років тому

      Going back and watching it a second time, they all turn to Jason at the beginning while he fiddles with something, which is probably him triggering the pre-recorded drums
