I've been listening to both versions of this song (excluding the demo) for the past 20 years and I still cannot decide which one I like more. I think it depends on whether I'm feeling mainstream Death Cab (album version) or the original grungy Death Cab (alternate version).

This song is real. I took some pictures with my now ex girlfriend and friends on a disposable camera and put the pictures in my glove box of my car. I sold my car and had to clear everything out and I stumbled upon pictures of happier times. This song is nuts

Same here, wonder why they didn't include it. I guess this is a studio take and not technically a "demo". I will say that this version would not have fit in to the flow of the album as well, but I like it better as a standalone song.

    • @bradjawnsin

It’s a completely different song. So rare that a band can remake a song this way without destroying it but, “Dammit Benny, you did it!”
I can’t remember when but, the first time I heard this, I peed my pants a little bit after hearing the, “ Lying awake at night,” piano solo.
The first time I really noticed, and started to really like this song was watching Laguna Beach (lol) with my ex.

love to hear the alternate version, but the album version is much better. it is my favorite track on transatlanticism. the instrumentation being quieter puts more of an emphasis of ben's vocals which are really the highlight of the track. the subdued guitar track also hits the spot.

    • @adamwright5423
      @adamwright5423 7 місяців тому

Disagree as someone who's casually heard the album version a few times but has played the hell out of this track. The more uptempo instrumentation contrasting with the lyrics hit that feeling of acceptance that still hurts, that midpoint in getting over a relationship that songs don't often explore. No blame, but still disappointment and regret. The transitions kill in this one too.
If the OG version was one of my top tracks I'd 100% be with you and wouldn't like this more. Just throwing out another side.

I’ll meet you halfway. I like this version more, even though I don’t think it’s better. The thing that sucks about this version is that it’s mixed by a 5 year old. If they put 10 cents into producing it better, I think it would lift it above the album version.

Thank you so much for sharing this!! The way they do the choruses is amazing, though I think the Transatlanticism version has the edge on the verses by going to the maj7 chord on the turnarounds as opposed to the minor thing they do in this version. I might like this version more though....

I know all about this song, the ins and out from start to finish. It really makes me feel like an expert when anyone mentions it because I, if I may call myself an expert. The facts about the writing and the musical notes I can list off from memory. People are always amazed with my musical knowledge but my secret is and why I can call myself an expert is THIS is the only song I know everything about, I can list each writer, sound guy, and musician. I'll never forget the first time this song played over the radio, time and the earth stood still, it's lodged in my memory like a splinter. I probably think about that moment more often then I should haha. I think it was the moment my sense of self started to form. Hence my obsession with this particular track, and whata track it is. Anyways if anyone has any questions as to the creative process behind this masterpiece just ask I'm always more than happy to talk about my favorite song.

I'm amazed and also amused by your beautifully written and conveyed message. I, aswell, can relate to what it feels to be utterly captivated by a song. I can't come up with a greater feeling than listening a song, everyday, each time getting more into it. If only everything came up as easy as our favourite song is to us...
Please, could you tell me how is that this song came to be? And where they recorded it? The acoustic guitar, which model is it, how does it achieve such full sound?
Thanks, for both your delightful comment, and potential answer.

The glove compartment is inaccurately named
    And everybody knows it
So I'm proposing a swift orderly change
'Cause behind its door, there's nothing to keep my fingers warm
And all I find are souvenirs from better times
Before the gleam of your taillights fading east
To find yourself a better life
I was searching for some legal document
As the rain beat down on the hood
When I stumbled upon pictures I tried to forget
And that's how this idea was drilled into my head
'Cause it's too important to stay the way it's been
There's no blame for how our love did slowly fade
And now that it's gone, it's like it wasn't there at all
And here I rest where disappointment and regret collide
    Lying awake at night
There's no blame for how our love did slowly fade
And now that it's gone, it's like it wasn't there at all
And here I rest where disappointment and regret collide
Lying awake at night, up all night

Wow, it's the first time I'm hearing this version! It's great, but to me it's a bit too indie generic, all cliché execution. Nothing really sets it apart from other similar bands. The final album version, however, is much more interesting, more subtle, more intimate. I definitely prefer that, but I'm glad I had a chance to see where is came from.
