I was watching something on PBS and fell asleep. I was slowly awakened to the building intro to this song and the strong bass driving it. I regained consciousness with a huge smile and my head nodding in time to the beat. Such an awesome tune!! I had never heard of these guys before. Thankful for my "awakening"!!
Welcome to the party. You've discovered a great, great band. If you haven't checked them out already, I'd recommend starting with the albums We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes, Transatlanticism, Plans, and Something About Airplanes. The album this song is on is Narrow Stairs, which is pretty good too but I wouldn't say it's essential listening outside of a few tracks.
This song is one of those I'll never forget the first time i heard it...I was sitting on my roof putting up Christmas Lights on my 2 story house...headphones in... on pandora probably...and this song comes bleeding in...and from the first loop i sat there as it took over me...i was instantly possessed. The lights had to wait 8 minutes and 25 seconds.
That look between Jason McGerr on the drums and Ben Gibbard at 3:51 saying "this is the last round of intro before you start singing". Beautiful communication
OMGAWD. What a workout for the bass player! What a boss. He drives for the entire ride. And is also a master class by thee best drummer. You can hear more of his finesse on the studio/video version and if you pay attention to just his drums the detail is incredible and perfect and experienced. This is a signature performance by all and so well done by all. including the videography - obviously done by somebody who loved the challenge. This song is an artful and beautifully orchestrated peek into madness. Back to listening to it again and again.
He’s an excellent bass player. He can do quite complex basslines as well, maybe not super technical or arpeggiated etc but definitely more than just a handful of notes (Summer Skin for example). He can also keep it real simple and rhythmic (This and You Are A Tourist are good examples of that)
It’s definitely not super complex but it’s the duration and I’m guessing 1/20th of a second he has to hit every hit. Unlike rock where it doesn’t matter as much
That bassline has that Deep Purple feel ... and that my dears is ...fine. The gentleman at the drums is reading every possible reply to that bass. Genuinely brilliant writing and performance.
What can I say? But a masterpiece to my ears! First time I heard this song it was a cold cloudy dreary day, winter here in NEW YORK in the ghetto perfect setting!
Singer looks like a clone of a young John Fogerty. Nice bass n drum groove on this song. Lays down a great foundation. Keys and guitar just float gently above it. So nice when the bass player and drummer work in lock step. SO few bands understand this
Chris Walla is sorely missed they do not sound the same at all without him now he is a very underrated guitar player and was crucial to thier sound his eclectic and methodic keyboard playing also was a main songwriter and produced all of thier albums except Kintsugi which was his last album.
I wouldn’t go that far. It is good and catchy but not even their best bassline. Cath, Why You’d Want To Live Here and Summer Skin have better basslines. Summer Skin’s bassline is way catchier
When this was first released there was a major backlash from fans of Death Cab and critics alike. It was viewed as a self-indulgent, aimless crawl from Gibbard. I knew then and I know now this track is something special. I think back then two things were at hand that impacted perception. 1. This song requires a lot of patience to enjoy fully. 2. This was a strong left turn from the band. What a fucking song, though. Not sure if this is the best Death Cab song but it certainly contains the most tension.
How I wish you could see the potential The potential of you and me It's like a book elegantly bound But in a language that you can't read just yet You gotta spend some time, love You gotta spend some time with me And I know that you'll find love I will possess your heart You gotta spend some time, love You gotta spend some time with me And I know that you'll find love I will possess your heart There are days when outside your window I see my reflection as I slowly pass And I long for this mirrored perspective When we'll be lovers, lovers at last You gotta spend some time, love You gotta spend some time with me And I know that you'll find love I will possess your heart You gotta spend some time, love You gotta spend some time with me And I know that you'll find love I will possess your heart I will possess your heart I will possess your heart You reject my advances and desperate pleas I won't let you let me down so easily So easily You gotta spend some time, love You gotta spend some time with me And I know that you'll find love I will possess your heart You gotta spend some time, love You gotta spend some time with me And I know that you'll find love I will possess your heart You gotta spend some time, love You gotta spend some time with me And I know that you'll find love I will possess your heart I will possess your heart I will possess your heart
This song kinda feels like the band listened to some 2000s Porcupine Tree and thought "so THIS is how we take ourselves to the next level". I love the atmosphere and flow of this song, and it's all sold by one of the hookiest basslines and an equally catchy chorus, even if the lyrics are pretty sick when you read into it
Open up, lean back and create space, then love has an opportunity to come in. If you pursue someone when they say no, you (figuratively) choke the life out of what could have been. I did it once years ago-the only time I was ever in love (and will never see that person again). I think this is why I find this song so damned disturbing!
I bought a bass guitar last month just to learn how to play this song. I’d never so much as held another instrument in my life - except a vibraslap I also own. Imagine my surprise when I learned that this song has a “hammer on” and a “pull off”, neither of which I’d ever heard of or knew existed. Ok, I knew hammer ons existed because of EVH.
THAT just restored my faith, sir. May your tale roll on as bass lover. I am in fact also EVH ... which is funny to me. Hammer ons have been part of technique since the Arab lute days.
Back in March this boy I had been crushing on since we had met (4-5 years ago) invited me to his bands and another band’s basement gig and the opening song was I Will Possess Your Heart and ever since then it’s been the song that reminds me of him
One of the best intros ever.. This song has always just hit me, and evokes emotions right away,an amazing song in its entirety.
It’s simply one of the best songs this 66 year old guy has ever heard
A great band! Glad you liked them -- from a 37 year old
I was watching something on PBS and fell asleep. I was slowly awakened to the building intro to this song and the strong bass driving it. 😂
That is sooooo crazy! I was having trouble falling asleep one night and turned the tv on about 4:00 a.m. and discovered this song the exact same way!!
Amen!!

This complete version is so much better than the destroyed version that’s on the radio.
Its good to see John Fogerty is still rockin'.
Underrated comment 😂
Lol. But JF is doing fine
In retrospect, this is quite possibly their greatest song.
Transatlantisism and this..
Okay.. hmm..
Brothers on a Hotel Bed and this.
Agree. That bass line.
Great song but for me Cath is #1
Nah Title and Registration and this.
One of the best arranged songs ever. I especcially love the baseline
100 percent. Amazing arrangement!
Totally agree
bassline
Yesss
Great, because you get a lot of it!
My favorite Stalker song!
Have you heard Chloroform by Flickerstick?
Proof again that Dŕums and Bass are the backbone of great bands
The radio stations need to play this whole song from the very second to the end.❤❤❤
This song is one of those I'll never forget the first time i heard it...I was sitting on my roof putting up Christmas Lights on my 2 story house...headphones in... on pandora probably...and this song comes bleeding in...and from the first loop i sat there as it took over me...i was instantly possessed. That look between Jason McGerr on the drums and Ben Gibbard at 3:51 saying "this is the last round of intro before you start singing". Beautiful communication
i love the way musicians communicate on stage, the best musicians know how to communicate with just looks and nods
And looooots of practice 👏🏼
"Cmon, pal your moment is over.."

Also, Nick Harmer is beautiful.

I really miss Chris Walla. I hope one day, he returns, even for just one more album, one more tour
Simply put as a old “Rocker,” I absolutely love this band and this song! Fantastic!
That bassline has that Deep Purple feel ... and that my dears is ...fine. The gentleman at the drums is reading every possible reply to that bass. Genuinely brilliant writing and performance.
Incredible intro...
The build up is epic.
I dont know another song by them and dont need to
This must be their best work.
The way this song gradually builds embodies the emotional pulse which drives the pursuit of someone you desire. Brilliant.
I CAN'T STOP LISTENING TO THIS SONG.... it speaks to me on such deep levels y'all don't know
.. much love and gratitude 🙏❤
I will be forever in awe of the bassist for keeping the same bass line so consistently for so long.
One of my favorite Death Cab For Cutie songs! It reminds me of some one special! This live version is spectacular!
Just saw it live. Just fricken awesome. Underrated band. Ben is amazing!
The radio edit of this song is appalling blasphemy. This song always needs to be played in its full glory with that 4 and a half minute opening.
i fully support this statement
True !!
The opening is everything. Quite possible the greatest never heard song ever
the intro is what people think when they think I will possess your heart
they're just looping all of the different parts live; it's not really an intro
The best bass line of the last 20 years, I'd say.
Opening line is quite possibly the most beautiful lyric in all of music.
Love how there is just plain great musical essence before the singing starts. That's just genius.👍
Saw them do this live, Harley Davidson stage, Summer Fest in Milwaukee. Never will forget it .
These guys are prophets of the Lord . Ohh how the spirit pours out of them and others like them.
What can I say? But a masterpiece to my ears! First time I heard this song it was a cold cloudy dreary day, winter here in NEW YORK in the ghetto perfect setting!
I appreciate it when artists make music that is brave enough to bore the lower attention span folks, which there are always plenty of.
I never appreciated the long version of this song until I saw it performed live... Amazing intro!!
Terri 孝枝 This... saw them last night in Portland, oR and this was ridiculously awesome live... and they just sound great live.
Same. I was a fan of the radio edit recording forever until I saw them open with this song a couple years ago.
I’m in love with Chris Walla after watching this. ☺️
Death Cab were always at their best with Chris
Saw this live at Sumerfest in Milwaukee and it was Damn Awsome.
Epic and unique song. Pretty sure this is the one that really hooked me into Death Cab.
I saw them one night around this time and Chris was just in a bloody zone bent on shredding his part in this song. It was brilliant to see and hear.
My absolutely favorite band
This song, is a masterpiece!!!
Excellent song and performance. Thx to my kids for turning me on to these guys and other great bands.
I'm usually not a live guy but this is awesome stuff. These guys have it together. They are tight even when jamming. Well done good sirs.
Singer looks like a clone of a young John Fogerty. Nice bass n drum groove on this song. Lays down a great foundation. Keys and guitar just float gently above it. So nice when the bass player and drummer work in lock step. SO few bands understand this

Absolutely beautiful. This is insanely epic. The absolute passion for art in music......wow.
Catchiest baseline of all time.
Zach Lucas The Cure's Fascination Street would like to have a word with you.
Look into the bassline of blur's Jets. Man, I love it!
I think it’s one of the best intros of all time. A driving rhythmically undulating orgasm of sound
it is, but also The Stone Roses - I Wanna Be Adored & The Verve - Slide Away
I wouldn’t go that far. It is good and catchy but not even their best bassline. Cath, Why You’d Want To Live Here and Summer Skin have better basslines. Summer Skin’s bassline is way catchier
Death Cab for Cutie is one in a million Definitely one of there Best Songs this is most definitely some of their Best work!!!
This is my favorite version of this song specifically this live preformance
Can a performance be dead?
Suspenseful and a breath of pure oxygen. Thought the keyboard was very Joe Jackson. You will possess my playlists.
so very addictively intoxicating... THANK YOU!!!

"If Ben touches that microphone ONE MORE DAMN TIME!" I said to myself when he sang the intro
Maybe it's not locking into position properly so he has to keep it just adjusting it.
Does it get any better. What a band. Carry on!!
The performance and the clothes remind me of joy division.
All about that tom work ending with the snare flam. F'in sweet
How I wish you could see the potential
The potential of you and me
It's like a book elegantly bound
But in a language that you can't read just yet
You gotta spend some time, love
You gotta spend some time with me
And I know that you'll find love
I will possess your heart
You gotta spend some time, love
You gotta spend some time with me
And I know that you'll find love
I will possess your heart
There are days when outside your window
I see my reflection as I slowly pass
And I long for this mirrored perspective
When we'll be lovers, lovers at last
You gotta spend some time, love
You gotta spend some time with me
And I know that you'll find love
I will possess your heart
You gotta spend some time, love
You gotta spend some time with me
And I know that you'll find love
I will possess your heart
I will possess your heart
I will possess your heart
You reject my advances and desperate pleas
I won't let you let me down so easily
So easily
You gotta spend some time, love
You gotta spend some time with me
And I know that you'll find love
I will possess your heart
You gotta spend some time, love
You gotta spend some time with me
And I know that you'll find love
I will possess your heart
You gotta spend some time, love
You gotta spend some time with me
And I know that you'll find love
I will possess your heart
I will possess your heart
I will possess your heart
2024, tiempo para recordar esta maravilla.
Oh God I just love Ben's laugh at the end.... Nice.... and this song is just amazing! my absolute fav at the moment it's perfect!
Exactly!!! it's good to not take yourself too seriously 😆
Death cab for cutie is still getting it done in the year 2022 with new music❤❤❤
No Chris, no Death Cab. New stuff is meh at best, it needs Chris inputs and brilliance
I love the intro to this song! Gets me everytime
This song kinda feels like the band listened to some 2000s Porcupine Tree and thought "so THIS is how we take ourselves to the next level". I love the atmosphere and flow of this song, and it's all sold by one of the hookiest basslines and an equally catchy chorus, even if the lyrics are pretty sick when you read into it
He's got a right to express whatever insights he finds in life. Free your mind.
The intro goes to show how underrated Walla, McGerr, and Harmer are
Also Ben Gibbard is such a great pianist, I don’t see people ever talk about this
See you guys in SC in a few weeks. Gonna be a magic night.
Should be 50 million + views!!!
That keyboard 🎹 player just different bro 🔥🔥🚒
Ben seems the think that the microphone is never in a good position.
So funny man! I thought the same thing!!!
it's like watching Zizek grab his nose
Just heard this yesterday for the first time. Awesome Jam.
Love that bass line!
Such an entrancing song. I suppose given the lyrics, that's the theme/point.
This song has such a The Doors-feeling to it!
way beyond what the doors ever produced
You mean if the doors didn’t suck, had a real lead singer, a drummer that stayed in time, and the band had any talent?
Open up, lean back and create space, then love has an opportunity to come in. If you pursue someone when they say no, you (figuratively) choke the life out of what could have been. I did it once years ago-the only time I was ever in love (and will never see that person again). I think this is why I find this song so damned disturbing!

This what driving, relentless, pleading, irrational, painful, terrifying obsession sounds like.
En soul meet body en vivo, el bajista despliega todo su arsenal, un máster
Dammnnn they sound this good live??? Jeeze. Not to many bands can pull that off.
This is one of the only DCFC songs I fully dig, and it's one of my all time favorite songs. Weird.
***** It's also a good song
Death Cab for Cutie I will possess your heart love Definitely one of there Best songs of all time!!!
@@7martin747 no definitely not, maybe in the last several decades of meaningless garbage tho
That bridge is exceptional
this song band is such a well oiled machine this song is amazing
The lovely part is the Humanity of their everything ... so not mechanical.
Thank you!
Delishuz
breathtaking .... one of my favorite songs ever
I love Bens face at the end when he realizes Chris detuned his guitar on purpose haha
Those sideburns tho...
Reminds me of Neil Young...looks and dark lyrics
So we'll done... WOW!
You gotta love the sideburns
The slow build up to the lyrics is mesmerizing
It's very mellow ... unless you pay attention to the lyrics and what the song is actually about.
Every breath you Take.
@@j.kevvideoproductions.6463 Exactly.. both songs have dark lyrics wrapped up in a smooth, creamy, chocolatey melody
Masterpiece. Passionate
So pure.
His voice would be perfect for a Pet Shop Boys cover.
Back in March this boy I had been crushing on since we had met (4-5 years ago) invited me to his bands and another band’s basement gig and the opening song was I Will Possess Your Heart and ever since then it’s been the song that reminds me of him

whoever made that microphone at the piano so short was a menace
Such a great band all the way around!
Great musicianship
Absolutely love this song
New fan I just ran across them but this song is DOPE
Great song!!
Dude played hell of a good song!
So good!!!
a good song to calm down to..their newer stuff is getting better :).
SO SICK!
love that bass line!!!
as soon as everyone heard that bass line...yep.. cheers and huzzahs are mandatory
Beautiful
