Since I started eating vegan in February, there is nothing I’ve craved more than a Gyro. It was my favorite indulgent meal. Living in Chicago, you can pick up an excellent one in just about every party of the city. That’s my vote for next one with this prep method.
Just want to say, mate, you are so good at UA-cam. Telling us you have backup nooch knowing very well we’d be in the comments making remarks, explaining in another vid that the water is colored from oil and isn’t dirty water… you just GET it. We love your content. I’ve tried this recipe, the frozen burrito recipe, and your BigMac sauce. You’re killing it. Keep up the amazing work; your content is top notch.
I'm all about using tofu for just about any application. I'm pretty much convinced you can make just about anything from tofu, mushrooms or soycurls. Plus they're widely available to most people which makes these recipes very accessible and cheap.
What’s really yummy about this is the nutritional profile of tofu versus beef. Similar calories (1 cup of firm tofu versus 5 oz steak) and you’ve got similar protein and iron. But for the bad stuff you’ve got ZERO cholesterol in the tofu versus 130+ mgs in the beef. For the good stuff like fiber and calcium the tofu blows beef away. Delicious nutrition. Keep it up Mr Burger Dude. 🥳
good translation!! the most important part of a philly cheesesteak in my eyes is the simplicity of it, simple cheese and beef tossed in onions, no bs. Nice way to still empart flavor upon everything while still being true to the experience
This technique is amazing. The possibilities are endless. You could even make it lean more like chicken opposed to beef. I’m Guna try this asap. I already know it’s perfect
Dude I just made these but Jersey Mike's style with grilled onions, peppers, and provolone and it was amazing. Super easy too. Can't wait to do more with this like roast beef sandwiches, a mongolian stirfry, and maybe a beef stroganoff!
yesss the stir fry possibilities with this preparation style... omg. I'm trying these tomorrow night with peperoncinis and now ima add grilled onions 🤩 hell yeah
My Sicilian buddy came up with a killer Chicago style mushroom sub many years back that this recipe reminded me of, once you get into some big grilled king oyster mushrooms with a fork the texture barely even feels like Mushroom, cook it in a sour acidic marmite broth with some dry shiitakes all re-hydrated up with broth, add a thickener to get the perfect mouth feel, he used Carrageenan but I use Agar the way I learned from Asian chefs learning to make soup.
Great video!!! SauceStache's recipes have yet to disappoint; made this one before and it's KILLER! I usually add sliced, sauteed mushrooms as well to give the mix more body and meatiness...not sure I'd do that for EVERY application, but in a sandwich like this it works perfectly!
This is the second time trying your recipe and it is a big success I just made the tofu and it’s taste amazing ..thank you for sharing your delicious recipes
Can't believe this came out 2 years ago! Been such an amazing hack for my tofu making. I buy at least 6 super firm tofu's at a time from trader joe's and love making a double batch of this stuff. So good. Side note, where have you been?!?! Missing your style of videos, hope all is well.
Your presentation make this look so easy! Your channel has so much to offer. I make cooking videos too and I’m always happy to learn from other talented creators like you! I look forward to new videos. Much success to you in the new year! 👍🏻
I had this for lunch and it was so good. I'm trying to adjust it to pastrami, I'm thinking sauerkraut juice, vinegar, caraway, coriander, bay, peppercorns, cloves, and allspice as the cooking liquid in the pan to rehydrate after baking. I feel like I could tweak the marinade as well, but I don't know where to start. If I have a success story, I'll be sure to share.
Looks great! Made it before, bet yours tastes better! Daiya cheeze sauce works in a pinch too, and costs a bit less than most cheeze slices....just needs mushrooms, bell pepper, more onions, and lots of sauteed jalapenos to top it off! Wish my local J. Michael's Philly Deli made something half as good as this! Another kick ass video, Burger Man!
Just yesterday I was thinking how I was ready for your next upload Now you upload this right before I'm headed to the shops I may very well have to make this Great Video Dude!
Holy crap that was fantastic! I cannot get the not beef but I already had an opened onion jar on hand Not all my pieces cooked in the oven evenly some came out almost like Jerky but once rehydrated that didnt matter I didnt make the cheese sauce the same as you because I forgot Cashews but it was still great will super thin grilled onion and green bell peppers I also ended up going with a plain role because I couldn't find that kind you were talking about I've never had a real cheesesteak before so I dont have any reference but it was great
I finally had time to make it today after marinating the tofu for 48hrs lol (crazy 48hrs) my fiancée loved it and I liked it too. Super happy about this! One of the vegan friendly burger places in our town stopped making and selling their Philly tease steak and that was my go to. Now I can make it.
I've used the 86eats gyro seitan before. It was no joke the absolute best replacement I've ever had, hands down. I had several meat eating people tell me it tasted like the real thing. I made sure to add oregano and cumin to the seitan and the simmering broth because she doesn't include it in her recipes but it's the traditional flavors that go into gyro meat.
I know you like trying new things so I thought I would mention using Sour Starch (Polvilho Azedo) and\or Sweet Starch ( Polvilho Doce) (not actually sweet in flavor) for cheese making. Yoki is one of the brands that you can get on Amazon (that is the brand that I have seen used). Sweet Starch will give structure while Sour Starch will give it that tangy zing and also the pull effect. I haven't seen, myself, anyone use it with store bought cheese (don't see why it wouldn't work with it though) just homemade cheeses and cheese sauces. Just thought I should mention that I learned about these from Chef Jana here on UA-cam.
I bought some of this in an international market and I have to agree, I also learned about this from Chef Jana and it's been a game changer in my vegan cheeses
I genuinely lol'ed when you said "that sandwich [with cheese already on the bottom] looks pretty good; but, you know what? Why not drizzle some cheese on that one as well?" I tried the Sauce Stach version when it came out, and it's super good. I'll have to try your version as well, it looks amazing!
Nice video as always! I recently posted a short on how to make a vegan Mr. Beast burger and made a burger out of Trader Joe’s new vegan ground Turkey. I’d like to see how you would do it if you get the chance.
Made this today and dried the tofu until it was crispy (so probably a bit too long). Rehydrated really well though and the crisp tofu chips were absolutely delicious as well!
We do have places in Philly that does both regular cheese and cheese sauce. Actually I’m not sure if we have any vegan spots that do that but regular cheesesteak spots does Now I have to research that.
I wanted to try sauce stache's version but never got around to it. This makes it a little simpler though and I think I'm going to try it out if I find super firm tofu! I can't seem to find amorosa rolls anywhere unfortunately though..
Good luck! Like I said, amorosos are nice, but not totally necessary. If you got a soft french roll, I would suggest maybe toasting the inside of the bread to make it sturdier. The amorosos are kinda like a chewier soft french bread.
Burger dude, have you tried the cashew powder from PB2 as a cheese sauce shortcut? It's a little pricey but I tried the recipe from "Healthy Vegan Mama" and it was really good! Could be a great base to play around with.
@@TheeBurgerDude Of course! She uses the cashew powder and instant potato flake which is a genius take on the potato cheese. I tried it and loved it! Hope you enjoy it :D
Even tho there's no vegan ingredients where i live at all, nor vegan alternatives that aren't raw vegetables or fruit, I still love this recipe and might try it someday! As vegan as I can get it of course
What kind is bread of sandwich for example at Wal-Mart Store of Breads section that is some without add eggs, flour or etc just only vegan sandwich buns ?
Do you have any recommendations for how you would make this faux meat as a chicken substitute? What liquid smoke, if any, would be best? Still use soy sauce? Obvi go for chikn broth over beef. I’ve been racking my brain how to make this work bc I made the beef and it was outstanding. I’m going to do a bacon version. Chicken has me a little stumped
I think I might like the tofu slightly better, but I'd like to try the soy curls again, but try to coat them in either a fatty marinade or fry them in a bit of oil to get them to get some sear to 'em. They are softer than the tofu, especially the one I did at the end where I grilled it with the cheese slices. That was my favorite by far (though the double cheese might've had something to do with that too lol)
I like using super firm tofu but don't know much to do with it because i feel like i can never get flavor to penetrate it. Love the ideas keep em rollin.
hope you don’t mind the long comment but man I am just interested in these type of meals. Cooking is a passion of mine and I consider it an art. And with vegan meals, just using a substitute to get that same satisfaction is just very interesting (in a great way). Like, being able to think about how you’ll flavor the tofu and then actually make it into a satisfactory vegan meal looks awesome. Definitely want to try
My boyfriend is Vegan, I'm not. But I was a Vegetarian for 3 years so I want to add some Vegan meals into my diet and eventually go all Vegan. Cheese steaks are my guilty pleasure, so I am absolutely going to try this!
As a french guy, when I saw the bread I was like : ''Oh my....eeeew ! That's not bread, it is brioche !" Tofu seems delicious though, I should try it !

Yes! I’ll second that! Love gyros!
We're here for a good time, not a long time (preferably without exploiting animals) #veganjunkfoodalltheway
I thought I blocked them 😂
Yes gyros that are heavy on the garlic and served with mint sauce would be epic.
If only they knew

After watching Sauce's video I have been making my own variation with super firm tofu. I was so surprised how great it was! Such a great technique.
Seriously, using tofu like this has opened up so many doors for other dishes, can't wait to experiment!

Watching your Videos always make me Hungry! 😡 I want to have some! Also wonderful video! Hopefully I'll be able to make some myself soon
I make bac'un this way: thin tofu slices, soaked in allegro seasoning with liquid smoke, fry. Then make a blt with it. Yum!
love it that you let the not so glamorous cheese dripping shot and explaining that you wanted to do it again :) Looks delicious man
Much respect for the Amoroso's plug. We swear by that bread here in Philly. Looks amazing bro.
As a PA boy, I approve. 👍
I also use that exact tofu for some pretty bomb and super quick fried “egg” sandwiches.
I've been making my tofu like this for a while now. A cheap mandolin slicer makes my life so much easier when I need consistent thin slices quickly.
I'm from Chicago and would love to see you do a vegan Italian beef dip sandwich 😊
This is the second time trying your recipe and it is a big success I just made the tofu and it’s taste amazing ..thank you for sharing your delicious recipes

I made this, but I also added home made white barbecue sauce. Trust me it’s to die for!

You need to play the cheese sauce drizzle in slo mo. It would look even better! Still looks so yummy.
just a tear of joy flowed in my stomach!
Gyros yes I love them!! My favorite is made with homemade seitan I find that texture is best sliced thin and cooked til almost crispy.
Next level method for the tofu. Will definitely be trying this.

Def would be interested in a gyro recipe! Never been able to figure out the perfect sub for gyro meat and really missing it.

Glad somebody caught that 😏
❤️🤗❤️ from Philly for the Amoroso’s rolls and the “youse” 😂
