    It’s hilarious to see the oven version come out exactly how my parents used to bake their “fried chicken.” I’ll probably do the oven style just for nostalgia

      you should try deep fried at least once just to experience it. just to know what you've been missing out on.

      My mother-in-law used to skin the chicken, then smear mayo all over it, then dip in seasoned breadcrumbs and bake it. It sounds awful, but it was really quite good, before I became plant based of course.

    Your reaction to the shallow fried was golden! Shallow frying is usually my method of choice just to reduce the oil use and mess. That marinade is TOP TIER btw, I was so impressed with the grilled fillets and will definitely be making it regularly!

    The best tofu I’ve had is deep fried thin tofu using Cajun fish fry flour mix. As a non-vegan that does a lot of vegan cooking for my vegan family I couldn’t tell the difference

    One thing that might help your panko air fried tofu is pre-toasting the panko. I do this by mixing a little oil into the panko in a bowl and microwaving it for 5-15 second bursts, stirring between each burst until it is light golden brown. Careful not to go too far with this step though or else it’ll burn in the air fryer.

    Thanks for showing how viable shallow frying can be! It very much reminds me of how my mom used to make chicken cutlets, but veganized, and frankly faster and cheaper. I think I'll be shallow frying some tofu this weekend.

    I add some oil to the wet mixture instead of spraying it on. Air frying will sweat it out and crisp it up.

    Yeah the shallow fry is exactly how moms make Schnitzel in my home country and it's something every kid grows up on.
    They actually still use less oil than you, Americans sure love their oil 😅

    I like tofu when it’s seasoned, really good, shredded, tofu scrambled, etc. but just to eat tofu by itself I’m not a fan of the soy taste, but cooking it this way by making the cutlets first and then deep frying. Looks like something I’m going to love. thank you for the recipe. I’m gonna have to try this.

      Same. I have to not be able to taste the tofu. Derek Sarno did a tofu block with a glaze and I tried that and it was lovely but I think that's as close as I'll get to enjoying a block of unseasoned tofu.

    Such things look so good but I’m always so skeptical because it’s usually so dry, since it uses firm pressed tofu.. these look flavourful and probably not as dry as the ones I’ve had!
    On the side note, there is a favourite fried tofu I like from this chicken rice shop that has a fried silken tofu, and that’s my favourite. It’ll be nice to see that used too… :0

    I'm not vegan myself but I've always had an interest in plant bast food. The main thing I wonder is how much is there a cost difference of? I eat a lot of chicken amd having something with a good amount of protein and fiber while being cheaper than meat would be nice.

    • @ahoee
      @ahoee Місяць тому

      you can definitely be vegan for cheap. tofu is pretty cheap, like 2-3 dollars for a block (where i live), and that has a good amount of protein. fibers also easy and cheap as well, most fruits and veggies will offer lots of that. then with cheaper foods like nuts, seeds, oats, will supply you with lots of protein and fiber.
