Regarding Stop N Swop, I saw Ben Rai's excellent documentary on it a week or so ago and had come to say similar. I like the scope of what Rare wanted with Stop N Swop, and it's a shame hardware limited what they wanted to do.
Pretty sure the part about Stop n Swop 2 items being used in Nuts & Bolts is incorrect. The template vehicles mentioned are unlocked with the original SNS items, and the ones from 2 have no use whatsoever.

It’s uncharacteristic of her to talk about his body shape or weight, though. It’s just a random thing to say that isn’t reflective of any other way she goes about insulting him. When you consider that DK’s portrait was there in Bottles’ place, the barrel boy comment immediately falls into a context that makes way more sense.

What adds to it for me is the fact that there’s paintings and patterns on the wall, implying it was maybe once a safe place where cavemen lived. It feels so much like you really did step back in time to the dinosaur times. The sky makes it feel super out of place since it’s not really visible from terry’s area either.

Obviously we were all really young folks working on something way too big for our britches and we had little knowledge of how to pull off so the whole project fell apart fairly quickly as far as I know. But it was a food memory nonetheless. No idea if the concepts that ended up in the mod were taken from our old thing or just coincidence, but regardless I thank you a lot for giving me a small trip down memory lane!

I think the reason that the music for Bottles' Party doesn't need to be listened to to be unlocked for the jukebox is because most returning players would just go straight to the final boss after beating Tower of Tragedy. I guess the game developers realized that it isn't worth it to win Tower of Tragedy, go to Bottles' house during the party, listen to the music, and then go back to beat the final boss. I think only beginner players or people who like to see all the details of a game would actually go to Bottles house between the quiz and final boss.
I think the best hope for Banjo would be if Retro Studios could get their hands on the rights of it. They were able to make modern DK games that feel like they could've come from Rare. I feel like they could do something with Banjo if all parties wanted to make it happen. But it's probably a long shot.

Finally another post 2021 iceberg video and chart that's actually decent. I have some corrections and further details on stop n swop though. Someone else already said it so I won't bring up that but what they didn't include also is that you were NEVER meant to leave your n64 on, they knew that would damage the hardware. It was always based on the ram left over after turning it off. While before we thought tooie was the only game, it is now known it was meant for other games too as the other commenter said albeit not just from data in dk64 but I'm pretty sure a dev has since confirmed it. Also while stop n swop was removed from all the planned games, it's still in Kazooie fully functional. Skawo has some great videos demonstrating what it would look like to unlock the items through the intended ram message means as opposed to the sandcastle cheat codes; and with the recent decompilation this may be something that becomes much more surfaced and accessible if not something more.

11:30 there is actually a lot more to this than people have been lead to believe. Another UA-camr named Skawo posted a video demonstrating how the function actually would have worked with a Banjo Kazooie cartridge. One of the game devs posted a comment on that video that led to over 200 replies and a pretty in depth conversation among them about the scrapped feature. I've saved all the comments and insights in a rough paste word document that I'm still trying to figure the best way to present it online. But in the mean time, allow me to paraphrase some clarity: Stop n Swop was pulled by Nintendo during the development of DK64. Banjo Kazooie was a completed cartridge by then and everything programmed to run and work as intended. Nothing regarding SnS on Kazooie is scrapped or leftover cut content, the codes are still in game and can be received by the intended methods per Skawo's video demonstration. The items in SnS were NOT all going to BK2, but rather initially intended to have one item for a different Rare game that would be developed after. DK64 was already in the works when Banjo was nearing completion, they knew they wanted their first SnS feature on the game, and the item was to be an Ice Key. When SnS was canned, elements of it had to be pulled from DK64, but other hard programmed bits like camera movements and level layouts/rooms couldn't be so easily removed. This is why you have a random room with an empty pedestal, or a camera that pans into an empty wall. Because the other games SnS would have affected were not even in development, let alone known what they would be, Rare had to make some kind of ambiguous mystery container that could reveal it's contents on the other games when they figured out what they wanted it to be. They went with colorful ? eggs, a kind of cross between a colorful wrapped present and an Easter egg container. The Ice Key is the exception because DK64 was already far enough into development they knew what they wanted that game's item to be. BK2 wasn't anything that had been greenlit at the time BK1 was completed, the 3 SnS eggs and key in that game were more of an inside knowledge/easter egg throw back to BK1, as those items were seen at the end of BK1 if you 100%ed the game. The last 3 eggs of BK1 are just kind of randomly placed in the levels compared to the specialized rooms the other 4 objects had as they were added near the end of the game's development. I personally would speculate this is also why they don't show up in Mumbo's photos at the end of a 100% game finish. And the "Swop" half of SnS was not initially a misspelling, some programmer/developer secretly changed it and they liked it better that way so they kept it.
Forgot one more: the addition of the cheat codes to get the SnS items was also a last minute addition, a kind of "just in case" backup. Well before the days of the internet and being able to hack games for their secrets, it was something the game devs could leak later if they needed to. They made them really long so they'd be difficult for anyone to just randomly find or guess
Great summary. I haven't read that comment thread in a while, but I remembered in Paul Machacek's twitter post he seemed confident in the ice key being the final unlock in BK, after going "full-circle". So perhaps in the other games we were supposed to first bring an egg to each (for example to the captain and say, the fridge), get our rewards, then finally round trip with the super code to unlock the master key, visit each game again which would all have icy locks, and collect our final rewards. The Mega Glowbo sounds like a cool final reward for BT; it's interesting to ponder what it could have been for the other games. The exact mechanics of unlocking the super code is also interesting to think about. Unless I'm mistaken it means the order of the unlocks had to be pre-determined. Otherwise you'd have to round-trip every game just to verify total "score" each time you obtained an egg which of course would be absurd. This despite no such rule existing (except for being potentially being hinted at in the addresses) in the memory checks for BK. So BK technically doesn't care which egg comes first but do expect the other games to come up with a linear order. Perhaps a bit counterintuitive if you had collected the games in the "wrong" order and would have had to wait until you owned say DK to start getting rewards. On the other hand you'd want to get that game pretty badly to unlock the rewards for the others. So it makes sense. You have any theories about that first unknown outgoing payload btw (0x1)?
@pokechamp3987 there was mention of a "full circle" after getting all the eggs, but I honestly think it was just a concept idea. BK was a completed cartridge with SnS intact as intended, there was no master code or ultimate unlock found anywhere in it's coding. It could have been something they might have implemented to another game, but where the mechanic was scrapped so early in, there's really no saying what could have transpired if it was left to play out. BK doesn't care what comes first as far as the codes go, Ice Key was just the first item they knew they wanted for the next game in development which was DK64. The other eggs would have then been assigned to later developed games, which had not even been greenlit at that point, but you can probably guesstimate what those titles would have been from the sequence of Rare games developed after BK1.
I just skimmed through the thread again. Conflicting reports about the key on the surface between these two people. They might still be talking about the same thing, just phrasing it a bit differently (and remembering some parts more than others). Both mention a full-circle collectable with the thread guy clarifying his earlier references to a super code just meant the last of the regular codes in the chain to "confirm the joined-up sequence". Regarding the key he was unsure if it was meant for BT or DK so I still think it very well could have been someone planned the key to be the final item to be obtained in BK, to then be used in all games. Sounds like it was all eggs at first, then someone came up with the last minute idea to make one of them the key.
@pokechamp3987 it was also 20+ years ago, a lot can easily be misremembered, as well as it being such an early concept, there could have easily been changes made later. There's enough evidence through CTR on DK64 to support that ice key was in fact meant for that game to start, however. Could it have been used later for something else? Sure. It's just a code, it could have easily been programmed on another game to do a cool thing.

I just started watching but it was such a throwback to hear the mention of Mandolin from the RWP! I used to frequent those forums as a kid (pre-Nuts and Bolts release), and I still look back on those memories fondly now that I’m in my 30s. I remember they had a pretty great April Fools’ prank one year (which they started as far back as February for believability) involving supposedly finding the unfinished but still usable remnants of Stop N Swop through data mining the game (including new never before seen eggs). It was a ROM hack of course, but they were so dedicated with making it believable! Thanks for the vid!
The Callback motifs in Nuts and Bolts music goes further, being in different areas of Showdown Town plays other level's music in the background, such as being near the Docks by Boggy's Gym will cause the main track of Rusty Bucket Bay to play in the background faintly every now and then.

Great video - if you dont mind me saying, concerning Stop N Swop, I made a 2 hour documentary about it on my channel. It answers every question. And no, the rewards we got are not what were planned originally, because they never planned prizes for BT. We actually have known for awhile now DK was linked to SNS, I am surprised the decompile community were unaware. Subdrag and Runehero discovered links years ago before the decompile.

It is pointy just like the most known shark species. And clanker has that hole on It's back nowadays, so It was a shark since the start, just a shark with a hole on It's head. Maybe they did It like that to test, or to make clanker be more like a normal shark, but that was modified to be a trash triturator as in the released game, but instead of being totally covered in metal, gruntilda just completely modified his inside.

Knowing that Grunty usurped Spiral Mountain, that reminds me that there's a theory that Mumbo is a Jinjo, so I wonder if he was the Royal Magician and he tried to stop Grunty from taking over Spiral Mountain.

It's a conversation between Kazooie and a clogged up Loggy, easily missable if you choose not to talk to him again. Basically Kazooie says "If you want help call a plumber. I think Mario's free at the moment." To which Loggy responds with "I don't think he actually does that sort of thing anymore..." Not saying its gospel but its food for thought. I remember buying Nuts & Bolts, excited to see Banjo years after his classic adventures in HD... only to have weird car building as the main focus and a mechanic that over-powered the whole game. Imagine purchasing the next Super Mario obviously, only for it to be a Mario Paint HD remaster.

56:20 the legs and wings thing is very true. In some Rare Replay bonus video content, original devs of the game talk about giving banjo more advanced moves, and that started with kazooie just being wings and then legs coming out from the backpack
11:30 there is actually a lot more to this than people have been lead to believe. Another UA-camr named Skawo posted a video demonstrating how the function actually would have worked with a Banjo Kazooie cartridge. One of the game devs posted a comment on that video that led to over 200 replies and a pretty in depth conversation among them about the scrapped feature. I've saved all the comments and insights in a rough paste word document that I'm still trying to figure the best way to present it online. But in the mean time, allow me to paraphrase some clarity:
Stop n Swop was pulled by Nintendo during the development of DK64. Banjo Kazooie was a completed cartridge by then and everything programmed to run and work as intended. Nothing regarding SnS on Kazooie is scrapped or leftover cut content, the codes are still in game and can be received by the intended methods per Skawo's video demonstration.
The items in SnS were NOT all going to BK2, but rather initially intended to have one item for a different Rare game that would be developed after. DK64 was already in the works when Banjo was nearing completion, they knew they wanted their first SnS feature on the game, and the item was to be an Ice Key. When SnS was canned, elements of it had to be pulled from DK64, but other hard programmed bits like camera movements and level layouts/rooms couldn't be so easily removed. This is why you have a random room with an empty pedestal, or a camera that pans into an empty wall.
Because the other games SnS would have affected were not even in development, let alone known what they would be, Rare had to make some kind of ambiguous mystery container that could reveal it's contents on the other games when they figured out what they wanted it to be. They went with colorful ? eggs, a kind of cross between a colorful wrapped present and an Easter egg container. The Ice Key is the exception because DK64 was already far enough into development they knew what they wanted that game's item to be.
BK2 wasn't anything that had been greenlit at the time BK1 was completed, the 3 SnS eggs and key in that game were more of an inside knowledge/easter egg throw back to BK1, as those items were seen at the end of BK1 if you 100%ed the game.
The last 3 eggs of BK1 are just kind of randomly placed in the levels compared to the specialized rooms the other 4 objects had as they were added near the end of the game's development. I personally would speculate this is also why they don't show up in Mumbo's photos at the end of a 100% game finish.
And the "Swop" half of SnS was not initially a misspelling, some programmer/developer secretly changed it and they liked it better that way so they kept it.
Forgot one more: the addition of the cheat codes to get the SnS items was also a last minute addition, a kind of "just in case" backup. Well before the days of the internet and being able to hack games for their secrets, it was something the game devs could leak later if they needed to. They made them really long so they'd be difficult for anyone to just randomly find or guess
Great summary. I haven't read that comment thread in a while, but I remembered in Paul Machacek's twitter post he seemed confident in the ice key being the final unlock in BK, after going "full-circle".
So perhaps in the other games we were supposed to first bring an egg to each (for example to the captain and say, the fridge), get our rewards, then finally round trip with the super code to unlock the master key, visit each game again which would all have icy locks, and collect our final rewards. The Mega Glowbo sounds like a cool final reward for BT; it's interesting to ponder what it could have been for the other games.
The exact mechanics of unlocking the super code is also interesting to think about. Unless I'm mistaken it means the order of the unlocks had to be pre-determined. Otherwise you'd have to round-trip every game just to verify total "score" each time you obtained an egg which of course would be absurd. This despite no such rule existing (except for being potentially being hinted at in the addresses) in the memory checks for BK. So BK technically doesn't care which egg comes first but do expect the other games to come up with a linear order. Perhaps a bit counterintuitive if you had collected the games in the "wrong" order and would have had to wait until you owned say DK to start getting rewards. On the other hand you'd want to get that game pretty badly to unlock the rewards for the others. So it makes sense.

@pokechamp3987 there was mention of a "full circle" after getting all the eggs, but I honestly think it was just a concept idea. BK was a completed cartridge with SnS intact as intended, there was no master code or ultimate unlock found anywhere in it's coding. It could have been something they might have implemented to another game, but where the mechanic was scrapped so early in, there's really no saying what could have transpired if it was left to play out.
BK doesn't care what comes first as far as the codes go, Ice Key was just the first item they knew they wanted for the next game in development which was DK64. The other eggs would have then been assigned to later developed games, which had not even been greenlit at that point, but you can probably guesstimate what those titles would have been from the sequence of Rare games developed after BK1.
I just skimmed through the thread again. Conflicting reports about the key on the surface between these two people. They might still be talking about the same thing, just phrasing it a bit differently (and remembering some parts more than others). Both mention a full-circle collectable with the thread guy clarifying his earlier references to a super code just meant the last of the regular codes in the chain to "confirm the joined-up sequence". Regarding the key he was unsure if it was meant for BT or DK so I still think it very well could have been someone planned the key to be the final item to be obtained in BK, to then be used in all games. Sounds like it was all eggs at first, then someone came up with the last minute idea to make one of them the key.
@pokechamp3987 it was also 20+ years ago, a lot can easily be misremembered, as well as it being such an early concept, there could have easily been changes made later. There's enough evidence through CTR on DK64 to support that ice key was in fact meant for that game to start, however. Could it have been used later for something else? Sure. It's just a code, it could have easily been programmed on another game to do a cool thing.

I just started watching but it was such a throwback to hear the mention of Mandolin from the RWP! I used to frequent those forums as a kid (pre-Nuts and Bolts release), and I still look back on those memories fondly now that I’m in my 30s. I remember they had a pretty great April Fools’ prank one year (which they started as far back as February for believability) involving supposedly finding the unfinished but still usable remnants of Stop N Swop through data mining the game (including new never before seen eggs). It was a ROM hack of course, but they were so dedicated with making it believable! Thanks for the vid!

The Callback motifs in Nuts and Bolts music goes further, being in different areas of Showdown Town plays other level's music in the background, such as being near the Docks by Boggy's Gym will cause the main track of Rusty Bucket Bay to play in the background faintly every now and then.

Great video - if you dont mind me saying, concerning Stop N Swop, I made a 2 hour documentary about it on my channel. It answers every question. And no, the rewards we got are not what were planned originally, because they never planned prizes for BT. We actually have known for awhile now DK was linked to SNS, I am surprised the decompile community were unaware. Subdrag and Runehero discovered links years ago before the decompile.

Maybe they did It like that to test, or to make clanker be more like a normal shark, but that was modified to be a trash triturator as in the released game, but instead of being totally covered in metal, gruntilda just completely modified his inside.

I never knew about Jingaling's statue head in Spiral Mountain and I played Grunty's Revenge a fair bit! I think I noticed it but I didn't notice the crown and make the connection. Knowing that Grunty usurped Spiral Mountain, that reminds me that there's a theory that Mumbo is a Jinjo, so I wonder if he was the Royal Magician and he tried to stop Grunty from taking over Spiral Mountain.

5:17 I'm not sure if anyone's mentioned it or if it gets mentioned later in the vid but there was a string of dialogue in Banjo Tooie where Kazooie outright name drops Mario. It's a conversation between Kazooie and a clogged up Loggy, easily missable if you choose not to talk to him again. Basically Kazooie says "If you want help call a plumber. I think Mario's free at the moment." To which Loggy responds with "I don't think he actually does that sort of thing anymore..." Not saying its gospel but its food for thought.
