I love that Tooie didnt fallow the usual sequal formula for the time of losing all previously obtained powers at the start of the game. Instead it builds upon the moveset already acquired in the first game.
As much as the train station stuff sucks, you can actually call the train by talking to the sign post! Love this game! So many tricks and challenges to master!
I was just about to comment this as well till i seen your comment. I never even knew you could do this either until playing through it again a few years back
Other than Canary Mary, I never quite got the newfound hate over this game. I liked everything Rare added to spice Banjo-Kazooie up, adding some new challenges to the game to where everything now isn't exactly straightforward. It's got that adventurous charm that I think really contributes to the fun experience of the franchise. I liked the new Jinjo sidequests. I like how you *keep* the music notes you collected to purchase moves from Jamjars. I like the interconnective nature of Grunty Industries. Most of the new bosses were great. I think the soundtrack's an artistic masterpiece. There are so many good qualities about this game that make me say it's a terrific sequel.
Everytime I start playing kazooie I stop for a moment and realize how much I'd rather be playing tooie and how many more fond memories I have with tooie over kazooie. Not that tooie is better exactly but i think it added what the series needed for the game to feel complete.
It's hip to follow the hivemind, and the hivemind states that platformers (like SM64 and therefore BK) are good and collectathons (like DK64 and therefore BT) are bad. Sorry, you have a different opinion based on logical arguments instead of appealing to the masses?? Too bad!!!
Link one video that trashes it. Everyone loves the game but most people acknowledge the fact that Kazooie is flawless masterpiece and tooie is great but flawed in some places.
I like how Kazooie complains that you deserve an extra Jiggy after saving the dinosaur kids, like, even the programmers knew it was a lot of nonsense for one Jiggy
Honestly this game was a huge improvement over the first game. 1999 DK64 came out and 2000 this game came out and was based on the DK64 engine in a way. I hum every single level of Banjo Kazooie/Tooie and DK64 which is a testament to Grant’s talent to make ear worms and certified hood classics. I’m also a Metroid fan and love the aspect of exploration so the backtracking is fun to me.
While I completely disagree with your opinions about Terrydactyland, it's great to see some love for Tooie in such a well-thought-out video. Excellent writing and presentation too. Looking forward to all your future videos!
Banjo Tooie has always been my favorite as well. I love the interconnected and detailed worlds, the darker and more realistic setting and the "backtracking" (which is what makes this game special). The backtracking got me curios as a kid, as you could some times litterally see a part of the world you could not go to yet. Either that, or you could even see into another world. To this day I still miss that feature in games. It was a very clever way of making the player curios. It also functioned as an incentive to learn new moves and check every corner of the world. Loved the video!
I don’t know how many more are like me but my first Banjo game was Tooie . I don’t think my family ever knew that it was a sequel. I remember being so confused with the controls and wondering why grunty was so mad at Bottles and why they just ran over the grey jinjos . Definitely a unique experience, I have trouble playing the original now because it feels like so much was taken from me
As someone who also prefers Tooie to Kazooie (though I love both), this is an excellent video that does a great job of emphasizing Tooie’s strengths, such as the better level themes, the interconnected, lived in world, lowering the Jiggy requirement to reach the ending, and the slew of amazing additional powerups/transformations/ideas which highlight the ambition on display in this amazing sequel. Also, we so need a Banjo Kazooie/Tooie remake double pack on all modern consoles. Maybe Banjo Redooie? 😂
32:46 Great summarization regarding the negative perception of this game and the somewhat unfair apple and oranges comparisons between Tooie and the prequel game. The metroidvania comparison regarding the backtracking segment was spot on, I never honestly thought about it, but it is the same principle in game design and level design terms. For me, it was always a great exploration experience and led to one rewarding aha moment to the other whenever I realized how the paths of the game worlds were connected to each other. My friend and I just started to replay this game after almost more than a decade since childhood, and we were positively surprised how well the varying gameplay and the humor had aged (lots of great play of words and also mature humor was hidden between the lines of dialogues which we never noticed as kids), so we were able to appreciate this game in a completely new way. Also, thank you for pointing the dynamic ambient soundtrack out by showing those variations of the game world leitmotif. Fans generally appreciate Grant Kirkhope's compositions, but I do think that the music direction and the smooth transitions depending on the different segments of the game world in Tooie can be easily overlooked. For me, it was really ahead its time. I remember how much time I spent as a kid in front of the jukebox in Jolly Roger's Lagoon just to listen through all the variations (the water versions were often among my favorites), and it shaped my perception on ambient sound and how the choice of instruments can impact the association and imagination of settings and sceneries. My favorite aspect about it was that the boss enemies has a fast-paced version of those leitmotifs as their main theme which also fits their nature and personality, making them even more memorable. Peak music and game design. Taking all this into account while seeing how the game's criticism is often reduced to its backtracking aspect and "overly big world" and nothing more which ngl often sound like shallow hearsay impressions, it makes me wonder, how much of the actual game the people behind those negative reviews actually saw and played themselves back then
As seen in that parking-lot episode of Seinfeld, a lot of people relate to having a bad sense of direction/the inability to develop a mental map of an area. So even though the game gives you warp pads, people still struggle to find where they want to go (i.e. return to) and therefore in their hidden anger at themselves blame "worlds are too big" to easily criticise the game instead of actually trying to work on developing a better sense of direction in videogames.
To me, the most appealing part of the Banjo games was never the platforming and moment-to-moment gameplay (which is still good), but the charm of the worlds and characters. Tooie focusing more on exploration and detailed interactions felt like it leaned towards the series' strengths, making the worlds and cast more organic while retaining the wit and wacky scenarios that made Banjo Kazooie engaging. If Bano Kazooie is like a theme park, where you go from ride to ride through a colourfully constructed world, Banjo Tooie is like a road trip through a new country as you talk with the locals and try to find your place around different landmarks and events. Which one a person likes more will come down to personal taste, but they both are good ways for an adventure to be laid out, with Tooie's interconnected world helping to define what a Banjo game is beyond a Mario 64-ese platformer.
If you haven’t already, I think you should try Yooka-Laylee. It’s a spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie made by former Rare employees. It’s not perfect, but I really enjoyed it. There is also a new version coming out soon with (hopefully) improved controls
Most people loved Tooie more back in the days. Its the modern days where we changed and got less time for playing. Back as kids when we got 1-2 games in a year this was just awesome. Big game with exploring for months to complete 100% Sucks maybe today because of backtracking but back than it was great to get more playtime because we hadn't 5000 games And that feeling never changed for me. Tooie deserve more love
I remember growing up loving this game and being extremely confused when I finally went online and saw people parroting that it wasn't good. "The levels are too big" felt like such a ridiculous criticism. This is validating, thank you!
Tooie is 100 percent better. Bigger worlds, wayyyyyy harder and challenging, way more powers, it's better in every aspect. Kazooie is just a sweet spot for most people. Cause they remember being lost in tooie while kazooie held there hand through out the game
@@briansmith5513 Yes, I enjoy the vastness of the game. I love the adventure feel. Above all, the moves and transformations are WAY better than the previous game.
Regarding the under-usage of the submarine transformation: I mostly agree, but it is cool that you can use it to fight Lord Woo Fak Fak and not have to worry about grenade egg ammo
I also prefer Banjo-Tooie. Banjo-Kazooie was an amazing game, and as much as I liked Kazooie, I like Tooie better. It's good to know there are other people like yourself that give Tooie the respect it deserves.
If I'm being honest, I didn't even know people hated Tooie this much until a bunch of youtubers made videos about how frustrating they found the game and unfavorably compared it to Kazooie. Like a lot of the arguments I've seen made is that Tooie was nothing like Kazooie and they should've just done Kazooie again. My counter argument to that would be: then it would've been hated for just being the same game again. I enjoy Tooie a whole lot and I often remember begging my mother to rent it for me and each time I'd get a little further into the game. Then one day in the early 2000s we were at a gamestop and saw Tooie for like $15 [cart only] so you better believe I asked and then finally I owned Tooie and 100%ed it for the first time in my life. It's so satisfying because I viewed Tooie as this insurmountable game I could never 100% the way I did Kazooie. I do love Kazooie on it's own merits. It's a fun game to revisit and everytime I replay it, I ALWAYS 100% it. I'm approaching that same level with Tooie because I've only 100%ed it twice in my life. The only criticism I have against Tooie is something that wasn't even in it's control: The stop n swop rewards. When they finally implemented them into the XBLA version, I was super disappointed to find out that most of them were for Nuts n Bolts. Either way, it's nice to see more people finding Tooie to be a gem as opposed to a bad game where all you do is wait for things to happen. I also never understood that criticism either. Waiting in a video game is something you do regardless of however much gameplay it has. I do hope the game gets decompiled along with Banjo-Kazooie so that we can customize that sort of thing to create the definitive experience.
Depends for me. Better 3D platformer? I disagree there. The first game is packed with excitement in every moment. But if we’re comparing Kazooie as a platformer to Tooie as an adventure game, I think the gap is narrowed enough to make the case for Tooie. It is a pretty good one with lots of variety, character, and one of the best soundtracks on the console.
I perfectly agree with your statement, I do think that tooie is just better overall. But I’d like to use this comment as a sort of way to get out something that’s been really grinding my gears lately. I’ve heard a lot of criticism of this game that there’s a lot of backtracking needed in tooie, and in my opinion, kazooie has just as much backtracking, but more so unintentional than the sequel. So some context, I’ve been playing through both of the games recently, but most of the second game has been me suffering in the hub world. There’s been 4 or so separate instances where I’ve needed to be in a spot that requires banjo and kazooie to get something, an example would be where you enter the jigsaw pieces into freezeasy peak, only for you to need to return to the swamp area, get the crocodile, then go all the way back. And so that’s been my main gripe with the game, the fact that there’s no good fast travel throughout the lair also makes me rather upset.
I've only really watched the intro so far, but it's nice to see such a positive take on Banjo-Tooie! I will readily admit there are a couple small things I prefer about Kazooie (ie; Notes being individual, locating puzzles around the lair, Grunty's Lair in general) but I adore Tooie as well, if not slightly more I guess the larger levels can be a bit tedious to traverse at times, but I don't generally mind too much since I like every level's aesthetics - Terrydactyland might be my least favorite, but my opinion is still on the positive side. The new moves are awesome, and the tweak to old moves (such as the roll) are great too
The Cauldron keep issue I blame solely on the whole entire level that was cut due to time constraints I hope one day the game gets a full on remaster/remake with the original cauldron keep design
@@KaryanMendoza You're welcome :). Do you have anything in particular about Banjo-Tooie that was your favorite? It would be hard for me to pick one thing since the entire game is nostalgic. I've played both Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie, and while I liked both, I like Tooie slightly better. Like you previously stated, it is indeed the best sequel ever.
I had no clue people hated on Tooie? I loved both games but I enjoy Tooie more. I know people don’t like Grunty Industries but it’s one of my favorite levels.
This might be a bad time to mention that if you talk to the Chuffy Train sign at the Train station, if Chuffy isn't at your current station, you can call him to you. (So you don't have to get get him from a different level.)
Tooie is my favorite game of all time, I've always liked it more than the first game. I think of it as an adventure-collectathon, rather than just a collectathon.
Banjo-Tooie is the game of my life, i love it, was one of the first games i played. At the time, when i was a kid, i played the Japanese version because i received from my friend that was going to move, i played the whole game, but couldn't beat it because the final was a Quiz about the game and i do not speak Japanese 😂😂😂 I only beat it years ago when i played the English version, still hope this game has a sequence or a Remake Greetings from Brazil!!
23:43 the section where you run back-and-forth between all the character transformations gets MUCH worse if you’re a first-time player or haven’t played in a long time, since you probably don’t know how to get the roar. For, as I recall, the only time in either game, you have to talk to one of the enemies to learn a new move! Talk to a stegosaurus as a baby to learn the roar. So, you may end up running around like an idiot, changing to Mumbo to resize Humba’s Wigwam, changing back to BK, then transforming, over and over again, just to eventually FINALLY figure out to TALK to AN ENEMY!!! This is one of those things that likely makes players sour about the game. Much like with the Water Temple from Ocarina of Time, a pro can admit that the implementation was clunky, but will say it’s not that bad, but people remember when they were playing the first time (usually as a kid) and had to loop back around and slog through retracing their steps for an hour before finally finding, or looking up, the answer.
Lord woo fak fak as a funny name has a funny origin too! The name came from one of the employees who while at work would go WOO when he was happy or start cursing if he got mad. Put those two together and you get lord woo fak fak lol.
someone datamined that bird race and found out that it rubber bands so hard its almost impossible to beat if you're good at it. it was the only jiggy i couldnt get as a kid.
Literally such an unforgettable expierence, my dreams exist in the world of banjo kazooie, tooie, and dk 64, rare has the most heart out of any classic games 💚
I loved Banjo-Kazooie but Banjo-Tooie was and is my favorite I would fly around as kazooie for hours as a kid just exploring and having fun I still pick it up and replay it every couple years just to relive the nostalgia but kazooie i don't replay nearly as much. I don't understand the hate
Banjo-Tooie is my favorite video game, and has been since I was a child. It's absolutely underappreciated, and I'm thrilled to see there are others that also like BT. For me, I like how dark it is and how difficult some of the levels can be. The diverse moveset also makes things a lot more fun to play over BK. The only thing I don't like is Canary Mary, but I'm willing to overlook her due to the insane amount of pros this game has.
Personally, I think the reason the backtracking in a Metroid game is less intrusive than Tooie is that in a Metroid game, you get only around 10 or so moves to play with. In Tooie, you have 30+ moves, and any one of them could be the solution to a puzzle. For example, cooling the water in Hailfire Peaks. I think the most reasonable first thought is to use your Ice Eggs, but that's not it. Oh, there's ice all over the second half of the stage, it could be that, but no. Maybe I could transform into a snowball and cool it that way, nadda. What's the solution? A character I haven't met yet, in a stage I haven't played yet. Yes, Mildred tells you about her husband, but the ask was to save him, so I think not expecting that to be the solution, while a funny twist, is frustrating. And almost every world has at least one puzzle like this.
A couple more things: When mentioned about the amazingly terrifying music, I loved it too! However, this game induced a reoccurring nightmare of King Coal from Glitter Gulch Mine as a child. I was pretty young when I first played it lol
Lord woo fak fak scared the absolute crap out of little me. You don't understand how scary this game can be until you played it on an old crt with that default super contrasted setting where everything is dark. Scared me so much man. Same with the carnival it was so spooky and dark on my childhood crt. Same with N64 Zelda. The mood and atmosphere was just the bees knees.
4:41 Tooty was supposed to appear in Tooie, as early storyboards showed she was at least part of the opening but was probably cut due to the pointlessness of her character at that point in the series. Since a vengeful Grunty was more than enough of a reason to get the duo back in action.
tooie was far too ahead of the curve and no i'm not sorry to say that. it does have issues and definitely feels pretty overwhelming after kazooie but tooie's new upgrades and interconnected worlds just stole my heart. Rare proved then that if you think something can be done in a manner tooie probably CAN. did that game confuse me to no end and me getting lost? yes. did i rent that game one too many times at blockbuster and keep on finding random stuff i didn't know? yes. did i once not realize jolly roger's lagoon had a whole other level underneath the lake? yes. do i love dragon kazooie? yes. yes i love tooie, finally someone with some appreciation for the gem. tooie enthusiasts DO EXIST!!
I remember getting to the end of banjo tooie and scaling gruntys mountain. Some bad things were going on in my family at the time, so it felt so nice to be able to be able escape into the world and do something with my time instead of being sad over stuff I couldn’t control. Thanks for this video. Brought back a lot of nice memories for me. Also the first Minjo I saw in witchy world jump scared me so bad I turned the game off.
It is better and you can immediately see why with Banjo's roll - you are given greater maneuverability in Tooie than Kazooie, in which iirc is only a roll in a straight line. The Tooie roll can be angled left-or-right.
This is a great channel, I disagree that tooie was better, but subscribed because I enjoyed your take on it. going to watch your starfox video when I have a chance. cheers!
To me the difference between Kazooie and Tooie is similar to Fable 1 and 2. There is more to do in both sequels, they are deeper more expansive games with more complex move sets and mechanics. However, Banjo Kazooie, like Fable 1, just feels cleaner and never outstays its welcome. Tooie has fantastic level design a fun story and it excellently expands on what was set up by the original. But the self contained nature of Kazooie will always be better for me to revisit. They both hit incredible highs but I feel Tooie just has more lows
They are both good in different ways. The first game is more straightforward with most Jiggies being easy to find, while the second is a little more puzzling.
Tooie gang 😎 Both games are great but it baffles me that people that people hate on this game so much. It's a much more satisfying experience in my opinion, with quality of life improvements and (albeit maybe a biiit too much) added complexity. Kazooie laid the foundation yet I never feel the urge to go back to it after having beaten it twice when I could just replay Tooie for the 7th or 8th time. Tooie is way more charming and enjoyable of an adventure imo.
This has to be one of my fav game of all time. I remember my dad got me this game for my birthday and I was so over joyed that I almost cried. I played the hell out of this game as a kid, and still play this game as an adult. The dark atmosphere was probably one of the hightlights of this game, cause it sure gave me a scare- even to this day I can't enter the Jinjo king palace without getting the chills. I even dare to say that Banjo Tooie is better than the first game.
I never click on videos that discuss Banjo-Tooie in a negative light, cause I take that shit personally. You're damn right it's better, and it's always been my favorite videogame of all time. I've never met anyone in person that praises it like I do. Even if people keep dismissing this game as just another 3D Platformer, I'm just glad that at least Smash Bros. immortalized this franchise, which puts Banjo-Tooie on more people's radar.
Banjo-Kazooie is Ocarina of Time and Banjo-Tooie is Majora's Mask. Most people arent ready to admit that the sequel is as good, if not better, than the original because it would go against the original feeling they had when they picked up the first game.
this And yet for some reason, people universally praise Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door for being better than Super Mario Galaxy and Paper Mario respectively, despite the fact that I believe neither games improved on their originals enough to justify universal praise. At best, they are equal in quality, if not worse. Maybe bc the N64 kids would have been teens/adults when TTYD and SMG2 came out???
@@CoNteMpTone people who refuse to learn to understand games that are darker, have more complex themes, and usually contain timey-wimey stuff - which imo is the majority of people - still maintain that OoT is a masterpiece whereas MM "has its faults"
Great review! I think Tooie is a much better game than Kazooie, but Kazooie is so much easier to pick up and play through. I love both of the games! By the way, Klungo's techniques in his boss fights are actually chosen random. It's possible for him to turn invisible on the first encounter and duplicate on his second. Or Duplicate on his third but grow big on the second, etc.
I'm happy to see more love for tooie as time goes on! I didn't get to play tooie as a kid, only the first game and later on I played it expecting it to be annoying/bad like people had always said, but I ended up liking it. Yes, it's very big and some parts suck (canary mary obv and the train station stuff) but I thought it was a great game overall. I've beaten it twice. The inter connected worlds is cool and I thought it was neat tbh. Both banjo games hold up very well in my opinion, but I like platformers and collect-a-thon games a lot so maybe I'm biased lol
I feel the disconnect for this game was not being able to grab all the jiggies in one run. You had to backtrack almost every level. In a collecthathon we want to be able to find everything and move on to the next level. Only once does this happen in kazooie so it didn’t break the flow of collecting. Backtracking is good but in a collecthathon I feel it takes away from the game. In a game like resident evil I love backtracking because it helps you find stronger weapons for future bosses. This is why kazooie has more replay value since it flows better into collecting everything as that is the point of these games. With that said this is still a great game and you get a different experience from both games.
Perfect video to run into when I've been replaying the game. I think I like Tooie more simply cus I like 3D platformers more where you jump around between worlds instead of completing one all at once and moving onto the next one, like Kazooie
IMHO, Anyone who complains the a 3d collectathon takes too long to 100% completely misses the point on what makes 3d collectathons fun. It's about NOT needing to get everything and being able to have more freedom to progress throug the game. It's only when the game forces you to 100% if you want to finish it where it's a problem.
It’s very refreshing to hear a different opinion on these two games. I loved tooie so much as a kid, the worlds were more difficult to navigate so I spent a lot of time engrossed by the worlds. Not even to mention the multiplayer, oof man I remember my little brother and I playing the FPS game and like just running around the map and we would pretend that we had shops and make little bases in our favorite spots of the map. All of that is priceless idk, tooie really is a fantastic game. Just for my money tho I have to say kazooie edges it out by a bit. The atmosphere, more concise gameplay, the performance on the original N64. Man. And I really felt where you were coming from with “some people prefer the vibes of kazooie but it wouldn’t have been worthwhile to just rehash it” because I totally agree, hearing that argument yk. Never thought about it like that but it’s true. Great fucking games and great fucking vid :)
Im glad to finally see some creators showing Tooie the love it absolutely deserves. I played Tooie first, then went to Kazooie. Going back felt like a downgrade. I had a similar experience with Majoras Mask and OOT. Maybe I just really like dark sequels.
Agree with many of the points, however Freezeasy Peak > Punk Hazard (Ice/Fire level) Also in Kazooie you could stare into the painting in your house to do puzzle challenges which gave you cheats (reset everything after rebooting / closing & starting the game again) where the last challenge gave you the code "Wishy Washy Banjo" which also turned you into a washing machine (so not only failed mumbo transformation but actually controllable / playable washing machine)
How to make Threeie the best, part 1: Offer a good mix of playground and exploration. Offering worlds that bring the best of the first game's platforming and playground-style exploration and Tooie's exploration and scope would be perfect for a grand return to form.
The first game is very simple, which is fine but not really what I'm looking to go back to. I love going back to Tooie because of how much more complex the game is. It's not a perfect game, I can't stand Grunty Industries and the later worlds feel too much like mazes at times. Overall it's still fun and makes me wish we could have gotten a true 3rd game in the same style.
Everyone acts like backtracking in a game is some G R I E V O U S sin, so they needlessly pan Tooie and prop up Kazooie... even though Kazooie is so segmented. I'll always appreciate the cohesiveness of Tooie far more. Heck, even the animation in Tooie is better. In Tooie, Banjo has a livelier, bouncier running animation - complete with bouncing backpack.
The backtracking in Tooie is fine cuz the worlds are connected. But the beloved game that is Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door? Now THAT'S some garbage with unacceptable backtracking. And it was intentional. Not even in a way that seems like the developers wanted to pad out the game, but rather in a way that seems like the developers were trolls who wanted to anger Paper Mario fans. And yet THAT game is loved. So do people ACTUALLY hate backtracking...??
I think people apply "is backtracking bad" differently to different game genres. Metroidvania = Always good, even when sometimes it is really tedious to do so. 3D Platformer = Instantly bad, unless it only happens once or twice, like in BK - BUT HOLD ON, if you think about it, you "backtrack" all the time during gameplay. Just turned into a termite in MM? You will be returning to Ticker's Tower where you picked up a Mumbo Token. Want to collect your reward for Bottle's challenges? Gotta make your way back to TTC, AND deal with Leaky the bucket again. Entered Clanker's blowhole? You probably went down the exit that drops you into his mouth, meaning you need to leave him and re-enter the blowhole to enter the other path. Left BS as a crocodile, then entered the path to the FP puzzle? You can stand in the jigsaw podium to unlock FP, but if you want to know what is behind that block of ice, you gotta come back as BK to destroy it AND THEN come back as the crocodile to fit in the hole to meet Cheato for the first time. Etc. etc. RPGs like TTYD: Eh, seems to depend on the game/series. I have seen genuine criticism of the tedious backtracking in TTYD. However, despite this people are still able to just throw this aside and say it is one of the best games ever, and is somehow better than the original Paper Mario (which also had backtracking, but iirc not as egregious as in TTYD).
I also prefer Tooie to Kazooie, while loving both of them dearly. But I do have a couple or disagreements. I think the issue of backtracking in Tooie is far different in a Metroidvania game. Most of those are for optional upgrades towards a completionist count, or the new feature gives a new way to interact with a new area entirely. Tooie's backtracking is more core to the gameplay loop (to get Jiggies usually), yet adds nothing new beyond 'new key to unlock old door' that could have just been in the home world, or requiring too much side work for too little reward (see the pigs wanting Grunty's Industries AND FrostFire to pad the jiggy count). BK allowed a 100% on nearly each map on first arrival (you could even outskill the croc without speed shoes), so swapping to 80-90% just feels bad. If it was far more integrated, like 40-60% of each map was obtainable the first time around, I would be more fine with it. But I agree with the haters on this point. I think it would also be fine if they indicated on the completion screen if you got everything that you could so far or not, so you know when you can leave once "first pass 100%'d". Also I'm confused how Grunty's Industries gets a pass when you aren't a fan of Click Clock Wood. GI is more samey than CCW, and annoying to navigate. CCW at least made the new method of climbing the tree novel or interesting. GI forces you to swap at Humba to even use the elevator. Plus GI's grimey interiors all look the same, but at least having CCW's season themed areas make it simple enough to intuit the differences.

Too bad!!!
You are one of the very few people that does not trash Banjo-Tooie.
Link one video that trashes it. Everyone loves the game but most people acknowledge the fact that Kazooie is flawless masterpiece and tooie is great but flawed in some places.
@@CoNteMpToneI don't really "love" the game... maybe that would change once I eventually beat it.
@@Hyp3rSonic yeah well...
This is my favorite game, glad to see it get some love now and again.
It deserves it!
My favorite N64 and Rareware game.
I like how Kazooie complains that you deserve an extra Jiggy after saving the dinosaur kids, like, even the programmers knew it was a lot of nonsense for one Jiggy
I remember playing this when it was new, and now I feel old.
Thanks, I appreciate that!
All they had to do was make the threeie. That's it.
Taking all this into account while seeing how the game's criticism is often reduced to its backtracking aspect and "overly big world" and nothing more which ngl often sound like shallow hearsay impressions, it makes me wonder, how much of the actual game the people behind those negative reviews actually saw and played themselves back then
Well said, I couldn't agree more
As seen in that parking-lot episode of Seinfeld, a lot of people relate to having a bad sense of direction/the inability to develop a mental map of an area.
So even though the game gives you warp pads, people still struggle to find where they want to go (i.e. return to) and therefore in their hidden anger at themselves blame "worlds are too big" to easily criticise the game instead of actually trying to work on developing a better sense of direction in videogames.
I do find myself replaying Banjo Tooie often. It was a masterpiece+
I never was able to complete tooie but I totally agree with the first 12m! Hope we can get a recomp port soon!
If you haven’t already, I think you should try Yooka-Laylee. It’s a spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie made by former Rare employees. It’s not perfect, but I really enjoyed it. There is also a new version coming out soon with (hopefully) improved controls
I didn't know that thinking banjo tooie was better than banjo kazooie was a hot take. I thought it was obvious for most people.
I'm so glad more and more people are giving Tooie the respect it deserves.
I love both of these games, I like the first one better, but they're both on my favorites list for sure...very enjoyable video
Thanks, I appreciate it!
Most people loved Tooie more back in the days. Its the modern days where we changed and got less time for playing. Back as kids when we got 1-2 games in a year this was just awesome. Big game with exploring for months to complete 100%
Sucks maybe today because of backtracking but back than it was great to get more playtime because we hadn't 5000 games
And that feeling never changed for me. Tooie deserve more love
I remember growing up loving this game and being extremely confused when I finally went online and saw people parroting that it wasn't good. "The levels are too big" felt like such a ridiculous criticism. This is validating, thank you!
"2/10 too much water"
Banjo Kazooie is my all time favorite game. And I prefer it over Tooie but I'm not gonna pretend Tooie isn't an amazing game.
I never played the first one but I loved Banjo Tooie when I had a 64 years ago
Tooie is 100 percent better. Bigger worlds, wayyyyyy harder and challenging, way more powers, it's better in every aspect. Kazooie is just a sweet spot for most people. Cause they remember being lost in tooie while kazooie held there hand through out the game
@@briansmith5513 Yes, I enjoy the vastness of the game. I love the adventure feel. Above all, the moves and transformations are WAY better than the previous game.
Kazooie is more streamlined and polished, whereas Tooie is more ambitious and expansive.
Regarding the under-usage of the submarine transformation: I mostly agree, but it is cool that you can use it to fight Lord Woo Fak Fak and not have to worry about grenade egg ammo
That is cool, I should have mentioned it!
This is the way!
"On that fish are boils a-plenty,
Shoot something at them - maybe a grenade egg?,
Or a torpedo might do the trick,
Use your wit - don't be thick!"
I also prefer Banjo-Tooie. Banjo-Kazooie was an amazing game, and as much as I liked Kazooie, I like Tooie better. It's good to know there are other people like yourself that give Tooie the respect it deserves.
Idea: A new Banjo-Kazooie game, but starring a now-adult Tooty & her own little snarky sidekick living in her fanny-pack or purse.
That sounds like a good spin-off.
SFW & NSFW alike can get behind that
Glad I have my copy still. Also Tooty is alive
I never seen Tooie get so much hate either. It’s just like with DK 64 which is also an amazing game
@@Anthonyvideogame DK64 is so peak. It has flaws, but so do all games.
Finally, a good video about Tooie. Pretty cool.
I will readily admit there are a couple small things I prefer about Kazooie (ie; Notes being individual, locating puzzles around the lair, Grunty's Lair in general) but I adore Tooie as well, if not slightly more
I guess the larger levels can be a bit tedious to traverse at times, but I don't generally mind too much since I like every level's aesthetics - Terrydactyland might be my least favorite, but my opinion is still on the positive side. The new moves are awesome, and the tweak to old moves (such as the roll) are great too
The Cauldron keep issue I blame solely on the whole entire level that was cut due to time constraints I hope one day the game gets a full on remaster/remake with the original cauldron keep design
Banjo-Tooie is incredible. The best sequel ever.
Not only do you have good taste, but you're also incredibly beautiful.
@@JohnDoe15871 thank you so much ☺
@@KaryanMendoza You're welcome :).
In my opinion, Banjo-Tooie is what DK64 failed to be.
Banjo tooie is a masterpiece in every regard
When I beat this game as a kid, I didn't even know cloud coocoo land existed. Never played it till I was older and saw it in a retrospective
This might be a bad time to mention that if you talk to the Chuffy Train sign at the Train station, if Chuffy isn't at your current station, you can call him to you. (So you don't have to get get him from a different level.)
Honestly Tooie is the first game i ever played on my old 64 back in the day. Easily my favorite over the OG just because of that
14:30 I'm so glad you included this 😂 Definitely the high point of playing as Mumbo. Silly Moggies
Playing this now! I’ve got 31 jiggies!
Awesome!
Tooie is my favorite game of all time, I've always liked it more than the first game. I think of it as an adventure-collectathon, rather than just a collectathon.
As a kid I played Tooie first and when I stole Banjo-Kazooie from blockbuster I was a little disappointed it wasn't as grand as Tooie.
I always wondered why they went out of business... 🤔
Banjo-Tooie is the game of my life, i love it, was one of the first games i played. At the time, when i was a kid, i played the Japanese version because i received from my friend that was going to move, i played the whole game, but couldn't beat it because the final was a Quiz about the game and i do not speak Japanese 😂😂😂
I only beat it years ago when i played the English version, still hope this game has a sequence or a Remake

No matter what side of the spectrum you’re on for this debate. We can all agree we need Banjo Threeie

As a kid, I liked banjo kazooie, but tooie was my favorite to replay
Y'know, sometimes the algorithm gets it right and gives something new, even from a small creator.
I know what I'll be watching for awhile.
That's so kind of you to say! Glad to have you here
Banjo-Tooie is my favorite video game, and has been since I was a child.
Couldn't agree more!
A couple more things:
When mentioned about the amazingly terrifying music, I loved it too!
@@Touma134 I remember my reaction to seeing him with no pupils. I thought, "I don't know if I want to play this! 😂"
Talking about scary, the jinjo king still gives me the hebejebes even at the age of 30. Still gives me the chills lol
4:41 Tooty was supposed to appear in Tooie, as early storyboards showed she was at least part of the opening but was probably cut due to the pointlessness of her character at that point in the series. Since a vengeful Grunty was more than enough of a reason to get the duo back in action.
Tooie also has graphics that are slightly sharper and with better lighting IMO.
tooie was far too ahead of the curve and no i'm not sorry to say that.
it does have issues and definitely feels pretty overwhelming after kazooie but tooie's new upgrades and interconnected worlds just stole my heart.
Thanks for being here!
what exactly?
You mean cauldron keep right?
6:38 Glad I'm not the only kid who would just sit around absorbing the atmosphere of Jingo Village
Terrydactyland was my favourite level in Tooie.
I've heard that from several people! I always like to hear what people have to say about it, it's interesting to hear other view points
It is better and you can immediately see why with Banjo's roll - you are given greater maneuverability in Tooie than Kazooie, in which iirc is only a roll in a straight line. The Tooie roll can be angled left-or-right.
This is a great channel, I disagree that tooie was better, but subscribed because I enjoyed your take on it. going to watch your starfox video when I have a chance. cheers!
Thanks, that means a lot!
This is my all time favorite n64 game! I used to play it all the time when I was a kid! I still play it to this day!
They are both good in different ways. The first game is more straightforward with most Jiggies being easy to find, while the second is a little more puzzling.
Nice video! I love Tooie!
Crazy that people hate this game when Nuts and Bolts exists.
Most people arent ready to admit that the sequel is as good, if not better, than the original because it would go against the original feeling they had when they picked up the first game.
this
And yet for some reason, people universally praise Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door for being better than Super Mario Galaxy and Paper Mario respectively, despite the fact that I believe neither games improved on their originals enough to justify universal praise. At best, they are equal in quality, if not worse.
Maybe bc the N64 kids would have been teens/adults when TTYD and SMG2 came out???
Nobody has ever disagreed with majoras mask being better.
@@CoNteMpTone people who refuse to learn to understand games that are darker, have more complex themes, and usually contain timey-wimey stuff - which imo is the majority of people - still maintain that OoT is a masterpiece whereas MM "has its faults"

No one has called tooie a bad game lol. Its a great game. Its just not a flawless masterpiece.
Fantastic analysis
This was the first video game I ever remember playing, and it completely set my tastes in games for life. Love it so much
It’s very refreshing to hear a different opinion on these two games.
Finally...someone said it.
Im glad to finally see some creators showing Tooie the love it absolutely deserves. I played Tooie first, then went to Kazooie. Going back felt like a downgrade. I had a similar experience with Majoras Mask and OOT. Maybe I just really like dark sequels.
Agree with many of the points, however Freezeasy Peak > Punk Hazard (Ice/Fire level)
Also in Kazooie you could stare into the painting in your house to do puzzle challenges which gave you cheats (reset everything after rebooting / closing & starting the game again) where the last challenge gave you the code "Wishy Washy Banjo" which also turned you into a washing machine (so not only failed mumbo transformation but actually controllable / playable washing machine)
I love Terrydactyland... it's my third-favorite level in Tooie and I like it more than any level in Kazooie.
Its the most othing level so big but the jiggies only being in the sub areas
How to make Threeie the best, part 1: Offer a good mix of playground and exploration.
Offering worlds that bring the best of the first game's platforming and playground-style exploration and Tooie's exploration and scope would be perfect for a grand return to form.
consider: "Kazoothree"
I love how you covered this, my favorite game. Awesome video!
Thank you! ❤️
I think tooie is the same game but more and bigger. So how can it be anything else but better.
