Gervin finished with 39 points in what looked to be a one-man show against the Laker dynasty.
Iceman would absolutely make it in ANY era

Most stars would. It's just a question of whether the rules of a particular era would help them or hurt them. But a superstar wouldn't just disappear because of a different era.
Nah somebody like Rod Strickland who was an all star wouldn't cut it in todays game as an elite player because of the lack of a jumper
@@DreDaDon16 Sure he would. Rondo doesn't have a jumper and was a 4 time all-star and 1 time all-nba. Ben Simmons doesn't have a jumper and is a 3 time all-star and 1 time all-nba in only his first 4 seasons. Strickland never made an all-star team and was 1 time all-nba. And he had a better jumper than Rondo or Simmons.
A smoother operator. A quiet assassin who had a unique signature of hoops. The Iceman to this day remains one of a kind.
That he was.No great shakes on defense.But as a scorer he was awesome.Had a unique style on offense.

Im from Detroit & my summer school math teacher was Ice's old coach. Ice came back 1 summer & my old teacher took our class to see him play a summer league game. Ice put on a show with a million moves. Dunks, finger rolls, jumpers, up & unders, sweet ass reverse lay ups, Bank shots, all net shots. He did it all

Folks, keep in mind .... Gervin wasn't like Wilt, he didn't overpower you. Not like Tiny Archibald, he didn't outrun or out dribble you. He just took what the defense gave him (and more) and embarrassed you. And did it over and over again.
he never looks rushed or in a hurry. I notice his last two steps after he gathered are also very clever, kinda like manu ginobili but to a less degree. and man, it makes cooper look like harden in defense, like he gets blown by with no effort
No kidding. And who could do that (to Cooper). Very few.
Gervin could stop on a dime, change direction and shoot over you, or go right by you. Deceptively quick!
He was and did all of that. He could score every imaginable way. No ONE has ever had a greater arsenal of shots. He was pretty good with his left hand, too. As was Westphal and Bird.
A smooth, machine-like jump shot that rarely missed, George Gervin played fearlessly, despite his thin frame. He was always creating and adapting his game to the defense. There is video of him getting an offensive rebound and going up between Caldwell Jones and Darryl Dawkins and dunking on them. It is so unfair that he is overlooked because San Antonio of his day did not win a championship.

Gervins layup package was something serious.He gives MJ a run for his money in that category.
You know, Ice had soooo many moves, so many shots, could use either hand, that it seems no one or few, remember he was also a GREAT pure shooter. His jumper is as deadly as anyone's. And few talk about that. They mention West, Bird, Miller, Curry, but Ice could shoot with ANY of em. Or better.
All these u tube clips dont even do Ice any justice.I saw Ice do way better moves than this stuff I am seeing on u tube.
@@ralphgreenwood2469 still, I've seen morons ( who obviously never saw him play) say "he won 4 scoring titles shooting layups." This guy was a superb jump shooter. This clip shows a nice array of his artillery.
What made the 70's, and 80's player different was everyone looked and played different styles. Today, players are manufactured like assembly line production, practicing and copying the same moves. The crossover, stepback, Euro step etc etc. This is not a discussion of one era or set of players being better than another, but more of an analysis of why or how the game looks different. Today the game is more formula driven in terms of how you produce or create good players and talent.
and this applies to more than just basketball
U right they got these NBA trainers mass producing these players moves.Have them playing like robots.A lot of those moves do work tho lol.So I cant hate too much.
Hubie coached the ABA champion Kentucky Colonels in 1975. I love his insightful commentary.Hubie is like a Soul Brother in many ways.I enjoyed the Roy Firestone interview with Hubie.His father instilled values/morals in him.Hubie has been around and has always given his all..love the man..class all the way.George Gervin was amazing.Just think..he was teammates with Julius Erving on The Virginia Squires in the ABA and was teammates with MJ his final season in the NBA.Like Walt 'Clyde'Frazier we never saw The Iceman sweat..just a silky smooth scoring machine.
Fun fact Hubie Brown played on the Syracuse U basketball team with Jim Brown the football legend.Big Jim elbowed Hubie in his throat almost killed him.Thats why Hubie voice is so raspy when he talks.Big Jim must have forgotten what sport he was playing that day.Basketball or Football or maybe LaCrosse.They say Jim was the best Lacrosse player that ever lived.

I don't think there has been anyone who used every inch of the backboard like the Iceman. He would spin it to where it would just kiss the top of the glass and drop right in.
One thing he could do" "was finger roll" .The ice man played like he had ice in his veins,,He was one of the smoothest ball players in the league. He scored at will when he needed some points up.Noone in this era that is cooler than George Gervin was

I followed Ice since he was a Virginia Squire February 1973 I went to the hof when he was inducted may 1996 every time he came to Madison Square garden I was there I was his shotgun man like James Silas

But Ice knew how to score no matter who's in front of him.
Ice was a scoring school by himself.
He drove into the teeth of defense and rose above flipping the roll on all of em. Bank shot was deadly, he was special for sure 4x scoring Champ.

There is no scorer today that had as many weapons as Ice, and NEVER WILL BE. Not jordan, Hardon, Durant, Bron, NO ONE!!
The lakers were an all-time great team. They could field an entire lineup of All-Stars, had 3 former or future league MVP's, at least one DPOY, and one of the greatest coaches in the history of team sports. That's a lot for anyone to overcome. Ice only had one other all-star to help him.
The Spurs were on the come up.Becoming real contenders.One of their top players Johnny Moore caught some mysterious ilness.Desert fever they called it.He was never the same after that and the Spurs title hopes went right out the window.
