George Gervin Unleashes the Funk (1980 All-Star MVP Highlights)

  • February 3, 1980 - It may be counter-intuitive to consider a Hall of Famer underrated, but George Gervin may come close to fitting the bill. While mention of his name often triggers thoughts of fingerrolls and iconic Iceman-themed imagery, it's worth noting that Gervin has one of the most impressive resumes in basketball history: 12-time All-Star, five-time All-NBA First Team selections, four consecutive scoring titles (including his 1980 peak when he averaged 33.1 points per game), 16th all-time in points scored (ABA/NBA) and, as the cherry on top, an All-Star MVP award at the 1980 All-Star Game.
The league's leading vote getter, Gervin pieced together a performance that included 34 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals, and one cuffed hammer in the open floor, leading the East to a 144-136 victory.
    Box Score: www.basketball...
Play-by-Play: Brent Musburger, Bill Russell, & Hot Rod Hundley

Gervin, the Iceman, was the reason basketball was my favorite sport, my parents say let's go to the Spurs game, seats were $5 so we also took friends.still friends til today, I was 5yrs old, there were the baseline bums heckling the other team, the song " we will we will rock, we will we will rock you" screaming fans to the point you can't hear yourself cheering after Gervin is hitting shot after shot, louder as the games climates to the end, Spurs usually won at home, the loudest arena in the NBA, super great experience, Thank you Iceman, you're my favorite 😍

Scoring just came so easy to the Iceman because he could score with either hand.
He had a fractured wrist in a game and scored over 20 points left handed.

1979-1980 was literally the first NBA season with the 3 ball.
Guys from the ABA merger would've had it, but NBA vets and rookies fresh out of college like Magic and Bird would've probably never played with it yet

I know this clip is from 2 years ago, but THAT WAS A TRAVEL!! During the past 10 years or so, the NBA has TOTALLY CHANGED how games are officiated.. Casual "modern day" basketball fans don't know jack-squat about the game!! Certainly not from a fundamental perspective.. Presently, NBA rules are interpreted to give the offensive player a HUGE advantage; mainly because it's considered to be more "entertaining" for the fans.. NORMALLY, after picking up your dribble, you're only allowed 2 steps to advance the basketball or go to the hoop.. Not 3, 4, or even 5 STEPS, which is what current NBA players often do.. This is a fact, not an opinion.. Ice took 3 STEPS on that fast break BEFORE he dunked the ball ---- which anyone could see in the slow-motion replay.. That's a violation, no questions asked.. The referee made the RIGHT CALL.. I won't even begin to comment about how current NBA players "carry" the basketball AT LEAST 75% of the time (or even more), which is also a gross violation of traditional basketball rules.. That in itself has had a HUGE IMPACT on the culture of professional basketball compared to the way the game USED TO BE officiated.. Indeed, times have changed..

I don't think I ever saw Moses jump like he did for the block at 1:10! I thought he always just used that big behind of his to root guys out to get the rebound.
The dunk at 3:06! Can you believe a referee called that at all, let alone in an all-star game? There needs to be more of that now. OBTW - He didn't travel. Two-beat step into the jump after picking up the ball. Making that call would take away a big part of Giannis' and KD's games.
4:59 - Erving to Gervin - They were old Virginia Squires teammates in the ABA. I can remember my dad listening to the Paces-Squires on the radio. In addition to those two, the Squires also had George Irvine (future Paces HC), and when they were all three on the floor, you had no idea who had the ball! Gervin to Erving to Irvine....
