As someone who watched Ice during his heydey, as good as compilations like this are, you TRULY can’t appreciate how good he actually was! He could, and DID, score in so many different ways. He wasn’t a shooter, he was a pure scorer, and looked like he was never even trying. It’s a shame his Spurs teams never won it all. They were sublime.

I grew up in Philadelphia in the 70's. Going to the Spectrum to watch the "Iceman" play is the definitive experience that ensured my love of basketball. Regardless of how unstoppable he could be, he just..played. No trash talk, he just ..played. When he was on..didn't matter who tried to guard him. Even now, awe inspiring to watch old tape of him doing his thing on otherwise forgetable Spurs teams in that era.

The finger roll does give the offensive player an advantage in that it can be floated above a taller defender trying to block your shot AND because of the backspin from the "flick" off the finger tips, it's a very soft shot that can roll around around the rim and go in. That finger roll was so nice for Ice that defenders had to pay the price.💪

In my days of playing youth basketball, I loved using this as a finish, especially with a hand switch. I'd watch players like Rod Strickland, Stephon Marbury and Allen Iverson show off their dexterity mid-air, and try to emulate it before and after practices. It definitely was a shot to me that said "I'm too smooth for you". Once I learned who George Gervin was, he immediately became of my favorite players of his time. He demonstrated such personality in his game.

In the truest sense of the term dunks aren't "cool". Cool has to be effortless, laid back, even a little detached. Dunks are too agro for that. The finger-roll takes a lot of practice while looking like something you're doing without too much effort.

George Gervin's finger roll was the final unstoppable move by a gifted offensive player. Double-teams and weak-side helpers were often thwarted by his deft movement of the ball. The floater is the small guys go-to now. It mimics Ice's space creating move with almost similar results in the paint.
