- Brian Chippendale is a musician and artist based in Providence, Rhode Island. He is best known as the drummer/vocalist for the band Lightning Bolt. He was a member of Fort Thunder, an abandoned, pre-Civil War textile factory in Providence, Rhode Island known as a work-space for local, avant-garde artists. In addition, he engages in a wide variety of the arts including playing in a solo project called Black Pus, drawing comics, sculpture, painting, printmaking and collage.
I'm so happy people like this exist.
Oh yes
Amen! 🙏🙌
He's such a down to earth dude which kinda surprised me considering how hectic his music and art is. I was sorta expecting a person with borderline psychosis.
+themagicbadgerman
Maybe he would be psychotic if he didn't make his hectic art!
@@haamunaama6071 you know whats up
Aatu Yli-Rahko lol in the Lightning Bolt documentary he talked about having to finish off an injured rabbit with a sledgehammer

"I feel like I lived my whole life rewarded for bad behavior."
What a bamf.
An artist can't have that much junk everywhere without having some discipline. Brian is the master of his crazy collage juggernaut, the mind behind this visual turbulence that looks just a bit scary. Like Jeremy's higgledy-piggledy bedroom in the comic strip "ZITS." Brian's mother likely never taught him to put his toys away. Francis Bacon, a very famous artist, always kept his studio space in a state of total chaos.
Noe Berengena
You call it discipline, everyone else calls it ADHD
You can have both.....like me :)
@@Glass_Caskets There is some truth in what you write. I once lived with a friend who was a hoarder, with piles of stuff everywhere. I thought he had a problem with focusing on one thing -- that and being a procrastinator. All those things are connected.
From the pics and videos I've seen Brian doesn't look fucking 40, I've always imagined him being in his 20's.
2:57 Imagine if he won that 50/50. Then we wouldn’t have Lightning Bolt at all, crazy how small things predict a lot of your future
When I grow up i wanna be a manchild just like him
Never growing up is the key
Sometimes just doing what you want will eventually lead to breaking somebody's heart. Sometimes life just falls in place that way, and you're free. But for some people like me, it requires many years of hard work and pushing against a pile of bad luck, to keep things good.
i know your comment is four years old but it's incredibly relevant right now. cheers
That fort thunder place seems like the coolest place ever and this guys art is absolutely brilliant.
It was absolutely beautiful and inspiring...
@@JonathanCr0ss I was so pissed when I found on Wikipedia that Fort Thunder was demolished to build a parking lot. The two stores it was meant to service went out of business soon after, which I like to imagine was some sort of higher power taking its revenge.
NoEsUnUA-camr duuuuudeeee wtfff
@@drpibisback7680 just watched this vid, thought natch building wont be there, not in 21st, C, sad not unexpected, but he did say, feel Lucky all my life ive been rewarded for bad behavior..!! amazing stuff...where is he now
the suburbs couldnt take him in....
holy shit Fort Thunder was a Mecca back then. during the peak of Providence’s Noise and instrumental scene (which was in its golden age)
Its like a punk rock bread and puppet museum
YES IT IS EXACTLY
from glover to providence :)
“Everyone is looking right, and I’m looking left, and I’m not really trying”. I just found you, your music and your art today 12.07.2019 @118pm CDT. I dunno how I got here but wow, I’m sure glad I did. What a breath of fresh air.
This is what I wanna do with my life.

i’m gonna be honest he’s kind of dreamy. if you catch me in a wig and high heels in the new york area please just mind your own business because i will have things to do
LMAO
He has a daughter though
He has a son and a wife but that doesn’t mean we can’t talk about how attractive he is
This guy is a legend of our time
"Noise Rock" was a term that long pre-dated the emergence of Brian's band, Lightning Bolt -- going back to the late '70s
Holy shit this is like, the 90s personafied
Wonderful...keep on keeping on!
This guy is and his band is about the only cool thing iv'e found on youtube for ages.
I love Brian Chippendale. I still get the feeling he's an "explosion looking for somewhere to happen".
His time, and Brian Gibson's, will come. I know. 🤗😊♥️
Love you people.
one of my favorite drummers/artist/whatever ever.
Brian Chippendale is a gem who must be protected at all costs.
You'll be alright mate. Just keep doing things which make you feel good, and surround yourself with people who make you want to be alive.
i dont think anyone should ever try to put labels onto music like that. noise rock this, prog-avant that, it makes it feel like nothing can be all or anything at once. lightning bolt is lightning bolt, hella is hella, black midi is black midi, and i think maybe labels is less for molding what the music is rather than for easy categorization if you want similar things. in the end everything is its own little thing and that makes it feel like everything is in its own world
met in north England right after gig after he whipped his undies off, told him how I found LB, in a tiny 2cm column in Mojo magazine and tracked them down,. the energy xxx....he was the sweetest politest guy give me 2 mts of his time, and post gig...what are they doing now? UK?
goals
I love you Chippy
Hes a sick drummer, and a highly intelligent visual artist.
But my god how he sets his drums up destroys me.
Holy shit, I had been to that Flea Market to buy salvia and saw into that space and was like "wtf is *this* ???"
Great guy!
he`s creating a great basement
Fort Thunder sounds so cool, i wanna visit
Really love his art. Fuckin breakbeat at the end as well. Groovy dude.
I've never met someone who didn't like brian. He's an awesome down To earth guy
Nice last name.
art metal is probably the best label i've heard to describe them, would lvoe to hear brian playing in his style in a death metal band or something lol.
if someone can trigger me into suicide its him.. because he is like me, and i guess like many of you, but he just believes in it continiously and keeps on doing that stuff without ever reflecting too long.. i doodled too it looked like this, i drum too but i sometimes suffer from exhaustion.. i never had the other brain though.. yet i kinda have a besty childhood friend looking exactly like him but he doesnt play bass and lives over the ocean.
Finally a chippendale video I can show my 2 year old
i need some of your art work to hang in my flat
Grave City,,, Stickmen with Rayguns
So he did their EP cover art? If so that’s pretty far out
His place looks like pretty much every loft I’ve been to in Philly.
Would love to visit one, seems so interesting
Atlas carrying the world, except loves the world too much to say fuck it.
legit genius
the old days in Providence sitting in front of his kick drum getting pummeled on a floor i sure as shit shouldn’t be sitting on. Favorite spot, 3 quarter view, hi hat side. i’ve never seen them play for more than a 5$ cover. mostly free shows. Hanging off a fire escape in an alley they were playing while the sounds bounce off of brick walls might be one of my favorite live music memories. we knew they were playing outside but they didn’t announce where. all of a sudden you hear those fucking drums, murdering physics like they do.
Thank you for making beautiful art. .

Ft. Thunder was evicted in 2001. No more Ft.Thunder.
He's somewhere else right now. He's a bit famous too so probably shouldn't disclose location.
Eno Eyes Bummer :( Seemed like an awesomely dysfunctional place to be
Chris gethard must be involved here somehow.
