Lightning Bolt - Ride the Sky (Insane Finale!!) 2130pm 4.9.22 11 years ago is like.........11 years ago. not ten. but 11!!! and i bet 11 years ago he was still saying: "i'm in charge" i bet he can still get anthea to give him a twirl.
As a metalhead who's been listening to a lot of noise rock lately, I must say these noise rock bands are infinitely times more heavy and violent than the most brutal extreme metal bands. I'm in love with Lightning Bolt and some of Throbbing Gristle's work at the moment, absolutely amazing stuff.
my guess is you would only hear brian's 3 blasts because that's what he's capable of while zach would play a different beat every 10 seconds but still you wouldn't hear any of that, just a loud noise
Of the two, Brian is the only one with a fixed template (bass drum-cymbal pounding). I really can't think of one thing Zach Hill always brings to the table. I love them both, but I consider Zach somewhat superior as an innovator. Brian is actually harder to replicate due to how goddamn relentless he is.
So true, at Austin this one girl was sexually assaulting everyone, grabbing dicks, grabbing tits, making out with random dudes, going crazy, throwing herself everywhere, and after the show I saw her getting yelled at, being dumped by her boyfriend 😅
Man I hope people will stop comparing Brian to Zach. Apples to oranges, ya know? they both got their own sweet, tangy delicious flavor of drums which nobody else can replicate that you go back and taste for different reasons. I see the why you would, but think bout it. It's citrus, but a different flavor.
The best way I can describe Lightning Bolt is, it's like one of those pictures that just looks like static and patterns, but if you look at it from just the right angle, it pops out at you and you see a masterpiece
I was at this gig, Sunn 0))) the day before too, hearing has never been the same since, insanely good performance, amazing end to an amazing festival, probably my favourite ever!
This video always makes me want to go buy a drum kit. Pretty sure I have a head start since I've been airdrummin' Chippendale and Zach Hill for years now.
If you have the place to put one and you don't have any family members that would object to you having it, I'd say do it. I don't think my neighbors would like me having a kit but one day when I move into a house I may get one. But yeah definitely do get one if you can.
i have to say that was fucking insane, as a drummer this guy is doin something iv never seen befor, i tried to figure out the beats he is doing, having the 2 snares and totaly different way of doing things with his kit set up which is also out of the norm for rock kit setups, but still he was doin shit there i got no idea how he was doing it, fucken tops stuff ill be at the next Australian gig front row \\m//
Lightning Bolt - Ride the Sky (Insane Finale!!) 1208PM 19.8.22 COOL... BEATS BEING HASSLED BY THE MAN FOR YER UMBRELLA... HEY!!! I WANT ONE... THAT KIND OF SHIT... AS FOR THE SONGS SOUNDING HOW YOU WANT THEM TO - REFER TO THE DEAF AID CULTURE.... MAYBE THE COMPOSITIONS WERE SET OUT BY DEAF FOLK.. ANYHOW; AS THE FAKE GRAMPA USED TO SAY: THE RED INDIAN WOMAN IS WRITING ALL THE SONGS...
This version of Ride the Sky, Colossus in Moscow, Dracula Mountain in Philadelphia, and Dead Cowboy Taicoclub are steadily becoming my favorite Lightning bolt videos. Hard to choose which is the greatest.
Just saw this for the first time and had a fucking huge grin on my face. It's even better than I remember it. It was freezing outside and I nearly died from heat exhaustion. Amazing.
I love your comment bro. Never seen before in my life and Ill be seeing them this December. It's probably the most excited I've been for a show in 2 years. Just listening to this sounds like liquid gold being funneled into my ear canal by Morgan Freeman while he gives me the mcsuckins of a lifetime.
watching this chokes me up for some reason. lightning bolt are fucking legends. few bands can set it off the way the way they can. maybe exhumed and the supremes.
I play like this (though I don't display quite the superhuman strength) and people are always asking if I'm a jazz drummer. I tell them no, I just really like Zach Hill.
I am very sure Chippendale studies Jazz. I get the impression he studies anything with drums in it, and Jazz is known for being like the go-to genre to study if you want to to understand your instruments. Regardless of what those instruments are. Beyond that I think he might have even said he really liked a certain Jazz drummer in their video they did at AMOEBA but don't quote me on that.
fucking nice transition into the crown of storms interlude i couldnt imagine a better finale to a bolt show. also this is by far the best collection of lighting bolt videos ive seen
I was in this crowd, (you can see me at various points) I remember it being almost 3am that they came on, there were no other bands on at the time so people were literally hanging off the roof beams to get a view. At no point during it was I stood on the ground, just other peoples body parts. It was the best weekend of my life, I wasn’t even trying to dance or mosh but I rang the sweat out of my clothes when it finished. I love this band
the women dancing at the front of the stage are actually from another band called Afrirampo. Brian invited them on stage in the song before to sing 13 monsters with them
Someone’s middle aged mom is in front row rockin out!

@konnichiwaneku I saw Lightning Bolt last month or something and No Age just 3 days ago... Lightning Bolt ripped my head off. No Age, I was yawning, man. It wouldn't be a fair show at all.
.....LOL I can see why Bjork wanted Chippendale to play drums of 2 of her albums; the tracks The Dull Flame Of Desire and Declare Independence Remix from Volta and the single Nattura from Biophilia deluxe edition.....
REALLY FUCK--- NUTS, but in a good way. I like them. It's always funny to see in one of these concerts the 2,3 or more people in the audience who have to be escorted out to the bathroom, or ER for some kinda OD or something. That goes without saying for a show like this. I hope he audience knew what they were in for, cuz you could really freak if you happened to eat too much french toast or something before the show. Cardigans are out too.
yeah me either they're kinda big now so i dont know if i'll ever see them like they were b4 in a small venue. They play big shows now and far from here. lol
haha... I don't like screamo / heavy metal. But I love this. Its hard to explain... Heavy Metal bands nowadays just don't have that fun energy that vibes from Lightning Bolt. Lightning Bolt doesn't try to be cool. They try to just have fun and act crazy every second.
its similar, but not the same. I asked about it recently and they told me they are doing a recording based on that middle section of Ride the Skies as a new song in 2010.
Lightning Bolt - Ride the Sky (Insane Finale!!) 2306pm 5.8.22 the wonder of fucked up muzak such as this is - what the eff would a cover version sound like...? not being overly aware of all of the lightning bolt's oeuvre i wonder if they have ever covered some of their fav tracks in this mad insane style... stairway to heaven as fucked up by this band might sound fucking amazing...
@theblahs now that you mention it, I agree. maybe LB and The Locust with Melt Banana opening. What do you think? By you I mean theblahs and anyone else who has an opinion on this :)

Joey Moto: I call Lighting Bolt's style "Rave Metal" 'cuz Chippendale's drumming sounds like a drum & bass drum machine
Ralph Richter Alright okay lmao
Same here.
Their stuff when played thru a PA is loud enough to rattle your ears.
God I love this group
P-Orridge was an evil monster.
Someone shouted "Wonderwall" at the start hahah
someone should put Brian Chippendale and Zach hill in a room together with their drumsets and just record it
my guess is you would only hear brian's 3 blasts because that's what he's capable of while zach would play a different beat every 10 seconds but still you wouldn't hear any of that, just a loud noise
Sebeusz Gałczyński Thats about the most absurd thing thats ever been said about Chippendale. Open your ears fool....
Anthony Mostacci and Greg Fox
Brian does have the tendency to hit his bass drum as fast as humanly possible. Not a criticism, just an observation.
Of the two, Brian is the only one with a fixed template (bass drum-cymbal pounding). I really can't think of one thing Zach Hill always brings to the table. I love them both, but I consider Zach somewhat superior as an innovator. Brian is actually harder to replicate due to how goddamn relentless he is.
this drummer is at the right gig
I love how totally nuts the crowds get at Lightning Bolt shows. So much crazy, whacked-out shit happens.
not in New Zealand! I got asked to stop dancing
Also not on Brutal Assault this year, unfortunately. People were just bobbing their heads (it didn't stop me from going batshit insane anyways).
So true, at Austin this one girl was sexually assaulting everyone, grabbing dicks, grabbing tits, making out with random dudes, going crazy, throwing herself everywhere, and after the show I saw her getting yelled at, being dumped by her boyfriend 😅

thanks dad
they’re both possessed by the same demon
The best way I can describe Lightning Bolt is, it's like one of those pictures that just looks like static and patterns, but if you look at it from just the right angle, it pops out at you and you see a masterpiece
I was just thinking to myself how badly I wish I could of been there. Then I realised I was there. Drugs :(
😂
I was at this gig, Sunn 0))) the day before too, hearing has never been the same since, insanely good performance, amazing end to an amazing festival, probably my favourite ever!
I’m 9 years late but Lightning Bolt and Sunn O))) in the same festival Jesus Christ you’re lucky
@@inaijik it was pretty good. if i remember rightly i had to pick between this and polvo that night. gutted they don't do these fests any more.
Lightning Bolt - Ride the Sky (Insane Finale!!) 2311pm 5.8.22 excellent!! those two stacia type dancers were nice...
ha, awesome
hope you take care of your ears now though
I cant believe I heard this song on the radio. So happy i had sound hound.
RazorHeadMetal On the radio? Wow
@@FrancescoGiorginiFilms probably on KXLU or something
blessed be that radio station.
This video always makes me want to go buy a drum kit. Pretty sure I have a head start since I've been airdrummin' Chippendale and Zach Hill for years now.

thresholdhouse lmao same
I get way too confident because i airdrum to these monsters all the time but it’s just hiding the fact I suck
Felt the same way, 2 months ago went and got the kit, no regrets. Do it!
Dwight Lee same here it's in my house waiting for its chance just jam in a studio atm
bro same tho
This was the wildest lightning bolt show I've ever seen. Last show I went to in NYC they ended with ride the sky as well. It was amazing.
i have to say that was fucking insane, as a drummer this guy is doin something iv never seen befor, i tried to figure out the beats he is doing, having the 2 snares and totaly different way of doing things with his kit set up which is also out of the norm for rock kit setups, but still he was doin shit there i got no idea how he was doing it, fucken tops stuff ill be at the next Australian gig front row \\m//
He's honestly one of the greatest drummers I've ever heard. He's just pure flow: constantly improvising in natural ways you wouldn't even suspect.
He put me up at fort thunder II when our band opened for him in 2007. I'll never forget. Pure genius.
Lightning Bolt - Ride the Sky (Insane Finale!!) 1208PM 19.8.22 COOL... BEATS BEING HASSLED BY THE MAN FOR YER UMBRELLA... HEY!!! I WANT ONE... THAT KIND OF SHIT... I listen to Don Cab, Hella, and these guys. They all have fantastic drummers and are all brilliant bands.
Lightning Bolt is like if unicorns could shit heavy metal.
12 years ago, this was uploaded two days after the show.
Trippy.
This made me be able to poop again
this might be the greatest video I've ever seen
This version of Ride the Sky, Colossus in Moscow, Dracula Mountain in Philadelphia, and Dead Cowboy Taicoclub are steadily becoming my favorite Lightning bolt videos. Hard to choose which is the greatest.
Watching this, only to realize its twelve past midnight, on a Monday morning...
The shows are always so goddamn lit
Just saw this for the first time and had a fucking huge grin on my face. It's even better than I remember it. It was freezing outside and I nearly died from heat exhaustion. Amazing.

@@TheDailyMeb you should be stoked
The hilarity when that chick suddenly dives into the audience
Which one? There are a handful of them that keep diving into the audience over and over again
watching this chokes me up for some reason. lightning bolt are fucking legends. few bands can set it off the way the way they can. maybe exhumed and the supremes.
his drumming is actually kinda jazzy
imagine it played softly on a higher tuned kit and yes it is. that was a very good observation
I play like this (though I don't display quite the superhuman strength) and people are always asking if I'm a jazz drummer. I tell them no, I just really like Zach Hill.
+Drillkicker
That makes a hell of a lotta sense when you think about it.
I am very sure Chippendale studies Jazz. Regardless of what those instruments are. Beyond that I think he might have even said he really liked a certain Jazz drummer in their video they did at AMOEBA but don't quote me on that.
im pretty sure he takes influence from jazz drummers
I hate the internet. Lightning bolt is pretty cool though.
Thanks for so many great years of shows Brians!!!!!
Once I can see these guys and Tobacco live, my life will be complete and I can die peacefully.
Hope it happened
Hey buddy hope ur dreams came true. I love tobacco also
LB drummer is FUCKIN BADASS!!!
Insane finale begins at 1:55
I wanna drink all our shared exitement over this performance as a giddy old feel good cocktail and dance this body away as it supposed to.
muy buen video, gracias por compartir, uno que no tiene la posibilidad de verlos, bueno
this show changed my life. so fucking good to see it again!!
Cant fucking wait to see these guys in Leeds November time...been waiting a long time for them to play the UK other than festivals.
+Mr5kull5trobe the brudenell? yeh im goin to that one man! last time I saw them i cdnt hear for a week, was fantastic
+Mr5kull5trobe I'll be there tonight!

I tried once to air-drum to this song. It's enough to say I'm writing this message with my feet.
Blows my mind everytime I watch this video.
gosh these guys are amazing
This makes me incredibly happy.
what kind of neck-bearded prog rock apprentice wizard thinks that women dancing is somehow detrimental to a show?
the women dancing at the front of the stage are actually from another band called Afrirampo. Brian invited them on stage in the song before to sing 13 monsters with them
Wow, I can't believe you remember me!!
I'm glad you filmed it, this is the best version of them at ATP I've found
Gooood memories .. All Yesterdays Parties ..
what a document!
favorite.
11/10 would relive again :)
dude, rad opinion. so stoked on it.
Never just throw out a t shirt you like, just b/c it has a few holes in it.
You keep that shirt until it erodes
I listen to that on phone speakers. I hear absolutly nothing. It's marvelous!
thank you! I was there and bloody well remember this trip!
Simplesmente sensacional !!!!!
It's crazy that many people like this band..jesus crazy..
I like that Brian guy
edit: i wish i could finish any show with that echo/delay/distortion/whatever of a final note. dang.
Great video! Loved it and loved the show. I don't there was any other way to end 10yr ATP other than lightning bolt. Thankyou for the upload.
Afrirampo spitting beer on everyone at the beginning... lol what a fucking lit ass show
afrirampo on stage!
Someone’s middle aged mom is in front row rockin out!
@konnichiwaneku I saw Lightning Bolt last month or something and No Age just 3 days ago... Lightning Bolt ripped my head off. No Age, I was yawning, man. It wouldn't be a fair show at all.
living on a mountain in forest sounds quite nice. Take your time with the uploads!
Thank you
They should have done the music for The Dark Knight Rises.
You're a big guy
Shitpost Cop ... For you.
@Jack655321 They're actually fellow Noise musicians Afrirampo that Lightning Bolt brought on earlier to do guest vocals for 13 Monsters.
Man that guy really knows how to drum

this band is becoming a favorite one
This song sounds like a much more powered version of The Faire Folk.
LB and No Age would be an awesome show!
they seem to understand the ancient music
and trad stuff so well, wonderful. love it.
I love the show long ago at Speak in Tongues, Cleveland, where they got shut down for being too loud.
You can imagine what the drum set looks like right now.
Is that Afririampo jumping into the crowd? If it is I am deeply jealous of everyone that was at that show.
You bet.
Subscribed. +1. Liked. Awesomeness deserves this kind of reward (Oh and now commented).
seizure meds...check
I have adhd and autism, this is how I feel.
I saw you film this!
2:03 Chippendale dance... soo funy.
haha... I don't like screamo / heavy metal. But I love this. Its hard to explain... Heavy Metal bands nowadays just don't have that fun energy that vibes from Lightning Bolt. Lightning Bolt doesn't try to be cool. They try to just have fun and act crazy every second.
Justin Hymer this isn’t metal! If it has a genre, it’s art rock. Just gonzo art rock.
That drummer has quite the stamina
"bunch of rich kids"
yeah, i am sure old man stanier is just rolling in it...
Lightning Bolt live show is a tutorial about how just one drummer and one bass can make more noise than a seven piece metal band!
its similar, but not the same. I asked about it recently and they told me they are doing a recording based on that middle section of Ride the Skies as a new song in 2010.
“Yeah, you know what fuck the tape for the last song I’m just gonna keep the mic in my mouth and hold it with my teeth”
Hahahahhahahaha, i seem me! The massively tall person stood at the front, brilliant.

In case anyone was wondering, yes, that is Afrirampo!
ride the sky
They aren’t together anymore. What Id do to see them live.
Start your own band and be three times as amazing as they are. That's what they would say.
Wait, they are still together. They're playing Austin Terrorfest. I hope I just made your day.
its not an immediate transition but itsdefinitly crown of storms 6 minutes in
@videochemist did you notice if he had a toe stopper and a kevlar strap instead of double chain?
Was this at fyf? i saw them there and this looks exactly like that but i'm not too sure
yeah Videochemist! 100000 views!!!
yeah Videochemist! 324000 views!!!

@beats1969 Well they are clearly skilled musicians even if it is loud. But maybe you cannot see it.
hey your video is on their myspace page.
oh my god

How do people hate this!
