Chippendale made the mask specifically to hold the microphone in place in front of his mouth since he's also the vocalist in Lightning Bolt. The sound is him, he's just looping his vocals and stuff, you're a million percent on the money (store)

Lightning Bolt is one of the sickest duos of the 00s and Sonic Citadel is great start

I'd start with Hypermagic Mountain, since it's the most representative of them while still having very catchy songs. I think Sonic Citadel is definitely astray from their regular formula
Check out Black Midi too if you’re on this noise kick. Their drummer is one of the best new musicians I can think of

Some insight on his setup, his vocals (telephone mic element in his mask) are going into a fuzz (to get it to be loud enough & occasionally get feedback) , going into a line 6 dl4 (used as a looper constantly utilizing half/double speed and restart functions). The bass drum has a sd coron drum synth strapped to it (triggering a sweeping synth sound when he kicks it & the pitch gets higher the harder he hits it) going into an overdrive (to make it gritty) then a wah(for filter sweeps), then another dl4 looper(not used on this song).
As for the improvisational aspect, while there is a good bit improv mixed in, this is a song he plays mostly the same every time (the end is improv). He has some older stuff with more instrumentation and some select tracks on more recent albums he doesn't play live, but he can faithfully re-create a lot of his tracks live.
i'm a big fan of Brians work, and was glad to see you have a positive reaction. I definitely listen to black pus & lightning bolt on the regular, usually full volume in my car. To my knowledge brian is friendly with zach, but hadn't heard of him when he started lightning bolt, and has been drumming like this forever. I cant say alot about his musical inspirations, but i know he listened to a lot of metal type stuff when he was younger & is into percussion driven stuff, noise rock, industrial, weird electronic & free jazz stuff along the lines of sun-ra. You should definitely check lightning bolt, as well as the documentary "checking in at 20" it will give a bit more insight to his work.
As for similar stuff, there isn't, but you would probably get a kick out of the drums / sounds behind MoHa, Big Lad, and possibly The Locust.

John Stainer of Battles! ( he's got a much simpler style In a way... but he beats the shit out of his kit) he plays like a drum machine and has one cymbal - a crash cymbal sitting a few feet above the kit lol

Black Pus is a performance artist. This reaction is absolutely priceless as it's about far more than just music, there's so much more going on than just a drummer and some fancy pedals. It's why I love it and keep coming back to watch it

As to the free jazz element, you're spot on. He cites Sun Ra as one of his biggest influences.
Definitely check out Lightning Bolt. I describe them as the musical equivalent of a couple of 8 year olds who just snorted a whole bag of Pixie Stix. They're so much fun. "Dracula Mountain" is a good entry point, imo.
Fun fact: Chippendale is a visual artist as well and played a set in one of his installations.

Yes Zach Hill has been influenced by Chippendale in some form
Zach is more technical but Chippendale can lay some unreal energy

I remember Spencer Seim of Hella saying they did their very first gig with Lightning Bolt and he was surprised that there was another band like that, wondering how many more exist.
Lightning Bolt started in 1994, Hella in 2001. Ride the Skies was out by the time Hella started.

There was a huge scene of crazy noise-rock bands including Lightning Bolt/Black Pus up in Rhode Island. They all lived together in some crazy art warehouse thing where they were all devoted to art.

Nudged for a Don Cab episode in Zach Hill comments, glad to see you like Brian - again, check out Don Caballero (there's an HQ live set from 2006, admittedly a chill one, chiller than albums and a doc on Damon on YT) - Damon Che is more 'melodic' than Zach and Brian, think if they sounded like Copeland a bit I guess? Not really but that's the only comparison that makes sense to me. You know, if Copeland played in a post-hardcore band.

Its cool that you made the zach hill connection. Chippendale, zach, and greg saunier are all born out of the early 2000's/late 90s noise rock scene so they're all cut from the same spastic drumming cloth. Interestingly enough, of the three, saunier's the only one with a formal music education (oberlin), but zach and brian both fall on sorta opposite ends in terms of complexity where zach is way more technical than brian, but brian's more explosive. All 3 have collabed with one another in some form (except brian and zach to my knowledge) in the 00s and their collective influence on the rock underground in the past 20 years reaches really freakin far.

Fellow Chippendale here. Please review some 'The Locust' or any of Gabe Serbian's drumming. The guy is a machine.
Haven’t seen it mentioned in the comments, so to explain; those lower notes are the result of an oscillator hooked up and mounted on the kick drum, which he does in Black Pus and sporadically busts out for Lightning Bolt. I’ve seen him upwards of 40 times between both acts, and I still haven’t really made sense of how the fuck he is controlling the note, and never bother to ask him because it’s like the least interesting thing you can talk to the guy about. A truly one of a kind musician and the nicest dude you’ll ever meet.

Chris Corsano is a great modern-day free jazz drummer that you would prob enjoy immensely. and seeing chippendale play in lightning bolt 5 feet away from you is almost a religious experience - some of my fav shows ever.

Also after referencing all the Downtown No Wave and Avant-garde Jazz there's no way around Weasel Walter! Really like his performance when he was with the CP Unit and those shows he did with guitarist Mary Halvorson and Trumpet player Peter Evans. Obvious choice would be his own project the Flying Luttenbachers.

Brian breaks everyone the first time they listen to his brain on drums haha “guitar” vocals at the beginning were popped onto the line six loop and he hits triggers to run those through some effect presets. Also the expression pedal. It’s an amazing live set. He’s super nice to his fans from my experiences
Lightning Bolt is legendary. See them live if you can, make sure you have a lot of energy and no valuables to lose / break, and push up to the front so that you can lose your mind and simultaneously hold back the crowd from all collapsing on top of the two Brian's.

I was literally watching this video earlier today, skipped around youtube to a bunch of other music stuff and came back around to find your review of this video by means of your review of Famine Wolf - BTBAM (which was an incredible breakdown btw!).
Anyways. I love what you're doing! It's so hard to show videos like this to people I know because the music is so far from anything mainstream or just so unlike anything they've heard it's just deemed 'weird' and dismissed or at least not appreciated as much as I hope it would be. It's really cool to see and hear your reaction to the weird stuff I love to listen to and it especially hits home to see a review someone flying as under the radar as Black Pus/Lightning Bolt/Brian Chippendale is. I can't express enough how wild the live shows are. Definitely check it out if you can.

Lightning Bolt lights my fuse, but I can't tolerate them for more than a few minutes or I'll I have a bad case of insomnia. Good analysis, Steve. I think you've got it.
I went through a few years listening to lightning bolt every night before I went to bed and every morning as soon as I woke up.
I think your description is perfect, your link with avantgarde also and your comparison with Pollock is perfect, Pollock also plays with structure/chaos . Although there is a lot of craftsmanship.

The highlight in my drumming career was opening up for Brian. I've seen him as many times as possible. Between Brian and Zach Hill, they are the reason I became a drummer. I'm glad you're vibing. Watch the power of salads and milkshakes. Being in the room during a lightning bolt show is almost spiritual how the crowd is just transformed into mutants. Brian and the bassist Brian are two of the nicest people I've ever had the ability to hang out with. Checkout another mutant collection out of Providence called Arab on Radar. There's tons of us mutants in basements making madness for the freaks of the world.
Lightning Bolt was one of the best shows I've ever seen.

This guy is from Rhode Island, and he is an artist first musician second. He uses his music to also expressart. His main band is Lightning Bolt (Highly recommend checking them out) and it's just him and another artist, who plays bass. The two of them together are chaotic and wonderful all at the same time. When asked what kind of genre the band is he responds with "Well some people call us noise rock or experimental noise. I always thought of our music as Art Metal". My favorite Lightning Bolt song is Dead Cowboy. It's so beautiful.

Seeing these guys live was unbelievable
I never got to see them in their heyday. Saw them a year ago and you can tell they don't have the same live energy, especially when they're forced to perform on a stage as opposed to the concert floor.
They're actually from Providence Rhode island, lotta killer bands like lightning bolt out there, one of my faves there is a no wave band called Arab on rabar, really neat stuff, a tonal guitar riffs, mathy drums, oddly dancable grooves at times as well

Crazy how prolific they have been like 2 albums and 2 eps in 2 years?? Wild! Also daughters is also an all time fav, saw em on tje YWGWYW tour in 2019 with show me the body and health. Close to the best show ive ever seen. A place to bury strangers takes that cake, go see em if u get a chance
the left foot is triggering a "play once" button on a line 6 DL4 looper pedal. the mask has a mouthpiece microphone stolen from a payphone. he uses a boss SD1 to get the signal hot enough for the looper, and the octave drop for that bass hit "bow" is achieved with the half-speed feature on the DL4.

Hey man, loved the earnest reaction to some crazy music. It is wild how Chippendale hits that quasi-spiritual experience that the jazz moment hangs in... because yeah it is some chaos, as well as music. I would imagine you're getting a lot of noise nerds throwing names on the pile, so let me add to that. Weasel Walter/Flying Luttenbachers have a more direct Albert Ayler thing than Lightning Bolt but equal them in brute force. You might also dig Damon Che/Don Caballero for an equally complex and urgent sound but with certainty and not calamity. Thanks for the great video.
This totally fucking rocks! This is one of the best reaction videos I've seen and your analysis is spot-on. Kudos to you for getting it! This is visceral, spontaneous jazz, arrhythmic and unconstrained but still directed. It is a song being created and played because it is joyful to do so. It is a celebration of ability and possibility. It is very avant garde and you are 100% correct: we *need* this. I can't wait until you watch some Lightning Bolt!

You should really make a video about Greg Saunier from Deerhoof I'm surprised you haven't done that yet. Love this video by the way you have an openness and an enthusiasm with music that is really fun to watch.
Lightning Bolt is a great live experience. Every time I've seen them I've walked away feeling energized. The feelings of the show are tribalistic and almost spiritual in a way. Similar to Jazz, I had to change the way I listened to music to really understand them. The bass guitar creates the landscape for the drums to dance across. The drums are the main voice in their music, while the vocals are used as a conductor to direct the soundscape and provide queuing to the bass guitarist (Brian Gibson). Lightning Bolt has actually commented in a interview that yes, their music sounds like chaos, but its structured and they don't tend to not improvise their live performances.
Brian Chippendale has an awesome freeform drumming project with Deerhoof’s drummer Greg Saunier that’s pretty wild. I’d also recommend checking out Ian Chang’s “Spiritual Leader” album, and Deantoni Parks’ “Technoself” album.
Two drummers that Zach Hill's and Brian Chippendale's styles are totally beholding to are Don Caballero's Damon Che and Turing Machine's Jerry Fuchs. Perhaps two of the most thrilling drummers of the last twenty years.
Goddamn thank you for giving it up to Che and Fuchs. Brandon Relf from Sleeping People is someone that is also up and coming. Incredible drummer.

Something to consider is that Lightning Bolt justifies their style as trying to just put "energy into form" with their playing. It sounds weird and hippy, but when you listen to their music you understand it. A lot of people (myself included) tend to think there might be some aspect, either artistically or technically, of it that's flying over your head. But when you listen to it and think really try to embrace the cliche' of just "experiencing" the work you get it. But instead of standing around with a wine glass talking about how it "deconstructs preconceived notions" you just want to fucking mosh.
Brian’s primary band Lightning Bolt formed in 1994, first release was a 45 in 1997 when Hisham Bharoocha was in the band (before or right as Black Dice formed), all RISD folks. Mindflayer and Black Pus Brian’s other projects are also sick. Brian is def an influence on Zach from Hella (who formed in 2001) and they know each other definitely. You should also check out Hisham, early Boredoms, Greg from Deerhoof, Tatsuya Yoshida/RUINS, Weasel Walter/Flying Luttenbachers, Pat Samson/US Maple, and Damon Che of Don Caballero!

A lot of your art analogies are not too far off, Chippendale is also a visual artist & makes some pretty wild comics. Having seen Lightning Bolt live, it has a dehgree of physicality that doesn't quite come through on a recording. This is something I've said about a lot of modern and contemporary art; Pollock or Judd don't work as a photo in a book.
Also; sometimes Chippendale uses an old set of drum triggers that don't work very well, which can add to the fun.
I seen Lightning Bolt live while on psychedelics and it was the most surreal and intense experience of my life.
So when you talk about "Getting outside of his body". Let me tell ya, I didn't know what limb was mine in that crowd.

You'd have to check out a live performance from lightning bolt - Brian's duo - that has been around since the 90's. Their shows are always something special, and I find that there is ever so slightly more coherence to the sound with the added "bass".
Definitely check him out in his main band Lightning Bolt. the experience with people involved gives it so much more context!

I love Lightning Bolt and Black Pus!! The best too concerts i'v ever seen her in Copenhagen DK is Lightning Bolt! Proper power! I spoke to him and he's a really nice guy. Down to earth. And a crazy produktiv visual artist.
