@@streeTkiDwannaBe Hydlide is a 40 year old game that predates even the NA release of the NES. Without it games like Zelda and the Y series wouldn't even exist. Hydlide is a big part of the reason ARPGs as a genre exist as they do today. People don't seem to understand just how ancient this game is. It was released in 1984 and predates even the first Dragon Warrior. The reason it has such a bad reputation in the west is it was released half a decade later here, after many of the more advanced games it inspired were already on the market. Of course Hydlide is going to look awful you have already played the better games it paved the way for such as Zelda. I don't think people who weren't alive back then have any clue how vast a gap five years in video game development was back in the early days. To put it in perspective, Hydlide was developed and originally released in Japan back when, here in the west, all we had was Atari games. It is an Atari era game. Sure, it doesn't hold up well now, or even back in the late 80s when it was released in the west, but it does not change the fact it was an important groundbreaking game in its day. It is just so much older than most people realize.
Cheers to VladlustTV, the editing makes it feel like a real return to form. Jared, if you ever bring on someone else as your editor again, I hope you consider them!
@Greg's Retro Video Games & More No one picked anything. It was a fixed choice. If the number was reached, he'd play hydlide. We didn't pick the game to be there. Jared did.
Yes a friend, the one you call on a Friday night because everyone else is busy and you know you’re not going to have a good time with them but it’s better than staring at the walls and slowly slipping into madness. Plus you can get them to buy you a pizza.
The montage music, the highs, the lows!! It was magical. Never thought I could have so much fun watching a man torture himself for our pleasure. Thank you, Jared! You beautiful bastard!
I wonder if the "Secret Characters" are the Hidden Fairies. Devs may have been playing fast n loose with the translation... And gameplay... And story... And yeah....
Does anyone here know Fairune? It's more of a Puzzle RPG where you find items to use them to solve puzzles and "battle" monsters (actually just run over them) of your level or slightly higher to gain exp and be able to battle stronger monsters. This game also did the thing of the "Looping Toroid World", where you exit at the top/left and come out at the bottom/right and vice versa. Fairune is much more enjoyable than Hydlide, despite both games sharing some similarities. It also helps there are more maps to explore, not just an overworld and an underworld, but also an entire lava world, a tower with many levels and a large cloudworld.
30:04 I don't understand how you can be at MAXIMUM STRENGTH and you're still being chewed up like a piece of taffy by the enemies there. The scaling in this game is atrocious even for the time period.
I really hope he plays this one someday. Hydlide 2 is the ultimate Hydlide challenge, it's harder than Hydlide 1 and 3 combined, no joke. One of the hardest games I've ever beaten. The required amount of grinding is insane (again, much more than 1 and 3) and you always feel underpowered. Even after grinding to the maximum stats, most enemies may still kill you in a matter of seconds. It's even more cryptic than the other two games, not to mention you can basically softlock the game if you use some specific items in wrong places. The MSX version is available in English and it has some useful bugs (for example, when you start the game, before you buy any items or equipment, keep killing the ghoul enemies in the graveyard until one drops a black crystal, take it, enter the shop and try selling an item you don't have (from an empty inventory space) while holding the black crystal and you'll earn 30000 gold) but still hard as hell nonetheless, you'll need waaaay more than just 30000 gold to beat this game. The original PC-88 version seems to be a bit easier but it has no in-game music, although the graphics and gameplay are way better than the MSX one. It's probably the best version (well... "best" isn't probably the right word) but it's in Japanese only, and since it's a pain to emulate, he should just play the MSX one instead. But again, this game is absolutely unforgiving. I don't hate it though, but that's just because I love archaic computer games so I'm already used to most of the issues I've mentioned, so I ended up liking the Hydlide games. I would certainly hate them otherwise.
This was a lot of fun. So glad I and so many others in chat were with Jared in his endeavor to give helpful advice and encouragement. Like kill the rock. ;)
Jared!!!!! I think this was one of my favorite videos you’ve done. Your facial reactions with each “death count” equate to a “chefs kiss” for me. You made Hydelide entertaining (a feat for sure!) and i loved the adorable dance breakdown to the inescapable brain-imploding OST. And your video editor is amazing too. 😍

"A smart man would continue to fight slimes."
A smart man wouldn't play Hydlide.
Though he had no choice sadly
@jocaguz18 From where i'm from a thousand dollars is enough to cover my expenses for TWO whole months

The idea of putting 80s style training montage music over the grinding bits is gold.
Agreed, any idea what it’s called? If anything?
Yeah. What's it called again?
The song is "neon training"

"Hidden characters" probably refers to the 3 fairies that are hidden around the game that you have to find.
True!
Jared: "I hate this! It is revolting!"
Hydlide: "More?"
Jared: "Please"
Nice Star Trek reference 😁👍
There's a spiritual successor to Hydlide, a series called Fairune... basically the same mechanics, but it's actually a GOOD game.

Jim the knight d&d 5e build.
