I was born in the 2000s, but watching ProJared's videos genuinely feels like getting transported to the decades before me. Thanks for giving us the opportunity to experience an era that some of us missed out on.
There is a real existential gloom to the fact that the whole thing just repeats... 'Secret Island of Dr. Q' is like the 'Waiting for Godot' of 90s edutainment titles!
***** That completely ridiculous you know. Something that is considered a 'long time' is only considered that because it is a relative term. Long is a subjective word. A 20 minute walk is nothing to most people but to a mayfly that only lives 30 minutes that's 2/3 of his life. It is a big deal. When things are made relative to the situation they are then placed into perspective. If you measured your life in light years and estimates on how long the universe has existed, than yeah, it wouldn't be a long time, but we as human beings don't do that. We count the minutes, we count the seconds, we have to be at work at 6 am on the dime or we get fired. There is nothing within out lives that makes the length of time the universe has existed in anyway significant or relevant to our every day lives, thus its not relevant. Because the word long is subjective, 20 years is a long time to a human being no matter how long the universe existed. We humans see it as long and thus it is. I'm not sure what entity would consider it "nothing', but its certainly not a human.
I had the most awesome 3rd grade teacher . He had 28 computers , one for every student. Every single day for one whole year we got to play educational games for 2 hours.
muscularmouse Depending on the game, and the teacher, educational games could actually end up teaching kids more than they would learn in school alone. It's really a matter of finding the right game at the right difficulty level.
Ian Knight Yeah, but I'm pretty sure that after 1 year, it wouldn't be educational anymore, and rather just routine. The way I see it, the teacher was just being lazy and didn't want to teach.
muscularmouse If you look at the original poster's comment, it was only for 2 hours a day. The rest of the day would be spent with normal lessons, so they likely used the games as supplemental learning to help the kids learn easier. Also, there are many educational games out there. The teacher could increase the difficulty level throughout the year to keep the students challenged, and could change the game to match whatever lesson they were teaching at the time.
@muscularmouse I'd rather do lazy computer work over lazy paperwork any day, computer games would definitely be more engaging instead of a test or homework
Speaking of Monkey Island, I just realized that "The Secret Island of Dr. Quandary" is a similar title to "The Secret of Monkey Island" (the game with Guybrush in it). Conspiracy nuts, have at it.
Just so you know, Jared, the puzzle with the boat, door and candle where you have to rebuild them is a puzzle type called a "Tangram". They're a lot of fun and pretty easy to find once you know the word, so in case you didn't, now you can play those kinds of puzzles whenever.
This was my absolute FAVORITE game to play in Computer Lab as a kid in elementary school. Nobody that I know that didn't go to my school knows about this game, I can't believe you reviewed it!
***** Just remember that the kids in elementary now are facing a school system that's been getting worse every year. They probably don't have educational games allowed in some schools because they're too busy giving them standardized tests.
Oh god this game. I remember this game. Was actually pretty horrified by this a lot as a kid among other games similar to it and was sadly forced to experience the horrors of them at school. Such a great childhood.
Oh god I remember playing this on the old machintoches as a kid in school. The story was disturbing as heck. I always went with the easy one because it looked cooler. I didn't even notice the names and that they were different difficulties.
The solution of the CD puzzle is (N+1). N is the maximum you can take. (N+1)+1 is your winning number. (N+1) is your increment. For example if you can take maximum 3. "5" will be your winning number, "4" will be your increment. In order to get to 5, you need 5 + 4 = 9. "9" is your key number to get to "5". Next key number would be "13", and so on and so forth. The number of disk you should left to her should be 21, 17, 13, 9, 5... and so on. Always do it in (N+1) reduction.

"Secret Island of Doctor Quandry was the educational game I played the most growing up, while everyone else was knee-deep in Math Blaster or Reader Rabbit," You totally missed the opportunity to say "While everyone else was Knee-Deep in the Dead, Playing DOOM and such," EDIT: I have now realized that you were talking about educational games, and not DOS games in general. The first couple of times I watched this, I thought Jared gave the tax collector a lisp on his own, but I noticed that they actually replace the Ls in dialogue with Ws!
I KNOW THAT DISC-APPEAR PUZZLE FROM CYBERCHASE! You're suppose to keep the opponent with discs that are multiples of four! That way, when it's their second-to-last turn, whether they take 1, 2, or 3 discs, you can take what's leftover and leave them with the last disc!
I love how the entire video while he was complaining that the game was hard, he didn't realize that he chose the doll that clearly means he chose the hardest setting.... I didn't even play the game and I knew that XD
He knew lol, right off when he read the name he said "I see what you did there." He just played it up because hey, seeing youtube gamers fail is funny for us to watch.
I was always one of those weird kids who, in their spare time, looked up math formulas and terms on the internet and studied our textbook for FUN. But hey, it got me into special privileges, shiny medals, GATE (A high-level education program), and high test scores, so I'm not complaining. I'm not bragging, I think I should have built somewhat more of a social life, this is just what I actually do in my spare time. On a different note, our school never had us play educational games. "We are not here to have fun" (2nd grade teacher, or maybe 3rd, I forget which) So, yeah. That's kinda how our schedule went.
