That's supposed to be the third Ace wig; rumor has it that Chris pinched the original one from Dimension Jump, and they used a close copy for Emohawk. Not a bad look, but I get your point about the Light-Bee remote changing everything but the hair.
If it puts your mind at ease about Rimmer’s fate, there was a deleted scene in which the new Ace Rimmer reveals his origins to Lister. In his dimension the divergent point was fairly recent, from Lister's viewpoint. He stole the Time Drive on the Gemini 12 and left his crew for dead. He wound up in Napoleonic times, hiding as a woman in a dress and working in a florists to avoid conscription. The prior Ace approached him to pass on the flame. He uses it as an example of how they "all start out as caterpillars and end up butterflies". So it’s plausible this Rimmer became as awesome as his predecessors.
This is one of those episodes, like the heart warming ones from Futurama. It's silly, but it hits you with emotions unexpectedly. When they gave "Rimmer" a hero's burial in space, then when they saw all of the other Aces who have died, that is when the emotions kick in. But because it is Red Dwarf, there has to be the funny bit with the ejector seat to bring it back to the absurd. Great comedy show! The show Barney Miller was a well written show too. It had real emotional weight to their episodes mixed with unexpected comedy.
I won't lie my my first thought after this is episode was, how many people will wish he didn't attempt to save them? he probably got the hang of it later but the first few times must of been epic failures.
It probably wouldn't work too well as nirvanah is still a soft light hologram so unless Rimmer knows how to make a hard light bee they wouldn't be able to be together.
I don't usually do this, but I'd like to recommend "The Ace Chronicles" by cazflibs as excellent idea of where Rimmer went after he became Ace. It's an eeeexcellent fic about how the RImmeryist Rimmer became the Aceyist Ace.
Yeah I cried when I first watched this episode. What of it, I was 11. And yeah I cried when I watched this episode again a couple months ago. What of it, it’s great!
I love the development of Rimmer in the original 7 seasons. It's a shame they've pretty much ignored it for the new seasons. I hope they bring Ace back at some point and reveal what happened to the original Rimmer and the resurrected one for him to end up a hologram again.
Good review as always, personally i think it's frustrating that they give Rimmer occasional moments of bravery and comradeship with Lister and then have him be a total bastard again the next episode. I mean i know that's where the comedy is and i don't want him to be totally changed but why give us these moments if they never have any lasting consequence.
Considering how Rimmer remembers stuff from the first seasons, I think the Rimmer we get from season 9 onwards is Holo-Rimmer and not Nano-Rimmer. Maybe he came back to help at the end of season 8 and gave up being Ace, or made the Nano-Rimmer the new Ace.
My theory is still that Rimmer died in Season 8 and was brought back as a hologram again with the memories of both versions. It'd be pretty lame if he just stopped being Ace after all the build-up in this episode.
I understand your point of view, but on the other hand, Nano-Rimmer didn't have the same bond Holo-Rimmer did with the others through years of adventures. I kinda wish he was the Holo-Rimmer who came back. Kryten does mention in XI and XII that Rimmer died twice, which could either be the first time he died and when he died again on "Timeslides" or when he died on "Only the Good". I wonder if the creators will ever explain it. On the other hand there was an interview were they explained that Rimmer ages in the latter season but not when he was in Rimmerworld because since he was created to keep Lister sane, it would be very depressing for Lister if he never aged, so he's aging at the same rate Lister does.
@@sofiamatos8297 I would like to believe it is "Composite Rimmer." When this Rimmer died (Nano) The ship would store his data on top of "Holo Rimmer" Fusing the two files into one. Composite Rimmer would have "Memories" of Ace but would view it all as some sort of dream or fantasy. He would have the potential to become ace but not the will. Just a idea.
Personally I think we know rimmer’s fate as with each repeat watch a new Ace Rimmer is made basically creating a loop of ace Rimmer dying and turning Rimmer into Ace Rimmer
There is nothing I could say that could butter you up in the way I would like, get on that piece of toast you lovely muffin! Thanks for the new vlog :)
So I’ve just thought of a pretty big plot hole. Ace is supposed to be a hard light hologram, which were established in Legion to be invulnerable but a gun bullet is able to penetrate it and hit his light Bee but again in Legion, only Rimmer himself was able to get to the Bee.
I think the holograms themselves are mostly invulnerable but force can be transfered through them and that can damage the core. I think in another episode he jumps on a grenade and they are concerned that it could have damaged his light bee.
The nanobotically resurrected Rimmer or this one, I still wonder which Rimmer we’re watching now... I REALLY hope we find out in series twelve, probably the last episode, Skipper. Although it has been confirmed that the name Skipper hasn’t got anything to do with Lister’s nickname but I’m still hopeful. I honestly hope that it is the original, I mean he does have the memories but there’s not explanation, so far, explaining when/how he got back...
Actually it's confirmed that the Rimmer in BTE-12 is original Rimmer he came back to save the crew when the ship was falling apart and tricked the rebuilt Rimmer to take over as Ace
I think Doug Naylor confirmed it at some point but it does make sense that BTE-12 Rimmer is original as he makes reference to the radiation leak killing him in The End but never brings up anything S8 related ever he also makes a couple Space Corps Directive jokes in BTE and apparently will make one in M-Corp also in Dear Dave he talks about his long servitude which includes the years leading up to S7
My theory is just that S8 Rimmer died and was brought back as a hologram who was given the memories of the earlier hologram Rimmer up to the point before he left. They made such a big production out of his becoming Ace that it'd be pretty lame if he just went back to being Rimmer after that.
Believe your own theory maybe when you get to BTE mention all the fan theories for how Rimmer became a hologram again Also when you get to Oroboros could you maybe mention the Kotchanski Inquisitor theory that explains why Chloe Annette's version of her is so different to the Clair Grogan one
I had a few problems with this, aside from the fact that it took Rimmer off the show. The biggest problem I had is that it isn't revealed until about halfway through that Ace Rimmer is not the same Ace they met before and that he is a hard-light hologram. Yet earlier, the other three ask him how he has been doing and he explains it to them, and doesn't seem to drop any hints. Secondly, only Lister knew about this, and Kryten and Cat didn't. I did, however, like how they sent him off, because for all intents and purposes, even though they had their differences, Rimmer can be considered a good friend of theirs. Everyone has their own personalities. Another big problem I had with this is through most of the series, Rimmer wanted to make more of himself. Even in Dimension Jump, when he first meets Ace, he says that Ace is living proof of what he could have accomplished. I would think that if Ace wanted Rimmer to take over for him, Rimmer would be overjoyed for the simple fact that this would be his only chance of making a name for himself and feeling that his parents would be proud of him, instead of Rimmer acting like a complete git and somewhat of a sooky baby. Also, it isn't stated in your review that when Rimmer was fighting the knight, he was holding the sword backwards. Also, when Lister told Cat and Kryten that the knight escaped from the AR machine, nobody asks him how the knight was able to do that. I have to state that even though it is a good "send-off" episode for Rimmer, I really give a marginal non-recommendation to it based on the above-mentioned problems.
I can tell you, the film crew had a hell of a time trying to film the sequence of the knight suddenly riding the Donkey. As the actor not only kept falling off when it was moving, but also struggled to keep it running in a straight line.
Rimmer's character development is always edging slightly more towards outright heroism, so this was a fitting and pretty touching send off for him. A few things about it bothered me, though. Mainly the idea that all Rimmers are destined to become Ace. It's pretty much the opposite of Dimension Jump, where small changes in personal experience can make huge, irreconcilable differences to how you turn out. I don't know, maybe I just don't like where characters are pushed to do things against their nature with "You have to do this... because DESTINY". It also seemed really out of character for Lister to lie about Rimmer's death. Even if Kryten and Cat would theoretically be more saddened by Ace's death than Rimmer's, it's grossly manipulative and unethical to lie about this, especially when he does it for literally no reason. As far as I know they never found out the truth. Bizarre. (Though it's heavily implied the new series Rimmer is the original, so maybe they had that extremely scarring and difficult conversation off-screen?) But wait, can holograms even properly die? Just restore them onto a new light bee from a backup! ... there are still backups, right? I get the impression the whole "Red Dwarf can sustain just one hologram at a time, from a library of former crewmembers" thing is a detail the show wants us to forget about in the Starbug era. XD
personally this is when the series goes down hill for me rimmer is gone for a season Kochanski was just not funny and a poor replacement for rimmer as well as having no chemistry with lister and they bring back the dead crew itch takes way from the whole last human alive thing and takes away the whole more than the sum of there parts angle they had been working and there all back to there social reject position but now actually being too qualified to be there
Yeah, I'm not a big fan of Season 8 for the reasons you mentioned, tho I do think it has its moments and is generally funny. It really kills their character development, tho. For me, it gets better again after that, tho.

I remember the scene of Ace's Funeral Monument but it has gotten to the point where I can't help myself but cry my eyes out when I see it
I won't lie my my first thought after this is episode was, how many people will wish he didn't attempt to save them? he probably got the hang of it later but the first few times must of been epic failures.
I like to think the first thing Rimmer did after leaving was to find the Holoship and reunite with Nirvana Crane.
It probably wouldn't work too well as nirvanah is still a soft light hologram so unless Rimmer knows how to make a hard light bee they wouldn't be able to be together.
@@whovianhistorybuff Couldn’t he turn off hard light mode for himself?
I don't usually do this, but I'd like to recommend "The Ace Chronicles" by cazflibs as excellent idea of where Rimmer went after he became Ace. It's an eeeexcellent fic about how the RImmeryist Rimmer became the Aceyist Ace.
P.S. This recommendation is coming from someone who liked the original Ace about as much as Arnold J. did.
Sounds interesting.
Yeah I cried when I first watched this episode. What of it, I was 11.
And yeah I cried when I watched this episode again a couple months ago. What of it, it’s great!
Thanks!
Thanks so much!
I'm my opinion season 1-7 rimmer is still ace and season 8 rimmer is the rimmer from back to earth and the rest of the show
Mine too 👍
You kept saying 'Back on Red Dwarf' when it's actually Starbug. Good review of the episode.
Yeah, I somehow missed that.
Stoke me a clipper, I'll be back for Christmas!
Yeah, I gotta say, I'm not a huge fan of all of Season 7, but when it wants to, man can it hit you in the feels.
1:50 about theses 2 actors i learned that they are famous german comedians which i think is really cool that they both had a cameo in this episode :)
I hope we see Ace Rimmer again.
Was eins Kauz! 😂😂
this episode got me thinking if The femal version of rimmer became a varient of Ace
I felt that that shot of the Ace Rimmer cemetery would not be topped until Order of the Stick's world cemetery.
0:28 can somebody PLEASE tell me where i can get that poster ?
Just seen the ad for the new TV special, is it too much to ask for the return of ace?
I have trouble imagining a 60-year-old Ace. I'd rather just leave him in the past.
@@Cyborcat maybe so, I suppose sometimes it's just better to be thankful that he exists at all, I'm just glad it's returning
Probably something to be said for how much Lister does to get Rimmer to realize his potential here.
Personally I think we know rimmer’s fate as with each repeat watch a new Ace Rimmer is made basically creating a loop of ace Rimmer dying and turning Rimmer into Ace Rimmer
Another episode I really love. :)
Maybe Ace’s hologram had different technology to Rimmer’s.
Where is that confirmed?
Believe your own theory maybe when you get to BTE mention all the fan theories for how Rimmer became a hologram again
Also when you get to Oroboros could you maybe mention the Kotchanski Inquisitor theory that explains why Chloe Annette's version of her is so different to the Clair Grogan one
Ace can fly anything
Ace: kind funny altogether great guy but a bit vain
Rimmer: a pain.
What a guy.
Realise how in the earlier seasons lister mocks/does rimmers salute wrong but at his send off did it right
Good point.
What a guy.
It's not a new theme it's the same theme from the crawl of season 3.
It's HIS new theme song, as his previous one was different.
I can tell you, the film crew had a hell of a time trying to film the sequence of the knight suddenly riding the Donkey. As the actor not only kept falling off when it was moving, but also struggled to keep it running in a straight line.
Yep, I remember that from the outtakes.
Late to the Show but Princess Bonjella is named after a mouth ulser cream
Tube of bonjella gum ointment was mentioned in Series 3 "Marooned".
A touching funeral for one of the main characters and launching the coffin from the ship, that's got to be a reference to Star Trek Wrath of Khan.
I hadn't thought of that, but good point.
in s8 that was r
I literally said in the video that he comes back in Season 8.
@@Cyborcat never knew that i saw can't smeg won't smeg on ot was gob smacked when rimer cane back
Smoke me a Kipper!!!!
Bizarre. (Though it's heavily implied the new series Rimmer is the original, so maybe they had that extremely scarring and difficult conversation off-screen?)
But wait, can holograms even properly die? Just restore them onto a new light bee from a backup! ... there are still backups, right? I get the impression the whole "Red Dwarf can sustain just one hologram at a time, from a library of former crewmembers" thing is a detail the show wants us to forget about in the Starbug era. XD
There probably were backups . . . on Red Dwarf itself, not Starbug.
personally this is when the series goes down hill for me rimmer is gone for a season Kochanski was just not funny and a poor replacement for rimmer as well as having no chemistry with lister and they bring back the dead crew itch takes way from the whole last human alive thing and takes away the whole more than the sum of there parts angle they had been working and there all back to there social reject position but now actually being too qualified to be there
Yeah, I'm not a big fan of Season 8 for the reasons you mentioned, tho I do think it has its moments and is generally funny. It really kills their character development, tho.
For me, it gets better again after that, tho.
His catch phrase is "smoke me a Kipper, I'll be back for breakfast". A Kipper is a small salty fish the Brits eat
But that's not the name of the episode, nor what Rimmer says at the end.
I love when people try to correct me when they apparently didn't even pay attention.
Stoke me a clipper, I'll be back for christmas
Actually it’s smoked, not salty.
Umm sMoke i/o sToke me a kipper, I believe is the saying.
The whole joke is that Rimmer is saying it wrong. It's right in the title.
Oh ok, I didn't get that.Fair enough, thanks :)
(I thought I replied already?) Fair enough, thanks :)
No one likes the scouse accent lets be honest
Aww, I think it's cute.
I adore the scouse accent.
My head canon is that the queen in that game is actually made by some ozie who knew susan walker.
You know Susan Walker?
APPARENTLY
