    The "we've killed Wallace and Gromit" line is my favourite. Americans might not get it because there are no official 'Christmas special' W&G eps, it's just tradition to always show one on BBC1 on Xmas day for some reason.

    The first time I saw the "Jesus! ...Yes?" bit, I was in hysterics.
    A bit of a shame I first saw it in the 'next time' ad that followed 'Fathers & Sons' - thus ruining the surprise when I watched the episode proper - but, still, a perfect comedic delivery.

    ...I think the authors were thinking of "Thomas" rather than "James"...
    Also, the 6th commandment in Hebrew says "murder" not simply "kill" -- and then the Torah goes on to elaborate what constitutes murder & what doesn't. Which is why we have the concept of "manslaughter vs. murder" in the West. :P
    Gotta put that PhD to use somehow!

    12:07 Not only that but Jesus from what I understand seemed like an understanding, open minded person who at least acknowledged that nobody's perfect and didn't hold it against them, makes me wonder how he'd feel about current issues now where certain people would use him to justify picking on people who are different.

    Leave it to Red Dwarf to take a plot as simple as "The boys are sent back in time and travel to India to get Lemons for Lemon Batteries" and turn it into a hilarious, yet deep look into both the positives and negatives of Christianity. This is easily one of their finest outings.
    And hey, it also proved the undeniable truth that Lemons are Awesome! So there is that.

    We don't have the loud evangelical type element of Christianity that the US has so there's less fuss when we take the piss. Our Christian fringe types just stand quietly outside abortion clinics or complain about same-sex kisses on TV shows. Less Westboro Baptists and more Ned Flanders.

    I would prefer to believe that Arnold was given the middle name Judas because his parents didn't like him. His duplicate in Me2 said as much and you can kind of see it in other episodes and the novels.
    I also think that maybe Rimmer was winding Lister up about his parents being Seventh Day Advent Hoppists, ( either that or Grant Naylor just strung some words together to give Rimmer some funny lines) because 7th Day Adventists don't worship on Sunday. Saturday is the 7th day in historical Judaism and Christianity and 7th Day Adventists believe that worship on Sunday is a go directly to hell kind of sin
    Also, just dropping the "e" from hope would not have been the only typo in the Bible to lead to SDAH, as the greatest virtue would have to have been changed from Love to Hop, and then the next entire chapter would have had to have all the Loves to Hop...thus, this was most probably a wind up.

    Yep, Christians are pretty fair game in the UK, and at certain parts of the year, our Facebook profiles are flooded with criticisms of their theft of most of the Pagan calendar. On the other hand, I understand "atheist" is basically a swearword in the States.
    On which note, I'm told certain JRPGs get higher age ratings up your way than over here because of their anti-theocratic themes; in Star Ocean 2, the final bosses all had their names changed from those of archangels to other random European-sounding names for that same reason. I usually name my pen-and-paper roleplaying characters after various archangels as a nod to that.

      Mandaeans and some Gnostics believe that Judas (or Jesus’ brother, Thomas) was crucified in Jesus’ place, while a choir of angels carried Jesus alive into heaven. Meanwhile, Muslims believe that God made a criminal look just like Jesus and allowed him to be crucified in Jesus’ place. God then let Jesus live a normal lifespan and die. He then brought Jesus to heaven where he waits for judgement day at God’s right hand.

    Kryten not knowing how to make a battery without lemons really doesn't fit his character, especially after his explanation at the end of how batteries work; considering how believably lax with logic the show usually is that's a big blunder for the suspension of disbelief for me somehow.

    The Church of Judas thing could be seen as a bit of a combination of the Gospel of Judas (A piece of literature from a Gnostic Cult that believed only some people have souls, and that Judas was the only member of Jesus's disciples who had a soul, and because of this Jesus asked him to turn him to be the one to give him up to the Romans, so that he could fulfill his destiny of dying for everyone's sins), and the Islamic Belief that Jesus actually survived his execution and went on to live a full life. So yeah it's not tht far off of what some people actually believe/believed at a given point in time.
    Personally I am more in the school that either Jesus as the son of God who died for our sins, or a crazy person who was murdered for giving good life advice. Take your pick.

  • @PassiveSmoking
    @PassiveSmoking 6 років тому +2

    Not so keen on this one. The whole premise ignores the fact that both Rimmer and Kryten have power supplies that lasted for months. Also their Jesus wasn’t very convincing
    Having said that it’s nice to see Lister is apparently giving education a go after all. As for Rimmer, I don’t think he cares so much about Shakespeare as he does about being the last custodian of human culture.

Crossed Europe and Arabia without any incident to arrive in India? I know this is a comedy and there are a lot of ridiculous scenarios but that little jump in time scale was too much to wear and I voted this one right down cos of it.

    The real Jesus is not a wimp !
    Mark 11:15-16-17-18
    And they come to Jerusalem: and Jesus went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves;
    And would not suffer that any man should carry any merchandise through the temple.
    And as he taught them, he said, "Is it not written: 'My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations'? But you have made it 'a den of robbers.'"
