Huh, I read read the uniform thing very differently. I always perceived it as using the vinyl texture and the alien rib-like structure of it (think Giger) to underline her synthetic nature
I've thought of that before, and it could be both. I just really like the idea of Red Dwarf poking fun at Star Trek's habit of making female uniforms tighter and/or more revealing by being really obvious about it.
Lister has said "God damn" before. In the episode Bodyswap, he says to Rimmer, "You're never borrowing my body again, that's for God damn sure!" Approximately how nerdy am I for remembering that?
Something that struck me about Rimmer's apparent cowardice was less about him simply having a big yellow streak up his spine, and more the tragedy of him not having anybody in his life that he cared about enough, nobody he would stick his neck out for. In seasons 6-8 however, we see both the original and his nanobot-restored counterpart become somebody who does indeed care enough about people around him. It's quite relatable, and I think we all find people we feel that way about eventually. His brother turning out the same way over the course of this episode was an interesting microcosm of that.
That's because both his parents treated him with contempt and his brothers bullied him, not exactly conducive to creating a loving caring person is it?
That photo at 12:34. When this episode aired, they ran a competition to get a signed photo - that one - signed by all 4 of the main cast. Amazingly, I won and Richard Naylor sent it to me a few days later. Since then, I have always loved this season. It has 1 of my favourite ever episodes in it. And that signed photo still makes me smile!
I started watching Red Dwarf half way through season 3 and was immediately hooked. As soon as i'd here the theme tune at 9pm on BBC 2 i would be so excited and no episode ever disappointed back then. I thought season 10 was a marked improvement on the previous series but seasons 3-6 will never be matched again #DwarferForever
I know some people who thought the overload face was a bit too tryhard but I personally didn't mind it. And the thing I noticed in this episode is that the hold music Lister gets stuck with is the exact same music used in the lift ride Lister and Rimmer take in one of the early episodes (forget which now and I'm too lazy to check) Also we never see exactly what becomes of the defunct simulant, she wasn't dead exactly they could've reprogrammed her to be friendly but we never see her again.
The part where they trick the simulant into thinking they'd changed coursed by leaning in unison was great - only Red Dwarf could even usr a joke like that.
I think rimmer is obviously more of a practical vocational person not a exam person. It seems odd that in the future they don't have different exam types for different learner types
Trojan is a really underrated episode. I think it's the best since Gunmen. A lot of the series X-XII episodes are underrated because the passage of time has elevated the Grant Naylor episodes to classic status in people's minds (and I'm also guilty of this) to the point where nothing they could do would ever compare favourably. But, I think if series X scripts had been shot in the 90s in place of series VII or VIII, these episodes would be as classic as any.
Series 10 is actually my favourite of all time and I grew up with the originals. Also, absolutely love that scene with Lister & Hitler when they jam in Series 12.
I totally saw that betrayal coming, I mean come on the boys from the dwarf don’t exactly have the best track record for befriending those crazy cyborgs do they.
Yes, I discovered Red Dwarf when it was first on Netflix in 2012/2013 (Can't remember) and while X wasn't on it, I watched in on the internet and I thought it was magnificent
Putting this out there. I think Rimmer's reaction to his brothers death was reasonable, considering what we know about how the older Rimmer boys treated him and how Howard treated Arnold for almost the entire time he was on the Trojan. Also, just a fan theory...perhaps this Howard was from a different dimension.
Series X truly was a 'return to form' for the Dwarfers. The bigger budget isn't even important, because it is the writing and spot-on acting that makes the show great. I was also glad they got rid of Kochanski. Chloe Annett is a fantastic actress, but she was completely wasted and should have been a different character, since people instinctively kept comparing her to Clare Grogan. Her character became a throw-away that went nowhere, plus the whole retcon of her and Dave having an actual relationship was just dumb. I think the writers realised this, hence why they went back to the basics, essentially hitting the 'reset' button. Albeit, I would have liked to see Holly return (either Norm or Hattie).
Man I remember laughing til I almost puked at the payoff for that moose joke, as usual with red dwarf it was the friggin' delivery that makes it amazing.
Considering the big revilation we're going to find out about Rimmer in the last episode of this season. This episode makes me wonder if the same goes for Howard Rimmer since he's just as bad as Rimmer.
I'm just going to put this out there now...I think in the very end, very last episode - no more Red Dwarf episode ever, Rimmer will more than redeem himself. There will be tears & cheers from all the fans. We shall see in the (hopefully very distant) future how this plays out.
The original Rimmer already did that in Stoke Me a Klipper though when he became Ace. I think every other Rimmer including the one after 9 is a different iteration
Also a bit of an editing fluff when Sim Crawford walks away to use the teleporter and they cut away a second too soon in the previous shot that in the shot after Crawford uses the teleporter you can still see a glimpse of her still walking towards the teleporter...
Usually the episode titles have some meaning. Not sure what the hidden meaning here was (maybe it’s Crawford being an insurgent but that’s a bit of a stretch...) Also I loved the “utter ****” line. It’s the delivery that really does it for me.
I love it when the simulant goes cross eyed for a second during Lister's rant. Its amazing how just one tiny gesture can give a very minor character so much more flavor, its the kind of reaction you'd expect a psychotic deranged android to have to Lister's behavior. I also like how it was a women, script writers don't allow women to do goofy things that might make them "conventionally" unattractive for a joke enough.
9:41 usb drives, werent they called "computer slugs" in series 5? I rewwtched this episode. Series 10 is easily the best since 6, if not somewhat better.
Possibly because he’s gotten older and his voice has changed. At least that’s the most likely reason. Plus, I think he thickened up his accent for Red Dwarf and isn’t able to do that anymore due to age. That’s my two cents on the matter.
I'm surprised that you didn't mention that during Howard's death scene you can hear a slowed down version of the Munchkin Song (A.K.A The Rimmer Experience song)
SfDebris just made a review of this episode just a few days ago so I was able to compare both review/vlog. Honestly, you win for the comparison from another episode and from not making any Rocky and Bullwinkle jokes.
Well, I assumed the antenna was added because there's a hole where the cord would have been, so it didn't look like it started out as a cordless phone. Unless your corded phones also had an antenna, which seems kind of excessive =P
