Emu's All Live Pink Windmill Show S1E2 (1984) - FULL EPISODE
Вставка
- Опубліковано 17 січ 2013
- The second episode from the first live series sees the Pink Windmill Kids building a wall in an attempt to keep out Grotbags - to the accompaniment of One Brick at a Time (from the musical Barnum). Her Great Greenness herself, meanwhile, is still not yet quite used to Robot Redford's "manner". Also, his head falls off at one point. Keep an eye out for that.
This episode was originally broadcast on Friday, 20th July, 1984, and the second musical interlude in Emu's Choice is Songs, originally by The Kids from Fame. There's all the usual segments such as the Post Office, and in a significant first, Prince Poorly (played by Michael Barrington) drops in to visit his cousins in Boggle's Kingdom in an episode that in all fairness goes on slightly too long.
To be frank, whereas the plots of predecessor Emu's World were strong enough to carry a 20-minute show in their own right, by the live era they didn't need to be, so they weren't. In fact, they're absolutely wafer-thin in this series, and basically amount any old excuse to get Grotbags to the Pink Windmill, whereupon she takes three brats hostage (for the Cauldron Game). This improved in the next series, but proper storylines still wouldn't make a full comeback until 1987. Those efforts were saved for Boggle's Kingdom in the meantime. All that said, there's still more than enough fun to be enjoyed here as Rod and Emu cause a bit of havoc when they attend a ceremony to present the keys of a van for children with difficulties, but the teething troubles soon return and things go genuinely belly-up during Emu's Spin Quiz. Honestly, it's almost excruciating to watch. Whoever thought that was a good idea for live TV...?
Many thanks to Louise for lending me this tape.
(Please remember that this is an old VHS recording, so don't go expecting 1080p HD quality. I'm fairly certain that this video isn't commercially available, and I've uploaded it for its historic interest only. I am that little girl in Pink lol at 38 mins :) I am now 45 hahaha and I still have the Wham album and that little elephant . ...Thanks so much for posting this x It was filmed in Nottingham. There was interaction from Carol Lee Scott ....Not so much from Rod haha
+Kerri Matthews (Red) Wow - I hope it was a fun day out! I'd have loved to have been on the show, but sadly never had the chance. What was it like behind the scenes?
Glad you get to see it again after all these years. :-)
+VideotapeFTW As a young girl to get to see "How telly was made " It was fantastic ....The lights were so hot it was unreal ...It was all live and we were coached in the break to try and not freeze or dry up on camera ...Was very memorable .:)
+Kerri Matthews (Red) I hope you realise just how fortunate you were! A whole generation of kids would have given anything to swap places with you at that moment. :-)

I love Grotbags so much!
"Take your hands off of me! That's very personal! How dare you touch me!" I'll have to start using that line.
Thank you so much for uploading these. I've enjoyed them immensely over the past few months!
You're very welcome indeed - it's amazing how many people are enjoying the Pink Windmill here in 2017, whether they remember it from the first time around or have only just discovered it. :-)
Watching these shows again after hearing of the sad death of the wonderful Carol Lee Scott. I always thought that much as I loved Emu as a kid, Grotbags always stole the show. R>I>P> and sadly missed.
Yes, it wouldn't have been the same without Grotbags, or if anyone other than Carol Lee Scott had played the role. She was an absolutely perfect fit for the show.
Who only watched the songs until they discovered it’s a series?
Me, and now I’m a diehard fan!
OMG!!!! The credits say the kids are from CORONA stage school
I like how the witch has supposedly kidnapped three children, and they went on like nothing has happened 🤣🤣
I would have loved to grow up with this show, unfortunately im a decade or two too late.
40:50 "song" from emu's world series 5
If i'm having kids, i want them to show this =,) at an adult age, this is very charming to me ♡♡♡
they're probably not gonna like the fact that they can't play games with them anymore =( like Emu Spin
Emu spin looks so fun ngl
SONGS IS MY FAVORITE!! I’m so glad it got Emus Choice!
Yeah, it's my all-time favourite, too.
VideotapeFTW, thank you so much for posting this. I've actually seen this video before, but I didn't actually finish it, so I missed this episode of Boggle's Kingdom; it was one of the first ones I saw. The irony of it all is that the house pest looked more ghostly than the pretend ghosts, particularly in that nightdress and the cloth on his head, yet no-one was scared of him.
You're very welcome! These shows really do bring back great memories, don't they? :-)
VideotapeFTW
They certainly do!
+Claire Edgar As far as I know, Carol Lee Scott (Grotbags) has retired from showbiz, David Tate (Croc) still works in theatre, and I honestly don't know about Freddie Stevens (Redford). Of the kids, Joe in this episode went on to do a fair bit of TV work (Spatz, Playdays, Wizadora) before moving into the technical side, while Catrina went on to present the DJ Kat Show (as did Joe, coincidentally). A handful had appearances in things like The Bill, other kids built careers on the stage rather than the screen, still others became dance and fitness instructors, and some left the biz all together. One even got pretty big in local politics. Nicholas Pinnock, who appeared in 1987/8, is probably the biggest success story of all of them - he played Nelson Mandela in a TV film a couple of years ago and had a role in the recent series Fortitude.
Thanks for that. Also I did a bit of online research and the studios on Broad Street in Birmingham (where this was filmed) were demolished in 2015 to build Arena Central. Shops, offices and apartments.
+Claire Edgar And the Lenton Lane studios in Nottingham, where later episodes were shot, are now part of a university campus - the demise of all traces of Central is sadly practically complete.
Thanks to all of you for this info. I'm also watching the animated tv show Pigeon Street. I don't know if you remember this but I loved it when I was growing up. I always thought that the way the characters were drawn was weird.
+Claire Edgar Oh yes, I definitely remember Pigeon Street, and I loved it. For some reason, the Long-Distance Clara song in particular is seared into my memory. Hard to believe that only 13 episodes were ever made...
If you lived in Pigeon Street, you'd get pigeon shit on your feet!
Emma had 3 different hairstyles during this season i believe
Emma had THE most 80’s hair out the bunch lol 😂
I reckon Sarah has that many as well :)
2:34 Sarah really built a wall before it was cool.

Deep down, I think all Grotbags ever really wanted was a bit of peace and quiet. Either that, or to be invited to join in the fun and games - I'm not really sure...

I would love to know where these people are now. I know that Mr Rod Hull passed away in 1999 after falling off the roof of his house whilst trying to adjust his tv aerial.
Claire Edgar wth, for real?
Naket Jam
Yes
Sadly, Rod, Carol (Grotbags) and Freddie (Redford) have all died. I assume all the children are still living.
@@madabbafan yes all the kids are still alive, cause they remade an episode with all the kids grown up

20:41 ooh my gawd!
14:55 she says fuck
+ricardo de slattera Grotbags does *not* say the f-word, Ricardo! She's about to say "frighten", but only gets as far as "f..." when she suddenly realizes that Redford has failed to join her! :-)
+ricardo de slattera She was stuttering "Frightened". .w.;
Indeed she does....
I got that.
The song at the end, is that possibly the only time Spencer has a solo line (albeit a brief one)?
Good question - you've got me thinking now! He definitely had speaking parts, but you're right that he very rarely sang solo. I'm going to see if I can find any other examples... :-)
It doesn't sound too bad a voice - perhaps he just wasn't comfortable with singing. Having said that, it may not even be his voice! :D
Right on both counts. Spencer always looked like he lacked confidence unnecessarily, and also they sometimes did indeed have the wrong kid miming to a given line. Further investigation is needed...
Well found! I don't have much from the 1985 series, so perhaps that's when he really came into his own.
Having heard those two tracks now, the more I play Can't Stop The Music (which is obviously daily as it's compulsory) the more I can hear Spencer's voice in the group vocals.
15:26 Woopsie Freddie's robot hat fell off and exposed his hair 🤣😂
@10:59 "Oh..ohh..ohhh....YESSSSS!!!" Actually, no - you can clearly see the wheel landed on the 8, not the sail !
Even Hugh shakes his head slightly to begin with! I think they actually edge one of the cameras to the side after that to make it more convincing, but the first close-up says it all.
Thanks for sharing - that was very interesting. You were even more privileged than I thought, getting to go backstage like that!
Looks like the transfer to Nottingham coincided with the show going live, then. (Strange that the write-in address is still given as Birmingham, though.) And the Hovergrot shots didn't reappear in the series until 1987 - after live audiences were cancelled - so it looks like that was down to technical limitations rather than Rod's choice.
Thanks for the insight. :-)
'Bloody hells bells love, I've been trying to get through for an hour!'
I ship Joe/Catrina.
Joetrina 👌
I can recall Redford being rather camp, but damn, he's as limp as a Vicar's handshake!
So was Croc but it was the same actor
Donald trump would be proud
If this is where he's getting his best ideas, I for one look forward to the day when Trump starts walking around with an emu under his arm.
This is the most precious thing 😩🫶🏻
5:47 Redford got freaking ROASTED
6:07 wooooooow, grotbags is SAVAGE
15:45 again, wow
bro i live in birmingham and now it's 2021 fam i live in b8 come on i love this show
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING THESE!!! WHERE DO YOU FIND THEM?
Wow, another one of these! Really enjoy the live Pink Windmill shows. Do you have any more of Emu's Wide World (the first series perhaps)? Also did Anthony nudge that girl next to him at 18.15?? She gave him a bit of a funny look...:-)
Pink Windmill Post Office!
11:42
came for this, thanks!
I come from Germany. I don't understand everything with my school English, but it's still more than just entertaining. Even 40 years later.
15:28 The illusion is shattered!
7:17 Look how he minces off! Amazingly Ironic how Camp characters were such in the mainstream in the 70's and 80's they were even on Kids shows despite the massive Gay taboo back then. I don't know how they got away with it considering the Robot is gay as a pink handbag. The same with Skeleton in Superted.
ojideagu I think Redford was based on C3PO, but taken to ridiculous extremes. His campness was definitely a running joke - practically the very first line he ever said on the show was something like, "My arm's gone all limp". They certainly weren't subtle about it!
+VideotapeFTW How on earth did they get away with it on a kids show? As a kid you don't notice and just think he's soppy. But as an adult wow. It's not like people didn't associate camp with gay back then. Mr Humphreys from are you being served everyone knew was obviously meant to be gay.
+alex ojideagu I think that's the point - it's an in-joke for the parents rather than for the kids. I suppose they got away with it because it wasn't hateful, but silly and OTT. (Like every panto ever.)
+VideotapeFTW Well yes, he definitely reminds me of a Panto Dame. This is basically panto.
2:43 Build a wall!
I love this show
Nice attempt to style it out at 4:20!
HAHAHAHA XD
Debbie XD
Do you think Justin Fletcher saw this as Redford is not that too dissimilar to Robert the Robot in 'Justin's House'? This takes me back to my childhood. Thank You.
You're very welcome - and, yes, you're not the first person to point out that similarity. It wouldn't surprise me at all!
tysm
And her big brother, Hugh, has to be just the coolest of all the Pink Windmill Kids...
Ok, I stand corrected, but it's much more entertaining when they phone kids on the off-chance :D
The witch segment is amazing! There something Magic about this show.
You're most welcome. :-)
So, you're one of the privileged few who actually went to the Pink Windmill when they broadcast live! Was it a fun day out? Did the cast talk to/interact with audience before and after, or were they too stressed out?
I didn't know it was shot in exactly the same studio as The Price is Right. I think I'm right in saying that this was the last series that was shot in Birmingham before the move to Nottingham. And hand-cranked credits? I wonder when that stopped...
Redford is so funny
What is that 0,1 sec of music at 11:57 ?
It sounds like the Post Office jingle accidentally coming back in. They were probably trying to cue up the next pre-recorded insert and someone pushed the wrong button.
I was raised on this awesomness
The address was changed to Emus All Live Pink Windmill Show Central television Lenton Lane Nottingham NG 7 2PA in 1985. Reason: their original studio was demolished I think...
Central had two studios at the time - one in Nottingham and one in Birmingham. There was even a series of Emu's World shot at Elstree.
26:21 I like this joke "How are you cousin Poorly? poorly."
What inspirations got Trump from this show? (Sorry for asking, but I'm from Germany and I did'nt understand that point).
It's a joke about their plan to build a wall to keep out the bad guys, like Trump promised to do on the border of Mexico: ua-cam.com/video/YgET5kkoSZE/v-deo.htmlm33s
Rod's face at 20:59 'flipping hells bells!'
By the way, you may be interested in this clip:

On a couple of occasions for a few brief seconds the camera points in the wrong direction and you get to see the studio layout, breaking the magic.
75 million viewers watching?? Think you're being a bit optimistic there, Rod!
I never noticed that - she *did* have an odd expression on her face, didn't she?
There are four episodes from the first series of Emu's Wide World still to be uploaded. I'm just about getting on top of things now, so it shouldn't be long to wait. :-)
What's the name of the song at the end?
It's simply called Songs, and was previously featured in both Fame and Sesame Street. Here's the full Pink Windmill Kids version: ua-cam.com/video/4ohSqhqYTys/v-deo.html
42:38 Sarah Jeffs is left handed. I’m left handed too so it’s good to see a fellow lefty in the Pink Windmill Kids.
Good spot - yes, she is: ua-cam.com/video/zrLsKuhePYw/v-deo.html
I'm afraid I don't have one with the nephew, but it's mentioned here and one of the songs played for Emu's Choice:
ua-cam.com/video/5c86lGYxvIo/v-deo.htmlm49s
I'm pretty sure that's from Emu's World series five (1984), which has proved elusive so far.
Perhaps the other one you're thinking of is this:
/watch?v=qoqRezqARMI
Right at the end of the episode, Croc is seen partying with the Pink Windmill Kids before Grotbags delivers a walloping, and drags him off *by the snout*. Made me laugh, too! :-)
14:52 grotbags sounds like she drops an F bomb.... This show is a delight by the way.
VideotapeFTW, do you by any chance have that episode where Croc dances with the Pink Windmill kids, and Grotbags angrily hits him...as usual? My father laughed at that one! Also, there was another one where Grotbags laid out a spread for her equally evil nephew who was visiting, but when he arrived he seemed more interested in the food? Towards the end as they flew home, she hit him, which made a change from bashing Croc...
Grotbags is Coming, RUN FOR YOUR LIVE!!! 😧😧 14:25
No problem! Credit to Louise for the tape, of course. :-)
You're very welcome. :-)
That went politically quickly. I liked episode 1.
And the black one ran out of bricks.
You mean Debbie? She styled it out like a pro, though. :-)
Yes and true.
Did u recorded all this episodes in 1984?
Me personally? No, this tape was lent to me. But most vids on my channel are indeed off-air recordings from back when they were originally broadcast.
36:38 TAKE THE LP KID!!!!
The phone calls always seem to stress him so
2021 anybody?
The two girls with grotbags look genuinely scared
I can relate to grotbags now, them happy, dancing, exagerated facial expresioned brats do my brains in, but, it is great ;-)

"Emu's All Live Pink Floyd Show"...
27:45 What is he saying here?

Blatant, isn't it? Even Hugh seems to be shaking his head before finally going along with it... :-)
Lucy at the other end 'shut the hell up!'
