Here is Carol Lee Scott (in character as Grotbag) singing "Mean Green Mother from Outer Space" during the December 8, 1987 episode of the ITV children's show, Emu's Wide World. The song was originally written by lyricist Howard Ashman and composer Alan Menken for the 1986 film adaptation of their of-Broadway musical Little Shop of Horrors.
Created in the mold of the traditional pantomime villain by Scott (an actress and singer) and comedian Rod Hull, Grotbag was first conceived for the television show Emu's World, where she soon became a fixture of British children's shows in the 80s, even earning her own series in 1991.
Scott passed away at the age of 74 on July 3, 2017.
All the 80s effects in this is something
Some of it looks like a 60's music festival video montage
She... actually pulls it of
I'm getting "anything can happen on halloween" by Tim Curry vibes. I love it.
ANYTHING HE DOES IS HOLIDAY RELATED
This is so 80s
God I loved Grotbags as a kid, I always wanted her to win out against that bloody bird :-D
RIP Carol Lee Scott.
I knew exactly what this was going to be, even though the alert message on my phone only got as far as "by C" before cutting off.
This was used in a trail for the series in 1993, and when I finally saw the movie that summer I remember going "is THIS what that Grotbags song is from??"
Oh hai Dave
Is this character legit from space? I don't know the show.
@@gregdeandrea1450 yeh in little shop of horrors audrey 2 is a plant sent from space. its a great film worth a watch.
Gotta love references like this. And seeing the lyrics that weren't in the moive (obviously used to replace the ones that had swearing).
Ha ha she's brilliant 👏
What the HELL is this? Lol I love it
This works so well
Grotbags (that was the name not Grotbag) was my favourite character on the kids show back then. Carol really added character to Grotbags, I can't even imagine someone else playing the character. It would have been too easy to make the character flat.
I would love to see a version of the show with her being Audrey II.
omg, that'd be amazing-- hell, just the thought of any female actor taking on audrey II would be incredibly cool!
She was mine too. I was so close to going to see her (as Grotbags, without emu!) on holiday in the Isle of Mann and told my 18yo self that I couldn't. How I wish I had!
Grotbags was, in fact, mainly Carol's idea. She first thought the character should be a fairy, but Rod (Hull) thought on it overnight and decided a witch would be better. Carol compromised, saying she ought to be a hapless character. Carol's nickname (previously) was "Grot" (I'm told it was used affectionately!), and so part of her contribution to the character was to add "bags" to her nickname for the character's name. She also suggested the original orange make-up should be (vivid!) green and she then added the black make-up, including blacking out a tooth.
So, for certain, the character would have been very different had she not being playing her!
@@colintomlinson4577 Grotbags as a fairy is a horrific idea it just would not work. I was always team Grotbags.
Add to that shame on you, my 18 year old self would have sold his soul and been the red ones plaything for eternity to go and see her live as Grotbags without the baggage of Rod Hull and the puppet.
Nicknames are a double edged sword. In the main they are affectionate, but bullies can use them as a weapon. Just as a personal example I was known as a reader in my family so I earned the nick name of "worm" as a short for "Bookworm" but in school a bully learned about it and tried to use it against me. On the upside he then had to deal with my family when they found out he was using it to bully me.
I didn’t know Audrey 2 was a witch
I didn't know Grobags was from outer space
RIP Grotbags!
YASSSS QUEEN!!!! WORK IT
mind blown!!!!!
what drugs am i on?
bathsalt
All of them
I dont know. What drugs makes you see a angry bloodthirsty plant as a big fat green witch
Dope!
I know very little about this show beyond this video description and the small snippets I can find on Wikipedia. Was this just a regular occurrence on the show, just randomly covering songs from existing musicals?
Yep. At the end of most shows she'd break into song. Sometimes original, sometimes covers. Though this was the most "wtf" recognisable
Feed me
Now I’m wondering how Howard and Alan felt about this song being used on a kids’ show.
Someone cover this whole song as grotty...
What were in those brownies?
Carly Scott you may be good😢
What the..........
Grotbag is from outer space????
What did I just click on.
I- What- Uh- WHAT???
What face describes this

Peak cheese
Lost Jimquisition episode
sooooo no one's gonna talk about how this song is in another musical? from a year before this episode happened? look up little shop of horrors mean green mother from outer space if you dont know what im talking about
The musical was released more than a year before Carol sung this. What you are thinking of is the film version.
@@Dermacrosis yes i know the movie came out before this on december 19 1986 this (as said in the title of the video) came out in 1987 and as i said before "from a year before this episode happened" i think you should do some research before you try to argue and have a nice day
The film came out a year before this episode but the musical was released a few years before that. I suggest you do a little research hun. Last time I checked 1982 was 5 years before 1987.
@@Dermacrosis mean green mother was written, wait for it!, for the movie all inclusion of the song in the musical was after the movie came out. the musical is irrelevant so stop bringing it up. you're fighting a losing battle that you can't win
Somebody is talking about it.
Read this videos description but thank you for telling us what we already know.
Someone should make a sfm version with nightmare chica.singing the song
no not at all...nightmare chica isn't even green
Crash Bandicoot/Spyro Hinson Maybe, springtrap?
