This movie came out when I was 19 and I loved it because I thought Scott was the COOLEST. Seven years later I love it because Scott is a TOTAL LOSER and that's why it works.
Also note that Ramona's hair is Red/Pink, then Blue, then Green. The colors of the cornetto wrappers in Wrights three other movies (before Baby Driver) are Red, Blue and Green, in that order.
Video is based on RGB (red, green and blue) - the colours are combined in various ways to reproduce a wide array of colours. you look close up on the old CRT TVs and thats what you'll see Edgar wrights been making movies since VHS, He would have been exposed to that colour arrangement for decades (2 at least)
Also note that the three goddesses of The Legend of Zelda's lore - Din, Nayru, and Farore - are red, blue, and green, in that order. ... Not saying there's any specific relation between Scott Pilgrim and Zelda (beyond the obvious retro video game references in the movie) - or hell, even between Zelda and the Cornetto Trilogy. Just that red/blue/green, in that order, is a common sequence in color-coded video games.
@@AngelMartinez-hv6fj I know that in the comic, they lampshade that Scott isn't dead because he has the extra life (his sister is on the phone with their mom explaining it to her when he returns to the club in Volume 6).

There's too much to say about how good this video is to accurately write down in a single UA-cam comment but I do feel the overwhelming need to say something positive. You're really swell.
holy shit I've seen this movie too many times and that one phrase "he never makes a fucking decision" changes EVERYTHING scratch that, this review changes everything
Did anyone else notice that Scott’s inability to make decisions came from the fact that he was dumped shortly after he made the decision to get his hair cut? He attributes his heart break with decisions, even in the film when he makes the decision to tell Ramona that he loves her, he still messes it up. Ultimately at the end of the film it took someone to go get the girl.
Wow this was a very well written and edited video about one of my favorite movies. Scott Pilgrim has a growing number of fans now but for the longest time no one gave it any credit. Thank you for this, one of the best commentary/analysis videos I've seen.
"Cinema Wins" did a three-parter about "Scott Pilgrim...", and I really DID think "there was no more to say". And then I watched THIS take. You, sir, are a genius genus.
Jomps. Wobbin. Had me in tears. Because Serenity (and by extention Firefly) is a masterpiece of film, and unparalleled screenwriting, and because it was essentially un-'marketable' I will never have more of this story in the way that it was meant to be told. Also because funny.
So a week ago, I read Edgar's tweet and checked out this video: I absolutely loved it! Your unique combination of humor and analysis really amazes me, and this week I've been absolutely hooked on your other Movies with Mikey videos. I love your positive look on movies, and I'm definitely going to check out some of the films I haven't seen yet, like Turbo Kid and The Rocketeer. Also, from these videos it really shows how much time and effort is put into them, I absolutely love it. Hope your next video will be Interstellar, but from the comments it looks like it's gonna be Fury Road or Iron Man. No matter what, can't wait for your next video! Keep up the awesome work! PS. The fact that you have also written Borderlands blew my mind, you're an amazing writer dude :O
+Jur Remeijn [m] Thanks for all the kindness! Yes, I do put a lot of time and love into this show! As for the next vid, I announced it on twitter a few days ago, but The Fountain edged out The Mist by ONE vote! So The Fountain is up next :)
This movie is probably my fav Edgar Wright film out of them all. First minute and 30 seconds of your video, my response: "So many beautiful colors, should have sent a poet" Never noticed the clothes/hair color phase thing till now. I had heard about the "Numbers Theory" which I always found sorta fascinating My vote is for The Fountain, if only because that movie just goes DEEP and I've never seen anybody really deconstruct or really review it all that well.
I remember the weekend the film came out, was the first time I had really heard the word 'hipster.' That word's use skyrocketed over that opening weekend...the weekend where it became 'action-lovers vs hipsters' at the box-office. And yeah, the action-lovers went on-and-on about that first-place Box-office finish. ...but all these years later, how many people are still talking about The Expendables? I still recall when the Blu-ray was released, the stores severely under-ordered copies. It was the first time I could recall going to over a dozen different stores on a new-release Tuesday, and finding no copies to purchase in person!
This vid had a ton of neat insight into Scott Pilgrim, I really liked it! Buuuut!!!!! When you call it a "love triangle between three mild-mannered Canadians"... Ramona is not Canadian. PS: I'm sorry for being that guy.
I have watched this video 5 times now over the span of a week. Your in-depth analysis and entertaining presentation are utter delight. I am so happy to experience whole new levels of meaning in movies I have or haven't watched in the past that went completely past me. Thank you Mikey and everyone else who is helping to make this show. You prove that quality can stand above quantity on youtube.
+Astra7525 [m] Thank you and it means a lot! It's just me making the show as it's a labor of love. Also, you know there's like 22 other episodes, right? Covering a whole swath of films?
From my very first viewing (yes, I was one of the people who did see this in theaters) I was absolutely in love with it. The crazy part is that with each viewing it gets better because you notice more things; such as the X's that show up on screen when a new ex is about to show up. I'm glad there are people out there that appreciate this movie as much as I do. And I swear, my name being Scott has absolutely nothing to do with why I love it, lol.
One of my absolute favorites! Just found your channels and can't stop watching. Great work! You have a unique way of shedding light on dim subjects when it comes to movies awesome job! You nailed this movie 100%
1) I absolutely love the "But did you KNOOOOOW?" voice, that just tickled me 😂 2) I absolutely adore this movie. I have often considered making a compilation video of all the best dialogue from this movie, but then quickly realize that I'd basically just need to post the entire movie.... It's all brilliant.
Seriously though, check out the original book series. In the books, Scott and Ramona both undergo profound character deconstruction and rebirth in the story's conclusion. While in the movie they fight and then they make up and that's the end of it; in the books both Scott and Ramona separately realize that they are garbage people that only destroy everyone around them, and at the end the two learn to except themselves and each other, and take steps to genuinely restructure their lives and become better people. The movie's ending misses all the best stuff from the book ending, and it kind of ruins the movie for me.
Six graphic novels really can't be "properly" condensed down into a single average-length movie. Oh and also THE GRAPHIC NOVELS WEREN'T FINISHED BY THE TIME THE MOVIE CAME OUT. I love both. The graphic novels tell a more fleshed-out story, but this movie is god damn brilliantly put together. It is stuffed to the brim with detail and manages to reach a conclusion satisfying enough for its length. That's all anyone should care about, not "hurr durr it didn't match the books." Adaptations always make changes (especially if they adapt from an unfinished product). Lord of the Rings is probably the greatest adaption ever made and it changed a good amount of stuff from the books and if you disagree with me saying it's the greatest SORRY I CAN'T HEAR YOU OVER THE 11 ACADEMY AWARDS AND CONTINUED DISCUSSION BY FILM ANALYSTS 15 YEARS LATER OH WELL GUESS WE ALL AGREE IT'S THE GREATEST THEN MOVING ON.
I'm not talking about a little detail, I'm talking about the entire point of the story. The movie says "learn to believe in yourself, but keep it real, and if you play your cards right you'll bang a hot girl." Fine enough. But the book ends with "If you refuse to confront your problems will only result in misery and the only hope you have to reconstruct any semblance of happiness is by gutting everything about your life and killing the habits that are slowly killing you." I understand that this part of the book wasn't written when the movie began production. I do not blame Edgar Wright for anything. But it doesn't change the fact that the movie has a nothing ending. I thought the ending felt hollow when I first saw the movie as a new audience. Later, reading the books made any feelings I had on the movie ending crystal clear. The movie was a fun flick that made me rethink how movies can be filmed. The book made me rethink my real life. It isn't anyone's fault. But in terms of emotional impact, there is no comparison, to me at least.
Okay, I guess I'm going overboard a bit here. To dial it back, the comic didn't make me cry or anything. But I think that if the movie, as directed by Edgar Wright, had the book's ending, that it would have been a true classic among cinema. As it stands, I think I'll remember the book longer into the future than I remember the movie.
This is one of my top 3 movies, I can throw it on at any time and I'll enjoy it as if it were the first time. The level of detail and visual complexity in the movie is bonkers, every time I see it there's something new I didn't notice before and it makes other movies look drab and boring for a while after. The energy it has is just infectious and so unique. I think it's totally cool to look at the movie without the source material in mind too honestly, there's a lot of interesting differences especially given that the movie was being worked on with only two out of 6 books out but it would take forever to go through all of that too. I think they're two awesome versions of the same core story that both stand on their own and are different in genuinely fun and interesting ways. Awesome ep Mikey!
My favourite part about the lighting in the background of the bus scene is that towards the end of that scene, the x's in the background on screen for ramona change into hearts as she gradually comes around to Scott. Y'know, even though he's still being an arsehole - such a tiny background detail, but it says so much if you notice it. It's just bloody good.
re 4:40- the bokeh also changes to hearts when we cut back to Scott and he shifts the tone of conversation to affirm the clarity of the terms of their relationship. It's a filmmaking technique that literally anybody with a camera and a sheet of paper can do that's criminally under-utilized, but it's also rarely used as well as this example. Great episode, Mikey! Always looking forward to these.
Hey Mikey, this video keeps making me happy after years and years of rewatching. Thank-you for sparking my enjoyment of film and helping me see the layers below the screen. Thanks for making this video and all the others that express your love of film.
Mikey, I'm glad I'm not the only one who has a COMPLETELY OKAY AND HEALTHY obsession with Scott Pilgrim. I'd like to hear what you've got to say about Interstellar, it was up near the top of sci fi for me, then tanked down after The Martian came out and I still haven't figured out why.
The end, where you talk about it being a cult classic, reminded me of something I’ve always wanted to see. Can you, or someone else in the movie positive review spectrum, explain why we all love The Princesses Bride? Like, it’s kind of universally loved, but on the surface it looks just like all the other late 80s/early 90s low budget romantic fantasy movies we’ve forgotten. I just want somebody who knows movies and loves movies to tell me why I love it.
This is one of my favorite movies. I love that it's so unknown, gives me a great excuse to watch it over and over with new friends who haven't seen it! :D
I saw this movie repeatedly in theatres because I love it so hecking much and I was so sad to hear it was doing poorly. It's a gorgeous execution of everything it sets out to do. I feel your quirky and comedic style of editing suits it very well.
Mikey, you are a friggin' artist. I deeply admire your commitment to playing that song at your own personal expense. You are the man. I will now go watch four more of your videos.
I continue to adore Movies with Mikey, I've been glued to every episode, and this one I was really looking forward to, and it delivered. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is one of those movies that's special to me, on so many levels, not the least, but perhaps most superficial, is that it's one of those movies that was shot in Toronto (where I was born), and takes place there, something that rarely happens. More importantly this movie is set in the very real neighborhoods, parks, and music venues that people actually inhabit, and that, for a Torontonian, is super fun. Super fun fact: the band, Crash and the Boys, in the film, is said to be from Brampton (a small city outside of Toronto), which is where Michael Cera (and me) grew up. Also, the bassist, that Scott hates, is named Drew. My name is Drew. I played bass. I had a good laugh at the fun coincidence.
I'm from Toronto, so obviously I saw this movie in a theater in Salt Lake City. I spent a lot of the movie in awe of how awesome and hilarious it was, and saying to my friend "that's near my house!" (Plus it made me home-sick) I also, months earlier, went to go see Kevin Smith do one of his shows and Edgar Wright & some of the cast were there, taking a night off from the filming of this movie. Allison Pill & Kieran Culkun (probably spelled that wrong) steal this film! This movie holds a big place in my heart. Thank you for your video. :)
Found out about this series when you talked about dmca strikes on twitter and I binged all episodes and started recommending it. Really good stuff. I often fail to notice many of the nuances in movies and you're helping me open my eyes a bit.
This movie will always have a place in my heart because it is literally so close to home. Films hit so differently when they're shot in your own backyard.
I remember when this first came out, I was a curious 10 year old who quietly watched this on the second tv in the basement. To this day it's still one of my favorite movies of all time!
I freakin love this movie. There was a period where I was literally watching this every single week. Thank you for making that love feel justified because every single person I've shown this movie to or suggested it to has been like "Meh."
After watching all of these videos, I read the description for this one and realised that your podcast with Wil is why your voice sounds familiar. I'm an idiot and you're great at two things I'm now subscribed to.
I literally stopped everything when I got the notification from UA-cam that this video was up. I wish you could've spent more time on it but I loved the glimpse into your thoughts on Scott Pilgrim. As for my vote, you continue to make this hard but I will go with....The Mist because maybe your take will be the one that clarifies why people like that movie so much.
That's REALLY hard. I think I'll vote The Fountain (but I'd love to see Interstellar or Mad Max, the latter because you've talked about how much you love it)
you should do a movies with mikey about lala land!! i don't know if you do requests but i know a lot of people don't like it and you always have such interesting approaches to whatever you do.
I remember seeing this movie the Tuesday after it came out and being one of two people in the theater. But now everyone has seen it and loves it. Sometimes movies just take longer to find their audience
Man, I just found this video, but HOLY SHIT IT WAS FANTASTIC👏👏 i absolutely adore this film, and the whole video, the points made, the editing, everything really was so damn well executed💖💖
I didn't have the same feeling towards the film but I enjoyed your take on it and the extra details you pointed out. The only downside to this video is that the music is way louder than your speaking voice and makes it difficult to watch (especially at the beginning) because I was having to adjust the volume down for the music and up for your speech.
Good episode Mikey, I feel the need to watch Scott again now. As for next week, The mist! Please explain how it can be so predictable yet intriguing to watch. It annoyed me but I couldn't figure out just how it did that.
Please, and only if you can, could you do breakdowns of the rest of Edgar Wright's films? I loved this video essay along with the one on The World's End. If you could finish the Cornetto Trilogy, that would be amazing :)
Mikey, I've already seen this movie more than a dozen times, and I've seen portions of this movie upwards of three or four dozen times, but goddamn if your opening didn't make me wanna go revisit some of those scenes.
Hmm, I'll place a vote for Iron Man 3. So many points brought up in this were great! I want MORE Scott Pilgram talk! I was sad when the episode ended. ^_^
The way you describe Scott's inability to make a decision for himself reminds me of your style of mumbling delivery where every comment is followed by an 'or something' or '...uh...right guys?'
i had no idea this movie did so poorly, because all my friends and i LOVED it... but we were 20something hipsters who loved videogames and rock music. i've never seen any movie so perfectly capture a particular subcultural zeitgeist that i lived in, namely what it felt like to be a 20something videogame-and-rock-loving hipster in 2010. also, most of us were already fans of Edgar Wright, and this movie is just. top shelf Wright.
It was difficult to market. Like it's now one of my favorite movies of all time, but at the time it came out I had zero interest in watching it based on the marketing. The TV commercials were bad. I thought it was yet another quirky Michael Cera vehicle that was trying too hard to be cool. In the two years between Scott Pilgrim and Superbad/Juno, he'd starred in 5 questionable movies. I wasn't ready to this one a chance, not until it turned up on Netflix.
Oh my god Iv'e never noticed how so many of the actors have completly blown up after this. Making this movie now with the same cast would cost an unbelievable fortune.
Gotta say, and I know this comment will be irrelevant to most people, but as a twenty-ish Torontonian watching this movie i cannot express enough how the exact, singular atmosphere of the city was captured in every way. Also your videos are amazing thanks mikey.

Thanks for making this video and all the others that express your love of film.
Mikey, I'm glad I'm not the only one who has a COMPLETELY OKAY AND HEALTHY obsession with Scott Pilgrim.
I'd like to hear what you've got to say about Interstellar, it was up near the top of sci fi for me, then tanked down after The Martian came out and I still haven't figured out why.
i like that mikey recorded that segment of him & the dvd on my birthday
This video is one year old today! Happy uploadday!
Barely into the video, and I already have to stop. "How can you not love this movie?" Dude, this is my FAVORITE movie!
Found out about this series when you talked about dmca strikes on twitter and I binged all episodes and started recommending it. Really good stuff. I often fail to notice many of the nuances in movies and you're helping me open my eyes a bit.
I'd absolutely love to see your take on The Mist!
This movie will always have a place in my heart because it is literally so close to home. Films hit so differently when they're shot in your own backyard.
I like how your videos are rewatchable because as I play runescape I miss all the info on screen so I will rewatch this
So good. I don't care what movie you choose to do next, just keeping doing Movies with Mikey! You nail it every time!
I seriously love your movie reviews. Please don't stop.
"If your life had a face, I would punch it"
I remember when this first came out, I was a curious 10 year old who quietly watched this on the second tv in the basement. To this day it's still one of my favorite movies of all time!
I can't believe I've been waiting for this to be uploaded... but it came out on the channel 3 years ago and never showed up on a single watch next
this show is bound to become a huge classic. Just don't give up, Mikey, your talent is immense.
I freakin love this movie. There was a period where I was literally watching this every single week. Thank you for making that love feel justified because every single person I've shown this movie to or suggested it to has been like "Meh."
one of my favorite movies of all-time.
One of my favorites movies that you shined a lot of new light on. Thank you!
I am voting for Fountain because of how misunderstood I believe it is.
The "did you know" bit does very weird and amazing things to me.
great episode, and I really hope you do another one dedicated to an Edgar Wright film.
Man, I almost feel that I want you to do this video again, just because it goes through so much that it can feel hard to keep up with
After watching all of these videos, I read the description for this one and realised that your podcast with Wil is why your voice sounds familiar. I'm an idiot and you're great at two things I'm now subscribed to.
+dominictemple [m] Thanks for the sub! Also, don't feel bad. I'm Mr. BehindtheScenesGuy!
This was a beautifully edited and voiced video. Egoraptor level of jokes and editing here. Bravo man. Great movie too.
I love this series. I share this series on Facebook. Also I love Serenity. I like it a lot more than Firefly.
Keep it up.
I think FB steals the views so YT and him don't receive revenue.
Mikey! I actually started watching MwM after listening to TV Crimes and I'm so glad I did, you sir are awesome!
This movie RULES and I can't believe more people haven't seen it!!!!
I'm throwing in for The Mist. Also, HOT DAMN THAT WAS ALL OF THE SCOTT PILGRIM. Cracking episode ^___^
You are amazing. I am so happy EGA recommended you. Thank you for being awesome.
One of the only films I've watched the entirety of on LSD. Highly recommended.
nope pink...
Gotta tell you bro, there was no LSD involved
Woah so did I that’s so weird 😧
I watched this on shrooms. Wasn’t as good as I thought it was going to be (on shrooms I mean, I love this movie)
Thank you for this sweet review type thing
Thanks for the casual spoiler on Hot Fuzz. I was about to watch it after watching your comments on Worlds End
Please never stop making this series. Ever.
His commentary on hot Fuzz is scarily accurate for 2020
Good episode Mikey, I feel the need to watch Scott again now.
Your theme music gets me SO excited.
The way you do this reminds me of the spastic style of the old Bill Nye show.
Also, is it nice to know that your favorite director watches your show?
Jomps Wobbin. Classic. You deserve more subs, man.
Remember when you used to do these. Yeah, good times.
Seriously, why did this movie not do so well.
Everytime you say “butdidyouknooowww” I smile.
To the people in the know, Scott Pilgrim did not go overlooked. Great video!
Yep, this is a great movie. I dig your show, just subbed, keep up the great work!
Oh my god Iv'e never noticed how so many of the actors have completly blown up after this. Making this movie now with the same cast would cost an unbelievable fortune.
Quite possibly my favorite movie of all time. I saw it in theaters four times. I can't imagine ever doing that again.
Gotta say, and I know this comment will be irrelevant to most people, but as a twenty-ish Torontonian watching this movie i cannot express enough how the exact, singular atmosphere of the city was captured in every way. Also your videos are amazing thanks mikey.
I've got to vote for The Mist. I'd love a Mikey take of that movie.
I always knew that scott pilgrim was something especial, but this... wow.
Congrats, man! Awesome video
I'd say do Mad Max but like I want the mist more. So my vote is the mist.
Planning on doing a video on this movie myself and bro... you just hit the nail on the fucking head. One of the most underrated movies of all time.
that intro gives me life
The Fountain, Mikey. The Fountain!
The moment when the word DUALITY appears, the progress bar is at exactly the same location as the splitscreen. Coincidence???
''But Did You Knowwwwwww?'' fucking love that clip
movies with mikey, you have become my reason for existence.
Great video about one of my favorite movies.
