4:10 the other thing about Danny is how FAST he picks up things from Angel. He VERY quickly adopts better terminology and procedure. It's like he's just been lacking a proper actual mentor....
Yeah, it's very clear that his dad has neglected what would otherwise be a great policeman officer, making the 'comedic sidekick' an actually capable and respectable character instead of a joke on two legs.
It was so expensive because they had to license every film shown in Andy’s library as well as the rights to both Point Break and Bad Boys II, as well of the likenesses of all the people in those clips, including a stunt double from the Point Break clip. Once you realise how many films are visible it’s pretty understandable that those scenes were so expensive
Another perspective on this film that I don't think a lot of people see: It takes British small-town crime drama and smashes it headfirst into Hollywood action films, buddy cop movies, and slasher horror. "Big police action flick in a small town" is already a funny premise - but a in addition it's sending shows like Midsomer Murders, which was running for ten years at that point (and is still going today): The idea of that much violent crime in rural England is pretty amusing already. Putting a brutal murder conspiracy in that same setting makes it fucking hilarious. Bonus fun fact about Detectives Wainwright and Cartwright: Those names mean almost exactly the same thing.
3 year old comment but I have to add to the 'big police... in a small town' bit. cant forget the scene where its literally a model village they're fighting in lol
I've always just loved how this movie shifts genres, from a simple fish-out-of-water comedy to an incredibly bloody, Wicker Man-ish horror-comedy to a gleefully OTT parody of the shoot-em-up action movies it's been talking about for its whole running time, while telling a coherent story with consistent characters.
I live about 10 minutes from where this was filmed (Wells city one of the smallest cities in Europe smaller than most towns) and in case you didn't know its where Edgar Wright grew up, and people round here use Hot Fuzz quotes like a second language.
It's so rare that people outside of a few major cities get any kind of movie that takes place where they live. Imagine living in one of the tiniest cities and out of nowhere you get one of the best movies.
One of my favorite details of the movie is the rifle that Angel when he gets all of his weapons from the police station is the FAL, otherwise known as the right arm of the Free World. It was created by NATO to be a weapon not for war, but for keeping the peace, which is the perfect weapon for the perfect peacekeeper of Angel.
Apparently, they originally wrote in a love interest for Nicholas Angel, but decided it wasn't working and a lot of the love interest's lines were given straight to Danny

One of my favorite BTS bits is how Edgar Wright explains that in the scene when Angel and Skinner meet while jogging, the original take didn't match the storyboards so they reshot it, but then when editing, they realized that in the original take, Dalton kept moving into the center of the frame and shoving Pegg off to the side, and that made Skinner seem subtly threatening so that's the take they ended up using. Just so much care and detail in this movie.

Darvel…..nah, Misney should have trusted him and given him Ant-man. IMAGINE an Edgar Ant-man movie…..Give him another project fackin sharpish you CLARTS!
Watching this review again, makes me realize that I am glad that Wright and Pegg made a great, good cop movie. They are rare, and this one was brilliant as you said, in helping show a GOOD COP, helping others be their best in the end. Making a proper, well taken care of town in the end. This movie blew my mind when I saw it, and, yes, it absolutely has gotten better with every, single, watch of it.
10 Cloverfield Lane The 'Make Stanford great again' line is absolutely chilling in retrospect, wow. Thanks for the great video, it's been a while since I've watched Hot Fuzz, I should watch it again soon!
Your entire comment is almost word for word what I was going to post...so instead I have given you an upvote and will creepily let you know that your brain has a twin somewhere in this world.
I love your productions. (I was going to say I love your shit, but your videos have made me feel a little artsy-fartsy) - I have seen most of them, and, in particular, the one where you talk about all the things you have gone through. Something I said to a girl going through a hard time a long time ago, "You don't realize the impact you have on people, the smallest thing can improve someone's life immeasurably. A smile to someone who hasn't received one in days, a compliment on a purse, a moment to listen when someone needs it." - You have that quality, though you may feel down and struggle, realize how much you bring to people, the quality of your productions, and your insight, are glorious. There is a saying, that the dead hear our prayers, and loving thoughts of them, as music. Stay alive and hear the music of your fans, and thrive.
I watched this movie at the cinemas in 2007 with my mate for his birthday. I had never even heard of the movie, didn't know who Edgar Wright or Simon Pegg was and never heard of Shaun of the Dead. I went into this movie with no expectations. It immediately became my favourite movie ever! I watched the whole thing with a huge grin on my face, my mate didn't fully understand why I loved it so much but I don't care. I watch this movie once a year easily and have seen it probably 20+ times (and pick up on new things each time). As soon as I got home after watching the movie I told my parents how good it was and to rent it as soon as it came out on DVD. Shortly after watching it on rental, Dad bought it.
I honestly feel all of Edgar Wright's films get better with every rewatch. I feel the same for Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, At World's End, Scott Pilgrim, and Baby Driver. Though I've only seen Baby Driver and At World's End once so far, so I need to rewatch them to make sure of that one.
This video is amazing on many levels, but the best bit may be you acknowledging the script supervisors' amazing work. It's a role that often goes unnoticed but it's so important for making a film, and it's great to see their names on screen in a fan video like this.
personally hot fuzz is a top 10 film for me ever made...its a top 20 film period with how much it packs for a cheap budget ..name me any other person who can get that much material out of 22 million..i show you a liar...
I still remember the day my friend brought over the DVD and we watched in my dorm room on my computer. This will always be a TOP 10 movie for me the same as it is for you. This movie delivers on every second of the film. I still love the quick time lapse edits that connect in one fluid motion to quickly convey where the characters are going with out showing nonsense.
Another fantastic dissection of one of my favourite movies, having grown up in the same strange corner of the UK as Messrs Wright and Pegg the whole vibe of Sandford and it's inhabitants was spot on and maybe even toned down Keep up the good work, also another vote for Trainspotting 2 to get the MwM treatment, if it wasn't for Logan, it would be my movie of the year (BR2049 might edge it but that needs a lot of watching before I can truly call it)
I watched this film last night and when Frank says he would do whatever it takes to "makes Sanford great again" I was like 😬😬😬😬 that is a waaay different meaning to that now in 2020
Just came across your channel and I have to say I am blown away at how well you were able to dissect and praise this movie for what it did, not only then, but now as well. I know that I am a few years late, but keep up the good work! Now if you will excuse me, I have a back catalog of three plus years of your content to get through.
YEEEEEEEEAAAAAAHHH, Roy!!!!! Thank you for this excellent dissection of one of the best films ever, ever, ever. There is so much in Hot Fuzz that has become part of my wife an my lexicon ("Judge Judy Executioner", "Narp?", "Pttttttttpht! Jog on!"). We shared it with our teenage daughter earlier this year so I could geek out with her about all the cool story conventions the film uses, jump cuts to give a full narrative, foreshadowing and payoff... GAAAAAAAA!!!! Just so much love, so thanks! (Also, 10 Cloverfield Lane is wonderful and I look forward to your discussion of it!)
"mike laidlaw, criminal attorney at law.. also under investigation" this one cracked me up! great video.. cant believe people believe edgar is all "style over substance"
It's a great film. One of the things I love is that the parody of OTT shoot-em-ups never devolves into sneering superiority or contempt. Every cliche and call back is engineered to fit the story and the characters perfectly. It's a genuine, heart-felt love letter to the 80s action genre and made with such obvious glee by all involved, it shines through. My favourite of the trilogy by far.
Oh Mikey I don't know how you do it, but you do every time. You articulate what so many of us have no way of expressing. I have watched, many repeatedly, every one of your videos of films I have seen, and some I haven't. They never get old. You are a genius among men. Just hearing your opening credits tune gives me joy and as long as you keep making videos I will keep watching them.
This video just gained you a new subscriber. Your last point is just the best. I don't know how many times I've seen Hot Fuzz and never saw that deep meaning. You are genius.
The only problem with _Hot Fuzz_ is the title. Whenever I sit someone down to watch it, they're always shocked that it wasn't some straight-to-comedy-central B-movie since the title's so... mis-match-y.
Yeah, it's a suprisingly prominent issue I've also dealt with as an Edgar Wright fan... His titles are off-putting to many audiences. Not just Hot Fuzz, but films like Baby Driver and Shaun of the Dead. Loads of people seemed instantly disinterested when I first told them those titles.
There's ONE thing I didn't know....I never noticed before the constant off-screen gun cocking! I have to wait this film again. I already watch it like twice a year or something.
I just rewatched Hot Fuzz on HBO Max, I remember the plot but forgot so many details and funny moments. If you haven’t seen the movie yet go watch it 🍿
@@magellanicraincloud Same, man, same. Everytime I find out that one of my friends hasn't watched Baby Driver, I get giddy with joy, because I can show them the magic of Edgar Wright and it also gives me an excuse to rewatch it again
Well I felt really sad when I showed my friends this, one of my favorite movies, and they just thought it was long and boring and only laughed at the old man that mumbled... But your video solved that through pure catarsis
Excellent video. Hot Fuzz is easily my favorite movie, and I'm glad you've talked about things that I haven't even considered despite having watched this film easily over 20 times
so as someone who lives within a few miles radius of where the film is set/filmed (where edgar wright grew up) i can confirm that all of the south-west UK humour is soo unbelievably accurate and i literally have neighbours who remind me of characters in hot fuzz
I honestly dont know how you dont have way more subs than 85k... I always look forward to your thoughtfully well made videos. There is a TON of effort that you throw into these and its well well appreciated. Keep it up man!
Please do 10 Cloverfield Lane! Also, Hot Fuzz was already one of my favorites, but now I gotta rewatch it again to fully absorb your insights, so... Thanks! :)
Thank you! One of my top five favorite films. Amazingly cast, incredibly and smartly written, perfectly edited, fantasticly directed, and it's hilarious. The layers and overall excellence of the film are what keep me coming back repeatedly. Love your insight and affection for Hot Fuzz, keep up the good work!
Great movie, and great video! I remember getting a real kick out of Danny's fascination with American cop movies the first time I watched it. I had a roommate from the UK and it always kinda stuck in my head, the way he told me how British cops enjoy US cop movies but they do NOT aim to emulate US police tactics and force. Over the last decade I feel like cop movies and tv shows have turned into dangerous Cop-aganda that has caused the self-proclaimed "free-est country on earth" to celebrate invasive policing and mass incarceration. I dunno, my cousin was one of the most corrupt cops to ever wear a badge and he spent years in prison for the things he did, so maybe I'm biased. Either way, great video and synopsis.
It is indeed a cracking film. Although it was filmed in Wells, England the "fictional" village of Sandford is not far away in the same county, Somerset. It's also the home village of Thatcher's cider, which is excellent :-)
Take how much you enjoy this movie, then add the factor of living in the part of the UK they're poking fun at and imagine how much I enjoy this movie. I can't buy chewing gum and my local store without suppressing laughter because of this fucking movie. All time favourite comedy.
I think the world is largely the same as it was ten (now 13) years ago. It's just we're all collectively more aware of the problems than we used to be.
this movie is such a notch in my belt that I frequently play it as background noise comfortably. thank you for highlighting many of your points, and for lifting me out of my stupor. you show how well Wright and Pegg portray police officers as admirable public figures when they use their authority intelligently, judiciously, and fairly and how difficult all of those become when complex crime like the NWA does occur. the length of your video seems short because you could probably keep going. it's that strong. as much as I already did, I now have new-found respect for how big this movie really is.
I saw this movie in the theater without knowing anything about it before hand. Hot Fuzz is one of my favorite movies of all time. I'm glad you reviewed it. Well done!
I know what is getting all the popular votes, but... Seriously Man on Fire gets my vote because it's the most out there choice of movies. I want to know what you'll say about it. Man on Fire, 1000%.
I know you were trepidatious about this one, but out of the park my dude! Your passion for film inspires me. I am fairly certain, I have watched all of your content at least three times. I hope you have found your destiny in making these videos. Shame though, I think you would have made a great Muppet...
I was fortunate enough to grow up around 15 mins outside of Wells which is where they film the outside of the pub, market area, grocery store. The pub has a framed police vest which is signed by the crew.
The first film I ever saw that stuck with me was Slither (1973). I was nine. It subverted conventions I didn't even know were conventions. I'm 56. I still rewatch it, and it still makes sublime fun of formula Hollywood movies.

Jack's Movie Reviews Hey! Just wanted to say I'm a big fan of your work, as well as "Movies with Mikey"!! Keep making awesome content!!
10 Cloverfield Lane
The 'Make Stanford great again' line is absolutely chilling in retrospect, wow. Thanks for the great video, it's been a while since I've watched Hot Fuzz, I should watch it again soon!
Your entire comment is almost word for word what I was going to post...so instead I have given you an upvote and will creepily let you know that your brain has a twin somewhere in this world.
Wright N Desk I know that line is so weird now. I only watched this film for the first time last night. It was awesome
Donald Trump stole his slogan from an antagonist in an Edgar Wright film and a metal gear solid villain
I mean, Ronald Regan technically did it first though.
Same
I love your productions.
Phew Mikey's speech on the greater good really hits hard during these times of civil unrest, police brutality, and riots.
The black clad cultists who say that the mayhem and destruction they do is all for the greater good really does hit home.
Points at spit-roast while talking to 2 guys - "that's me after a coupla pints" hilariously subtle line
Academy Award Winner Olivia Colman
Fantastic, especially the somewhat risky last 20%. My vote for the next one is The Royal Tenenbaums.
37. I watched "Hot Fuzz" 37 times.
IN A ROW???
"man i really need to finish the timing belt on my car and -"
-mikey, hot fuzz appears
oh SHIT
IT JUST GOT REAL
This video is amazing on many levels, but the best bit may be you acknowledging the script supervisors' amazing work. It's a role that often goes unnoticed but it's so important for making a film, and it's great to see their names on screen in a fan video like this.
Thank you so much for giving this film it's just desserts.
personally hot fuzz is a top 10 film for me ever made...its a top 20 film period with how much it packs for a cheap budget ..name me any other person who can get that much material out of 22 million..i show you a liar...
Another fantastic dissection of one of my favourite movies, having grown up in the same strange corner of the UK as Messrs Wright and Pegg the whole vibe of Sandford and it's inhabitants was spot on and maybe even toned down
Keep up the good work, also another vote for Trainspotting 2 to get the MwM treatment, if it wasn't for Logan, it would be my movie of the year (BR2049 might edge it but that needs a lot of watching before I can truly call it)
I watched this film last night and when Frank says he would do whatever it takes to "makes Sanford great again" I was like 😬😬😬😬 that is a waaay different meaning to that now in 2020
Ohhh shut up
Trump 2020❤️
@@bigfan1041 trump 1946-2020
“...and is pointless.”
Me: “well someone wants their legs broken.”
That review hit hard, especially considering the recent events.
What recent events?
I feel like this movie, and this video, keeps getting better with age.
hiya, stopped mid-vid and watched hot fuzz for the first time. thank you. that is all. i agree. can't wait to see it again :)
Rankerquat that’s what I expected too xD
Yeah, it's a suprisingly prominent issue I've also dealt with as an Edgar Wright fan... His titles are off-putting to many audiences. Not just Hot Fuzz, but films like Baby Driver and Shaun of the Dead. Loads of people seemed instantly disinterested when I first told them those titles.
That’s the point
Actually, Edgar Wright put that title in a somewhat parody to the generic titles often seen in action movies
True. I failed to convince my dad to watch Baby Driver simply because of how goofy the title was.
I've seen this movie enough times that I didn't learn much new from this video
but you know what? It's an excellent video anyway.
There's ONE thing I didn't know....I never noticed before the constant off-screen gun cocking!
I have to wait this film again. I already watch it like twice a year or something.
I just rewatched Hot Fuzz on HBO Max, I remember the plot but forgot so many details and funny moments. If you haven’t seen the movie yet go watch it 🍿
OMG MIKEY YOU DID IT AGAIN!! Love you!!
My vote is for Moonlight but I’ll gladly take 10Cloverfield Lane as well!!
I saw Baby Driver the other day and it blew my god damn mind. Very interested in Edgar Wright now. (also please do clover field lane omg)
I watched Baby Driver recently. I put it on as background noise to go to sleep to... and I watched it, transfixed, unable to move. It was amazing.
@@magellanicraincloud Same, man, same. Everytime I find out that one of my friends hasn't watched Baby Driver, I get giddy with joy, because I can show them the magic of Edgar Wright and it also gives me an excuse to rewatch it again
The first time I’ve seen this movie was when they showed it late at night on HBO and I was immediately hook within the first 2 minutes.
I feel it incumbent upon me to point out that Martin Freeman was also in Shaun of the Dead. ;)
A very clever video about an even cleverer film.
Thank you Mikey, and thank you Edgar, Simon, Nick and everyone else in the film.
I still say "the greater good" when anyone else says it. Here to enjoy the vid popping off.
Well I felt really sad when I showed my friends this, one of my favorite movies, and they just thought it was long and boring and only laughed at the old man that mumbled... But your video solved that through pure catarsis
Wow.....are you still friends with that person? Do they not know how to watch films correctly?
Get new friends.
Excellent video. Hot Fuzz is easily my favorite movie, and I'm glad you've talked about things that I haven't even considered despite having watched this film easily over 20 times
Three flavors cornetto is the best trilogy ever fight me
I'll be your tag team partner. Best of All-Time
so as someone who lives within a few miles radius of where the film is set/filmed (where edgar wright grew up) i can confirm that all of the south-west UK humour is soo unbelievably accurate and i literally have neighbours who remind me of characters in hot fuzz
Damn Mikey. This review made me fall in love with this movie yet again.
Also, my vote is for 10 Cloverfield plz.
I think this is your best yet. Hot Fuzz climbs in my list of favourite films every time I see it. If it’s not No. 1 now, it soon will be.
I just Finished the cornetto trilogy and Hot fuzz is my favourite!
It is indeed a cracking film.
Although it was filmed in Wells, England the "fictional" village of Sandford is not far away in the same county, Somerset.
It's also the home village of Thatcher's cider, which is excellent :-)
1) was so psyched to see this at last
Take how much you enjoy this movie, then add the factor of living in the part of the UK they're poking fun at and imagine how much I enjoy this movie. I can't buy chewing gum and my local store without suppressing laughter because of this fucking movie. All time favourite comedy.
I think the world is largely the same as it was ten (now 13) years ago. It's just we're all collectively more aware of the problems than we used to be.
This deserves so many more views and likes.
Angel: "MORNING!!!!"
this movie is such a notch in my belt that I frequently play it as background noise comfortably. thank you for highlighting many of your points, and for lifting me out of my stupor. you show how well Wright and Pegg portray police officers as admirable public figures when they use their authority intelligently, judiciously, and fairly and how difficult all of those become when complex crime like the NWA does occur. the length of your video seems short because you could probably keep going. it's that strong. as much as I already did, I now have new-found respect for how big this movie really is.
17:10 Wow I must have seen this movie like 15 times but I never noticed that
I saw this movie in the theater without knowing anything about it before hand.
So good, love Movies with Mikey and Film Joy!
24:40 Pat Rothfuss? Wait, like the actual Pat Rothfuss?! That's awesome!
You are by far my favorite channel on UA-cam please don't ever stop making these videos
I know you were trepidatious about this one, but out of the park my dude! Your passion for film inspires me. I am fairly certain, I have watched all of your content at least three times. I hope you have found your destiny in making these videos. Shame though, I think you would have made a great Muppet...
I loved the casual throwing of the word "grok" in the voice over. Brilliant.
Is that smooth mcgroove mute city????!!! Well done, sir
Cant even tell you how many times I’ve watched this movie. I don’t know when I discovered Simon Pegg, but I don’t remember life without him.
Moonlight, please..... So hard to choose, great options!
I was fortunate enough to grow up around 15 mins outside of Wells which is where they film the outside of the pub, market area, grocery store. The pub has a framed police vest which is signed by the crew.
I'd really love to see 10 Cloverfield Lane next, that movie and the ARG surrounding the Cloverfield universe (Cloververse?) was incredibly enjoyable.
Dan Trachtenberg, totally rad, dude :p
I really did not expect such a well made thriller as a follow-up to Cloverfield (which was just a slightly above average monster movie in my opinion).
The first film I ever saw that stuck with me was Slither (1973). I was nine. It subverted conventions I didn't even know were conventions.
I'm 56. I still rewatch it, and it still makes sublime fun of formula Hollywood movies.
Moonlight, por favor. And I'm _sooooooooooooooooooooooo_ pumped that you'll be doing Baby Driver someday. It's a goddamn knockout.
Não entendi o por favor mas beleza
