I think one of the things I love about Shaun of the Dead is that it's not REALLY a parody. Like it has winking references to other zombie movies but it doesn't require any knowledge of zombies or horror or anything to work on its own because it's got solid characters and gags and the whole situation is taken seriously. In the commentary on one of the deleted scenes they talked about how they didn't want to make the zombies "silly" (the scene in question was a visual gag with the zombies and that was why they cut it) and I think that decision really works, because if the zombies had just been for gags it would have undercut the story and ruined the tone.
That's right. They didn't want to parody the genre because they loved the classic zombie movies, and Resident Evil 2, and wanted to make a zombie movie for that reason. Which just had to be funny and meaningful, because that's what Ed and Simon do, especially together.
Yeah, it really is more of a zombie movie that happens to be really funny other than a spoof on the genre, which I love. You can just tell how much love and appreciation Ed and Simon had for classic zombie movies in this.
This was very unexpected. I read a funny comment on a wonderful video and as I'm about to keep scrolling I am forced to do a double take and research the user who made it. I never expected to see Jon "The Spot" Risinger in the comments of a review for Shaun of The Dead. Absolutely astounding.
Shaun mums name is not Mary, but Barbara. It's an hommage to the Barbara character in Night Of The Living Dead. Hence the "We're coming to get you Barbara". Mary was the female zombie in their garden. All snarkishness aside: love the channel, love the trilogy youtube movies.
That shot where Shawn gives Ed his last cigarette kills me every time. A silent "good-bye" between two best friends. I wouldn't have any words for that moment either.
Oh man this movie holds a weird place in my heart. As my name is Sean, my parents joked about it the year it came out. Then, around the time i turned 11 or 12, they let me watch it. I remember being terrified and crying at then end as people are getting their innards ripped out. It became this weird experience of anticipation, then joy, then just shock. An undeniable experience.
A thing I quite like about this film, beside all the...everything, obviously, is that this is one of the only films where they show WHY the main character is so self sacrificing for his friends. Now don't get me wrong, obviously I don't NEED an explanation for that. But Shaun's life is in such a dead end, it makes sense for him to be willing to kill himself protecting people who's lives "have worth". Like was directly said to you: the good things are worth fighting for.
I really loved this classic episode, you are so good at putting into words what movies mean to you. With this episode it lines up so perfectly with my thoughts. I watched this movie when I was in high school before I really saw past the action, but now I go back and find something new every single time, and find the older I get the more I relate to the movie. Thanks for a great episode Mikey!
If I remember correctly, the dogs can't look up bit started partially in Spaced where they shout at the dog, Colin, on the yard from upstairs and Colin turned around confused toward the noise but it never occurred to him that the voice could be coming from somewhere so high up. So it looked like he couldn't look up at them who shouted. It was an in-joke since then and later used as a funny factoid that someone like the childlike Ed would believe. Now that I think about it, I've also been told that when dogs cock their head slightly it helps them pinpoint a soundsource vertically. So if they continued shouting "Colin!" when the dog cocked his head the myth might have never started. That's the thing about good writing. It has many layers, even a stupid throwaway repeated gag like "dogs can't look up" :P
Can I just say, that I found this channel out of the blue the other day, and since then I've been watching everything I possibly can. I love everything about this channel and it's just something I need in my life right now. Thank you.
I absolutely adored this. Thanks for making it, Mikey! I think we had a similar experience with avoiding this movie when it first came out. From the title and the posters, it just looked like it was going to be one of those awful spoof movies, like 'Superhero Movie' or something like that. I endured a lot of pestering before I finally watched it, wherein it then instantly became one of my favourite movies of all time. Off the back of watching this, I binged both seasons of Spaced multiple times, and even went as far as to bleach my hair blonde and trim my ginger beard to match the style of Tim's in the show! Being a fellow Ginger, 'Shaun' has very often been my go to character for Halloween parties... Fancy dress aside, I don't think it's an over-statement to say that this movie was one of the biggest influences in my life, and you sir, have done it justice with another great video!
About dogs not looking up: while filming a scene for Pegg/Wright's sitcom Spaced where a dog was supposed to be reacting to Jessica Hynes' character in an upstairs window, the dog's handler was giving orders to the dog from the ground floor. The finished shot made it look (unintentionally) like the dog wasn't looking up at the character even though it was reacting to them. Nick Frost (who played Mike in Spaced) made a jokey claim on the commentary that this is because dogs can't look up.
Really enjoyed the crap out of this one. Loved seeing a bit more of Mikey in his place this time than we normally do, in a love letter to something very important to him. Never stop starting!
Just recently discovered this channel and have been binge watching all the episodes to such an extent that I have a Pavlovian response of happiness whenever I hear the little opening song. So much love.
Mikey this was absolutely fantastic. The Cornetto Trilogy is probably my favorite series of films and you broke them down masterfully. Very well done sir.
Fun fact, Dianne actually survived. After getting through the crowd with David's leg, she climbed up a tree and ate David's leg to survive until the zombies were gone. She understandably moved away and still keeps in touch.
It's probably weird that this is the first video of yours I watched. But I can tell you it is not going to be the last. This was so sincere and informative and also I am going to watch this movie again RIGHT now.
For moment you made forget that this is one of my favourite comedies and showed me an emotion story of growing up and making something of yourself........with zombies. “Don’t use the Z word!!!!!” So thank you!!!! Dude you have to be one of the best youtubers going around today and what you say about these movies have changed how I watch these movies. Behind the drunk sounding muffled catawups....catawpas...catawampus....yeah? You make movie essay breakdown... things interesting, funny, really emotional at times (like really emotion, like The Iron Giant one got me choked up) and insightful. So here’s to another five years!!!!!!!!
anytime people ask me why Shaun of the Dead is my favorite movie i tell them to watch this vid. Mikey gloriously points out why i love this movie so much in a way i could never. BRILLIANT!
I once dropped my phone while recording, and the phone bounced a couple times and ended up pointing at the sky for 10 minutes. Occasionally a bit flew past. Even THAT was a better action film than Transformers.
I just wanted to say that I just discovered your videos yesterday and I love them I can't stop watching them! Please keep making them I love your take on movies, You know not just the obvious crap everyone keeps throwing at us. Thoughtful, funny and IMO just fantastic. Whispers "If you make them I will watch."
Dude, you have revitalized my love of film and given me a new positive perspective on films I wouldn’t have given a chance. Don’t ever let anyone dull your sparkle man.
I love this channel so much. Your knowledge about and passion for films in equal measure makes every video so interesting and such a pleasure to watch. Your open enthusiasm is lovely, the care and effort you put into each piece is amazing, and it's also really nice to see more of you in the more recent videos. Thank you for sharing this with us :)
Hey Mikey, you will definitely appreciate this. One of the hidden depths of this film I don’t think anyone else has noticed. There is that running gag in the film that dogs can’t look up. Well if you look at Philip he treats Shaun like he is a dog. Watch and see their interactions. Before Philip dies he has that touching moment where he tells Shaun he loves him and gives him other words of support. But still he is seeing him like a dog. He says to Shaun he wanted to be someone he could look up to. But deep down he didn’t believe Shaun could look up being that he saw him as a dog and that dogs can’t look up. So ultimately while he might have wanted to be that figure for Shaun he didn’t believe Shaun could fulfill his role in that dynamic. The last thing Philip says to Shaun is “good boy”. Now that is some complex story telling.
Cannot, under any circumstances say how much I enjoy your work. You are so many fantastic blends of humor, depth, and love that it is pretty amazing. Thank you to no end for your work.
This video, for some reason, made me reflect on just how far Mikey has come since those early reviews. I had a real love/hate relationship with early Movies With Mikey episodes, where sometimes it swung hard enough in to hate that I unsubscribed from the channel. But dang, dude. Good job on everything so far.
BUT DID YOU KNOW? You make the best reviews, brother. I can't wait for you to hit 1 million subs, I can feel it coming in my bones. WE WERE HERE FIRST BOIIIIS. It's just lovely hearing a writers perspective at such a high class level.
Saw the title and I thought we were going to jump into how well it''s edited, hits beats, classic Edgar Wright style shit that hits home every time, but instead you ran us through an emotional gauntlet on a film I had only ever seen as a witty classic comedy. Nice
I was 18 when this film came out. I was living on the Oregon coast and my high school class went on a day-trip to Ashland for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. We arrived with 3 hours to wait for the performance to start. How did I kill the time, you ask? By going to see this film in the local theatre. I watched Shaun of the Dead before going to see a production of Oedipus Complex, a grisly comedy followed immediately by a grisly tragedy. I will never forget that day.
Only just discovering this channel (WHY?!) and I find it genuinely brilliant, mostly because 3 videos in I agree with nearly every word spoken. Thank you for all of this and lending further credibility to films that I too love. As someone who teaches story and film analysis every deep dive, with a touch of personal connection, is thoroughly appreciated.
Love you Mikey. I've been rewatching your entire series this week and this was the perfect way to end it. ...until probably another two months and I'll watch them all again.
I found my way to this channel from Lindsay Ellis and Cinema Wins. I hope you're making a decent enough living that you can continue to keep doing this, because you are just crushing this shit. Keep it up. (When I get some loot, I'm signing up for your Patreon)
Mikey, let me take a few minutes to thank you for this channel. I have yet to watch a Movies with Mikey, without your insights having enriched my enjoyment of the movies. I’m sad to finally find out your struggles with MS. You are brave for sharing and I hope you feel our support.
Man, this series is so sick, you add new dimensions to films and talk about them in such a cool way that it's literally impossible to get bored of it...
And so the trilogy comes to a close :P I love this film, and it's cool to see you do a breakdown of it. While my personal favourite of the trilogy is still Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead was the first movie I ever really got, kind of obsessed with. When I was younger, I think one of my brothers managed to get it on DVD and I just spent ages going through all the bonus features and seeing all the extra stuff and behind the scenes and getting so oddly interested in learning about how it was made and eventually came to be. It was the movie that got me interested in movies, as something more than just a thing to watch. Also, god, I'd love to see an Edgar Wright spy thriller called Black Forest, that sounds fantastic!
Just had to say this one thing: When you did your little dance after the "This movie is so indie..." line, i absolutly did the same move. loved it. also the rest of the video
I had a similar introduction to Shaun of the Dead and it is also one of my favourite movies, period. I have been hoping you would do this since you did the other Cornetto trilogy movies and it makes me so happy this exists now. Thank you as always for this awesome video.
There is a moment of foreshadowing so subtle in the scene when we are introduced to Philip at the electronic shop. Right after he says "Well we look forward to seeing you on Sunday" he smiles because he's actually looking forward to it. That smile in the context of the conversation says so much about the history between the two characters, it's so well acted by Bill Nighy.
You are the best film review/analysis UA-camr. I've always been a huge Edgar Wright and Simon peg fan. These movies are some my favorites and have thought/seen about them to death yet you still bring up some points that have never crossed my mind and force me to love them even more.
One of my favorite creators critiquing one of my favorite films. As soon as I saw the thumbnail, I got excited. And you didn't disappoint. :) Well done, Mikey!
Mikey, have I mentioned recently that you are the bee's knees, the true inspiration? Like, I'm literally doing my honors podcast thesis on discussing movies and how they can affect and shape us and I absolutely KNOW that I would never have found that idea or passion without your channel. Like, solid shout-out to you, my dude, for being the CoolestTM. Also, I'm definitely going to do a Lessons Animation Taught Us response, so I'll be not-subtle when that eventually happens. Thanks for being cool!
THANK YOU for these videos u are the best real life character and these videos professionally fangirling on the Edgar Wright empire make me cry every time........ Haven't rewatched Shaun in a while... The continuous cornetto cycle must continue I'm off to watch it again
This film is really relatable for me right now. 25 years old, work full time at a dead end job, still live at home, Mrs has left me for some older guy with money, all my friends and family are happily in relationships. Getting married and having kids etc. Could do with a zombie apocalypse right now...
Congrats on both making a great video about this and also not including that disembowling scene that completely traumatized my teen self for several months!
These movies inspired you to create this series, and watching you talk about these movies, which were my favorites as a child, inspires me to keep writing my own stuff that is already inspired by these things but now to deeper levels. It’s real interesting. Thanks b
Hey, I've been watching a lot of your videos while I work, and I just want to say that I really like your voice/cadence. I get overstimulated easily so i usually put stuff on that can kind of calm me down, which means I'm usually limited to whispery asmr videos. Yours aren't that, obviously, but even when you are clearly excited about a thing, it's a warm fuzzy thing instead of an overstimulating spazzy thing. So thanks for that.
You need to watch the Spaced DVD box set with commentary the dogs don't look up things started on the set of Spaced. There is even a shot in Spaced with the dog Colin where he won't look up. This is also the place we as the audience learn about "fried gold"
15:35 Godammit. You got me. (Also this is my favorite movie and a perfect film. Thank you for reaffirming my opinions. It's really echo-y in here, and I love it.)
Thank you so much, Mikey, for making this video. I've been waiting for it, of course, but I really think you did it justice. As difficult as it has to be to review the Cornetto Trilogy in your style, you really have done them all great justice. You're amazing!
Just to note, I originally just wanted to say "Wow, I've been waiting for this video" etc, but watching it really turned me around. The only way to in turn do this video justice was with a thank-you. I don't know how he does it, but Mikey is incredible!
At this point there are 171 thumb downs. How can this be? How can you not bask in Mikey's passion for the Cornetto Trilogy, especially if you appreciate the films yourself? I guess there are just a percentage of people who are trolls. I love this video and the other Edgar Wright videos. Thank you for your passion!
This film that I rented at Hollywood Video without thinking too much affected me so much to the point it is still one of my favorites of all time easily in my top 3. Great review everytime you cut to Bill Nigh or his mom I bawled.
I think that cornetto comercial at the beginning uncalled for (unless it was called for in which case excellent job!) but the rest of the video was amazing. Great analysis!
oh my god, Mikey, I absolutely love you. I have not met anyone who knew I Monster without my having shown them. That group is absolutely amazing and for some reason, I'm not even remotely surprised that you've heard them. *high 5*
According to the bonus features on the DVD, Diane actually did live. After she came to her senses from her blind charge out into the zombie horde, using David's leg as a club, she ended up climbing up a tree where the zombies couldn't get her.
So, this is your first video I've seen and pretty much every minute of it I wanted to punch that like button, only to realise I already did. The second time I punched the subscribe button, but then... Well, I might have to bingewatch all your other stuff now.
Bro, Edgar Wright retweeted this video. You've made it.
i loved it when James Gunn commented on Lindsey Ellis' video on Guardians of the Galaxy 2

His life is complete, lucky man
Hearing that this movie is responsible for "dogs can't look up" made me laugh to the point of tears at my desk at work.
They can't tho.
Three words: cats in trees.
It wasn't responsible for it. That argument was around long before SOTD was made; in the UK anyway.
Dogs can look up, but pigs can’t.
ditto
True, it was actually my first zombie movie lol
I also really like how the zombies represent something bad about Shaun and he must defeat them to overcome it
Sorry but Diane did survive... They released a comic saying that she hid in a tree and survived by eating Davids leg.
You are kidding. Right?

Worst youtube review of Cornetto ice cream ever. 25 minutes and he didn't even eat one.
I love you people, I don't even know you.
that's why you love them

Dianne did survive! They did a little DVD extra about her climbing up a tree and eating bits off David's leg until everything blew over.

And so the trilogy comes to a close :P
I love this film, and it's cool to see you do a breakdown of it.
Man, I'm learning so much by following this channel. Cheers!
BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOR TOO LONG!!!!! SO HAPPY YOU'RE DOING! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Just had to say this one thing: When you did your little dance after the "This movie is so indie..." line, i absolutly did the same move. loved it. also the rest of the video
Filmjoy, don't ever stop. Love you, dude.
I had a similar introduction to Shaun of the Dead and it is also one of my favourite movies, period. I have been hoping you would do this since you did the other Cornetto trilogy movies and it makes me so happy this exists now. Thank you as always for this awesome video.
Never stop making these.... And if you ever do, let us know where you go. This channel is awesome. The Cornetto trilogy videos are the best.
Rewatching this for the millionth time and I hope you're doing ok.
LMAO at starting "dogs can't look up." I only like two zombie movies, this is one of them. 10/10 film.
Nikki M. Solis is the other Zombieland?
Just in case you didn't realise, the chunky teen staff member at the shop is Rafe Spall - who plays one of the Andy's in TWE
Paddy Robinson-Griffin Hot Fuzz. You meant Hot Fuzz.
pulling an all nighter and these videos are guiding me thru this long night
There is a moment of foreshadowing so subtle in the scene when we are introduced to Philip at the electronic shop. Right after he says "Well we look forward to seeing you on Sunday" he smiles because he's actually looking forward to it. That smile in the context of the conversation says so much about the history between the two characters, it's so well acted by Bill Nighy.
Every so often, sometimes when I'm having a rough day, I revisit fav MwM videos. Like this one. And it helps.
Thanks b
That acronym joke is the bee's knees, Mike.
Good stuff. Top shelf.
This movie and Baby Driver have to be in my top 5 and its all thanks to the lovely Edgar Wright!
Here's to many more years of this channel, Mikey. Here's to your continued success. *raises pint*
Shaun of the Dead analyzed by Mickey with Belle and Sebastian in the background is good for my soul.
Which song is it?
God, you have such a way with words... That last sentence was incredible.
Your vid essay style is amazing! Youve earned myfollowing!
this is my favorite movie channel. there's a few that i love, but this one is simply amazing. keep it up! ♥
15:35 Godammit. You got me. (Also this is my favorite movie and a perfect film. Thank you for reaffirming my opinions. It's really echo-y in here, and I love it.)
In the words of Count Dooku:
“I’ve been looking forward to this...”
Coming to your channel late in the game. Much like i came to Spaced all things Simon, Nick, and Edgar in 2009. I feel all of this. Keep it coming
I think that cornetto comercial at the beginning uncalled for (unless it was called for in which case excellent job!) but the rest of the video was amazing. Great analysis!
This was so sweet Mikey, congrats on five years!
oh my god, Mikey, I absolutely love you.
Great video, it's so cool you got to interview Edgar Wright!
So, this is your first video I've seen and pretty much every minute of it I wanted to punch that like button, only to realise I already did. The second time I punched the subscribe button, but then...
Well, I might have to bingewatch all your other stuff now.
AND SO, THE CORNETTO TRILOGY IS COMPLETE!
Mikey, the world is a better place with you in it.
I 100% agree with every single thing you had to say about this movie. Absolutely 100%.
Without a doubt, one of the best movies, OF ALL TIME!
