    I'm in the army myself, and I can tell you this dialogue is spot on. It's EXACTLY the way the drill sergeants and platoon sergeants talked to us in basic training and AIT. That's why I think this is the best Vietnam War movie. The dialogue is so realistic.

      so true, brother.
      Except, my DS and PLT Sgts were crazy alcohol drinking, redman/skoal dip-in, demons.
      And for the fatties; water and grits for breakfasts, #10 MRE tuna and crackers with water, and dinner, fish and greens with water.
      No dressing, no candies, no nuts, and no Orange Juice till you drop weight and can run two miles in under 16 minutes.
      Oh, the horror.

      @@gsfbffxpdhhdf7043 If you say so. The REAL Army ended somewhere around 1970. Prior to that, they could still give the recruits attitude adjustments. My Dad served with the 101st Airborne in Vietnam. He went through Basic Training in 1965. The Drill Sergeants were a lot tougher on them back then.
      By contrast, my brother-in-law went to Basic Training in 1987. He came home and told me that they weren't allowed to curse at, hit, or yell at the recruits. He also said that Basic was a joke. All I know for sure is that when I graduated from USMC Boot Camp, I was one squared away individual. When my brother-in-law graduated from Basic, he came back more disorganized and sloppy than when he went.

    Just read a little on the Chieu Hoi program. He wasn't clying when he said Hahn was going to eat their rations, go back out into the valley, and start hunting them. It's estimated that only about 25% of defections under the program were genuine. The rest likely did exactly what he described: Hung out, are their rations, then went back out and started hunting GIs.

      For anyone saying doc being a SPC is racial thing , your heads in the wrong place 68w at the platoon level are usually SPC, a company medic who travels with the HQ element is usually a Sergeant, and the higher ranks usually get moved to the battalion aid station, now the black combat medic being in the field who’s a SPC and the white combat medic who’s at the aid station, that might be racial, but their rank isn’t particularly not in this context, this movie focuses mostly on one squad, the platoon sergeant and medic are usually attached at the hip, so seeing how the platoon sergeant SFC Worcester is seen with this squad most of the movie SSG Frantz is either one of the senior squad leaders and Worcester it grooming him for a PSG role or he’s his favorite Squad leader. You can see all 4 squad leaders being briefed by the Lt and psg later in the movie.

Funny thing: the 1981 novel "13th Valley" by John Del Veccio (it's about an imaginary operation in the A Shau Valley by the 101st) featured a scene early on at "FNG School" that had a Chieu Hoi Sapper performing this very trick from the 'edification' of the new guys;

    The Chieu Hoi Program was an initiative by the South Vietnamese to encourage defection by the Viet Cong and their supporters to the side of the Government during the Vietnam War.
    In other words, surrender/defection. However, there was this sneaking suspicion that the enemies of the U.S and the former South Vietnamese Government were taking advantage of the program to gain intelligence/monetary gains to further the war.
