    Great film. You'll never know unless you were actually there, but from what I have read about Vietnam I think This film captures the blood, guts and sheer futility of that war very accurately, perhaps better than any other Vietnam War movie ever made. This scene was brilliant - those beautiful Huey's with the unmistakable snarl of their turbines and distinctive chopping rotor sound, the gut wrenching fear and tension on the faces of the GI's who know they are heading into the jaws of hell, all to the backdrop of that iconic Vietnam era anthem from the Animals, a song that ironically enough was banned from air play on the Armed Forces Vietnam radio network.

    I remember cycling to school and in the distance hearing a Huey flying towards me, I think it was during a training with a lot of NATO troops. Anyway, this sound is overwhelming and magic. ‘ 30 years ago, but still remember. When I was in Capetown South Africa, I took the combat flight tour in one of the Hueys that served in the movie “ Apocalypse Now”. Best tging I did. I was sitting on the side with my legs hanging out and w were flying so f@cking fast and low.

    did the war pretty much become a war of attrition at this point in 69? Or was it always like that?

    • @pats3071
      @pats3071 7 років тому +4

      This was one the last major battles of the war, US, Australia and its allies started to slowly pull troops out around this time, leaving most large operations to the ARVN and CIDG troops. In fact, what this movie doesn't show is that the ARVN were the ones who actually took the hill.
      What did you mean by war of attrition, can you phrase the question better?
      The main goals of the US and allies from the beginning to the end was to win the hearts and minds of the South Vietnamese populace, and prevent the Vietcong from influencing them. To fight the NVA in traditional warfare, to deny the enemy supply routes and to prevent the Vietcong from holding any territory.

      The ARVNs did not take the hill. Where are you getting that information? They were to the northwest to block the NVA retreat. If you want to read a factual book read, The Crouching Beast by Frank Boccia, a real hero. He was the Platoon Leader of B Co, 3/187 that fought its way to the top.

      Creek, the United States and allies had won the war for the populated areas. Greatly. After one Heavy B52 bombing run against North Vietnam, the North asked for mercy at the Paris Peace conference. The South Vietnamese had been told for years the Americans and allies were going leave. The S was made ready. And the S held up fairly for a few years. The demon o crats in Washington refused to send the agreed-upon replacement supplies to the S in 1975. Please research it. Today these demon o crats are far worse. Deuteronomy 28 applies.

    1950년 한국전쟁에도 쓰이던 수송헬기 60년대 베트남전쟁에서 맹활약하면서 개발을 거듭했다. 그래서 지금은 공격헬기에 까지 이르렀다. 지상작전에서 헬기없는 현대 전쟁은 생각조차 할 수 없을 정도로 헬기는 군 작전능력에서 필수다. 그런데 어째서 한국군과 국방부와 방위산업체들은 헬기 개발을 하지 않고 있었던가? 수리온 마린온 성능에서 너무나 많은 문제가 있어서 그 심각성은 그치지 않고 계속제기되었다. 결국 엘리트 해병대원의 목숨만 앗아가는 허망한 짓을 확인화게 되었다. 왜 한국군은 좋은 성능의 헬기를 갖지 못하였는가 왜 허구헌날 미제 헬기만 사들여야 하고 미국이 던져주는 것만 쳐다봐야 하는 신세가 되었는가 따져보니까 우리가 자초한 것이더라. 다 결국은 우리가 그런 결정을 한 것이었다. 미제무기 수입국 세계1위도 결국은 우리 손으로 결정한 것이었다. 일본보다 30년 이상 뒤쳐진 신세가 된 것도 따지고 보면 다 우리 군과 군수뇌부와 국방부와 청와대가 그런 결정을 한 것이었다.

      The war was a complete waste of human lives and money. McNamara knew this in an early stage, it is well documented (today!). There was nothing correct about it, except for the people making money out of it, the cigar smoking directors in the board rooms of the miliary-industrial complex. That is also why El BJ lied continuously about it to the American people. Worst politics of the USA ever, although they repeated it partly in Afghanistan and Iraq.

      Mark, be assured fear is real enough in any war. But the acting and overdoing it of these actors was just that- overdoing it. Ya actually get somewhat used to it. If this movie was instead real footage, those guys were all on their first time out. Fear wasn't shown to that extent,
      nor did fear rule anything. This is more of a commie propaganda attempt.
      But ya, fear existed. It's wearysome with so many reports leading people to believe Americans are frightful.
      Just the opposite.
      I'm not including the actions of the top decision makers.
