Yeah I really wish I had a cheaper rig for the purpose of those video. Was going to take a photo of all the gear but honestly thought it would be a pain in the ass to shoot. This was just me half assing a thumbnail tbh lol.
@@OXFOOT lol no worries, it's good info dude! I just thought it was funny :-). I love those luci lights man. I have a few of those and they're awesome. I especially like the ones that charge both via solar or via usb.
Yeah I figured more people would call me out on that. What ever. Yeah I love those Luci lights. We have a few of them. I’m not sure if ours charge by USB, I’ve only ever used solar.
But yeah “take it from me the guy that spent 50k on his rig, I really know budget gear” lol.
LoL. Just watched this and thought the exact same thing! Budget overland gear for beginners (standing in front of $80-100K worth of rigs). It's all good, though. The information was solid and gives me some ideas. I really like that remote for the winch!
Here’s a few things that I found to be budget friendly, but good quality
RTic cooler. I use a 65 which will hold about 5 days of food
Kelty self inflatable sleeping pads.
Small Webber propane grill
Over window screens. Keeps bugs out, keeps condensation out, fresh air in if you sleep in vehicle.
Quick boiler.
OnX off road subscription. $30 a year and it’ll tell you where all the trails are and works without cell service.
KC led off-road driving lights. Finally, I can see!

+1 on the RTIC cooler. Especially instead of a 2,000 dollar fridge like most of the yuppies run. It keeps food cold forever and is very very very affordable

So far mine has held up pretty well I really like them. Keep them in the truck and sometimes I’ll even bust it out at a fast food spot when I’m on road trips.

15:35 if you look on the back side of the head of the tire gauge, there is a spot to push the Schrader valve in with.
To deflate the tires other than where I deflated?
The light for 28$ seems like a steal with all the versatility
Yeah there’s a lot of stuff out there that isn’t expensive but is really versatile. The expensive companies would like you to think otherwise.

Yeah love those lanterns. I’ve never had amazing luck with walkies but these have been the most useable for me so far.
I agree on two of these items for sure. I’ve been using Ozark Trail 3 man for motorcycle camping for literally years with no trouble at all. Easy up and down and it just works. Also, have had an ENO 2 person hammock, also have the ENO brand tree saver straps and even the bug cocoon (absolutely worth it during yellow fly season!!!) Good info. Thanks!!!
I’ve got a Harley I’ve been trying to eventually turn into a scrambler to do offroad camping and all that with. Used to do it on my old ninja when I lived in the Appalachian mtns. Always used a hammock and a really light sleeping bag but the weather there was much warmer than Colorado.
Eventually I’d love to get a GS but I have so many expensive hobbies as is. A GS1200 and KTM 1190 are my grail bikes.

Nice. Well, welcome. Just know you don’t have to buy all the expensive stuff the influencers buy. See a ton of people make that mistake. Do your research and you can probably find knock offs versions of everything that aren’t bad.
Also if I was to buy another 4Runner and do it all over again I would just buy an SR5. I don’t use the locker enough to justify the extra money and I’ve never really used crawl control.

X-bull makes a lot of good products, I’ve been using their traction pads for years and I even scored a winch with wireless remote and synthetic cable for $300 bucks, I also use their deflator which is basically an arb and it has been great 👍
Yeah I’ve been pretty happy with their products, my only complaint I’ve had with them is that their traction boards just don’t stack very tight together. Other than that I’ve been pretty happy.

I also wanted to know what shovel is the one mounted on the blue 4runner? I've already been thru two of them...
Yeah I try to show when the budget stuff works and when it doesn’t. Most of the time the budget stuff is completely fine, sometimes even better.
Both of us have just regular hardware shovels. The one in the black one is wrapped with I believe duct tape or some sort of black tape. I had one I got at garden center and it’s lasted me a long time. I plasti dipped it black but it came in like a regular wood grain color.

Got the 13K XBull winch on my jeep and love it, works great! I did remove the steel cable and put on synthetic.......Great video, I subbed ya.
Yeah I honestly don’t know how I didn’t think of just taking a cheaper winch and replacing the cable. A lot of people have let me know in the comments how easy it is. Thanks!

Definitely! I got my 4Runner 2 years ago, started the "build" shortly after that, and I STILL need to accumulate more required gear to be able to go out with the local groups.
I use the JT brooks pro tire deflators. Love them

Yeah I think some people have mentioned that since I filmed this. The only ones I had seen at the time had the steel cable but I believe you can even worst case swap the cable out which is a pretty good option. If I did it again I think I’d go for the badlands with the synthetic.

Yeah, they also make some that are refillable from the factory. Technically the ones I filled up in heat I’ve learned are illegal to transport when you refill them. Don’t ask me if I still do it once I learned that fact though.

Yeah the bag is really massive but it’s kept me warm down to -5. It’s my primary bag for winter camping because just pulling the zipper down a bit makes 20-30 degrees comfortable too.
I like the wench, sleeping bag, stove, off road lights, your going to make them up grade their quality & quantity!

Nice, I e only sept in my cabin once in my 4Runners and that was because of mountian lions. Good for you making that work.

Great video. The only comment I have is regarding refueling these 1lb tanks. Legally (DOT rules) can't transport these refilled propane tanks. Legality aside, I am not sure if the green 1lb tanks are designed to be refilled multiple times. Personally, I have seen the green bottles rust within couple of months and the safety valves pop quite easily and leak propane after few months of non-use. Maybe it will be fine but Flame King sells a refillable version.
Yeah I have heard a lot about that. I really only do it maybe twice before replacing them but I may eventually end up looking into the refillable one. I know they are quite a bit more but not sure how they are different from the regular green ones. I’ll have to look. Thanks for the info!
I used to have screw on deflators like yours in a small black leather pouch; they are lost now. Now I open my tore repair kit and use the tool to unscrew the valve cores. The tires deflate in about the same amount of total time (one at a time instead of all at once) and it is a lot easier than I thought it would be.
Yeah that’s a good one. My first ever time deflating I had one of those pullers but I didn’t know what I was doing and went down to like 8 PSI. With a lot more experience now I bet that would be incredibly useful tool!
Now I’ve got a 4tire inflator/deflator set up which is totally hands off and really easy but that would be good in a pinch.

First take-away from this video...putting stickers on the tailgate edge. Never would have thought about putting some there. Aside from that great vid, I really want to get into overlanding to enjoy the outdoors more.
Yeah people give me stickers and I just don’t like the aesthetic of it in my window. It makes its way into videos so people still see them but I don’t have tons of stickers in my window all the time!
Yeah I think that prices on stuff will come back down this spring. Everything camping related has gotten inflated due to supply chain issues this year.
I admit I was laughing at the massive sleeping bag lol but only because I have a similar bag lol. It’s not as bad as yours though lol Mine is from Sportsmans Warehouse and I believe it’s there in-house brand something Ridge and it’s the “Elk Hunter” its rated down to -35*Fahrenheit. I absolutely love it! Its flannel on the inside but canvas on the outside, it has big brass zippers and definitely keeps me warm. I use it in my Hennessy Hammock with an under quilt for when I camp in the dead of winter Dec-Feb at 7,000ft right at the edge of the tree line. Last year and the year before the temperature dropped to almost 0*Fahrenheit and I was toasty warm all night lol using the bathroom the next morning was a different story lol my next bag is the same brand but its called the “Deer Hunter” and it’s rated to 0*Fahrenheit so I use it in the early spring and late fall. The rest of the year which is mainly summer I just use a wool blanket or something light.
There’s a sportsman’s warehouse not to far from me. It’s on my list if places for the “overland gear at” series. I’ll have to check that out. What you are describing sounds a lot like the ones that I talked about in the cabellas video as well as ones I’ve seen at some other places. The flannel for sure helps.
I used to hammock camp too but I was in college and too broke to afford a proper sleeping bag so I usually avoided the winter in the hammock and just stuck to the ground tent.
Awesome video content. But may I recommend you use some lighting? Maybe use some of those Harbor Freight lights with a defuser to brighten your videos. Hard to see the products without good lighting.
Yeah this was a huge complaint with this video. I really didn’t know what I was doing back then. I had only had the camera a few days at that point. I’d like to think I’ve gotten better but it’s really more my editing back then and trying to shoot RAW in 100% manual mode. Maybe my new videos aren’t much better though.
I tried that same setup for onbaord air and had issues with my bolts not holding into the rivnuts so I finally took mine out and going to figure some other onboard mount setup later.
I do have to note I found it interesting that the black Pro had the standard valance on the front and the silver off road has the Pro style valance on the front lol.

Ha they are both TRD off roads I believe. Mine is the silver one and I added that front badge pretty soon after buying it. I honestly just think it looks much better with that. Never was a massive fan of the all silver grille on my truck.
Which bolts? The ones holding the compressor down? I hadn’t run into any loosening yet.
@@OXFOOT the method I used I found on trail4runner.com and they install rivet nuts to secure through the foot holes on the compressor
Yeah they installed theirs reverse of that I did. I almost did it the way they did but figured it would work fine just bolted in like a battery considering it was lighter than a battery.
By reverse I meant the other direction as mine. Theirs was big side facing into the engine bay.

I have the smittybilt compressor installed in the same location and it has never failed me.
Yeah I’ve been really happy with it so far. With the C4 tray I used, I don’t see why almost any compressor wouldn’t be put in the engine bay.
Can recommend the coleman bags. Both of my kids have one and it got down into the 40's F a few weeks ago over night and they were just fine.

I have that ham radio.and I had my county fire channels installed and I use it as my portable radio for the fire department
Yeah I love using it especially for emergencies. I hear there’s something related to avalanche safety channel in my area which would be nice when I get back to winter camping. I’ll have to research more and see if there actually is one.
You can use the Baofeng radio without a license. You would have to program only the FRS channels and if you program any of the channels like Forest service, or local police, you can listen. Keep in mind like you said, if you push the talk button and are caught without a license is where you could get in trouble.
I’m really just saying that because I don’t want people about there buying them and thinking they can just cuss and do all types of stuff on the ham channels and then tell everyone this “oxfoot” guy online is telling everyone to buy these ham radios and use them without a license. It’s understandable that you can use them that way without a license but if you don’t plan on getting a HAM license you might be better off with a FRS radio.

Congrats on the new 4Runner! I've been wanting to make a video on all my favorite companies and what I recommend to people but I just haven't gotten around to it with this other big video I'm doing going on. Paint protection you're talking to the wrong guy lol. Don't look at my 4Runner too close ha. I've got all types of branches and deep cuts. Have you ever looked into G.O.A.T. truck armor? I have a few buddies that run it and they really like it. I think I may do a video on that soon.
Also as far as rooftop tents... That sort of the video I've been focused on lately. I've been checking out tons of them lately getting in an checking them all out. If you're going for a hardshell I fell like I know most of them in and out at this point. If you're unsure on what to get and just want something for the summer while you think, Tepui's are always a great option and then you can resell them on craigslist or return it within a year if you buy it from REI.
Ceramic coating on the paint is a great investment
The reason the butane stove doesn’t do well in the cold is because butane is only good to about 40*Fahrenheit. Below that and it becomes a liquid not a gas so it won’t work for the burners. But you can use a mixture of butane and propane which comes pre-mixed in special canisters. Why would you want to use a mixture instead of just propane? You ask lol it’s because butane is much hotter than propane when being used as a flame to cook on, like more than a thousand degrees hotter. So by mixing them you get butane that burns at lower temps and propane that burns at super high temps. Best of both.
I’ve only messed with the butane stoves a few times in my life and have had very missed experiences with them. Sometimes I live them sometimes not so much. I just bought a butane stove for another video I’m doing so I’ll have to look into that mixture for sure. Thanks for the insight!

Honestly at this point my favorite is just cooking on this little fire pit we have. Pan straight to the firepit. Two birds one stone.

The front bumper on mine (the silver one) is the C4 fab low profile with the mid height tube bar option and 30” light bar cut out option. The black one is a victory 4x4 lo profile bumper which I believe doesn’t have any options.

BTW, the Baofeng supports Ham, GMRS, and FRS. That single Baofeng can replace your Midlands, or also communicate with them. All it takes is the Chirp software and a USB cable to configure your Baofeng.
Damn what? That’s crazy. I’ll have to look into that. I know one time I went to a certain frequency and I was able to communicate with a regular family hand held but I heard it was actually highly illegal?
@@OXFOOT It's as illegal as driving beyond the speed limit, except, it's not really going to harm anyone, as opposed to, say, driving at 90mph, and getting into an accident.
The illegality occurs when you TRANSMIT on GMRS/FRS on this device. The very specific regulation states that to transmit on GMRS/FRS, the antenna must be fixed/permanent; whereas, on the Baofeng, the antenna is removable/replaceable with a "larger" antenna.
When you consider the amount of FCC "police" in remote areas, and them having to prove that YOU were the one transmitting, the likelihood of being legally fined/punished/scolded is quite low.
The government really does have more important things to do, or, at least, they should. :-)
Still, the risk is there. It's up to you to decide it it's worth taking.

If you’re talking about how to install it in the engine bay I have a video on how to do that now. I believe it was the next uploaded video after this video.
I’m sure the method I’m using would work on most compressors, just might have to change some minor things if it’s bulkier.

I saw some videos about the hazards of refilling the green propane canisters, as they're rated for single-use only, and are recommended to not re-fill. Just FYI.
Yeah I’ve read a lot up on that. After a ton of research I’ve come to the conclusion that I would only refill it a few times. There’s a lot of stories going around about someone’s cousins best friend having an accident but I’ve not personally seen enough to make me not do it. There’s always a risk when handling propane. At this point I wouldn’t recommend doing it more than two or so times.
I’ve been going through all the budget videos and I definitely appreciate this one. How did you change the air compressor fitting and how is it working of you? Does it get weak or anything?
I’m about to upload a video soon explaining how I did the compressor. And all that in dash. The compressor fitting is super easy though. You just cut the old fitting from the hose and replace it with a new fitting. After you put the new fitting on the hose you just tighten it down with a little screw driver based hose clamp.
You could also try removing the whole thing at the base of the hose where it connects to the compressor and trying it that way. Didn’t do this but I’ve heard it works.

Yeah I’ve had a few people remind me if that since I released the video. That’s a good idea honestly and I would definitely recommend that for the harborfreight one. Someone even told me that harbor freight had a synthetic line they carry.
@@OXFOOT I honestly can't say, I live in England! Over here we get a lot of winches that come with steel rope and we just buy the synthetic to go onto the winch, one thing to note though is if the brake is inside the drum it is less suitable for synthetic, as the drum gets hot and can melt the rope, so that's a great video to do and give the local viewers something to think about when choosing their winch.

I was a hammock camper for years, I totally understand. It takes me a mattress pad on top of a mattress to be as comfortable as I was in a hammock.

I use an Xbull 13000 pound winch with synthetic line, it has been awesome and only costs about 350 dollars.
Yeah I’ll have to look into that. I’ve been happy with my XBulls traction boards so if their winches are anywhere near as quality as them then I’d say it’s a solid purchase.
@@OXFOOT I have used mine a twice now for off road self recovery, twice more for recovering someone else on the trail, once for lifting an engine block and several times for pulling bushes, towing cars out of ditches, and yanking down a storm struck problem tree ect. been about four months and its had zero issues doing basically anything asked of it and it for sure isn't getting the pretty gentle life of a show piece!
This popped up as a suggested video. Solid gear, but the Midland gmrs radios realistically have a 10 mile range (not their fault aside from typical bad advertising) and do require a fcc license, a no test gmrs license.
Yeah this was a while back, I really don’t use HAM anymore, I still bring it for emergency channels but I don’t use them. I will be switching to GMRS unit that stays in the vehicle very soon.
But yeah I guess I didn’t know as much about GMRS back when I uploaded this video.
I also picked up the midlands from Walmart and used them without knowing about licensing until I became a ham. Once they drop the price for the gmrs I think it will be the way to go for most people. I use my yaesu ftm 400 in the truck and it works out great for ham and gmrs (listening only of course, that would be "illegal" to transmit)
I'd be good with backseat delete, build a platform with slide out storage, inflatable air pad, sleeping bag and i can sleep in the 4runner. i dont take up much space
You know I really considered that. Goose gear makes a rear seat delete platform that turns the whole back into a flat surface. I did years of sleeping in the back of my cars before I found out about rooftop tents and how comfortable they are. But I don’t mind sleeping in the back with a $50 REI back packing mattress and a sleeping bag.

Yeah goose gear is super expensive. If I had the time I think making one myself would also be really great.

Just an FYI, Harbor Freight has a 12000 lb Synthetic winch cable available, I wanna say it is sub $150 and the hawse fairlead is like $40. You could get a steel cabled winch and after awhile upgrade the line and fairlead for a decently low price. and of course they have a wireless kit for them as well. something to think about.
That’s a good point. I had no clue they even had synthetic lines there. I’ll have to look into that. Maybe talk about it in a future video. I hear the cables aren’t the hardest thing to replace either.
@@OXFOOT I can't imagine they're too hard, I saw they had an APEX synthetic 12k winch too, but it's obviously more expensive than the steel cable kind.
Jeff T once you use steel cable on the drum, it's not good to switch to synthetic line. Cable can mark/damage the drum causing premature failure from cuts&abrasion to the synthetic line.

Yeah I think the synthetic line is the way to go. I like my smittybilt but I know folks with the Harbor freight synthetic winch who like theirs a lot.
Bought two sets of the XBULL boards before going on the Kentucky adventure tour earlier this month. Both sets cracked towards their ends on first use for me. Conditions were heavy mud with some rocks in there but both recovery situations didn't put any flex on them. Hopefully its just bad luck for me as I've also seen many videos with successful stress tests
Damn that sucks. I haven’t had that kind of experience. They might have some quality control issues then because mine have had years of use and are still alright. XBull made a few types, were the ones you got like mine or did they look different?
Like I said I’ve had friends who have had theirs crack, so I get it.
Same exact ones off Amazon but Orange for my color choice. I'll keep using them in the meantime however until they're completely clapped out lol
They were meant as a quick stop-gap until I can pick up a set of the maxtrax extremes. Really hope others have better like like you as well!
Damn, alright well... I hope people have the same experience I had. I love my maxtrax though. I can’t see these breaking, but I’ve seen videos of people breaking them too. I guess it’s just sometimes they get broken and other times they don’t.

For what it’s worth, I keep a HAM radio with me for outdoor emergencies. I’m not licensed, but I don’t use it either. It’s ONLY for emergencies. There are HAM operators all around the world, and if I can’t make contact with assistance using normal means, I’ll resort to HAM. Life safety only.
I have a video I’m planning now that talks about this. It’s kind of like a survivalist thing. I’m sure I’ll get hate for it but I now recommend people get these and do exactly this.

Cool video. Quick question about the 1lb propane tanks. Is it safe to refill those? Have you had any issues with it after refilling it?
So far we haven’t had any issues. It’s best if you make the small tanks cold so the propane rushes to them. The only issues I’ve had is that they are actually not the easiest to fill. But yeah they function properly once you get into the grove of filling them.
Just a note on this. They do make purpose 1 lb tanks for refilling but they are expensive. I refill my basic ones, not the purpose ones, about 5 or 6 times, then toss just to be safe. You can find used ones everywhere. Also, I know everyone refills them including me but there is a warning on the tanks about a big fine for reusing/refilling them.

I think 5-6 times is a good number. I make sure to fill it aimed away from me and all that. As safe as I can.
From Australia, I am yet to see someone from the states show that they use swags or do reviews on them. I think that for the cold climates they are better than tents. Maybe you could purchase a swag and compare tent vs swag in winter. nice vid tho
I actually hadn’t heard of these until you mentioned it. I can’t tell if it’s much different from what we call bivvi. It’s just like a single person tent that rolls up into a backpack? Our bivvi tents roll up and have a sleeping bag inside. I’ll have to do more research and see exactly what the difference is. I’d love to test it out with my motorcycle next spring.
It looks like swags are a much heavier material. Very rugged where the bivvi is super light weight and meant for back packing.
@@OXFOOT Swags are heavy duty and I wouldn't consider it a light pack. You can roll them up with your sheets inside or sleeping bag, most allow for a thicker mattress if you decide to upgrade for confort. I have a double swag which sleeps 2 but great for 1 when you have too much to drink that night and the stars are spinning.
I’ll have to look into that. That would be perfect for offroading. Doesn’t matter if its a heavy bag because it’s in your truck not on your back.

I’m guessing you meant “inexpensive” but yes I did make that video however at the time I hadn’t figured out the wiring situation so I was just running it with clamps. My neighbors are jeep peps. swear by their badlands winches. After watching a few videos I went and picked up the APEX12 for $500 on Black Friday this year. Now just to figure out what bumper I want to mount it on.
