The What If hostage lines are Aliens references I believe. “Game over, man! Game over” is a direct quote from Hudson (played by Bill Paxton) and “Kill me. Please kill me” is said by a marine they found just before a xenomorph bursts from her chest
"Parker shut up and dial 911" is still one of the funniest lines ever, he had a chance to call the police on his own, but calls Peter to tell him to call the police lol
At this point, I assume Jameson is just used to telling Peter and Robbie Robertson to do everything for him. 😂😂😂 Like what was he thinking calling Peter before the cops?
33:58 I love this part. Black Cat willing to take rhino on her own because she understands that Peter’s wife is in danger. Spider-Man understanding that the city comes before his needs. This is a very underrated moment imo.

God, the dialogue in this game is so good compared to what we get now with a lot of these games what happened?
I think it's actually because a lot of the drive to make art in mainstream culture has slowly become corroded into more of a drive to make propaganda (the difference being that in propaganda, the "message" is what the media is built around with no soul to it, while in art, the art itself comes first and any message is a posthumous byproduct that largely depends on individual interpretation). This was done through a complex web of social engineering (basically psychological warfare only known to the privy relative few) and cronyism, but the details are best left to voices such as that of James Corbett (whose site I'm not allowed to link, or sometimes even mention, here).

The greatest to this day. Rino Romano is the only voice I hear when I read the main continuity comics etc. he nailed that tone of the comics of its time right off the rip. The cast of characters (with the voice actors from the 90s cartoon and Spider-Man unlimited), the love of the mythos and tommy talarico’s suicide is iconic. I was reading comics as a kid, and wizard magazines thanks to my mom and dad, but when this game came out along with marvel vs capcom, it was and still is everything. I still own my original copy of the game, the booklet , and the sequel game , enter electro along with marvel vs capcom 2. Gems of comic book /super hero games, and games in general. The level of Easter eggs in this game walked so that the arkham games could fly. Also, as a fan of Keanu Reeves, its fun seeing the references to Speed and The Matrix.
Worth mentioning that a lot of the graphical issues, like Black Cat’s missing mask or Spidey’s missing weblines, were fixed for the Dreamcast and PC versions of the game, which came out after the N64 and PS1 versions. Sadly, they are more like reskins of modern Batman games. You can't climb the ceiling! Even climbing walls is meaningless in those games. This one did Spider-Man right!
@@PapuaaniI agree. I loved Insomniac's Spider-man very much and the story was very emotional but this game really surprised me on how interactable literally everything is. Spiderman can climb damn near everything. This game imo has the best wall crawling mechanics in Any Spider-man game.
The Bugle worker with the "darker dialogue" during the symbiote section in the what-if version of the game is repeating lines from the movie Aliens, fitting for an alien symbiote infestation.
24 years later and I'm now learning this game had a what if mode. Can't believe I missed out on so much. This was for sure my most played game on my PS1. Thanks for sharing the knowledge.
You shared my favorite Spider Man game, and this brought back memories not only because I was born in Brooklyn, but fond memories of my PlayStation, Tony Hawk, Activision games, and much of my childhood in the 90s. The level of detail interviewing staff from Neversoft and the comic and movie references were fantastic as well. You put a lot of work and production value into this, and I’m glad there is another need giving this game the shine it deserves. I hope you cover Enter Electro as well. You have more than earned a subscription!
I love how the idea of having the game take place in the prime marvel universe instead of it's own self contained one was carried over into insomniac's Spiderman series.
when my cousin and I were like 6 or 7 and finally finished this game for the first time, we both had nightmares over monster ock for weeks afterwards. genuinely one of the most horrifying things i've ever experienced in a video game.
Great video buddy much appreciated for bringing this to us,,as kid i too have fond memories of this game some of level are frustrating still best experience i had as kid playing this this game will always remain one of fond memory of my childhood
Speaking of symbiotes, "Spider-Man: Friend or Foe" involves symbiotes as your main enemies, as well as a playable roster of other Marvel characters; since it focuses heavily on symbiotes, you should include it in your symbiote saga.
I love peter Parker and Mary Jane being married in this game because damn it I miss Peter and Mary Jane as a married couple so much in the comics it’s not even funny but just sad 😢.
@@alwaysnerdyretros lol indeed one more day is a tough read that its just sad that marvel refuses to undo that mistake and just give us back a married peter parker and mary jane yes but also a bonus having them become parents to their daughter mayday parker spider-girl would've been really awesome and tons of fun at least in my opinion.
It's what made me completely give up on issue-to-issue comics entirely because I realized it was all just a giant soap opera that new writers could just come in and discard at will. Makes it nearly impossible to get emotionally invested.
One thing I like about this game is the sense that it's just another crazy day or two in the Spider life. Everyone knows each other, Venom and Peter have this bond of almost frenemies, and Spidey never gives off a sense of being in over his head.
I remember waking up one morning before I had to go to school and beating the game. I would also love to see a remaster. Loved the video too. I know a lot of hard work went into it.
You are genuinely my favourite retrospective UA-camr on this site, you put so much work into these videos I can really feel it. I've watched all these videos at least three times, I'd love to see a video on Web Of Shadows someday! Keep it up!
Thank you so much!!!! That really means a lot to me 😃 Web of Shadows this year is the plan, although I haven’t figured out exact release estimates yet.
This game was such a big part of my childhood. The characters, voice and music were all perfect. The Mysterio boss fight has the best song in the entire game.
I never played this game before in my entire life, but seeing a few clips on UA-cam when I was a kid, it’s obviously Venom steals the show for me and everyone, he’s like the Deadpool of the game.
I remember involuntarily having to learn how to speedrun this game when I was like 5 because I had no memory card & got tired of starting over and over. Then the PSX disc broke & I had to hurry, getting a new one. Good times. To this day still one of the best Spidey games, if not the best for nostalgia's sake next to Ultimate Spider-Man.
You're not alone in this experience! I remember not having a memory card either at the time, and every time I played I had to start from the first level and hope I got away from Monster Ock by the time dinner was ready.
Ya couldn’t just to explain to your parents how bad you needed a memory card? Lmao I know they came from the Atari and nitendo era but still....computers were a thing and game consoles were getting more advanced Also it’s ridiculous that people were selling consoles without memory cards
2:25 you all know when she saw that flashback video preview of the game where you saw it first… Because we definitely didn’t see it on the Internet… We saw it on the PlayStation Underground magazine monthly demo disc. And if you have a good memory like I do of the 90s and 2000s then you should definitely know black cat also looked a lot better in the demo than she did in the final product. More detailed.
@@alwaysnerdyretros lol indeed it's a classic and as a fan Spider-Man and his world I was so happy to play this game on my ps1 growing up as a kid back in the day because it personally was my first experience with the character and his world.
I'm glad I've discovered your channel and subscribed. You hear this often, but this game is my childhood. Truly. Thank you for this walk down memory lane. I look forward to seeing what other great videos you can cook up!
Damn, I thought I was the only one who saw this Spidey game as a classic. So gald I was wrong. I still vividly remember having a great time with it on my PS1. Great vid Always Nerdy!
The game was a MASSIVE hit both critically and commercially and is always brought up as one of the greatest Spider-Man games ever made. You really thought you were the "only one" ? 🙄
Production values are through the roof! Super cool that you actually get the opportunity to sprinkle in dev interviews making these retrospectives come full circle! Can't wait for the next one.
@Always_Nerdy I think you might have missed the big references with the "What If....?" lines from the hostage during the footage at 51:24. "Game Over Man, Game Over." "Kill me. Please Kill me." Are both references to Alien: The first line spoken by Hudson after the first drop-ship crashes and destroys the APC as well as careening into the Atmospheric Processor. The second line is spoken earlier in the film by the first of the live colonists that they come across who is cocooned into the wall, only seconds before the chestburster bursts out of her.
I'm very impressed by this retrospective. I rented this once on N64 back in the day and never gave it much thought in the years since, but you really underlined & summarized all the really cool & smart inclusions in this one. Great work!
Hey Always Nerdy, since you'll be covering Web of Shadows later on, I thought I could help you take notes on the symbiote enemies, and they have names believe it or not. There are Snatchers (blue ones) that capture civilians and take them to pods, and they even bite into your neck and when countering web strike throw your momentum against you. The Slashers (white ones) will claw you and they even try to lunge at you in mid-air, and their web strike counter involves scratching your face and biting you. The Grapplers are the big black ones with red spots that can grab you with their tendrils, and their web strike counter is grabbing your arm and leg and biting, they even do ground tendril attacks. The Electro-lings go without saying shooting beams and projectiles of electricity, while the Vulture-lings are can swoop towards you even try to attack you with their feet. Finally the Berserkers, the big red ones that can sometimes web strike you, and you have to quickly counter them with the web strike button. (I thought I could help given that I'm playing the game as of now)
Thank you the heads up! I’m not quite to web of shadows yet, but this will be helpful when I get there! I appreciate you taking the time to share this info btw :)
This guy easily has the best and most engaging retrospectives. I can't believe I already watched it all so quickly. Most people I watch I have to cut it up into smaller sessions and can drag on and sometimes end up not even finishing it cause it feels like they are just summarizing the game. But not with yours at all, I can tell how much effort and thought is put into each sentence and the research you do on the games is top notch.
This game was such a huge part of my childhood, at first I played it on my old tv that showed it in black and white while the PAL disc had some cutscenes missing. Pretty much everyone was either playing this or Tekken 3 on PS1. The stage variety, soundtrack, bosses, puzzles, etc. I'll never forget those lizard underground levels, helicopter chases, sewer puzzles and that Monster Ock chase. I'm lucky to have grown up with PS1, those days were pure gold.
I've been binge-ing your videos, they're so good. You summarize the games and their many parts while also talking about outside details that you wouldn't get just playing the games. Above and beyond ❤

Hearing Carnage scream “Die! Die! Dieee!!” In his monster voice fucked me up as a kid lmao
Bad Batch Baker should voice Carnage more often
This is the foundation of modern spiderman games imo
Absolutely!
Still fun to this day. The simplicity doesn't hurt its legacy; it just makes it easier to pick up and enjoy. The humor and color choices are perfect.
You have more than earned a subscription!
amazing video, cant wait for the rest of ur symbiote saga!
Welcome back, Nerdy! I beat the Arkham Knight story 100%, thanks to you!
Well done. I commend you. Congratulations.
Good job man was it worth it?
Congratulations man. That’s games a bloody marathon. Do you feel it was worth it??
I was worth it to beat the shit out of Riddler
Do you realize what you’ve done? You’ve restored my childhood .
Surprised you didn't point out the Aliens references at around 51:16 from the "What If" hostage linereads lol
This channel deserves so so so many more subscribers. Awesome videos!
Monster Ock is one of the scariest villains in any game and nothing can change my mind on that
The dialogue in this game + the infnite references makes it so god dman enjoyable
Always nerdy making another video on one of my favorite childhood games ?? Yes pleeeeeease what a treat
I love how the idea of having the game take place in the prime marvel universe instead of it's own self contained one was carried over into insomniac's Spiderman series.
I rented this game sooooo much. This and the Spider-Man 2002 movie game for PS2 I invested so much time in.
Always look forward to new videos from you, I’m sure this will be a great one!
Thank you! I hope you enjoy it :)
So cool to listen to the lead designer, such an important game on my life this one
when my cousin and I were like 6 or 7 and finally finished this game for the first time, we both had nightmares over monster ock for weeks afterwards. genuinely one of the most horrifying things i've ever experienced in a video game.
I can relate to this! I'm sure many others would too
Great video buddy much appreciated for bringing this to us,,as kid i too have fond memories of this game some of level are frustrating still best experience i had as kid playing this this game will always remain one of fond memory of my childhood
Thank you for watching! I agree, this game was a highlight of my childhood too. I hope they remaster it one day
@@alwaysnerdyretros 👍👍
Speaking of symbiotes, "Spider-Man: Friend or Foe" involves symbiotes as your main enemies, as well as a playable roster of other Marvel characters; since it focuses heavily on symbiotes, you should include it in your symbiote saga.
I had no idea what I wanted to do for the next 1:35 until this was in my recommended.
I love peter Parker and Mary Jane being married in this game because damn it I miss Peter and Mary Jane as a married couple so much in the comics it’s not even funny but just sad 😢.
Same :/ One More Day was a tough read lol
@@alwaysnerdyretros lol indeed one more day is a tough read that its just sad that marvel refuses to undo that mistake and just give us back a married peter parker and mary jane yes but also a bonus having them become parents to their daughter mayday parker spider-girl would've been really awesome and tons of fun at least in my opinion.
It's what made me completely give up on issue-to-issue comics entirely because I realized it was all just a giant soap opera that new writers could just come in and discard at will. Makes it nearly impossible to get emotionally invested.
@@HobGungan i can agree with that
I agree screw that comic I can believe that happened
One thing I like about this game is the sense that it's just another crazy day or two in the Spider life. Everyone knows each other, Venom and Peter have this bond of almost frenemies, and Spidey never gives off a sense of being in over his head.
I'm still not over the cancellation of the PS2 Daredevil game.
Me either. It looked so promising! I keep hoping someone will make a modern Daredevil game
@@alwaysnerdyretros Web of Shadows is a Underrated game.
This game is also notable for being one of the only games Tommy Tallerico says he worked on which he actually did.
Lmao I know they came from the Atari and nitendo era but still....computers were a thing and game consoles were getting more advanced
Also it’s ridiculous that people were selling consoles without memory cards
Maybe this is how speed run was born.
I cannot openly express how much I’ve waited for this review. I hope you are having a great day
Sorry I ended up delaying it so long, but I appreciate your patience! I hope you’re having a great day as well :)
Thank you.
I forgot how GOOD that remixed Spider-Man theme was for the main menu.
I loved the ps1 Spider-Man game back in the day it’s personally one of my all time favorite Spider-Man games growing up at least in my opinion.
It's definitely a classic and still has all that comic book charm today. I think it'll forever be that way
@@alwaysnerdyretros lol indeed it's a classic and as a fan Spider-Man and his world I was so happy to play this game on my ps1 growing up as a kid back in the day because it personally was my first experience with the character and his world.
I remember playing this probably 10x over and i didnt know half of this!!!! Amazing!
I'm glad I've discovered your channel and subscribed. You hear this often, but this game is my childhood. Truly. I remember it being one of the first titles I played when I first got my PS1 mini (or whatever it's called). Spider-Man is among my top five Marvels, and top ten capes overall.
Thank you! I agree, it’s great to see how many people still hold this game in high regard
The game was a MASSIVE hit both critically and commercially and is always brought up as one of the greatest Spider-Man games ever made. You really thought you were the "only one" ? 🙄
Keep up the good work man, you're amazing
Thank you 😃 will do!
"Game Over Man, Game Over."
"Kill me. Please Kill me."
Are both references to Alien: The first line spoken by Hudson after the first drop-ship crashes and destroys the APC as well as careening into the Atmospheric Processor.
The second line is spoken earlier in the film by the first of the live colonists that they come across who is cocooned into the wall, only seconds before the chestburster bursts out of her.
Thank you for pointing that out! I definitely overlooked that
32:56 you should open all of your spider man videos that contain venom with this clip
1:08:29 I can’t believe I’m just now learning that’s a real photo. 12 year old me would’ve been very interested in that information.
I'm very impressed by this retrospective. I rented this once on N64 back in the day and never gave it much thought in the years since, but you really underlined & summarized all the really cool & smart inclusions in this one. Great work!
Thank you!!!
I remember playing this game back in the day. Instant classic game.
I'm already at full health
I absolutely adored this game back in the day.
51:18 - Those are quotes from Alien movies. ;)
I've been binge-ing your videos, they're so good. You summarize the games and their many parts while also talking about outside details that you wouldn't get just playing the games. Above and beyond ❤
Thank you so much!!! It’s exciting to hear you’ve been enjoying the channel and I appreciate you commenting to tell me. More videos are on the way too :)
Believe if you want, but for real. Today I decided to watch a Playthrough of Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro, when I was about to watch it, your video came up on my feed, so perfect timing! Also, that was a badass intro, sir. 👊🏻
my favorite ps1 game of all time thanks for covering this
Thank you for checking it out!
