  • Let’s go to London’s Chinatown for some delicious Dim Sum!
Dim Sum are served in small portions (usually 3 or 4 pieces each), which allows for a variety of tastes and textures to be enjoyed in one seating - be it steamed, fried or baked.
We’re heading to one of our favourite restaurants to enjoy Dim Sum: Joy King Lau in London’s Chinatown.
Here’s the list of Dum Sum we’ve ordered:
    Cheung Fun (Rice Noodle Roll)
Fu Pei Guen (Stuffed Tofu Skin)
    Siu Mai (Pork Dumpling)
    Wu Gok (Yam Croquette)
    Fung Zao (Chicken Feet)
    Har Gao (Shrimp Dumpling)
    Xiao Long Bao (Soup Dumpling)
Char Siu Bao (Roast Pork Bun)
    Dan Tat (Egg Tart)
    00:17 - Chinatown
02:58 - Dim Sum at Joy King Lau

All the reasons why I had a very bad experience, why I would never go there and caution anybody considering going there
      1. Very rude response from all the staff expect for one new recruit, the new recruit was very humble, but even if he came to serve us, he was overpowered by the other staff whom I am assuming that they work there, because after I had a bad experience at this place, I read many reviews and everybody said that the customer experience is bad
      2. There is this rule with dumpling which I found to be very weird, in the very first go you have to order as many dumpling dishes as you want, if you taste something and like it, you cannot order more after that. (what is the point in running a place where a customer likes something you make but you do not serve it?)
      3. Because of point number 2 we ordered 6 different dumpling dishes, of which 2 of them were never served to us because they forgot. We were waiting for the 2 dishes thinking it is in the making, but throughout our wait time, we were treated as if they were letting us sit on the table like they were giving us shelter for charity, while the 2 rude staff kept asking us why we were not eating anything, we said that we were waiting for those dishes. Yet it never arrived.
4.Because we thought that the kitchen was very busy and it might take time, we went ahead and ordered a main course. The main course arrived but the 2 dumpling dishes did not arrive. We ordered another main course, and the dumplings came along with the main course. All this while we were being treated like we were wasting their time, but it was them who were wasting our time.
      5. When we told them that the 2 dumpling dishes arrived late, the rude staff literally asked "Do you want it or not?". We were being treated like we made mistake in ordering the dishes, while it was actually them who wasted our time and treated like they were doing us charity.
      6. Topping all of this, there was the gratuity bill along with the bill. Gratuity for being treated like I was receiving charity food from them.
Neither is the taste of the food, nor the portion size was worth enduring the rude treatment from the staff. Ended up walking out of the place feeling miserable.

I've been to all Dim Sum restaurants even though I have yet travel to London Chinatown. When you need to add more hot water into your teapot, you need to open the lid half way and place supporting by the edge of the handle not flip the lid over upside down.

Used to go to Joy King Lau a lot, knew the owners and the food was always top. However last few years felt they've gone downhill a bit. Now mostly frequent Golden Phoenix on the main street.

Hey! Our favourites in London are JKL, Golden Dragon and of course Four Seasons for their roasted duck. There used to be a restaurant that had dim sum on trolleys as well (I believe it was called New World or something like that), but sadly they closed a few years ago and we do miss this one. We'll give the Golden Phoenix a try, thanks for the tip! 😄

@@farfromhomeadventures Originally, our always go to even before JKL was Gerrards Corner. For the first few years that we were in London, that was staple along with Mandarin Kitchen in Bayswater. Four Seasons of course for the duck and roast meats! New World closed a year or so ago, tbh it was always more just a novelty as we always felt the service was severely lacking and we actually only found Golden Phoenix because New World wouldn't even let us wait. Literally ushered out.

@@LoosSerine the "secret" is to never really expect great service when going to any Chinese restaurant... but it's quite shocking you were shown the door, so sorry to hear that!
