- Touhou Project has a lot of fanworks, and when it comes to the race of influence, there can only be one first place: a fanwork so unhinged, so bad-yet-good, so "totally filled with a wacky community" that it has become taboo/infamous within the internet at large. How do you even accomplish that?? Ask the people who made Cookie☆ (and the Inmu community)!
This was a long time coming -- I always wanted to cover this yet had no idea how. A certain special someone from Touhoufest influenced my choice to make it, yet could never figure out the best way to put it... I guess that's what Cookie does to you, hmm?! It's like a little talisman they put on your head as punishment -- watch Cookie while paying full attention.
If you want me to do more Cookie (since there's a lot to it), I am open to doing it! You just gotta recommend me something, or idk. Anyway Cookie fans don't do any "funky" things to me xd

I think it might be worthwhile to make a video about Cookie☆ parodies and the culture that center around NYN aneki's contributions to the voice drama. It's basically become a canon of its own. Think of that derpy little Nazrin drawing that changed people's brain chemistry. Dig a little deeper though, and you'll find out about how far some fans were willing to go to get more voice clips/content for their videos.

I remember seeing the original Marisa & Alice cookie kiss on UA-cam a few months ago. To me, it looked just like any other armature touhou fanwork and I thought it was cute. Didn't think there would be so much controversy behind it.

It's pretty easy to understand actually, just like Daiyousei, Koakuma serves the role of Patchouli's assistant in most fanworks, just like how Daiyousei is often portrayed as being Cirno's friend.
The relation between those characters is what makes their "personality".
In most fanworks, Koakuma is shown to be a more talkative and less serious in contrast to Patchouli.
Similar to how Daiyousei is portrayed as being shy and worrysome in contrast to Cirno's defiant personality.
Just compare these two to Lily White, who has way more appearances, but lacks a compatible stage coleague.
Relation matters.

My only interaction with the Cookie ☆ sub culture was the time I commented on post with a picture of Nazrin, only to be told and ranted at that it was not infact Nazrin but instead this other characters who's name I forget and to be told a lengthy explanation of why the designs are different, and when I asked okay but what is different about the character, only to be told that a certain voice actor voices them so that's why they are named after them which somehow makes them a completely different character, and for some reason this all makes perfect and reasonable sense to this unhinged individual.
What i'm saying is if it looks like a Nazrin, talks like a Nazrin, and steals cheese like a Nazrin, it's a freaking Nazrin!

Hey Cookie☆ fan here (I am mentally sane and well I promise) but essentially the multiple incarnation of characters are all because of the different voice dramas that falls under the Cookie☆ category of videos. Essentially, characters in this subculture are referred to by their VA’s name (For example the Marisa in the OG Cookie☆ video is called UDK and the Reimu here would be caused RU (the shortening of names is part of the Inmu culture and how they refer to their characters)) and are treated as being separate from their Touhou counterparts due to how they not only stray far away from Touhou canon, but are essentially the voice actresses themselves as bei the characters. The VAs got doxxed and a lot of shit was figured out about them such as physical appearances and academic ventures. Because of the info gained from doxxing, they associate that with their Cookie☆ counterpart to further make fun of the project (mainly stuff like making RU fat since she’s chubby irl or giving UDK glasses and making fun of how she made terrible art pieces, etc.) This goes on for future voice drama projects where similar Touhou characters would be used but with different VAs and so new info to be doxxed, and thus entirely new characters. This is seen prominently with Marisa who have roughly 21 different VAs. Hell one of the voice drama made fun of this where the gimmick was between every scene there would be a new Marisa/Marisa VA and was pointed towards and made fun of.
Uh yea I did a really sloppy job at explaining this and what I said was scattered all over the place so please if you have any questions or need further clarifications I’d love to explain more. It is my hyperfixation after all lmao

Inmu community was trolling not only Cookie☆ but also various anime and japanese subcultures by linking their meme.
For example, the anime "A-Channel" fell prey to inmu simply because the title of episode 6 was "A Midsummer Night's..."

Fantastic video! I'm from the Cookie☆Community in Japan, and I must say there's no other video out there that explains that 'terrible voice drama' in such detail! However, there are many wonderful MADs and creations derived from Cookie☆. One I particularly recommend is the voice drama '自己矛盾☆.' It's more enjoyable if you're familiar with Cookie☆ and Inmu culture, but I think you would have no problem appreciating it.
I'm not fluent in English, so my words might not come across clearly.

I have three things to ask:
1: What are some other parts of Cookie⭐ history that I should look into? I want to look at Taisa⭐ // Kusso⭐ // Self-Contradiction soon, but I am not sure what to do beyond that.
2: What are some other infamous moments in the history of NicoNico/JP UA-cam history? In the western world, think of UA-cam cancellations (edp445, colleen balingeer, LTT, etc.). In Japan, think lf YUZUHA ch. from the Yukkuri community.
3: What are some stories from the JP Touhou community that I should talk about? The community is bigger in Japan (and probably China too), so I believe there's something worth talking about.

1. If you want understand about cookie☆ and Inmu culture, You may be more confused than watching the original Cookie☆ but you should watch more of the MAD posted on NicoNico.
Many video creaters use fan-made blue back material to create videos. And they have never properly watched the original Cookie☆
The thing I like the most about Cookie is that it has permutated to a point where it's a blank canvas for creators. NND has dedicated tags for feel-good cookie, horror cookie, educational cookie, battle cookie and so much more. You'll find the most unique fanart here, as well. It really is a petri dish of meme culture.
the most ironic thing for me is how inofensive the whole work is, like i've seen some really REALLY shitty Touhou fanmade products...mostly western comics that were more of an excuse from the autohrs to show their shitty oc's, but this is surprisingly innocent, yes it's extremely bizarre and jarring but it's harmless nonetheless, so the fact that it gained life of it's own and became its own subculture blows my mind (there's a special tag for cookie and a lot of numbers)

there were lots of people involved in the making of the original voice drama so the final product being as bad as it was probably threw people off and it was the intervention of the inmu fandom that set things into motion (VA's doxxed, Hazuna Rio getting exposed...)

In Nico Nico Douga there is a weekly ranking called "Weekly NicoNico Ranking". I had watched it since the end of 2010 and had noticed several cookie MAD videos in the first 30 places. Just imagine that even with the passing of the years, there have still been MAD videos about cookies and especially with Gachimuchi (Even Gachimuchi has a category on nico nico douga and a HUGE number of videos related to Cookie appear there)

I am a Japanese cookie fanboy. It is so much fun to share this chaotic culture with people from other countries. For expression and culture to flourish, there needs to be "some" amount of chaos. The hard part is how much "some" actually is. I think a culture like cookies is a cutting-edge activity that explores that boundary.

This community is seriously one of the wildest experiences you can ever find online. stories of lust, betrayal, personal demons, mental health, heart warming conclusions, beautiful works of arts, genuinely hilarious projects. Cookie is a true melting pot of internet shitposters. It truly is a sandbox anyone can play around in. It has it's demons. Dark moments, and good old cringe. But once you get past that. You're greeted with one of the hardest working, most passionate, interconnected yet decentralized communities online. It really is worth overcoming the language barrier for. The rabbit hole never ends with stories and videos to uncover.

I think it's also interesting to note that there were some Japanese cookie clicker-like games based around the theme of Cookie☆. They're.... not good, and grindy as hell, and nowadays the only way to play them is through Flash Point as far as I know

それにより淫夢動画は20年以上もの間一大コンテンツとしての地位を保ち続けているのである。
そして、淫夢動画はその性質上、根本的に反-商業的である。元々ポルノビデオであるということ、男優達の尊厳を無視した個人情報の捜索、無遠慮に飛び交う誹謗中傷。これらの要素により淫夢コミュニティには金銭要素の介入が許されないものとなっている。従ってクリエイター達は義務感ではなく、自由に、より面白いものを作ろうとする。

The backlash as a result brought a lot more attention within the Nico Nico Douga community to rally against "UNEI", or the administration staff at dwango. As you mentioned the "anti-commercial" part of these videos, does seem to be play a major role in why niconico is flooded with this content for over 13+ years compared to other phenomenon like Wrestling Series, KYM, and others I cannot name off the top of my head.

i always think that the last cookie☆ voice drama (self-contradiction☆) is somewhat good-ish, at the very least there's a message about how people thrive on fanworks and not on original works, and surprisingly decent animation, but overall that voice drama is mid content anyway. 5.5/10 i'd say.

If anything, Touhou cookie is a very good example of a fanbase when it lacks grounds rules. Touhou project had a lot of fem-to-fem shipping due to it's lack of male characters and all the characters having a somewhat friendly relationship with the others even though they cause problems.
However, the shipping is usually just a friendship, sibling, or mother-daughter type and most fans had an unsaid mutual agreement that anything going beyond that should stay in the dark. It also didn't help that many characters in Touhou don't exactly have a proper backstory or consistent characterization which make most attempts to create proper rules, futile. ZUN, the creator of Touhou project also didn't create such rules as he seemed to like the idea of people having "free reign" of his characters.
Due to all these rules(or rather the lack of), when Touhou Cookie came along, they were technically free to do as they pleased and unfortunately disregard the unsaid mutual agreement mentioned above. This resulted in one of the very dark parts of the Touhou fandom being dragged into the light as it showed how crazy and hardcore some of the fanon could be. Not even ZUN knew or heard about this due to his idea of free reign for the fans until someone brought it up in an interview.
Nowadays, this type of material and shipping is almost "normal" in the eyes of many because of the numerous pride movements and promotions to support these movements. It's also because of this, many Touhou comic or writing fan works are yuri shipping.

I think a second part going a little deeper into this topic and explaining things like naming conventions, how Meguru voice actresses voice was used to make a vocaloid of sorts using UTAU(and mentioning the legendary trio of parodies by Nisu), the infamous Nyon scene, some of the drama around her streaming and where most of her voice clips come from, mentioning the korean cookie etc. These are very interesting topics and getting some coverage of them in a single concise english video would be great!
