I was far too old to be scared by this when I saw it, but my little brother wasn't. He was terrified of these guys. So naturally being the loving big brother that I was I would stick a feather duster around the corner to his room and say "hey! anyone got a spare head in here?" in my best fireys voice. He'd probably still scream if I did it today.
Now that’s a childhood memory right there😂
I wish I had had siblings. This is hilarious
The feather duster!
I was terrified when they took their eyes !
As an older sister, I was terrified by this movie I don’t remember how old I was but I think I was about 6.
The puppets look so good I don't care how obvious the green screen is.
Actually, it was black velvet. "But that's close enough." ~ Worm
@@derekllewellyn6663 Trying to decode what you're saying and I'm lost in the translation. Sorry. The comment is in regard to green screen techniques. For this scene in the movie, Jim Henson had the puppeteers dressed in black velvet to hide them. Watch the behind the scenes documentary, "Into The Labyrinth". Very cool interesting stuff!

That offset jawline and stare into the camera as he moves away at 1:56 is fucking awesome. These puppeteers really knew how to give the puppets personalities.

Lol right??
Jim Henson's was a master before his own time
The part where the leader throws his eyeballs in the air and swallows them was a particularly difficult scene to film. The lead puppeteer Kevin Clash told Jim Henson it wouldn't work. Jim told him to keep doing that shot. According to Kevin, they finally did it at the 29th take.
he doesn't "swallow" the eyes,it just sounds like that
@@mineonlyedwardcullen Are you claiming to know the anatomical workings of a fictional creature?
@@Steppenwolf27 No, but ask Brian Froud and Terry Jones (RIP). They're the inspiration for all the creatures and story.
Thats probably just very cool story. Watch closer - there are two cuts: one cut with the eyes thrown somewhere out of the frame and another cut, close-up with eyes falling out of the frame right into the mouth. 99.99% probability that cuts filmed separately.
Actually very cheap VFX trick dated as far as silent movie era, but still worked. Very usable to film car accidents with no budget and no stuntmen)
Just the part when the fireye looks at the screen and says “And we don’t charge not’in”….and he just looks at the screen going past with his jaw unhinged 😂😂😂 it still cracks me up as a 30+ adult
"You ever look at someone and wonder what is going on inside of their head?"
Me:
“Just strut your nasty stuff.
Wiggle in the middle, yeah.
Get the town talkin’, fire gang.” This line cracked us up as kids! Still my favorite scene to sing along to.
Haha
Better on the soundtrack version when the bass Fiery sings it 😀
It’s pretty catchy😂
Something that people don't talk about are the Fireys ears, its so funny how they flop around when they dance 😂
My girlfriend, before we got together, showed me this movie. It was way different than what I was expecting, but this grew into a core memory between us. This is our fav scene. For my birthday, she made from scratch a Fiery, she’s really talented with art and creating things. She’s awesome and I’ll always thank her for introducing me to this masterpiece. I think the Fire Gang would trick people into dropping their guard by acting silly and fun, but then they tear you to pieces, which they burn. Then you become one of them, or even just spare pieces for them.
I'll admit when I was a young child watching this scene, it honestly scared me. These freaks are plucking their own eyeballs and eating them! In spite of everything else in the film, I found this part to be the most traumatic.
Great movie though!
Same! now i'm perfectly fine with them, but ten-ish years ago? NOPE
and i'm talking about both the fireys and the skeksis (dad actually had to turn off the Dark Crystal when we watched it when i was little, recently got to watch part of it and definitely liked it a lot better (labyrinth is still my favorite of the movies, Fraggle Rock is my favorite of those tv shows with the Jim Henson puppets))

At 0:33 as a kid I always thought he said, "I can throw in my shit hand!" We laughed our assess off.
3:05 also sounds like he says that’s right n
Still to this day can't believe this movie hasn't been made into award winning Broadway musical. It would be epic.
Agreed!
I love everything about this. The fireys have such amazing perfect design. I love them so much. This song is such a jam. This entire scene is perfect
Idk how people can see this as the worst song because honestly this song slaps 😂 I still think about this anytime I have a bonfire at my parents
FOR REALL. All the songs in this film were the best
It may be the worst of all them from this movie, but it’s still completely wonderful and I love it.
As a kid it scared me,so it was the worst song
anytime someone says this song is the worst from the movie i just say, “HEY, WHERE YOU GOIN’ WITH A HEAD LIKE THAT?”
I remember going to a screening of the movie in 2016. I enjoyed listening to the audiences reactions around me as if this was a new movie and they had never seen it before (some may have not or most likely don't remember every detail from it). I remember people around me going"Ewwww" when the leader pulled out his eyeballs.
I remember when we first got HBO in ‘87, I’ve watched this a thousand times. The older I got the scarier these dudes became. They have nothing to lose.

This was the song that led me to this movie - it was in 2003 or so, and the lyrics to this song were on a Red Dwarf site (at least one of the actors for that show voiced a "Firey" in this movie.) so I checked out the song and loved it, and then checked out the movie and loved it.
This has been my favorite moment of this excellent movie ever since.

Fun fact: The lead singer is Kevin Clash, best known as the puppeteer and voice of Elmo. He was offered to work on The Dark Crystal, but that would mean sacrificing two shows he was working on, Captain Kangaroo and The Great Space Coaster. He chose to stick to those 2 shows. After Captain Kangaroo and Great Space Coaster were cancelled, he was asked to come to London to do this movie.

Even as a kid I was just having too much fun with the singing and dancing to be scared by these guys. But now, 1:55 and the way he stares daggers into the camera and 3:10 where he chased her and said "Now we get to take your head off! HA HA HA!" are both unnerving.

To think Danny-John Jules (Cat) and Charles Augins (Queeg) from Red Dwarf played two of their voices :D
Absolutely true, you get that vibe anyway! There's definitely a bit of Cat in there and definitely the bossiness of Queeg!
That was how I was introduced to this movie - there was a Red Dwarf site that focused on the music in the show, but there were sections for what songs the actors did outside Red Dwarf, so this was included.
