Napoleon Defiance and Western Railroad! Worst Tracks in America!

- On our way to Deshler on 6/25/21, we stopped in Defiance to get some action from the ND&W railroad - otherwise known as ‘Napoleon Defiance & Western.’ We see them running on one of the worst track segments in America. Today, they used the Pioneer Railroad engine 3054 (GP20u) or as its reporting marks say “PREX 3054.” At their yard in Defiance, you can see a lot of really old PREX power such as the Santa Fe bluebonnet 3001, the Elkhart and Western 2045, and the Gettysburg 105 high hood. Just listen throughout the video for the stuff this crew says all for me recording them! Haha!
The railroad was purchased by Pioneer Railcorp on December 28, 2012, which announced the intention to repair and extend the tracks as they had not been repaired since 1970!!

I wish that the railfan community would educate themselves as to the progress being made by the ND&W in their track rehabilitation project. We have too much in the the way of disinformation being spewed out by some of the less responsible members of the community.

Still a vast improvement from the Maumee and Western days. I love that line though. Really easy to chase.

They might have spaghetti track...but their loco is SO pretty. Kinda gives you hope for the future.
Except for the employee entrance in the middle of a switch!? (3:50) looks like a disaster lookin' for a place to happen for someone coming out....watching for the train and missing that tall last step.
A good video though...shows that the railroad has customers which equates to money to keep the lights on. 😊Thanks.
Forced perspective from the zoom on a camera can make any track "look bad" and while it used to not be necessary to make the tracks of the Maumee & Western look bad, too often I see it being used to make it look like Progress Rails hasn't made some very real headway into improving the tracks of this old line that had maintenance deferred from clear back when the N&W took it over from the Wabash.
