  • On a complete whim, I decided to take a short drive to Woodburn, IN and begin searching to see if the Napoleon Defiance & Western was working today. After no sign of them in Woodburn and an empty yard, I went east. After seeing track workers between Cecil, OH and Defiance, OH I thought my luck might have been out. But as I still had some luck, as PREX 2045 was just getting underway from the east end of the yard in Defiance. At the blistering speeds the ND&W operates at, I only chased them from Defiance to Jewell, OH (where the photos were taken from) before running out of time for the day.
Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoy!

If anyone thinks the line is bad, you should have seen it before all the improvements over the last 10 years!

Nice job on being able to catch the ND&W. I enjoy that shortline.

Thanks! It was a stroke of luck. Just happened to go out on a day off work and find them in Defiance. And they're one of the best shortlines to see imo.

The track leading up to the grade crossing around 4:10 could use some tamping work.

Sure could but that's part of the ND&W charm lol

It could probably use an undercutter as well but then there wouldn't be a railroad left.

Why are the trains still crawling along? Didn’t the track get refurbished?
Edit: I now realize that this was taken about three months before it was fixed

The line has been getting refurbished for quite some time now, but it's still a long ways from being a faster line.

Either of those tracks need some repairs, or need to be taken down. You would have to go 2mph just to keep the train from derailing.

You should have seen it years ago. This is a huge improvement for them. They don't really derail anymore like they used to.

I know after 50 years of Bad maintenance they are finally improving the line. I meant before it was better maintained.

So what improvements are there? No recent videos anywhere showing the improved track structure other than the yard at Napoleon. Guess all the bad track is all anyone wanted to see on UA-cam. I guess if this video was made after the improvements then it shows all that work did nothing more than raise the track speed from 2 to 2.5 mph, not 25. Either that or the crews are so shell shocked from all the derailments and leaning engines that they're like a frightened dog afraid of going around an abusive owner.
