A Designer's Quaint Country Backyard On A Budget

See how designer Carly Nemtean of Carriage Lane Design Build transformed her back garden into a casual outdoor retreat. She took inspiration from her century home's farmhouse aesthetic to create a laid-back look for the backyard. The best part? She did it all on tight budget.
Wanting to frame the property with a dark wood fence, Carly and her husband chose an ancient Japanese wood preserving technique called Shou Sugi Ban, which involved charring the wood and sealing it.

I don't like firepits. If you're out in the country and the smoke can't reach your neighbor's windows, fine. I turned mine into a planted area with birdbath and
am very happy with it. Now, I just have to go inside and close my windows when my neighbors burn yard waste. (illegal in this city, county.)

I don't know where this house is located, but here in the Midwest those cushions and rug would be so impractical. A couple of rain storms and they would be toast. Really, I felt this yard was either staged for the filming or in a very dry climate.

Outdoor rugs are usually made of woven plastic (quick to dry!) and cushions are always stored indoors/shed when not in use.
