- Paris Apartment Tour| KJ and Tony Move to France | We just moved from the US to France on November 7th and there are a few things to get used to, especially with this being our first week. #1 is our small apartment (and small everything for that matter), which we love but is not what we're used to back in the US. Today we're sharing a tour of our apartment in Paris where we'll be living until December 7th, when we move on to Versailles. We hope you enjoy our journey!

The white bars on the bathroom wall are a radiator heated towel rack. There should be a gauge at the bottom that looks like a wheel to adjust the heat. Hang the bath towel on there before you shower and it will be warm when you get out. It can also be used to dry hand washables (underwear, socks) faster. Once you get used to it, you will never want to be without one!

@@kjandtonylovefrance You really don't know heated towel rails in the US ? That's quite surprising. Even in England you have this feature in mostly all homes.
@@enlilw-l2 My British friends in Palm Springs CA put heated towel rails in their bathrooms despite it being in the desert, said there’s nothing beats a warm, fluffy towel.

A move to Paris has been on my dream list for decades. At the age of 16, I made a promise to go there once every decade for a vacation. I have kept the promise ever since that time. Now, I'm just months away from age 65 and did not think I could move across the ocean at this age. However, your video is encouraging me once again. Thank you for showing us that life is not over in our sixties. 💜💜
It's definitely not easy, especially if you've lived in the same area and not used to moving around. Tony spent the majority of his career traveling and has moved much more often than I ever have, so it's much harder for me than it is for him.
I lived in a 4th floor walk up for 16 years( I was 27 when I moved in). I think it's wonderful that you made this move ...I don't think you will ever regret taking this chance. I hope you enjoy every day and thrive. You are living many people's dream.....eat, drink and enjoy living. Best wishes .
We have not regretted it for one second. If anything, every moment we are here reinforces that we made the right decision. We are loving it!
I lived on the 3 floor walk up, in Brooklyn 2 babies, groceries almost every day, no cabinets to store it, took me 3 trips up, come down, pick up another child, go down pick up the groceries, go down again to pull in the baby carriage…big coach carriages….but it kept me thin

Good to see an older couple living their bucket list while healthy enough to enjoy it. Learning to cook in a small kitchen was surprisingly easy when I adapted to 'one-pot meals' ... and well worth the health benefits. Looking forward to future vids. Vive La France!

France, Paris was the dream of my life. I grew up on the novels of Maupassant, Zola ...
But I was able to visit Paris only as an adult at 57. And I fell in love even more than if I had arrived in my youth, it seems to me.
I was in Paris 8 times, in all 4 seasons gorgeous, ok, maybe summer little uncomfortable
New Year 2020 I met alone but in Paris and again In March 2020, when the Pandemic began and the whole world did not know what would happen, I flew to Paris, I decided that if something bad happens, then at least I will die in the country of my dreams. I realized for myself that this is the only country where I don't mind to die alone. My first Hotel and all the others were in the Latin Quarter. There are two Hotels near where you now live - Europe Saint Severin on the corner of Blvd Saint-Michel , and Hotel Cluny Square on the corner of Blvd Saint Michel /Saint-Germain my favorites, with nice top floor balcony and view of a tip Eifel tower lights at night .
There is a small restaurant Chez KELLY, on your right side by the door entrance. Asian young woman Kelly, owner works there, the kindest person, I dined there almost every day . Give her my regards "Jasmine from Los Angeles" , I think she will be pleased.
It will be very busy and noisy until late at nights during tourists season! Happy place!
Our life in America is so boring i monotonous, work-home-work, and only here , like magic in order to relieve fatigue just enough take a walk along the Seine - how all fatigue passes. Therapy without drugs.

To be fair, there are many places in America that offer similar advantages. I can walk to the ocean! But Paris is quite lovely as are many European cities.
@@TubeTorte in my case in order to get to the ocean, after work or even on the weekends to receive "treatment" not convenient - 25 miles away, traffic , plus cant do it on the daily basis , when in Paris the Seine is all along the city with most famous monuments and landmarks.

You will get used to the stairs after a bit of conditioning. I walk 54 stairs up several times a day. ❤ If you are filming with your phone, you can change the frame to .5 and it will fit more into the frame. It’s good for wide scenes and apt tours and such 😀

I never thought about going to France until I went with a class for culinary school. I loved it so much I've been 3 times. Twice just renting a car and driving all around France and another time just in Paris. I can't wait to see where you end up. Paris is my favorite place on earth but there are so many great places to live in France. Good luck in your travels and thanks for sharing.

I lived in london and.madrid when i was young and single and later in Greece when i was married. If i was able now i would move back to Europe in a heartbeat. Good for you.

I admire you so much for moving to Paris. You are obviously very adaptable, adventurous, and congenial. I have been to Paris only twice, the last time in 2000 when I WON the trip (it's a great story; short version: I was working at a small law firm, and a guy I didn't know called because he'd heard my name on the radio station that was giving away the trips. Nobody had my work number; he'd looked up my last name in the phone book, it connected to my mother, and she gave him the number). I've studied French from age 9 through freshman year of college. Nothing compares with Paris. Bonne chance!
Thank you. I believe you may be right in that nothing compares to Paris. We are going to find out. We move on to Versailles in about a week and then to Nice. We are spending a year finding out where we want to settle fulltime. We are already thinking nothing will compare to Paris!

It's very French, and adorable, but I can't imagine living there for much more than a week on vacation, but if you love it that's all that matters.
We are here a month, Beth, and the only way I am enjoying it is knowing that it's temporary. I'm loving it while we are here, but could not stay here full-time.
Many of us have small apartments. Been here in the big city for 17 years. Thank you for your honesty and courage. Acceptance is steadfast.

I agree with with E.machocolat. I lived for a while in a family apartment in Paris, and had to lug the baby, toddler, etc on 6 flights of stairs. You get used to it pretty quickly, and as he / she has said, it very quickly teaches us to do everything needed before heading home!
I think it's a massive adjustment for most Americans as they discover how much smaller Europe in general, houses and and shops, etc are, and then, if staying any length of time, I think will begin to realise that big is not necessarily 'best'.
I'm still making the adjustment to small town France as opposed to small town life in the UK - after six years, it can still be really frustrating, but then, so is life anywhere, if we let it get to us, I guess.
It's interesting to see the actual move and adjustment from your perspective. In haven't seen your earlier videos, only the one before this, but if you are planning to stay in France 'for life', do choose to get your French up to speed as quickly as you can - sign up for those classes straight away.
Then choose to live among the French, and learn the way of life, rather than gravitate towards the ex-US groups. You'll find life in general is a lot richer, and you'll be accepted much faster if you do. I consequence, you'll end up being a lot happier.
Also, maybe you know already, there are certain 'musts'' here to avoid offense. Check out Diane’s Oui in France videos - they are really helpful, so begin at the earliest, and work through.

Yes, I agree with everything you've said and I am working on my French. I'm taking an excellent French class through Great Courses taught by Ann Williams. She is phenomenal and I am learning a lot. The difficulty is that I have to be really diligent about staying on track with the lessons.

I started watching her channel back when we were in the States and first started to plan our move. I LOVE her channel... and her! She is so relatable. I aspire to one day be able to speak French as eloquently as she does!! Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts and suggestions!! It's greatly appreciated. Now if only I could get my husband to practice his French too... lol... that's a bit of a harder task, as he is quite happy with the minimal phrases he needs to get by (at least for now). Il y a tant à découvrir en France. J'ai travaillé à Paris, Lyon etc personnellement je préfère la province, la mentalité des gens est différente de celle de Paris.

I use to live in Mosow in a 4 room flat with a spacious kitchen, large balcony where we took our toy poodle for wee-wee on the newspaper in winter when it was to cold outside or we were lazy to get out in the rain. I also had a lot of flower pots there. At some point I kept a cockrell on the same balcony. I thought at the time that we lived not a very sophisticated life and I wanted to see more of different places. I also thought that life in Paris or London would be something absolutely outstanding from my ordinary days when living in Moscow, or when spending holidays in the country at the summer cottage by the river. Now after I lived and travelled to many different places I could rsay that I lived in a beautiful city with a lot culture and our flat was far from miserable and small. I live in Northern Ireland now. I love people around and I love the place, nature and everything around me, but most of all I love my home. I realised that it does really matter where you live. What matters it is how you live.

I knew that there was a lack of elevators but the fact that the stairs are curved puts another spin on it! I like Tony's facial hair style. He is looking younger/healthier.

The view from the living room is truly beautiful! Like a scene from a romantic movie! I sure hope someday my husband agrees to move OUT of the US. Adorable! Thanks for sharing. Love the Latin Quartet. Luggage is great for extra storage and lightweight backpack to get food upstairs and home. The item in the bathroom is a towel warmer. Great for the end of the day if the towel is not quite dry.

Hi Gill! Yes, thank you. We are really getting used to it and starting to truly love it. Tony was teasing me yesterday. He was in the water closet (Tony says thats what Brits call the bathroom) and he yells out to me"Well, I shaved it all off!" I nearly had a heart attack because I love it so much (the beard) JK of course 😆 But the scarf and hat bring it all together. Although, most people take us for Brits first, interestingly. @@kjandtonylovefrance Hey, we don't call the 'bathroom' the water closet. We call the it the toilet! Or 'the loo'. The bathroom's the place where the bath / washbasin / shower / toilet are. We'll ask, "Please, may I use the toilet?' if that's what we need.

I did the opposite. I grew up in Paris 17th district and moved to the US 30 years ago. You place is very charming and I love the quartier latin. Enjoy your new place in Paris.

I spent 2 weeks in France (on a tour) in September. I loved every minute. My favorite cities were Lyon and Bordeaux. Nice was nice (pardon the pun!) as well. But it is a coastal tourist destination so that you may want to consider that if you decide on Nice. There were a lot of tourists there even in late September. The French people every where we went were so charming and friendly and of course the food was outstanding...along with the wine!
Hi Patrice! We've heard that Lyon and Bordeaux are nice. We might decide to check those out after Nice. Right now our schedule is to head to Versailles in December for 2 months and then we're staying in Nice for 3 months, mostly so we can check out the other towns along the coast as potential places to live full-time. Where we are right now in the Latin Quarter is very touristy and I wouldn't want to live here full-time, but it's definitely fun for the short-term. @@kjandtonylovefrance we have visited France many times and love Paris, but I think Provence is our favorite, if we were going to live there. We stayed in Aix-en-Provence, but visited all the small towns and villages in that region. Lyon is also very nice and the food is fabulous! Paris is so lovely and magical, but there are way too many tourists and it is very expensive to live there.

Living in a different environment is best for a good mood, keeps the brain alive😘 because at any new place you have to find out where everything is/how everything works what you need, be it the stove or the bakery with best croissants. Highly recommend this kind of lifestyle since it's full of surprises and let you feel fully alive🎉❤❤❤

The apartment is very small but it is great cause the amount of windows. It isn’t a cave. It’s a super cute place to be happy & to begin a new adventure ❤❤❤
Yes, we loved the month we spent there. We were back in Paris today and it felt like we were home. We still refer to locations as "that's right near our apartment" lol. It was very small but in many ways much nicer and more comfortable than where we are now in Nice.

When this video popped up, I felt compelled to stop watching after a minute so I could scroll over to the first video in the move to France series. I binged them all.
I was 66 when I rented a 4th floor apartment in the 11th arr. for a month. I can’t honestly say I got used to it, but I do believe I was less winded by the end.
BTW there is an elevator at Arc de Triomphe. I was 57 when I climbed the stairs. I thought I was gonna die. Don’t try it!

Love Paris so much. Spent the month of October with my husband in an apartment in the 5th Arrondissement also on the 5th floor. The elevator was out of order when we arrived with our luggage and as we struggled to climb the narrow staircase with suitcases and back packs up to the 5th floor, we had plenty of time to practice our French. Of course the elevator was fixed the next day. Looks like you don't even have an elevator, period. One good thing is living in Paris means that you never need to work out a gym, lots of walking involved. Thanks for sharing your adventures.

My favorite place. Latin quarter. My daughter had an apartment on St Germain when she studied at the Sorbonne. She also received her master's in French Lit. Visited her often. I would love to live in Paris. Retired fa, fly free, no $..🤪

I lived 4 yrs in Paris while on a US Govt assignment in the 80's. I lived in the 16th across from Bois de Boulogne. Great memories. It takes all of 24-hrs to become a lifelong food snob.
We've heard the 16th is very beautiful. I don't know that we've been there yet. Although we probably have and just didn't realize it. We were on an adventure yesterday on the Metro and got completely lost. Thanks for watching.
We went to France and stayed for 3 weeks our first place was a darling light- filled apartment. On the 5th floor- 97 steps!!!!

Not sure that revealing your street and (unique) front door was a good idea, especially on social media, most UA-camrs avoid it. Moving to Paris is a dream so many of us never realize, I applaud your decision and wish you happiness and adventure. Four flights will keep you healthy and walking in any European country is so very practical...walking and trains. A heater/towel warmer is a luxury! I personally think large homes are a bit of a waste; you feel a need to fill the space and often find you have rooms you don't use very often. With so much to explore you may not be home as much as you think; cozy may be perfect to come home to.
A few have mentioned the same, but this is temporary for only one month, we are actually headed to Versailles in a few days. I feel it is as safe as a hotel, if not moreso. Thank you for watching and for your concern 💜

Hello, from Naples, Florida. Congratulations on your move to France! You are blazing the trail from Florida for us. We are headed to Nice in spring 2024 to retire. I liked seeing your (temporary) apartment tour. It looks familiar. I think I looked at it as a place to stay on a past vacation. We passed on it because of the stairs. Been there done that. That's the problem with those old bldgs in the Latin Quarter. Now I don't book anything in France without checking on an elevator before booking. The suitcase "coffee tables" are cute. The small closets are my challenge for our move. Paring down clothes is going to be tough. We have been to Paris many times over the years. It's like a 2nd home. Just too expensive for a retirement town. We researched, made a list of potential retirement towns and then traveled to see them, over 19 days, a year ago. We decided on Nice because we believe it will cost us less to live in Nice than Paris and it ticked all of our other boxes. I speak French but my husband only speaks a few phrases. In Nice there is a big expat community and many people who work at restaurants, cafes and shops speak English, so it will be easier for my husband to communicate while he's learning French. We are just starting to sell most of our "stuff" in the house, here, on Craigslist and Facebook marketplace and Poshmark (clothes). Our goal is not to leave anything behind in the USA in storage. We may ship a dozen boxes, at most, to France and find a storage unit there. You noted you're leaving Paris after just 1 month. We were thinking of going to Paris for a month first too, before heading to Nice, but recently I read a few posts in one of the Facebook forums advising that we'll need to show a signed lease for at least a year when applying for the long stay visa and if we decide to move after we get to France, but can change addresses after we get there. They advised to stay at the same address you provide for the visa, for at least 90 days, because once you get your long stay visa and then register with the prefecture, after you arrive, you start getting mail from the French government regarding setting up your doctor's visit, getting on the French Healthcare System, etc and the French government will only mail the initial documentation and notifications to the address you gave them when you applied for the long stay Visa. And supposedly you get all this mail over a 90 day period and if you move the mail won't be forwarded. Plus you'd have to keep registering at each prefecture in the towns you move to. Sounded like a lot of extra work. I don't know if that's a fact. I still have to verify. We'll have to go to Miami for our appt to get the long stay resident Visas, so I may check with them in advance. We may have to stay at our first apt for 90 days. Did you happen to ask when you had your appointment what happens if you change addresses in France in a just a month's time? We look forward to watching your videos. Hi An! Thanks for all the info. I can tell you that based on our experience with the Long-Stay Visa interview (we also went to Miami), we did not have to have a year-long lease. I provided the 3 different locations with VRBO and AirBnB (and confirmations) and wrote a letter explaining that we are retiring to France and will be traveling around the country to find a place to live permanently. I only had the 3 reservations (1 month in Paris, 2 months in Versailles and 3 months in Nice). We, too, think we'll wind up in Nice or in one of the towns along the coast. The town of Menton looks appealing to us but we will not really know until we get there. We did register our Visas at the address where we are staying in Paris. They noted on the website that they would be contacting us for the medical exams either by mail or by email within 90 days. I thank you so much for the information you shared because I do plan to let the manager of our apt here in Paris know to look out for any mail sent to us after we leave. They (manager and owner) have been very accommodating to us and gave us a key to the mailbox for the duration of our stay. Thanks again, An! We too want to take our time finding the perfect long term rental. Maybe we will still book a month in Paris, just for a fun vacation, before finally moving on to Nice, if we can find a nice landlord/owner willing to assist us in case there's mail from the French government after we leave. Thanks for sharing your experience in Miami at your appointment. We picked Nice for several reasons, near the sea (we aren't huge beach in the daytime people now) but love to walk on the beach, have dinner and watch the sunset on the beach and just generally be near "big water" like we are now in Naples. There's also a major airport, close proximity to train station to connect us with all of Europe, it's easily walkable, don't need to buy a car, full of life, the energy, old Nice doesn't close at 9pm (like here in Naples and many other little villages we visited, in France). Also lots of English speakers (for my husband), because of Nice's history and settlers, good hospitals, healthcare for seniors. Nice was practically love at first sight. So beautiful and a warmer climate than Paris. When we go back to Nice next fall, to vacation, it will be 6-7 months before our move. I am hoping, while we are there, to find an inexpensive storage place I can ship our boxes of stuff (we don't want to part with) to, over the months before we move, so it gets there before us. I don't even know if that's possible but we'll try. I'll try. My husband jokes that he's afraid I will try to ship my entire closet of clothes, shoes and purses, so I can get away with less suitcases on moving day. Lol. Thank you so much for responding. We hope you find your perfect new home and enjoy your travels along the way. In the meantime we'll keep watching your "journey" as we embrace our own. Best wishes ❤️

I have lived for 15 years on an apartment with 4 flights of stairs. And the older people in my family (I was a teen), developed heart issues as a result of walking up the stairs daily. Short cardio bursts are bad for the heart. Long jogging where you break out a sweat is good, but walking up for 1-2 minutes and losing your breath is BAD for your cardio vascular health.
Maybe consider finding an apartment on the lower floors? 2 flights of stairs at the very most. You’ll benefit from this if you consider my advice.
Thank you for the advice. We are only here for one month, which is almost up. The time has flown by!! Wherever we end up full-time will not have 4 flights without an elevator... you can bet on that!

That takes me back. I went to Paris in 1970 for a junior year abroad, and stayed 16 years. Cherchez la femme... Then came 12 years in Germany (same femme). I have been back briefly, a number of times. Paris was, and perhaps still is, my home. I lived in the 5th. I remember the narrow hallways and two door system to get in. I see your small rooms with the tall windows and I feel the space. People were much smaller when they built the old parts of Paris. When I was there, the cafes were my living room and the restaurants were my dining room.
Paris has a character, a soul, that may be eternal. The last time it was significantly changed was by Napoleon, and he is probably not coming back. 😀

Hi Daniel!! You may want to check out the detailed response to John Lujan below where I give alot of the details of our trip (as it's planned so far). We paid about $2600 for our apartment here in the Latin Quarter for 30 nights through VRBO. You do get a break on the price when you book 30 nights or more. We anticipated (budgeted) about $3K a month using VRBO and AirBnB because we are going to be moving around quite a bit this year before we decide where we're going to settle full-time. I imagine it will be a lot cheaper once we find something where we're able to sign a lease for a long-term stay. The Visas were initially about $150-$175 each to apply (I think), and it was $200 each to register them in France once we arrived (definitely not cheap). I hope that's helpful. Thanks for watching!

Enjoy, I used to live nearby on Rue Temple. I was on the 5th floor and lost weight from the exercise. One good thing is to make sure you have all your shopping before climbing the stairs.

Good luck on your new adventure. I'm not sure what your goals are for this UA-cam channel but I can say for myself and others we go to find information about the process of getting the Visa and the budget one could expect. Would you be so kind as to offer your experience with the visa processing. And say the cost to rent your apartment and the process of obtaining it. Also I'm interested in relocating to France because of the better health care options but I have some pre existing condition and I will need to obtain full coverage for the first year. Don't know if this applies to either of you but if so it would be helpful to if you were able to get assume you did, full coverage for the first year. And do you intend to apply for the national healthcare program as is possible after three months on your long term visas? Also I think it's important to know that you each apply separately for your visas, even if you are married. The financial resources required are not too much but for some it could be more complicated. It's about 15000 per person per year I think? Again I have no idea your goals on this channel, but since you are open to comments, maybe just a little bit of your experiences, if you want to help others pondering the same thing. Ask yourself what you'd have liked to know before moving and for many, specifically, the cost to do it., the medical insurance requirements, the cost to rent your apartment in Latin quarter of Paris, was this the apartment you used as proof of residency? And the whole visa processing experience. I think this would help allot of people, if you'd rather not that of course is your choice and we won't take it personally. You are obviously very nice folks. Again, best of luck and enjoy your new adventure! But more information would be great 👍
Hi John - I am happy to share whatever may be helpful. Our goals for this channel are pretty broad at this point. We definitely want to share information that is going to be beneficial to others who are considering doing what we are doing and how to go about it. You'll find a few videos we already created about our process obtaining the Visas. Yes, we had to purchase the one year of health insurance. I'm not sure about the ability to apply for the national healthcare program here, but we will find out and report that as soon as we know more. We did have to register our visas (via the gov't website) once we got here (you have 3 months to do so) and according to the website, they'll be reaching out to schedule medical exams with us. This was a surprise, but nothing we are concerned about. It was $200 each to register our Visas (total $400). Our rent for 30 nights here in the Latin Quarter was $2600 through VRBO. I tried to find a 2 bedroom for December and January because one of our sons is coming to visit us over his winter break from grad school but the prices were outrageous. We found a place in Versailles (2 bedroom) for about $3000 a month. We go to Nice in February and we found a 2 bedroom there for about $2000 a month. Both Versailles and Nice were booked using AirBnB. For us, this has been the most convenient way to book our apartments since we are moving around to determine where we would like to end up permanently. We absolutely love Paris, but the rent here is a fortune. I recently discovered it is the 2nd most expensive city to live in the world. Although, I certainly understand why. Like I said, we really love it here. We are anticipating that once we decide where we are going to put down roots that we'll be able to rent for far less than through Airbnb and VRBO. We'll let you know. We will definitely create a video reiterating this information and other helpful tips within the next few weeks, but wanted to answer you directly first. We actually have this in other videos on our channel in the lead up to our move, but I'm sure we'll be going over it again soon. The short version is that we have been approved for long-stay visas and had to buy a one year medical insurance policy that costs about $1000 per person. We are only renting this apt for one month and then move on to Versailles and then Nice. We are checking out different places before we decide where we would like to settle. We paid $2641 for one month here in the Latin Quarter.

Hi Lara! Yes, I think that's a wise move. I remember when my parents retired down to Florida and they spent a month or two in different spots to discover where they wanted to stay for the long-term. We are using that same approach here in France, spending the first year testing the waters in a variety of different places. Hi Yolanda! Yes, it's too small, for sure. But the windows are actually quite fabulous. Lots of natural light. And, yes, very expensive.... but normal for this area and a VRBO or AirBnB property. It's actually more expensive if you were only staying for a week! I'm definitely glad it's temporary, but enjoying it for now. It's very cozy and the bed is so comfortable I am praying that our next apartment in Versailles has an equally comfy bed 🤲 Thanks for watching.

bathroom wall heated towel rack....suggestion. open your clamshell suitcases, they may fit under the bed that way. there are items you can order as well, that you can place under each foot on the bed to lift it an inch or two, for more room.
