This channel is so frickin underrated
Agreed
I have my first no shin guard fight coming up actually, thank you!
Good luck!
Thanks brother!
Good luck man
Good Luck my man🙏❤
good luck, have fun!
My legs been hurt with shin pads. Especially when I first started sparring. I'm better now but I use to get bad bruises and id be limping. Learned to place kicks better and set them up instead of just throwing them wildly. I haven't competed with out shins. Good vid to help me decide if I ever will.
@Great White than you havent sparred with heavyer guys
@Great White lmfao prove it and I take it back
@Great White why should I believe You? Or that you dont use shin pads and that you are a heavyweight? I train Kickboxing at Golden Glory and I have freands who fought Amatuer that are heavyweights and I know no one who would let them do sparring wirhout shinpads or even sparr with them if they wouldent use pads.
I had my first non shin pad amateur fight last year on 11 July. It was a surprisedly painless experience during the fight, but after (a minute after my fight).... a day later.... almost a week later... yeah it hurt.
It felt good fighting without shin pad. At first I was hesitant as I only had 3 Novice fights (with shin pads) prior to that fight. Only conditioning I did (which I consider conditioning) was jogging, skipping, kicking bags and pads, and sparring with shinpads.
I remember on the first round I blocked his low kick with a check, Shin-on-shin contact... felt like nothing. Felt so cool back then.
I didn’t know there are amateurs without shinpads. Where you fight at?
I only had 1 amateur fight with shinpads.
In Canada most amateur used to be just gloves.
I think the commissions are now asking for 3 fights with full gear.
@@mansamusa2012 In New Zealand. it's normal to have amateur fights with no shinpads and headgear. Novice fights involve shinpads. (so I had 3 novice and 1 amateur). No one here wears headgear nowadays.
@@GabrielVargaOfficial same here in New Zealand.
where I'm from you can have 1-4 novice fights (with shinpads and/or headgear included (up to the fighter)). On average people choose to go amateur (no shinpads) after 2-3 novice fights
@@GabrielVargaOfficial can you fight with shin guards as a pro?
When I did muay thai I tried kicking palm trees and wooden posts outside. Then roll out the shin with rolling pin... was hell but really helped to win exchanges. But then I switched to straight boxing.
In my sparring circle we occasionally spar light-medium rounds specifically to help adjust for the fight.
When my first fight came, I got a karate kid who didn’t know how to check a kick well.
When he did check I felt the impact but it didn’t hurt near as much as I thought it would. Shins were bruised afterwards but overall nothing to be scared of.
When I got my heavy bag it didn't come filled so I just put sand in it thinking that would be good. I'm pretty sure I stress fractured my shins the first time I kicked the bag even lightly and punching it was like punching a wall. 😂 I very quickly dumped most of the sand and put old shirts in there. 1/10 would not recommend, literally any other filling would have been better probably
sand becomes concrete on those bags and i see it in a lot of gyms. guess what, no one hits those bags lmao. old cloth is best
Great Vid as always ❤
Great advices ! Thanks.
I really appreciate your content brother. Thank you for these videos🤞🏽💫
hell yeah a new vid!!!
High Quality Video🤝🏾
Nice consistency of uploads
Absolutely great content !! Thank you for talking about this.
Thank you for the video master
lol the timing on this video for me is kind of freaky, got my first no shin fight in September! love the content keep it coming!
sir, thanks for the idea, i always being scared of sparring without shine pad. but the idea u gave really make sense to me. thanks from malaysia
Coach u are the best I will definetly come to u when u start training fighters my dream is to train with u
Thank you greatly, God Bless.
Thanks Gabriel. Love this channel.
Glad to hear it!
Yep im well aware of this.thanks btw
Amazing how little info there is on this! Fantastic video
don't forget skateboarding as a kid! it is a natural toughening process that involves conditioning your body against a planet crashing into you. oh, and you learn to deal with pain. because every mistake is a guaranteed bruise. I hit my funny bone so many times, I don' think i have a funny bone left in my body, they are all dead serious now...
You always bring us such high quality and relevant info dude - I can’t wait till this knee injury heals up and I can get back in the ring 😎🤩
Get well soon brother 🙏
have a quick recovery
First 😁 much love Gabriel
Hi Gabriel, I'd like to ask you something that maybe you could use as a topic for another video: since you're a former karate practitioner, do you ever train kata? Do you think they have some benefits for full-contact fighting sports? Or maybe, do you think they can be useful as a workout?
Thank you for all your contents, keep it up man!
Quality and quantity!
How did you find your first fight without pads? Was it much different than competing in full gear?
It didn't hurt in the fight but after lol
I did 1 mma fight, which obviously had no shinpads but I had a foot injury so I didn't even really kick much lol
@@treadstoned9915 Awesome haha, do you plan on doing another one or was it just for the experience?👀
@@ryvaleska yeah I dont plan on making a career out of it but ive been wanting to do it or a kickboxing fight at least once more while im still young enough.
Great video, all truth, very good tips, here is how we condition our shins: ua-cam.com/video/YFKkOt5jyPk/v-deo.html
I almost never train with shin pads, and I went years doing mostly glove drills and light sparring instead of pad hitting (like cuban or russian boxing drills, active blocking and angling out), now I finally have some good partners for "traditional" pad drilling and thai style body conditioning
Now I'm training for a fight, and trying to decide between Pro MMA (there is no amateur MMA in ontario)
Or amateur muay thai, where my favourite techs are banned (no elbows, break after 2 strikes in clinch), people wear HEADGEAR and SHINPADS...
For someone with limited time hitting heavy bags and pads, what are your favourite ways to develop power?
I'm confident in my defences and angles (and clinch), now I need to work on blasting
Good luck! You have amateur kickboxing?
I say try out amateur muay thai first and then try out pro mma
If it dont allow elbows and break clinch after 2 strikes, it isnt a amateur muay thai, its K1, If they are saying its muay thai, they are liar
Great Topic
As we get older we lose bone density, with that said performance enhancing drugs brittles the bones the fighters mentioned fall into this category.
Great
Can you do a video dedicated to conditioning your midsection against power kicks?
Checking even a 1/10 speed kick with no shin pads is excruciating
What to expect?: Pain
🔥🔥🔥
It's very important to know how to properly set up, time, and throw round kicks to avoid breaking your shin or lower leg just like Anderson Silva, Chris Weidman, and Conor McGregor.
Hey Gabriel,
What do you do for your thighs?
You just have people drill your legs with kicks?
Love the channel keep up the awesome videos.
Shout out from Ontario!
Yes sir. Just kick my legs until they are sore. I usually do that 3-4 times a week when training for a fight.
@@GabrielVargaOfficial Jesus, for real? Do you have a drill for that, or explaining it how it works? How many minutes does it take? thanks
I'm fighting in the next 3 days without shinpads in my second fight in Muay Thai. Thank you!
How did it go!
@@confettihunterminus1 It turn out that i had to fight with shinpads lol
Only throw lock kicks if you are sure they do not get properly checked 🤷🏻♂️🙈😁
what are lock kicks? thanks
5 Things that make Valentina so good
I struggle with the shin pads in class because i cant tell if im making solid contact as much as id like…i enjoy that haptic feedback and sting of my shin hitting targets. Is there advice? Is it just mental? Is it a consistency thing?
Also get used to catching kicks without shin pads, when you spar with shin pads and you catch someone’s kick the shin pads make it very hard for them to slide their leg out. But with no shin pads plus the Thai boxing liniment and sweat it is very easy to slide your legs out of catches and much harder to hold onto a caught kick.
I hadn't thought of that! Also more painful no doubt to catch.
hey, when the video your review about our fottage gonna release
It will probably take a week or two. I have over 140 videos to look at.
My two cents: buy those super shitty, thin shin pads on Amazon for like $40. They're a great intermediate step between sparring with shin pads and without, and I like to use these sometimes when I'm training accuracy.
Wait they're $40? You can buy the Combat Sports ones for like $15

Just think of them young Thai kids not fighting with shinpads and man up and get on with it 🤣
On a serious note great video I felt a bit of pain without shinpads but it’s more afterwards and by then it’s just like having a bruise or something on your shin you really hurts if you knock it again That was my experience anyway
Love your vids and your great input. Some of the highest like-dislike ratios I have ever seen (currently 651-0) - and well deserved.
I'm glad everyone seems to enjoy the videos. Those likes are super appreciated 🙏
@@GabrielVargaOfficial shin guards are for amateurs
Is it any different if you don’t wear shin pads but your partner does? I fight in Kyokushin and shin pads are optional.
So the lack of shinguards for me isn't a problem and there's a good reason for that...
When I was a teenager I started knuckle and shin conditioning by wrapping my hands and shins with gauze and slowly kicking and punching trees over and over again. From time to time the skin would break and usually that's a good sign to stop for that session.
Anyway, long story short it got to the point of removing the wraps and striking the tree full force with a little pain but nothing too bad. It takes a while to condition like that, but once you do your conditioning will be well beyond anyone else's.
How come in kickboxing and muay thai fighters are rarely seen without ankle supports yet you hardly see them in mma?
I think its because the ankle supports give added grip on foot and knee submissions.
most or a high precentage of commissions don't allow them
Exactly. Not allowed in the U.S very often.
In Europe or Asia no problem.
Shins and legs always hurt more than anything else
My first fight was a muay Thai fight with no shin guard, it was ok, the pain only come next day :v
Can you go into further anatomical detail because I was taught the exact opposite. I was always taught to kick with the instep because aside from the upper portion of the tibia near the knee it has the highest density and where the growth plates are. The shaft of the tibia is filled with marrow making it less dense. Also I only kick with the foot when going for head kicks as to not break the metatarsals.
I think it’s good to hit the head with that part of your foot so your foot can wrap around the back of your opponents head. But if that part hit an elbow you can fuck it up bad.
Do you need to condition your thighs to take eat those Low kick ?
Yeah, if you have a partner you can do “1-2’s” or “1-2-3”” then lightly work up strength of low kicks on each other . You can use shin guards at first. Like Dutch training.
I don't know if my shins are under conditioned, or if I kick too hard, but my shins still get super banged up sparring with shinguards. I've been training 4 years. Anyone relate?
That sounds odd. Are your shinpads pretty worn out?
Anyone else thinking about Conner while watching?
Bro why don't you let dana know you
I never fought without shin pads. Sadly I never fought without breaking something. I broke my arm but it was from a knee.
Second fight was a leg check and I broke the little supporting bone in my shin. Bugger. The shin bone was from a bad check that I've fixed and the first break was where I've had surgery on my arm before. The feeling is weird. Chances are you'll be fine. Even when I broke my fibular it hurt but it more scared me than dropped me with a wobbly leg. Just a bit of a limp and the doctor didn't even find the break until I got a second opinion. The fight that broke my arm was from a champion who was an absolute beast that knocked out a bloke I looked up to at my gym that had a bunch of professional fights. That was a rock hard knee and hopefully you don't experience that on your first fight man, fucking damn it was just a clean break and the surgeon said my bones were fine, it was just a solid impact.
You have to be pretty unlucky to deal with what I had to and a few years later, I'm just fine and ready to have another crack. Just remember on your first fight that you wanted this and you can try to show everyone how you learned to fight and what you're style and toughness can bring to Muay Thai or kickboxing or whatever discipline you're into. Getting into the ring will feel unreal (in a good way) even if it doesn't go well for you.
Thais spar without shin guards.
Soshin
Get some half-decent Muay Thai pads and smash the life outta them. Definitely the way forward!
Timing? Don’t know the guy. Kick hard and pretend it doesn’t hurt.
Don’t take my advice, I finish my fights with swollen legs.
I sparred for 7 years without using shinpads... And nothing bad ever happened. In fact, nothing bad ever happened to anyone's shins in my dojo. Getting your shins knocked up is a natural part of strengthening your shin bone. You get a bruise and then next week your bone's internal structures have healed and solidified stronger than before.
There is absolutely no point to using shin pads, ever.
you know mr gabriel varga i am beginning to understand martial arts more knowing how to pick the right ones savate need shoes to compete out of my list pankration overrated and not many gyms in america so i have 6 of the best martial art fighting styles of all time i want to learn in the us sanda, muay thai, dutch kickboxing, combat sambo, bjj, boxing i might add other kickboxing styles that are for safe to learn not american kickboxing overrated not Pradal serey, yaw yan, lethwei they are cambodian ,filipino burmese kickboxing to brutal you get me i might add japanese and korean kickboxing if they are taught in us like the 6 i told you also kickboxing styles vs martial arts styles kickboxing wins.
