    While l first started training MT, my shins and knees were a cut up and gashed mess. After the daily training sessions, l would go jump in the ocean. I can’t believe the rapid healing that occurred from this. The joint pain was also helped a lot as well. This turned into a ritual and l can hardly wait to get back to Thailand to train.

    Kicking the bag and training volume! All the miles and miles of roadwork also helps condition the bones in your lower leg

    Serrated! I always wondered how to describe my shins after doing Thai Boxing since the early 80’s. That’s a perfect description right there. GREAT channel and awesome content btw!

    I've been doing martial arts for years now, never realized that my shins were serrated until you mentioned it. Super crazy feeling.

    Your bones have a covering, Periosteum, and when it gets hits, especially on your shins, it tends to bunch up and get hard.

      Are there possible health concerns later in life as a result of years of competitive kick-boxing's thickening of tibia periosteum? Thanks.

      @@Garrett1240 not a scientist, but probably depends on how much and intense you did it. Up to a point there is conditioning, pass that point and you break up your body. Boxer Knuckles are a serious issue. Especially people who regularly punch bare knuckle on hard surfaces tend to serious have problems later in life.
      Any1 in here with decades of experience who wants to share his experience about his shin? I have always wondered too.

    Hey, I just started muay thai and I was wondering if you had any tips on how to not break your shins. I've also watched the Anderson Silva fight and I was wondering how common it is. Your video had some great tips by the way on how to toughen up your shins but is it enough?

      This is probably really late ,but those shin breaks mostly happen when the kicker is angling up and it catches on a defender's elbow. Then it's all that force on a tiny jagged point... And .... Snap! That is why 'proper' kicking, especially proper roundhouse kicking, do not arc up. Simply rotate horizontally. Don't be lazy, pick up the knee and arc across, not up.

      The other reply was 100% accurate, but a lot of the time (and especially in Andersons case) it's bc fighters have been using PEDs for years without taking precautions to avoid among other side effects low bone density...

    I am going to get a heavy bag soon and start spending regular time kicking that, hopefully in time my shins harden up as well.

    i once hit my shin during pe class 2 years ago (before starting with muay thai and bjj ) against the idk how it is called: like the gymnasts rack while swinging that i had a big bump in my shin like yours lul (at first i though i had broken my shin in half bc it hurt so much ....but only for a few seconds though)

    I hit the heavy bag 3 times a week at the gym with the shin kick. I won't hit harder objects, though. The shin will have to get tougher against canvas only.

      Depends on what you do. I’ve heard some people doing no shin on shin contact until 2 years into Muay Thai. The difference between hitting a heavy bag and shin is pretty extreme though

    I often think how the Thai fighters at 60/70 years old walk and if they have problems from the fighting ??

    I think it’s everything you said plus blessed with the DNA of fairly dense bone structure. I’m not sure everyone can achieve that level of hardness regardless of conditioning. 🤷‍♂️

    Haha I've wondered what was going on for the last few years. I've got permanent bruises and divets from the conditioning I had 🤣
    Getting back into it and I'm excited to feel that pain again

    why don't you hit it with big size soft drink plastic bottle filled with water and afterward a plastic bottle filled with fine grain sand; and then later with dried bamboo because it is hard but light unlike a green bamboo which is heavy. That is what I am doing with my shin so that in case i am negligent and hit my shin on a chair i will not cringe for pain.
