I love the game, play it a lot and watching development materials I think main reason was simply that gameplay is focused on small but specialized cities. A lot of effort went onto multiplayer, region interactions, Great Works, etc. The scale is just different than people expected and focus is on other aspects of simulation than just map size. Unfortunately, most of players didn't appreciate the idea. Cities in regions are hard coded and very specifically, manually positioned in the region and populated with resource maps by hand. There is no randomness or procedural generation, as well as there is no terrain editor. The game design decision to have smaller cities lies in a very base of the game. Increasing city size even twice would just not work in the game mechanics or it would require substantial changes and refactoring to codebase, I'm pretty sure. That's why when people demanded bigger cities they couldn't deliver them in reasonable terms, or at all, considering that at launch game had many other bugs and issues. And then they just shut down the studio after a year. Personally, I love the game and I hope Maxis know that they created a fantastic game (after many gameplay and UI iterations, based on the early development videos). After all patches and DLC game is in great state, though has much more potential.
Geeze I remember watching this video and being like "WWWHHAAT!! THIS LOOKS AWESOME!" Something must have happened during development. I'm not sure I've ever seen a game where the development footage looks way better than the final product. Don't get me wrong I like SimCity and the graphics are really pretty but my gaming PC eats this game for breakfast. They should have kept the original graphics...SO much nicer.
Gaming Buddie they also dropped the texture quality too. The user interface was also overhauled. It's little wonder Maxis was closed...AGAIN. We can kiss these IP'S goodbye. And honestly, seeing how rushed Maxis was I'm really not going to miss them. The Sims 4, once I tried it out, really was deserving of the criticism. No idea what happened...these games should have been instant hits. They had years worth of revisions to determine a "best in class" game.
Yeah, I played 76 effing hours of SimCity, because even though it is fucking terrible, it is (well after Cities Skylines releases) was the best city builder in this style. I never liked Maxis THAT much, I liked Sims 2 and SimCity 4 and 2000. Spore was terrible. Many things wrong with SimCity were Maxis fault. They did the gameplay that way NOT EA. They fucked up the path finding etc... I got to disagree with Sims though, Sims 4 are the best Sims game. Emotions make it feel natural, expansion is gonna allow you to control Sims at their workplace, it runs well (NOT 10 minute loading times like Sims 3). I have put over 50 hours into Sims 4 and I love it. The first 5 hours were "WTF IS THIS PIECE OF CRAP?" but after I really got into it I started loving it. The problem is that most people played it for an hour and wrote a review.
Gaming Buddie I wish I could like The Sims 4 but I can't bring myself to. The world is a pain in the ass to manage. Even though you can go places there's not much point to do so. Sims conversations are more expressive but they barely look each other in the eye. They had to patch in Sims saying goodbye to each other for God's sake. I really gave The Sims 4 a shot and I figured"oh these people saying it's boring are full oh shit!" Lo and behold I turned the game off last week and haven't even thought about going back. I really was bored, and after a few hours too many of schizoid Sims' wildly fluctuating "emotions" I think I had my fill. There's only so many patches that can revive that game I fear. Plus, all the little things that start to snowball would b FAR too many to list, before people jump all over my throat.
Still an amazing game, such a shame it had the launch issues. Yes, maps are claustrophobic and launch issues aside, it's darn addictive and I struggle to play Cities: Skylines because it just doesn't capture my attention as much as SimCity (2013) does.

IM USING IT :) Gameplay Strategy Video #1: Starting a City (SimCity coming March 5, 2013)
the maps arent huge or you have never tried filling it all up,it just says that you have reached the limit of road you can put down like what is this shit?
Simcity: Needs Offline,Mods,Bigger Maps,And Something to make it easier to play like less computer power to run it faster By the way EA this video encouraged me to buy this game
Today, they announced that SimCity would hit retail and online stores on March 5, 2013 in North America... I CANNOT WAIT!!! I need more videos please!!!
Boy I thought EA was totally gonna screw it up. But as a 16-year Sim City player (starting with 2000!) I can honestly say this looks really really cool, and I'm looking forward to... TODAY!!! Comes out today :D
really looking forward to the release date! great demo!! the only thing that needs fixing @1:57 : the symbol and blue color suggest it's an "Autobahn". A "Bundesstraße" has yellow boards with black letters and it doesn't use the Autobahn symbol.
LOVE SimCity... I bought Cities XL to hold me over until Simcity comes out.... its not the same.. there is something special about Simcity that makes it stand out from the rest. I CANT WAIT TO BUY IT!!
OMG are they finally going back to residental, commercial and industrial as a single choice instead of the low, medium and high density... THANK YOU... I was NEVER a big fan of that low, medium, high options. Thank you
GIVE ME THAT GAME AND TAKE MY FUCKING MONEY ALREADY!! More seriously though, I think you guys did/are doing a great job. I've been playing SimCity since 2000 and I can't tell you how many years I've been hoping for a Simcity 5 to come out after you guys abandoned me back when Simcity 4 came out. Don't slack. The Sims is great and all but this game is what started it all for you guys. It's one of the only games I buy from EA and I can guarantee I will be there when this game comes out
Well, that's nice. I just wanted a chance to use the "over 9000: meme. I'm satisfied now that you have provided the opportunity for me to take advantage of.
I think Maxis should do a live stream playthrough where he just builds his own city, giving us a sneak peak of what the game will be outside beta restrictions
In SimCity 4, you could specify like high-rises and such (basically, suburbs or big apartment buildings), same with commercial and industrial. But in direct to your question, no. In SC4, you could choose specific places like schools, fire stations, etc etc, but general residential and commercials; no. I'm not sure if any of this changed in SC5; in SC4 you could RENAME buildings, but maybe they added more in this update.
Yes i know the feeling, Hurry up Tuesday. I was lucky to get the oppertunity to play the last beta, it made me want to play more. 1hr wasn't long enough lol, i did it lie three times lol. I've even gone back to playing Sim City 4 Rush Hour lol.
good to hear, im also having loads of fun with the game. most gamers nowadays are older than 11 years though, but its good to know they set a proper age limit apparently
the zoning had so much potential, you can see exactly where the buildings will go and how big they'll be, they could have just given you a bit more control in the size the individual zones are and be done with it but instead they decided to remake the zoning system so you don't have any control or idea where the building will go and how big they'll be
The Limited Edition/Collector Edition has London, Paris and Berlin city features such as tourist attractions (Efiel Tower, Big Ben...) public transport (red London buses) and if you have one of the city monuments in your city the build style will change to suit for city's monument.
I am glad this reboot is coming. Over the years SimCity has got to demanding with all the bloody micromanaging. This looks good. It keeps the stragic vaules of the original SimCity but at the same time. Does not over welm you with thousands of smalls micromanaging problems. Glad they got rid of the building every bloody powerline and water pipe. That was a where the game started to go down hill in Sim 2000. Which it only went down hill from there.
I even heard that the Trinity Bay region has smaller town plots than what will come, and is a small region overall, they say some big regions can have multiple separate rail, highway, and water systems with up to 16 cities!
1. it is Possible to do a 90 degree angle: There is a little Curvy thing where he connected that moves in when the train is turning, and then moves it when it goes straight, and if it goes backwards is turns into another angle.
I really like the city specialization thing and the modules... in SIMCITY and also its buildings (its design) Especially at night and also its music( I really like listening to it) I hope Cities skylines adds city specializations(more specialization to choose) and its trading thing.... Right now Cities skylines doesn't really capture my attention as much as SIMCITY 5.../2013 Does...
I've played both betas, this game is actually way better than Stone Librande makes out in his strategy videos. Granted, it's easy to get annoyed when you spend all your money and still have some debts to pay off but it's all part of the fun in the end.
Reseidential, in fact all zoned buildings have to be placed on bigger or upgraded roads before they can become higher density for instance a two lane road can only support low density buildings (much like in real life)
The best thing with EA is to wait. Sooner or later, as you said, there will be DRM with a package price. Just look at BF3 for example; total of 5 expansions or so for a lower total price than the first game that were released.
About having armies in SimCity, if thats what you want then go play SC2 or Total War or any RTS type game, SimCity is about simulation and creation its not about building just to destroy. The closest thing you should get to "army attack waves" is AI driven UFO invasions where your city is attacked by aliens and if you don't have any STA type weapons then the aliens will cause HEAVY damage to buildings and abduct sims before finally leaving (alien invasions would be categorised as a disaster).
I cant wait for this game I was always a fan of the R-zoning and C-zoning and I-zoning tools placing stuff singularly was not as fast or efficient (like in Societies)
Still waiting for the SimCity and Sims combined. You know, where you can build an entire city but can still zoom-in on a house and play indepth with any of all of the sims. The effects you have on the city effect your sims lives: If you don't place a water tower, your sims wont have water from sinks and stuff rather than it just miraculously appearing. Also when your sims pay bills, they pay it to you (the mayor) to build and improve more of the city. See where I'm going with this?
i was so disappointed when they said they were discontinuing the series and this one looks so realistic and fun. i'm very excited.
How can the "NOT FINAL SOFTWARE" be actually BETTER than the "FINAL SOFTWARE"?!
Welcome to EA.
+DIGITALDYNE i hope this too. EA is bullshit. maxis is life
Lucas Hoffmamm The only difference I see is the UI and how the zoning looks.
Just EA things...
8:19 that's true until you run out of room because of the city SIZE LIMIT!!!!!!!
why didn't you guys have larger maps? Everything else was amazing
I love the game, play it a lot and watching development materials I think main reason was simply that gameplay is focused on small but specialized cities. @@vnshngpnt if maxis dont shut down we definetly have the bigger map size
@@vnshngpnt This game is better than Cities Skylines in my opinion.
@@SquidCenayep Cities Skylines 2 is not playable anyway. It is full of errors we need New simcity series

Doesn't capture your attention in what way? It's pretty much a replica of SC4 built in a modern engine.
Same ;l CS is great (literally, the maps are huge) but Simcity has this special atmosphere no other game can give me :l
ikr

Isac joga Thanks
I miss the old gui and also the grid you had when you build your city
The background music is amazing! I need this game now
Before the game came out, I would watch this non-stop. It's interesting to see the change from this version of the game before the final release.
i kinda wish that the wide zoning was still a thing, and well, a lot stuff!
The music is still unmatched. I mute the music of my Cities Skylines and just play Simcity 2013 OST in the background.
Did anyone see that wind power plant with 122mph of wind?
This actually looks to be really good, more in depth than its predecessors.
I can watch this over and over and over and over and over, i think you get the point, untill either the game or part 2 comes out
I hate that the cities are soooo small! I have to cramp everything together
OMG I love his amazing voice :D
Who is watching this 10 years later
Me
Looks amazing! I've never played a sim city game before but I'll definitely buy this.
I played the beta. I've never anticipated a game more in my life. This may well be the first game I preorder!
Recommended in 2021 lol
Today, they announced that SimCity would hit retail and online stores on March 5, 2013 in North America... I CANNOT WAIT!!! I need more videos please!!!
This is the game I have always wanted Sim City to be. THANK YOU so much. Buying day 1 for sure!
I've watched this a few time now and im really looking forward to it coming out. Can't wait to see part 2 tho
I agree, this one looks suspiciously better then what we actually got. I would love to play this version.
So weird that the game is nothing like this. Love it. Been able to play for the last few days
Props to the guy who made/commentaried this video.. amazing job bro
Boy I thought EA was totally gonna screw it up. But as a 16-year Sim City player (starting with 2000!) I can honestly say this looks really really cool, and I'm looking forward to... TODAY!!! Comes out today :D
I was also 16 ten years ago…. Look how much we’ve aged.
Didn't even notice they'd changed that but having played the full game now I totally agree that the zoning in this was loads better.
Its amazing to see this video and the leastest sim city 2013 video and see how much they improoved the game!
(srry about my english)
really looking forward to the release date! great demo!! the only thing that needs fixing @1:57 : the symbol and blue color suggest it's an "Autobahn". A "Bundesstraße" has yellow boards with black letters and it doesn't use the Autobahn symbol.

Watching this after seeing Beta game play videos it's nuts how much the interface has changed in the past few months.
This game looks amazing. AMAZING. Can't wait for March 2013 to get my grubby hands on this.
i need this now i've waiting my whole life for a game like this i can't wait 3 more months
OMG are they finally going back to residental, commercial and industrial as a single choice instead of the low, medium and high density... THANK YOU... I was NEVER a big fan of that low, medium, high options. Thank you
I love the way he said and how he said that he is going to dump the waste over here and hopefully his sims dont notice.
i like the whole train-table feel... it makes me feel happy like im commanding a living model
as soon as i heard him talking i knew this would be good

i have been watching these videos to an unhealthy degree now
This SimCity is SimCity 5, really, they just wanted to call it SimCity. The 1st four have already been released.
i honestly enjoy this game
I have seen this video like 20 times! lol
I can't wait for part 2
I can't wait for this came to come out. Please hurry! I can't wait any longer.
Stone Librande probably has the most soothing voice ever.
OMG I CANT WAIT FOR THE FULL VERSION!!! OH GEESE OH GEES!!!

This is what I thought Simcity Societies was gonna be like and was greatly disappointed. Can't wait for this to come out, hurry up 2013!!
exactly what i wanted to be improved upon when i was playing simcity 4...and a whole lot more =)
March is crowded, but this looks amazing.
The UI looks way more interesting than in the betas!
Three days before my birthday, I know what I'm asking for :D
AWESOME!!!! I WAITED MY LIFE FO THIS!!!
Woohoo - got an invite for the beta this weekend :)
Reseidential, in fact all zoned buildings have to be placed on bigger or upgraded roads before they can become higher density for instance a two lane road can only support low density buildings (much like in real life)
This looks fantastic!
The best thing with EA is to wait. Sooner or later, as you said, there will be DRM with a package price. Just look at BF3 for example; total of 5 expansions or so for a lower total price than the first game that were released.
Crazy how much the UI has changed since then.
Yes, it will, they said that in the maxis live broadcast.
omg new video soon either the 11th or the 18th they said next tuesday on facebook but that could mean either one soo excited!!!!!!!
Oh. Thank you very much. I was so confused on the copies of the game.
Its a fun little game and it makes my 11 year old happy so it was worth the money
I hope this game will get real awesome, even though I fear it wont, but IF, I will probably play it for years to come...
the game is available in 2 different versions: limited edition and digital deluxe edition. The digital deluxe edition has 3 extra building sets.
CAN YOU PLEASE MAKE THE NEXT STRATEGY VIDEO! I LOVE SIMCITY AND THIS VIDEO MADE ME PREORDER IT!
this game looks great cant wait to play it
About having armies in SimCity, if thats what you want then go play SC2 or Total War or any RTS type game, SimCity is about simulation and creation its not about building just to destroy. The closest thing you should get to "army attack waves" is AI driven UFO invasions where your city is attacked by aliens and if you don't have any STA type weapons then the aliens will cause HEAVY damage to buildings and abduct sims before finally leaving (alien invasions would be categorised as a disaster).
just pre-ordered! can't wait
it's really ironic that the "not final software" looks even better and more promising than the beta
it means to be always connected to the internet and EA watching your every move that you do in the game and in the game files
I cant wait for this game I was always a fan of the R-zoning and C-zoning and I-zoning tools placing stuff singularly was not as fast or efficient (like in Societies)
i bet if he would make some game tutorials he would be one of the greatest
PIPES? YOU DON'T NEED WATER PIPES?
That's revolutionary. Holy crap.
This looks good! I can't wait. Does it come out on the mac March 8? I saw that date floating around somewhere...
i want it so badly... i cant wait anymore.
