  • Dr. Keith Sterling, Chief, Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology at Inova Alexandria Hospital, explains how doctors are able to use a painless, non-invasive ultrasound to assess a persons venous anatomy, vein-valve function and any venous changes, and help determine if that person is a good candidate for vein ablation, a minimally invasive alternative to surgical ligation, or vein stripping, for varicose veins.
Vein ablation is a highly effective, outpatient procedure that offers vastly reduced pain and quicker recovery when compared to traditional treatments. The doctor guides a thin catheter through any vein affected by venous disease. Laser or radiofrequency energy is applied to the inside of the vein, causing it to heat and seal closed, preventing blood from flowing in the wrong direction. Other, healthy veins take over to re-establish blood flow to the area.
Treatment takes less than one hour, and no surgical incision or stitches are required. Symptom improve, and most people return to normal activity, immediately, with over-the-counter medication taking care of any pain relief required. Success rates range from 93% to 95%, with a very low rate of recurrence.
