7 Overlooked Reasons Why Your A1C May Be Inaccurate

  • The A1C blood test provides information about average blood glucose levels, also called blood sugar, over the past three months. The test is sometimes referred to as the hemoglobin A1c, HbA1c, or glycohemoglobin test. The test result is reported as a percentage. The higher the percentage, the higher a person's average blood glucose levels, which can cause complications in people with diabetes. A normal A1C level is below 5.7 percent.
The A1C test may be used as a diagnostic tool to see how well diabetes is being measured, but some factors may render the test not as accurate as would be expected.
In this video I review 7 of those factors which may cause the A1C to be either falsely high or falsely low.

*7 overlooked signs of inaccurate A1C:*
    1) Anemia
    2) High triglycerides
    3) Spleen disorders
    4) Anemia treatment
    5) Blood donation
    6) Pregnancy
    7) Hemolysis

This is an excellent explanation of inaccurate A1C reading. My triglyceride is 69 and my fasting glucose is 100. My hemoglobin is 12 and rbc count is 4.1, both on low end. A1C IS 6.2, so that makes sense. I think my A1C value is incorrect.

Do you have an update, please? Did you get to the bottom of it?....like you, all my blood markers, triglycerides etc are good/excellent, but my HbAlc is 6.2...a reply would be greatly appreciated.

I have been seen the past years an increase of A1C levels with the most recent of 6.1 and fasting glucose between 100-110, hgb of 13.1 and with mch levels of 25….perhaps the low MCH levels are skewing my a1c and glucose?? Im a 48 year male… I am fit and eat well

Can anemia cause a1c as high as 13? T1D for 30+yrs. My sugars run 70 -180, bmi 25, basal 24.2u, bolus 1u/17g, rarely see any above 250 postprandial, usually 130 pre prandial and 180 post. No ketones ever. I dont consume table sugar or syrups or juice, just water or coffee w/Splenda, diet soda every other day, and half my diet is raw veggies or chicken/pork/egg. I work actively in between hypos, and treat with 15-30g carb, whole wheat with pb or milk. I eat one meal evening, and rest of day only if sugar drops due to work. Its been over a year of only consuming 100g carb or less per day, i portion and weigh and can count carbs on nearly any food in my cabinet by memory. I track everything. Bmi is steady whole year but a1c has never matched my records in 30 years and im sick of doctors increasing insulin causing more seizures.

my Dad had a1c of 5.6-6.7, but his daily blood glucose readings were from 140-300. i think his a1c doesn't reflect his average BG readings at home. could it be his BG monitor at home is off? he doesn't fit any of the falsely low a1c reasons you explained. And thank you for explaining this very important information, appreciate your time!

I have a possible answer for you from Prof Ben Bikman, cell biologist, who said SOME people with high blood sugar (either due to insulin resistance or just consistently eating too many carbs) are paradoxically seeing a low a1c due to early death of the red blood cells. The cells are dying before they get a chance to glycate, lowering a1c. The early death of the blood cells possibly being related to the elevated blood sugar itself.

Mine is opposite, I have a very normal range of both fasting blood sugar, before meal and post meal (2 hrs) reading for the past 3 months yet my recent HbA1c is 7.9 which is high and was diagnosed as T2D

      A false diagnosis imo..
I'm on a zero carbohydrate, zero sugar diet yet my HbAlc reading is prediabetic 6.3
I've been testing my blood glucose levels 4 times daily (fasting and post prandial) for the last 3 weeks. The average reading is 4.8-5.2
Very regular glucose readings at home for at least 2 weeks is the gold standard reading. If you eat a nutrient dense diet then hemoglobin is said to live longer than the hemoglobin of someone eating a high carb diet. This explains the false high reading.

@@karunasri1661 Hello my advice for you is avoid added sugars and eating after 6pm. Add more fiber foods to your child's diet along with plenty of physical exercise. Much luck.

Unfortunately ,i was surprised that you did not mention the largest cohort of disorders, ethnicities of populations who are carriers of traits in hemoglobinopathies, which are asymptomatic, and therefore may not know they are carriers. see "NIDDK Ethnicities and A1c"easily understood fact sheet including Table of ethnicities susceptible. Due to immigration patterns to the USA, it is essential that these ancient inherited, mild forms of anemia are Picked up. Using a fasting glucose with the A1c tells pathology that some form of anemia is present, if these are discordant. Hope these Disorders, the most common hematology problems in the World, become known by Diabetics, who may Not Speak or read English by informing family members who do.

Hey Everyone I was told I have H. pylori in my stool and E. Coli in my urinary tract and they want me to take Levofloxacin but that antibiotic causes liver failure. I never picked it up! I’ve also been having foamy / Bubbly urine for a year now but no protein was found in my urine culture. I also did a Kidney ultrasound and it was normal. Now They Want Me To Get Doxycycline Monohydrate 100mg tablet, 14 tablets. What do you suggest I take that is natural? Antibiotics Are Not My Preference. God bless you! Let Me Know Y’all
