Nice video Andy, i'm going to change styled steel wheels to torque thrust II wheels near future to my 1966 HT Mustang. Front comes 16x7 and back 16x8. I maybe put 215 tire front and 235 or 245 rear. Front backspacing is 4" which is enough not to cause any rubbing. Rear BS is 4.89" that should be fine too. My car has Shelby drop, and lowering springs in front and rear.
Did the same size wheels on mine. Have the alignment checked now. The wider front tires need it since the width changed . I scrubbed out the inside of my new BFG’s not being aware of this .
So I went with the exact wheels and set up on my 66 fastback. The car is lowered approximately 1" all around. The 225/50 rubbed my front fenders. I went 215/55 up front and they worked perfectly...I still intend to roll the fenders just for alittle additional clearance.
American Racing makes several versions of the wheel I have, and various backspacing amounts too. Also, not all 225/50 tires are the same size (externally). Lastly, the total amount lowered can also play a role. I too rolled my fenders, but it was several weeks later and I never had any rubbing issues, I just did it as I have different plans down the road.
Like the wheels but the stance is a little off as you said but will look good. Put the flat caps on the rear and leave the front open. That is the way Shelby ran them.
I have the same wheels on my Mustang except they are 15". The caps are not flat but project outward a lot less than the "domed" American Racing caps. They allow for clearance, but look better than both the flat and the "domed" American Racing caps in my opinion.
Excellent finely a U tuber that is willing to share this info. I'm not a young guy so maybe not relevant. What is the point of leaving a polite message and you get no reply. You made a great video good job you are top shelf in my book. Cheers.

Nice video as always from you! I own '68 fastback Bullitt, and I want to put same rims but 15x7. Do I need 15x8 for the back wheels, and is any important difference when I will choose the tires? I plan to buy Cobra Radial tires, and what sizes do you prefer? (now I own wheels with same design but 17")
Thanks! I am not familiar with the backspacing needed for the '68, but there is a spreadsheet online (I don't recall where) that lists the wheel size, backspacing, and tire size that fits all the Mustang years. I do know that you can go larger with your tire size than I can, so the most meat you can put out back, the better. :)
Beautiful!!! How about the simulated 3 spoke knock off caps? Ooops - looked for them so I could post a link but found they are $140 each... Not sure about you but that's a little pricey for me. Sorry to wet the whistle and then disappoint. Looking forward to the lowering. Going to look dynamite!!! ;) Carry on. Gary.
I don't recall the ride height, but I cut 1/2" coil off the new front springs then it has settled a little bit since then. For the rear I went with 4.5 leaf Mid-Eye springs, which is about 1" lower than stock, then I put a 1/2" block between the leafs and axle to get a 1-1/2" total drop. Those leafs has settled a little bit too, but that's what I was expecting.
I have the same wheels I just got that are 17 by 7.If I were to put 215/45/17 you think they’d fit without rolling the fender if it had a 2” drop on the car all the way around?
It depends on the backspacing of your wheels, but those 215 wide tires are skinnier than what I have, so that helps. A 4 inch backspacing might be ok, but less than that and you might have an issue with the front fender lips. :)
Abdy, Great video and beautiful tires. I am in the process of getting new wheels and tires as well. Could you please let me know why did you haave to get a 4 inch back spacing? Could you also share the tire brand name?
This particular wheel model is limited on available backspacing options. I would have liked to get 3.75" BS, but it wasn't available in this size and bolt pattern. I chose the 16" wheel because of the tires size I wanted (I couldn't get what I wanted in a 15" tire). Tires are Falken Azenis 225/50/16.
How was the handling of the car affected by the wheel change? I have a 66 convertible with stock tires and wheels. It handles like its on ice skates. I am wondering what changes I could make to get the biggest bang for the buck with respect to handling.
Wider tires and stickier tires will do wonders for the car. The wider and stiff sidewall tires don't give like tall and skinny tires do. The stickier tires will do more for braking than the standard upgraded disc brakes we put on our cars. In terms of improved handling, go with sticky tires, stiffer springs, and larger sway bars. But it can get expensive quickly. :)
American Racing Torq Thrust II wheels, 4 inch backspacing (part number VN2156765). Falken Azenis RT615K+ tires, sized 225/50/16 Order wheels from Ebay, tires from TireRack.
Did your TTDs come with fairly large bolt holes? Mine had a bunch of slop, so I measured, and mine average around .625-.650” hole, while the axle bolts are obviously 1/2-20. I see a bunch of guys just throwing regular acorn nuts on and it seems like we, or I, need to use the shank style
Andy... I've read somewhere on VMF that the 16x7 TTD have clearance issues with the factory upper control arms. Did you install these wheels when you were still running factory UCAs? Also, I've searched the part number you listed and some sites list these as torque thrust II wheels instead of Torque Thrust D wheels. Is that correct?
The 16x7 wheels can interfere with the UCA is the backspacing is too high. I have 4" backspacing with zero issues. When I put them on the car, I had the stock UCAs. I now have Mike Maier UCAs, but I still don't have any issues. Correct, I have the Torq Thrust II wheels, not the D's. If I was able to do it all over again, I'd likely go with the original style TT wheels, I prefer the straight spoke vs the subtle curve that is in the 'II' and 'D' wheels. They put that curve in there to provide clearance for the calipers of some disc brakes. It's less of an issue with 15" and 16" wheels, but some disc brakes are large enough that they require 17" or larger wheels, and some of those calipers need some clearancing. The wheels I had on my previous Mustang (white and blue coupe) were 15" and they fit and looked fantastic. That part number was VN3095765, I'm tempted to go back to them.
Yeah, I think that's another reason why they're so popular, they work with a lot of stock wheels. Even the design of the caliper is cut out and minimized on the outside edge to it clears most 14" wheels. :)
Hey Andy ! Once again great video man! I agree on the flat caps, looks more aggressive. Also if you lower the car look into QA1 they worked great on my setup.. I Recommend this set up. Where did you buy them if undont mind me asking. Hope to see more soon Andy ! 😎👊🏻
I purchased these wheels off Ebay, it was the best deal at the time. I agree, I would have like a slightly different offset, but in the 16x7 size and this particular style, the options were extremely limited.
Hi Andy, nicely done. I am getting ready to buy new wheels for my '66 soon; I do like the way you went with a matched set vs staggered, nice to be able to rotate them. Were there any steering issues with the 225's in the front, still have full turning radius? Give a lot of thought before you lower it; I am keeping mine at stock height for several reasons. My last build ('64 El Camino) sat low and speed bumps / humps were a problem. I have a Ford 4R70W 4sp-auto I installed in my Mustang and the pan is approx 1.5" lower than the C4, so I want to protect that as well. Appreciate your feedback. Tony
Thanks! No turning or rubbing issues. I have since lowered the car and done quite a bit of other suspension related mods. Looking back I think I’d rather have the 15” wheels because I think meatier tires look better on classic cars, but I’m also not able to get the sticky Azenis tires in the preferred size, so I had to do 16” wheels.
can't wait to see the car lowered with these 16 inch torque thrust wheels . are you gonna lower this mustang more than the coupe? are the parts allready ordered? :-)
Did you have any problems clearing the front upper control arms? I've heard people say a 16" wheel can be too tight on these particular cars. Looks killer by the way.
Thanks! No clearance problems. You are likely referring to Backspacing issues. I found that there was fewer Backspacing options in the 16" wheels I was looking at compared to the options on the 15" wheels.
The 225s are fine, I wish I had wider tires, but it comes at the cost of a wheel size I want in a wheel style I don't want. Meaning, I cannot get the width and offset I desire in this wheel style, so I have to settle for the size I have and 225s. :)
@@AndyKruseChannel that's where I'm at now. I got some cheap handloom 205s just to help the car roll and now's it's been almost 2 years and i just hate how skinny they are but on the original 14s there's not a ton of options.. seen some videos of guys getting up into 245s and ever bigger and it looks like what i want but then finding the rims is a nightmare. Thought about rolling out the fenders to buy some more space? Or are you more worried about rim sizing and spacing?
I rolled my fenders to make what I have work, but I would have happily done it anyways if it meant a wider tire. I'm not trying to build a full restoration car or show winner, I want performance, even if it means "cutting up" the car. But I say that with tongue in cheek, I also have a budget, so that plays a big role too. :)
I think tubs are more than what I want to do right now with this car. It's a major modification that I'm not sure if I want to go that far. I prefer a square setup for looks and handling. I like corners and more meat in the front helps that lateral grip. Although, now that I have enough motor, I can steer with the throttle in the corners, which ups the pucker factor. :)
What’s up sir! Just found your channel! Diggin it all! I have a 66 Coupe as well. Wanting to do pretty close to the same style you got going on with this fastback. So I appreciate all your time and info you’ve put out! Question… why not a 17”? I’ve debated on keeping a 15 on my car but with those tires getting harder to find and starting to be more expensive. I’m starting to lean to a 17. What are your thoughts?
Thanks! Overall, I think a 15" wheel, or more so a meaty tire, looks better on classic cars. However, there are a handful of classic cars I've seen that look fantastic with 17 inch or larger wheels. But those cars usually are done in a way that the build works well with those wheels and in a way the those larger wheels also compliment the build. I don't have the funds to take this car into the crazy world of custom fabrication and exotic parts, so I compromised and went with these 16 inch wheels. That being said, I have since began to wish I had gone with 15s. I am leaning towards these cars look good on 15s or go larger like 17s or more. The 16 inch wheel sort of fits in this weird area where it almost doesn't fit the car. While I could sell these and buy a different size, I just don't have the cheddar to absorb that loss right now, I need all the money I can get to put towards new parts or fixing or areas of the car. :)
@@AndyKruseChannel trust me I know all about a budget build… Mine hasn’t ran in over a decade! I’m piecing it together on used parts! Lol.. Being blue collar and having a 3yr old and a 5 month old… She’s not getting done anytime soon! I’m right there with you with meaty tires. I love me some meats. Those 16’s do well. I may even go that route also.
Torq Thrust II, part number VN2156765 I wanted the original style (with the straight spokes, not the curved spokes), but they don't make them in the size I was going for. I'm half tempted to sell these and get the 15" wheel because I can get the spoke style I want as well as the backspacing that looks really good on these cars.
@@dannydinwin I really like the style of the Torq Thrust wheels, specifically the Original style in a 15x7 with 3.75" backspacing (-6mm Offset). The part number for the specific wheels is VN3095765, and they have the straight spokes I was talking about earlier. It's the same wheel I had on my previous Mustang (I have videos about it on my channel). I was not able to get that same backspacing with the 16" wheels I have now, but I may try so spacers to get the same effect. Also, I'd put 225/60/15 tires on those wheels.
@@AndyKruseChannel so no tubs and 315s in your future yet?
Did you not stagger the tires for a reason?
Are these torq thrust II or the torq thrust D?
Torq Thrust II, part number VN2156765
I wanted the original style (with the straight spokes, not the curved spokes), but they don't make them in the size I was going for. I'm half tempted to sell these and get the 15" wheel because I can get the spoke style I want as well as the backspacing that looks really good on these cars.
@@AndyKruseChannel which wheels would you go for in 15"?
@@dannydinwin I really like the style of the Torq Thrust wheels, specifically the Original style in a 15x7 with 3.75" backspacing (-6mm Offset). The part number for the specific wheels is VN3095765, and they have the straight spokes I was talking about earlier. It's the same wheel I had on my previous Mustang (I have videos about it on my channel). I was not able to get that same backspacing with the 16" wheels I have now, but I may try so spacers to get the same effect. Also, I'd put 225/60/15 tires on those wheels. I really liked the way they looked on my last car and I'm wondering if I made the right choice with this car. :)
