Finnish Navy Hamina-Class Fast-Attack Craft Fires Torpedo For The First Time

- The Finnish Navy conducted a torpedo firing in the Northern Baltic Sea with a TP45 torpedo borrowed from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration.
=====================
This was the first time that a torpedo has been launched from a Hamina-class fast-attack craft and the first time in decades that the Finnish Navy has operated a piece of torpedo weaponry.
The objective of the launch was to ascertain the capability of the TP45 torpedo system as a part of the upgrade of Hamina-class fast-attact crafts. According the Commander of the Finnish Navy, this test helps improve the Navy’s anti-submarine warfare capability significantly, ahead of the introduction of the new TP47 torpedo.
The Finnish Navy has placed an order with Saab for torpedo and associated combat system deliveries for the Hamina-class fast-attack craft and future Pohjanmaa-class corvettes. The Saab Lightweight Torpedo or TP47 will be introduced into service use in 2023 and replace the TP45.
The TP47 is a lightweight torpedo particularly well suited for operating in the specific and complex naval operating environment of the Baltic Sea.

That’s one very capable & tough little ship! Kudos to the Finns ;)
When you see that ship ---> stay away.
even its size is kinda small, that got capability take out aircraft carrier.
Glad to see so many experts in the comments section
Yea, i can say that i don't know a shit about those things and im gonna be one of those men in 9 months :D
Are you an expert on Finnish missile boats? Heve you been one of those? I have.
Borrowed like they gonna give the torpedo back
Topedoes are actually tested before using, torpedoes on US submarines for example are being fired/tested multiple times (they have runtime) before being certified to carry a warhead
We used to launch and recover mk44 and mk46 surface launch torpedoes all the time. After test firing they were designed to float to the top and release a phosphorescent dye to make them easier to spot. We did lose a few though
Well SAAB missiles and radar are not unusual in these Baltic seas... from what I have heard :)
Correct, they are provided for free and will be returned when Finland get their Torped 47. As Deepsea steve wrote about mk44/mk46 these are to fitted with a floating device so they can be recovered and reused.
i dont think the swedes want it back if its in the water :D
How much is it to borrow a torpedo for a month ?
At least 4 ducks
@@bobbob-uv1oi Oh, great. Do they accept chickens as a payment too?
@@maloflory I think the exchange rate last time I checked is 1 duck to 2.7812 chickens.

Good job Finland 👍
Finns are tricky ask Russia
Glad to see do land still around. UK had to send two sets of two typhoons the other day to intercept Russian bombers flying very close by.
Like I say it's nice to see finlanders haven't changed habits. 👍
P S. There is still a long standing home about finland and Soviet Russia ww2. Many of home about how the few stood up to many and defended their homeland.
Russia: we have tanks
Finland: we have ski's
Russia: oh sh;t, retreat!

Whoever can sort out secure long rane wireless underwater communications will make some good bucks.
The only thing that does "long range" underwater anything radio frequency wise are extreme low wave lengths from 0Hz to 300Hz, and your out of luck because the the Navy has been using them for communications since the 80's up to the 2000's. Other countries still maintain ELF transmission sites for communications with their submarine fleets. That transmission bandwidth is measured in BITs though so wireless transmission rates underwater are very impractical.
Whoever is sorting out my short-range WiFi communications is apparently paid too much. My next purchase may be a string & two cans.
There are already several cables used for communication in the atlantic that connects america and europe together.
@LazicStefan I believe the original comment was talking about discreet secure communications between say a weapon and it's launch platform or between a hunting submarine and a friendly surface ship. Colors of light that lend themselves to covert use like reds and infrared only cover very short distances, just over a hundred meters in most cases. Practical distance wavelengths would be in the blue and higher range, but that would necessitate your ship or weapon constantly flashing very bright lights underwater. Which in nighttime combat conditions means your a well lit very noticeable target.
As already stated, long range underwater communication already exists, but is very impractical for most applications, especially between guided munition and a firing platform. And that's just down to physics, as water is just really good at stopping any radiation.

as a fan of the 40mk4 i'm just happy to see it on something other than a standard OPV
Me too, it would be nice to see these equipped on the Royal Navy's OPV's, it would certainly add some serious teeth!
@@AB-gi3qy OPVs don't need a medium caliber naval gun at all...now if you want an OPV that can be quickly upgraded to a corvette standard a 40-57mm gun is a great choice but for pure OPV all you need as a .50 in an RWS
As you guys know, the Royal Navy Type 31 frigates with get a combo of 57mm and 40Mk4 guns by bofors
@@NavalNews i did not know the type 31 had 40mk4s good to know, but not sure why you'd do a mixed battery with only a 17mm difference in size...? why not standardize on either 3 40s or 3 57s?
People from BAE Systems (Bofors) and Babock told us such configuration (57mm + 40mm) provides better coverage against close in air targets, especially with the programmable ammunition that come with these guns (there is an airburst mode)
Has this class also been fitted with the South African Denel "Umkhonto " anti air missile system ?

The other thing w/torpedo is not clear who fired it in busy water way, or if it was a mine right off.

@Pepe Von Kek Yeah, typ 45 as trainers, till ordered new typ 47 comes. In any case, those are lightweight ASW torpedoes. Russian Baltic Fleet has 1 submarine (after 24h of war against west they sure will have more). Our archipelago is very nice area to launch missile attacks against enemy. We know the radar blocking height of every rock, and depth between all of them. There is hundreds thousands islands/islets/rocks.
@@kimmoj2570 I'm not worried about tech and professionalism. I'm really really worried about political prostitutes who are more destructive than russian subs. Let's take Estonia. How you get rid of this 150k + hostile russian speakers and according to the calculations there will be 150k more when winter and poverty kicks-in in Ukraine.

@@kimmoj2570 buddy. Estonian integration rate was 600- 1000 people annually. That's how many people managed to learn language and settle down in Estonian society.
150k -300k foreigners will never integrate to the micro state. Estonia already have 300k russian speakers. Now add 150k to 300k.
With such politicians - Estonia don't need enemies.
Ukrainians will speak Russian and will not learn very complicated Estonian language.
Only pathological lier in politics will claim the 150k+ suddenly learn estonian when capital is already turned into Russian speaking corruption hotspot.

Fast attack vessel launching torpedoes while stopped. Brilliant.
They're obviously gonna test the torpedos first to see that everything works.
Kinda like checking that your car can run properly after an engine modification before you go racing with it.
VarvasNukka its a modular plug and play system. You could bolt it to a garbage scow and it would launch.
@@MrGhendri Still you need to learn to use it first.
@@MrGhendri no torpedo weaponry operation in 15 yrs. Yea yea lets just launch it without training yay
torpedo definitely gives little ship big punch but better way to deliver a torpedo than ship today, if u hve air assets. problem w/torpedoes is the ranch, & if in ranch u can usually blow them out of water easier w/cannon & missiles in NOW, unless u r little & they r big. Most of the threat u will dispatch won't b big enough to aim torpedo at other problem but still cool option, if stalking at night in stealth as 1st strike b4 u pour it on, or fire & run away.

Fins don't need to compensate since the meat torpedoes are huge.
The sea where they operate is also quite small after all.

Finish have small torpedoes lol
Germans have G7e. You may add T5, T11 and El condor pasa
Those are ASW torpedoes, it doesn' require a large explosive to break a pressured vessel, and in the conditions of the Baltic Sea, a long range is not necessary.
