    I would totally mod these. Remove their missiles, and substitute with the ability to launch a swarm of Lancet type drones. Launching 24-36 loitering drones out of one of these would be very devastating. Even though the payload would be small, they would be almost impossible to shoot down. The drones can also be used for shore attack as well.

    Modern naval warfare is basically a shootout between glass cannons. Any ship can effectively mission kill any other ship. With how destructive modern weapons are, once a hit is sustained, you can expect the surface combatant to be out of commission for the rest of the campaign.

    These can also be useful as boat drone commands ships. Just add one or two more crew members in there for controlling the attack drones. can be like those old side scrolling shooter video games that have like your small spaceship surrounded by drones as you get power ups that you can send forwards first towards to attack the enemy. 😂

      most 022s have been mothballed, and only a small number are used as high-speed patrol ships. Even the original 056 corvette has been decommissioned and handed over to the Coast Guard.

    The boat really is a remnant of old PLAN doctrine and more or less supersuced by aircraft umder the current doctrine. The one trick pony nature of the boats does make them useful near shore ambush attacks either hear TW strait or in northern part of SCS. However, it does need new datalinks and new missiles. The current ~120km YJ82 is making penetration impossible against any sort of modern navy with intact ISR, the new export CM-802B have range of 290km+ and YJ12 should technically fit with in the current space as well. However, is worth it to upgrade 80 platform when the same thing can be better delivered bu J-16s or even H-6s is another call. Perhaps the widely floated idea of converting them to drone platforms for shore bombadment is not a bad idea.

    Today, ships relying purely on stealth for defense is an obsolete concept against Tier 1 powers - a modern AESA equipped AWACs like the KJ-600 or E-2D have the sensitivity and post processing power to pick out a -15dbsm target at over 200km, and its questionable if a >200 ton aluminum boat designed by 2004 China even reaches -10dbsm!
    I think the time of FAC spam is over. They were heavily emphasized by Scandinavian countries in an era where radars (especially Soviet systems) had problems picking out small targets from coastal clutter. An early-mid Cold War Soviet radar operator could not be sure whether he was seeing a small rock sticking out of the waves or an enemy attack craft. But in an age of ever more powerful computers and exquisitely sensitive radars designed to sniff out 20-25 ton composite/RAM aircraft, a 200 ton metal warship is going to have trouble.

    One of the ways such missile boats can be effectively used is to impose a blockade in a forced reunification scenario. Taiwan is only 90 miles off the Mainland's coast, & the overwhelming majority of its ports (& thus cargo handling capacity) is located on the western side of the island, facing the Mainland. These missile boats, along with SSKs (such as the mini-sub recently discussed by HI Sutton) & UUVs can do the majority of the leg work for imposing a blockade, with the support of land-based coastal command & control. This would enable the growing fleet of capital assets (e.g. PLAN CVBGs) to concentrate on fending off foreign intervention. These fast attack boats can also be used to hunt down the remnants of the RoCN once hostilities commence.

    • @drscopeify
      @drscopeify Рік тому

      That's not how it works, these are shallow water craft. You are confusing different types of ships and they mission. These are not going to be of much use in a modern invasion but you can use them as patrol boats to keep your ports safe while a war is going on.

    • @GMATveteran
      @GMATveteran Рік тому +1

      @@drscopeify Most of the Taiwan straits & East China Sea is shallow water. Also, keep in mind that the Type 022 doesn't need to venture far out given the range of its anti ship missiles. It would be patrolling off the coast of Fujian to cover the approaches to Taiwan's west coast ports. The few ports on the east side can be covered by other assets.

      Consider the history backgound in 1990s, when PLAN was weak and couldn't built enough warships, they designed Type 22. It was some kind of desperate measure to encounter USN fleet if Taiwan Strait goes hot. Type22's mission is to trying to get close to enemey's fleet and overwhelm their defense system by a swarm of fast cheap boats with anti ship missiles, which can be described as a suicide attack.

    • @ex0duzz
      @ex0duzz Рік тому +4

      Who said it's so vulnerable? They will be protected by jets, and other ships and subs also, and they will be operating inside first island only under Chinese coastal missile batteries. But if China needs fast boat to chase and strike, they have it.
      They would be great for patrol SCS and making sure USAs other vassals stay out. Like pH, Vietnam, sk, Japan.
      You can basically sink a carrier/destroyer with these if you send enough missiles their way. It's all about numbers. China has like 80 of these. They compliment China's other naval ships quite well. Better to have diversity and a lot of ships than just 1 destroyer type and much less numbers. Chunas coastal missiles batteries will sink them too easy.

      They are a great supplement to bigger ships, especially in any local fight inside first island chain or Taiwan. Otherwise all the enemies missiles will be aimed at the bigger boats. Having just one type of ship and all costing a billion or more each like arleigh burke is too easy to hard counter. USA had no option though since they aren't fighting off their coast so they need big everything but china doesn't. It's similar concept to Chinas subs. You are mispronouncing a few words. If you had just mispronounced one word(catamaran), then I would have just ignored it. But when you also mispronounce the word "horizon", and in the exact same mistake. I didn't want to be a grammar Nazi, but yeah.. I couldn't handle it after I heard "horizon" lol.
    There should be no emphasis made on the last syllables in either word. "maran" should be said smoothly together with the rest of the word with no emphasis at all. The way you say it sounds like 2 different/separate words stuck together.. like "cata" and "maran". It should be like caterpillar, cataracts, or crocodile. all smooth, no emphasis on anything is the main point. The "maran" should be said like "marriage". It's similar to Iran. Some say Eye-ran(or I ran, like someone ran somewhere), while others say it like E-rarn or Eye-rarn. the "an' in catamaran should be like the "an" in "I ran somewhere". Now onto horizon..
    "Horizon" should be said smoothly with no emphasis on any syllable, not the hard and emphasized "zON" that you use. Maybe easier to pronounce it if it's written as horizun or horizen but with *hori" still pronounced the same way you did. Don't change it to be like some japanese "hori" since hori-zen sounds like its some Japanese word. Lol
    Hope that helped.

    An inexpensive, fast, low radar RCS missile truck. China already has 80, and no doubt can churn out many more as needed. The missing satellite uplink is VERY easily rectified, and the missile suite may be also augmented. Remember these boats are really designed for use as coastal defence, in pretty shoal waters. For this application, they will do just fine, and their primary low-visibility / anti-ship missile carrier role, with high speed (and high manoeuvrability) will pose a significant problem to any engaging surface force.

We need a submarine equivalent too, if we are serious about a stupid and unnecessary conflict we are going to have to grow our thinking away from Cold War nuclear saber rattling and begin considering what a modern conventional war would look like. I don’t think anybody wants to use nukes unless backed into a corner. That’s a line there’s really no walking away from and there are no victors. We are in a fight for global economic supremacy and I think China is the only country seriously considering what steps are realistic to win control of the pacific and take control of their own destiny.

Whatever it is China can always make way more for cheaper and they have the advantage of just defending their coastal areas. Anything small won't have much range so with small and cheap China has the total advantage. For every drone Western forces can make China can make 10 or more in a fraction of the time. They're the world's factory and already have lots of facilities dedicated to making drones of all types. Since the catamaran design is stable in high seas, I would think it's possible to have these operate alongside major surface combatants on extended long range patrols. Provided there is a support ship also for resupply.

    A very capable design for coastal defense or against a force without airborne radar.
    A key component for the Type-22 is its datalink. The missile boat has very limited over-the-horizon sensors capability. The atmospheric condition has to be favorable and the accuracy is poor. As you said, the effectiveness of the long- ranged missiles is dependent on other sensor platforms. I am really curious as to why it doesn't have a more capable datalink.
    I really question its capability against a US carrier group. I really do not think a carrier group would come within 300 miles of China's coast or fail to have airborne radar up at all times. However, it would be very effective against an invasion force or against a non-peer power.

      The Type 022 was designed almost 25 years ago and as one of the responses to the 1996 Taiwan Strait crisis.
      The 022 needs to accomplish only one thing, to utilize its stealth capability and speed advantage to move forward to the attack position and launch the missile. It is not involved in post-launch missile navigation, so a capable datalink is not necessary. And capable datalink is not cheap, 022 hull is already expensive, high maintenance costs(PLAN standard), plus 8 missiles price is even more expensive.
      022 no longer meets Naval tactics and will not continue to be built. It's a beautiful ship anyway
