      We did, there were two special boats that BSU-1 used to support Seal operations in Nam. the LSSC and the MSSC. LSSC, two 427 fords with water jets. MSSC, two 427 Mercruiser in board out boards. Good for about 35-40 knots carrying a Seal platoon. Two M2 .50 cal, two to four M60 .30 cals, and aft an M134 mini gun. Yes, they were bad ass boats!

    In 1980, I was @ a small shipyard in Pt. Everglades for work on a keel cooler on a large tug, and in the slip next to us was a 50ft naval craft partially covered w/ a tarp. It was dry docked so I was able to see the telescoping wing under the bow and the stern “wing”, which hydraulically swung up out of the water. Intrigued, I started taking pictures and was immediately halted by a senior chief there. Being the engineer on my vessel, I explained I was only interested from an engineering standpoint. He said it was a new high speed experimental vessel from Norfolk which had a breakdown on sea trials but was classified so NO Pictures. I’ve still got them though and it is a beast. Turbine jet boat riding on wings was what I observed and have never seen another. It was likely a drug interdiction or special ops vessel. Wow

    Navy: nah
    Marines: i'll take 30
    GD: it only cost $15 mil vs your 300 billion ships
    Navy: i'll take twice as many as the marines
    GD: and it has the cruise range of 150 miles and drink fuel like water
    Marine: heck yeah! I'll take your whole stock!
    Navy: so its a coast guard rinky dink (sadge noises)

    Watching them change the barrels on the M2s I can't help but think they're gonna lose a lot of barrels of time. Maybe they should turn the gun so it is parallel (or nearly parallel) with the boat's side so the barrel is able to be easily handled with two hands - I assume they have barrel change mitts available. Turning the gun parallel with teh side of the boat would also mean that if the barrel fell there might be a better chance it landed on the deck instead of straight into the drink.

    It would sure be nice to have a few of these Mark VI's on constant patrol on the U.S. boarder Rio Grande river. Would be an effective deterrent.

    • @Zomby_Woof
      @Zomby_Woof Рік тому

      Deterrent to what?
      If you're just itching to shoot people, a jon boat and a 30-06 would be way more effective.
      You do realize that few people swim the Rio Grande to get into the US?
      Hell, most illegal entry into the US is via commercial flights, not the poor bastard coming up through the southern boarder looking for work,

    These boats are great, but quite expensive. Might make good hand-me-downs to the Coast Guard one day. I think the CG looked at them as replacements for the 82’ cutters, but they’re just too pricey.

    Training to use a manual gun on a boat is a skill no doubt, but I was as surprised to not see more "innovation" like a gyro-stabilized machine gun adapter at 5:20 where every round counts. Or even connected aim to the gunner's headset, with target acquisition and selection.

    are these boats faster than the high speed patrol boats used in Nam? they could do 50 knots. they were always in dry dock in Japan cause the skippers would run them fast in the rough seas and would tear off the foil skids.
