The Cheggers Plays Pop production team showing their colleagues over on Top of the Pops how it *should* be done in yerms of set, lighting and camerawork?
Don’t we just love how the networks used to make the bands mime bc they didn’t trust that a band could reproduce the song live, even though most were touring bands & did it every other night! 🙄
Playing live required time-consuming sound checks and also concerns over volume and quality. Think of a band showing up compromised due to on-the-road vices or colds or disinterest. Or pulling an Elvis Costello a la SNL or Hendrix (when he was supposed to do a duet with Lulu and went into a Cream cover instead). Miming addresses all of those things.
@@ashbowen6551 Bands have been a lot more professional than that since the late 80s. I think you’ve been watching the Wahlberg film Rockstar, a film based on the real life events of Judas Priest. The only ones that may be ‘disinterested’ or feeling the effects of ‘on the road vices’ are the bands too big & around too long to care about doing tv shows for promotion or even have the need. I’ve toured with enough bands over 35+ years (including doing tv shows- recorded in the mornings btw) that I know what I’m talking about. Also sound checks aren’t necessary for one song. A line check is sufficient bc like I said it’s morning. The audience is in by 9-10am & after playing a gig the night before, no one is gonna wake them up to play a song that the roadcrew can often play if needed. Illness happens but not as often as you think bc like I said, professionalism, meaning they take care of themselves as much as possible. Again the bands that need the exposure won’t sabotage themselves & the ones that would are too big to go on any talk show or if they do, they treat it as an important show, which it is. The major studios that forced younger bands to mime were the British & Australian ABC & ITV networks run by staid old men from the 60s that had observed the hellraising of the 70s & early/mid 80s bands such as that portrayed in Rockstar. They made things difficult in the mime issue but eventually record companies stopped throwing wads of money at these bands, cleaning up their messes & demanded professionalism so the bands realised they no longer had literal ‘get outa jail free’ cards. Eventually the ABCs of the western world got it into their heads that bands as a whole at that level wouldn’t screw up on camera bc even bands that trashed hotel rooms or had singers that didn’t turn up to concerts for 3 hours (GnR anyone?) they didn’t do it on talk/tv shows, not that those bands went on tv bc again, no need for the exposure. A trashed hotel room got more publicity than playing on Letterman or similar. The most famous incident that contradicts this is Rage Against The Machine who again, were too big to care, plus the song they were asked to do, ‘Killing in the Name Of...’ ends how it does, so the studio saying ‘sure we want you to play that, but not as you wrote it’ is hilarious & an epic fail in the making! 😆 It’s so ironic bc the ‘F you I won’t do what you tell me’ is a middle finger to the establishment which is exactly who was telling them to change their song! They HAD to play it as written bc the entire song was about not knuckling under, & here they were being told to🙄 Other than that, no, there’s rarely, if ever, issues. Hope that cleared it up for you.
Dave Edmunds is an absolute legend.
What an incredible group. A phenomenal vocal by Dave Edmunds!
One of the greatest bands ever.
Awesome band and genius production! 💪
Rockabilly music is the best!
Oh, how i miss Rockpile
Cheggers gave a name check to Nick Lowe on base. Wouldn't have been very happy if I was Billy Bremner or Terry Williams. Two top musicians.
Nick Lowe had an album and single out at the same time so maybe it was because of that.
Dave and Nick were the headliners. At all times. Grow a clue.

FAB :)
Loved this. Why does it lead me into thinking about Talking Heads and Devo?
for no good reason.

Didn't TOTP bands perform live instead of drivel like this?

I'm surprised that they didn't dub the audience sounds too 😆

His guitar is bigger than he is.
I remember this program. Why I can say Dave Edmonds must of been desperate 😵. Fucking great song though
Nick Lowe is assume
Sorry, never heard of him or the song.
I've never heard of you: why advertise your ignorance?
The rock you have been living under must have been HUGE!
Your wife told me that she loves Dave Edmonds. Well, her mouth was full at the time, so I THINK that's what she said.
